    I only got into perfumes in my 30s. I was convinced perfume just wasn’t for me for a long time. All of the perfumes I was seeing (Dior, Chanel, Chloe, etc), smelled incredibly similar to me. I still don’t know what it is, but many have a smell that I describe as “generic perfume smell”. I have since discovered some designer perfumes that have a distinct smell, but i really want to know what it is that makes them all smell so similar!

    • @mashteeh8691
      @mashteeh8691 9 месяцев назад +10

      I have the same issue. I've never been much into perfumes, as I couldn't find one that would stand out or suit me that well. I only ever had one perfume that was 100% "Me". After a few years it stopped working with my chemistry and since then, I've never purchased a perfume for myself again. Until recently. Most fragrances still smell so similar to my nose and lack something special or interesting, or are overwhelmingly sweet to me. Men's fragrances on the other hand, have always caught my interest and smell much more exciting to me- maybe I should experiment with those?🤔

      @@mashteeh8691Experiment. You like what you like.
      One reason that male scents are labeled male is because of marketing purposes. Male actors and models are paid to advertiser men’s fragrances.
      Lots of companies offer small decants. Start buying and testing those. You can start with decants of male scents you like. If that’s too big of a leap, start with unisex scents.

      Generic perfume is an expression I have used. I think smelling something like Dior Homme Intense made me realize they didn’t all smell like that basic perfume smell and this the rabbit hole began and then I discovered more off the beaten track scents, followed by niche. That’s said I don’t like it to get too avant grade. I want it to be wearable and I don’t want to be assaulting everyone around me.

    • @Demi1369
      @Demi1369 8 месяцев назад +5

      They probably smell “generic” because most likely you’re smelling the designer ones (not the private lines), they are produced by the same perfume houses with the same perfumers, probably the same trademarked ingredient is in there and they are not indie niche perfumers making them. That’s my guess. And if you say well even the niche smell the same, then it’s probably because the niche may have come out first and the designers copied. There are only so many fragrance companies (think Firmenich, etc.) so that’s probably why. And the same master perfumers get hired to make designer perfumes. So most likely you need to find small perfume houses owned by the perfumer. Otherwise, I don’t know but it’s worth figuring out what it could be. 🤔

    I just found your videos but I can provide some context on Glossier You. It went through a reformulation in 2021. The main component that gave the scent throw and longevity was hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde (also know as Lyral and a bunch of other names). It’s a known skin sensitizer and allergen. It's very common cause of allergic reactions and a standard part of patch testing for them.
    As of 2022 it has been banned in the UK. From my research it is also very restricted in EU allowed in limited uses and requires an allergen warning on the package if it is present in the formula over a certain amount (I think it's 0.5% of the total formula). Glossier reformulated to continue to sell "You" in the European and UK markets. Also we don’t know if but more likely when Canada and the US will follow the trend and start restricting use of the material.
    The reformulated version does have more of the pink pepper and pencil shavings vibes along with not smelling as strong or lasting. However I've found the longer it's aged the better it gets and longer it lasts. It's one of my favorite perfumes and something safe I can always throw on.
    edit: grammar

    I think people just love to shit on designer perfumes. It's part of the snobbery aspect in the hobby. Any time a perfume becomes a mega mainstream hit, it is polarized online. I also think a lot of houses end up creating a knock on effect where all other houses try to replicate the fragrance profile in their own way. Recently that has been love don't be shy and baccarat rouge 540.

The gunpowder note in it just gives it a cool edge that I can't get enough of. I agree about the Good Girl bottle. It just reads cheap to me. But I do have the travel spray. I remember when I first smelled it thinking it was so unique for a designer perfume. I still enjoy it. And I'm wearing Donna Born in Roma today. Hi Olivia! Can you suggest an alternative to Glossier You? It's very peppery on me too, but I like that scent profile 🙂 Thanks and have a wonderful day! xx

    Yes, I like Donna Born in Roma Intense way more than original and I didn't expect it.

    I have recently gotten into fragrance and have gone a little crazy which can be VERY costly. I am 71 and have used fragrance on and off in my life time, at one time Clinque aromatics elixir was my signature scent. People knew it was me they were smelling and it lasted all day. Now I just do not like it as well. I have bought Baccarat 540 and Tom Ford Cherry Smoke and 2 of Victoria Beckhams. also one by Hermes. My question is have you tried any of the Boy Smells, particularly Hinoki Fantome? I really like it but it is a statement! I am still searching for that one scent I LOVE as much as I loved aromatics exlir back in the day:)

    Great video, thank you! I do like Prada Paradoxe but agree it's a little bit boring. What would be a more interesting fragrance along the lines of Paradoxe?

    Hi Olivia! Is there any chance you would consider doing a Montagne review? It’s a dupe house and according to many people a really good one with quality fragrances. I’m interested in their Another 13 dupe and glossier one (I own it but Montagne version is supposedly inspired by pre-reformulated “You”). Would be really happy if you did a review because I trust your opinion!

    Covid stole By The Fireplace from me! My sense of smell is damaged since 2020 and I can no longer smell this one. Devastated.

    I do love Born in Roma Coral. Nice summer scent. Can't tolerate Good Girl ugh. I think it's my menopause. I can't do the heavy scents. My favs now are Cartier Panthere and Phlur Missing Person. My always go to is JC Oui.

    I grew up in a tropical country. So my nose can just appreciate fresh and light fragrances. I easily get headache with strong fragrances 😔. I tried libre in the mall because only heard good things about it. I regret spraying it on me. It gave me headache the whole day haha.

    Could you recommend sweet or gourmand fragrances for people who don’t like powdery scents? I know that sounds weird. But I never feel like powdery notes add much to a scent. It obscures the other notes to me 😅 But I’m a big sweet perfume and gourmand girly.

    I totally agree with you about Valentino Donna Born in Roma! Boooring!!! I was SO bummed when they discontinued the original Donna, which I love! It is so much more original especially with that leather note. But BIR??? Ehhhh.

    Awwww, I love your channel, but we disagree. I love Donna Born in Roma. 😊 Prada Paradoxe smells pretty, and has a very similar dry down. No need to own both. Libre is fantastic, both the EDP and the intense!

    I bought myself Daisy eau so fresh a while ago at an airport layouver and LOVED it, used it a lot till it was half gone. Then I put it away, and when I went back, it just smells b o r i n g a e f f f 😅 now I just use it for layering

    Agree with it all. Unfortunately my nose has matured so much that most of best sellers just don’t do it for me. They all literally smell the same or slight variations.
    Except…Ms. Dior! Lol I still like that one and need if in my collection always. I need it on days when I just want to be a pretty lady.
    On the other hand, I don’t like every niche that’s popular either.
    Is sample a lot before I buy.

    I also really hate Lavender with sweeter notes and can’t get behind Libre and Mon Guerlain. But for some reason I love Musc Ravageur by Frederic Malle. It also has Lavender along with Vanilla in it. Hands down my current fave.

    I bought a sample of Bright Crystal and the dry down was so nasty on me. Like stuffy floral, couch foam and puke. Super weird.
    I also love Light Blue. I think the pour femme version is very unisex and would be gorgeous for a man too. It lasts so long on me too.

    I can absolutely smell the florals in Kayali Vanilla but on my skin it goes VERY musky and woody and loses a lot of the sweetness I was hoping for. I'm new to fragrances as a whole but I think I need to add something to it for it to be a hit.
