    Hey, hey. Thanks for watching and all the comments! Seems like not everyone is onboard with these changes so far. Have any more questions on these laptops I can answer? Reply here and I'll get to them.
    While I'm here, I have a couple of small edits and things I didn't mention! First, you can't actually go up to 8TB of storage anymore, apparently that configuration is off the table. Secondly, I just wanted to emphasize that 120Hz variable refresh rate panels are available in the base configurations of these laptops, including the XPS 13, which is pretty awesome. Last thing on configurations - the XPS 16 starts at $1800, but that's without discrete graphics, which will range up to the RTX 4070. No RTX 4080 option in the lineup like the XPS 17 used to have.

      Appreciate the comment here. Just wondering, do you know if any of the laptops come with vapor chamber cooling like the xps 17 does? And also, do you know if the tdps of the gpu can be increased through nvidia dynamic boost or are they a hard limit? Since I remember that the 4050’s lowest tdp was 35w, I’m a bit concerned that the XPS 14 will underperform quite a bit.

      Hi, Please tell Dell to add haptic feedback for the capacitive fn row. If not, it is going to be completely unusable. Please give this feedback to Dell. In reddit and many places’ people report that they use these laptops for professional use(editing/coding) and dell solution will not fit their use case. A solution could be to use haptic feedback of some kind so that you know you have pressed a bottom.

      Did Dell give any reason for changing the SD card reader to mSD? The only thing I can think of that uses mSD are things like doorbell cameras, which are rarely, if ever inserted into a laptop. I honestly can't imagine the rational for that decision. Would have been just as good to remove it all together and put another thunderbolt port or something.

    Looks like Dell just nuked their XPS customer base...soldered RAM, the highly divisive touch Fn row and the invisible touchpad are not upgrades (although the higher refresh rate display options and higher resolution cameras are most welcome), but just going through the motions for the sake of a refresh. Introducing Ryzen CPUs/APUs to the existing chassis would have been a far bigger and more universally exciting update due to better efficiency, battery life and lower thermals. Shame.

      When it comes to CPU, I still have hopes for Meteor Lake. Latest review on Notebookcheck has the MSI Prestige 16 with 99Wh Battery and Core 7 Ultra with over 20 hours of real life runtime. I think we have to wait for some optimisations to see the potential of those new Intel chips. Would be great to finally have some competition again...

  • @aerohydra3849
    @aerohydra3849 10 месяцев назад +26

    As much as the new design looks good and variable refresh rate is great, there are just too many other caveats. The lack of a physical function row is really annoying and I was hoping Dell wouldn't do this to their other laptops after the 13 Plus (especially the escape key, which I use all the time). Removing the SD reader for micro is also annoying, and soldered RAM is a big step back for what used to be one of the more modular laptops on the market.
    Judging based on the TDPs of the GPUs it also seems like they didn't actually improve their cooling solution at all. 60W on the 4070 for the new XPS 16 is the exact same as it is on the XPS 17 (and it even lacks the 4080 option now), and the 30W 4050 in the XPS 14 actually makes it worse than the current 40W GPUs you can get in the XPS 15. When even HP and Microsoft are running their thin and lights with higher wattage graphics cards you know you need to change something.
    I feel like Dell removed a lot of what people liked about the XPS- modular, upgradable components and a no-nonsense design, and didn't fix their biggest issue which was thermal performance.

    @Manuel-rl6um 10 месяцев назад +7

    In theory, the non-ohysical function keys and seamless touchpad allow for more room for cooling. It did so in the XPS13 Plus, where the P processors performed better than in its ultrabook competitors.
    I was wondering when Dell would implememt the same treatment to the 16 version and here it is.
    Now we need real number to see if the cooling has really improved or if we just lost functionality without any plus side to it.

    No surprise that Dell ditched the 2-in-1 as Windows on tablets suck, and the market has never taken off. People buy Android and iPadOS tablets instead. But I am surprised they have gone all-in on the XPS 13 Plus design, as it is very divisive. Apple killed their version of the touchbar because of the negative feedback, and Dell's version is far less useful.
    This looks like a catch-up by Dell, with a better webcam and 120Hz, but the XPS no longer stands above the crowd. Like most PC OEMs, they have a tough year ahead.

That OLED is a GEM of a screen and the 12th Gen i7 P series is still plenty capable. I still get compliments on that screen and I really don't worry about nit counts. At least for the 14 and 16, I am amazed that Dell decided to implement all these changes in a single generation. They have made enough changes to frustrate all customers in their own ways. Plenty of folks will not like the keyboard design and trackpad, others will hate the touch bar, and for others the removal of the SD card slot is a deal breaker (I'm in this camp). If they had implemented just one of those changes, it would have only upset that subset, but by doing all three, they have tripled, or at least doubled the number of customers that will no longer consider these as a viable option. A serious mistake on Dell's part, and one I doubt they will be able to remedy...

Considering Dell's track record in quality control, I can only hope for the best. However, I have concerns that within two years, these non-physical keys might fail, and by that time, the warranty would likely have lapsed, effectively rendering the computer useless.

I run lightroom classic, lightroom cc, lightroom web, Adobe Express n browser with load of open tabs. Presently it can't handle adding in Photoshop. So new one needs to be able. For the last 5 years I d/l photos straight from camera via just usb cable. When not travelling it's connect to a dell U3223qe daisy chain to secondary monitor 24x7. Three portable SSD (total 7tb) connects to the monitor. Via a powered hub another 3 portable HDD (total 12tb) is connected to the laptop for a total of 8 drives c to j.
      Question.
      If a 32g/1tb or more 14" is available n if I were to add another u3223qe, can it and/or windows handle 4 displays in extended mode with a u3223qe daisy chain to a 2nd u3223qe n it itself daisy chain to a third dell monitor? At the monitors max resolution.
      15" will be undesirable as I often travel for photography shoots. So a 14" is the max I can tolerate.
      Note. Presently not doing video editing. At some point I may dive in video. However any videos will be rudimentary but will opt to go with Adobe eco-system. Presently using Adobe Rush very occasionally. It's possible I will adopt Premiere Pro into my bag but any video work will be basic.

    I wish the 14" had a 4060 option, full size SD card, and WiFi7 instead of WiFi6E. The 16" has the 4060 option and WiFi7 but it's just too big for all the times I'm actually using it on my lap roaming around the place. I understand that 4060 is probably too much heat for the 14" and I can live with the 4050, but man would it be good to have full size SD and Wifi7 and it wouldn't kill them to put that in.

    I was planning to purchase both the new XPS 14 and the new U4025QW monitor having a 5K resolution @120Hz refresh rate. I actually ordered the XPS 14 and then got in doubt if it could support the resolution of U4025QW and called Dell technical support. Although he was not very sure he didn't believe it would support the mentioned resolution and refresh rate. I ended cancelling my order. :-) Do you by chance have any comments or input in that regard? maybe more details on what generally is required (by a windows pc) to support 5K @120Hz? Thanks!.

  • @broncodolphin
    @broncodolphin 10 месяцев назад +2

    I definitely think this is a major downgrade on all fronts. Worse design that is much more susceptible to damge because of the glass decklid, much worse keyboard from most people's perspective, no AMD option which is a shame and the biggest problem is that it does not allow for upgrades. Previous XPS 15 and 17 devices had an extra M.2 Slot and replaceable memory. Micro SD is another downgrade from the Full size SD of previous models. I hope very few people buy this so that they take a hint.

      100% agree. I hate the capacitive function row and downgrade from reg sd to micro sd slot just doesn't make sense for laptops of this price/use case. I don't think dell knows or understands who their target audience is for these machines

    Ouch, that was NOT was I was hoping for.... 15" is the perfect size for me.... anything larger is too large portability, so I would have to go down to 14" and sacrifice some screen and battery size :( and no function keys is the deal breaker. I use them all the times, as a developer, windows super user, and gamer. RIP

    I have a new 13" XPS at work with no physical function keys - I have to say it is terrible. I have to use external keyboard when I use excel cause the touch sensitive keyboard need to "touch" twice many times. ugh. Good god, all the new models will have the same keyboard? And I was thinking about my personal old XPS. So I guess I will just keep it :)

    Those capacitive function keys are just unnecessary.

    If it's using the same cooling as the xps 15 then it's gonna be a nonstarter for most people. Comparing the performance of the MacBook pro with the existing xps line is a joke since Intel CPUs are power hungry and the xps 15 was severely power limited because the thin chassis and cooling couldn't handle full performance. They need major changes inside and proof that this isn't yet another gimped $2k+ laptop. The loss of the cheaper xps options is no big deal, as many inspiron models are almost just as good and sometimes better for much cheaper.

    what the hell is up with the brightness wars, it doesn't make any sense when the screens are bright and reflective, all you see is yourself. use matte screens with descent brightness (400nits) and you're good. Otherwise, you'll just murder your battery life with display at 1000 nits outdoor. Besides, the quality of display is not its brightness. Somehow, these reviewers are apple fans boys, they want everything to come with 'Apple specifications'. the new XPS is amazing. and no, developers won't be mad at the capacitive touch row. why assume its not going to work? because Apple couldn't figure out their design? at least let people experience it before you start throwing shade....
