Great video! I have a non G version. I think golden contacts prevent corrosion if I'm not mistaken. Mine had the issue actually so the meter didn't work. I opened the camera, soldered the wire and it works again. I documented the process, you can find it on my channel if you ever need to open MAT-124 :D

this is the straight forward comparison between the 124 and 124g I had been looking for. Also, I would vote for FM2 video.
Keep up the content! glad to see you putting out more stuff lately.

Just picked the Yashica-Matt 124 and wanted to know the difference between it and the G. I like the none G look so much better. It's classic. Thank you for putting this together.

I thought a long time on buying a 124g....then I just bought a mint 1963 rollei 3.5f off an italian collector, it even came with the original receipt, crazy!

I saved myself $250 a few months ago by not buying the G 🤣 it’s crazy to me that the G goes for $250 more than the 124 because it’s blacked out and has gold contacts. Got my 124 for under $200 which is a steal in my eyes since it’s almost in perfect condition minus some paint scuffs.

The black and white photos have a wonderful glow about them. Reminds me of an old Cooke Knuckler lens for 8x10 I got to use once. I don't get that with my Rolleiflex. I love that softer look it gives.

Travis this is a big help as I'm getting the G model soon, bought on eBay for a decent price surprisingly ! Great info that I wish I had watched earlier !
Been shooting the Yashica A for years that I purchased at a junk store for $25 and love it so much the upgrade should be awesome. 6x6 is my favorite format. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the tension tip. Did it with 35mm, but haven't done it with 120. The self-timer should never be used -will destroy the mechanism.

Hi Travis, the Yashica TLR’s are smashing little cameras. Sadly, over here in the UK the prices of good quality film cameras are steadily rising. So much so that some are asking Hasselblad prices for some Rolleiflex models (why!). The mercury cell batteries used in cameras of old were known to leak mercury and this vapour tended to corrode ferouse metal quite quickly. I understand this was the reason for gold plating these parts as gold is not affected by mercury vapour. They carried this on to other models such as the Electro 35 G. Take care and good luck.

in 1981 i had a one-semester photo class in high school. my parents knew everyone in the district and because of that i was able to borrow the school's defunct newspaper's cameras. Canon FTB for most stuff and a Yashica Mat 124/124G. i do NOT remember which it was.
i bought a 124G about 10 years ago and shot one roll of film which i promptly put 'somewhere'. fast forward to last December. i co-worker gave me a pair of Topcon Super Ds and 6-8 lenses and every possible filter and focusing screen. also in the tote was an unopened AE-1 kit with the 50f1.8 and a Yashica Mat 124.
it had the infamous locked up shutter from the self-timer/sync speed levers being moved at some point. dropped it off at Midwest Camera in Wyandotte Michigan who fixed it right up.
i found the roll from years ago and shot a roll of black and white and was very happy with the results...

The 124 did not have internal baffles: bright objects just outside caused internal reflections. The 124G had baffles.

Hi Travis. Really loving these videos. Total inspiration. You've 'almost' convinced me to go 100% film :-)
I've been an enthusiast photographer for over 30 years, shooting mainly digital for the last 10. At the beginning of this year I was 'given' a Pentax SV, Bronica ETRS and Nikon F4s in the space of a couple of weeks. Then I was offered a Canon EOS 1 for a crazy price I couldn't pass up. All of this film activity, plus your fantastic channel on RUclips, has definitely rekindled my love of film.
I'd love for you to review both the cameras :-) - but would like to see the Leica first. Would love to get your take on the Leica rangefinder experience. I've never shot with a Leica, but with all this film goodness happening in my life at the moment, I've certainly been thinking about it.
Great to see the videos happening more often. Appreciate the effort and time it takes to create these. Keep up the great work. You're inspiring a lot of us....
BTW - Hi from New Zealand :-)

If you're thinking about a 124G - Do it. The optics are great and the pictures are beautiful especially if all you have been shooting is 35 or digital. From Experience: If you tighten the tripod screw too much, it will cause the camera to jam. Take it off and it works just fine. This one stumped me for a little bit.

Having worked in "Electronics" in the late 60's early 70's, I can say there wasn't much "plastic" around. The 'hot new product" was 'bakelite' a powder formed in molds with heat and pressure. Great insulation properties but brittle/hard and easily fractured. I suspect the "plasticy' bits are sinitered metal powder.

Mine has serial number 164838. You have probably a newer one. I was very surprised to see it didn't have a glass mirror. The silver foil is very fragile and you must be very careful when cleaning.

Was the MAT 124 no longer made after the MAT 124G was introduced? I'm just looking for information to guestimate the age of the MAT 124 I bought. Thanks for the video, very excited to start shooting!

  • @randallstewart175
    @randallstewart175 4 года назад

He's right about its lack of build quality. The 124G is the same design as previous models, except that Yashica replaced metal drive gears with plastic to save a buck or two. Plus, the lens is quite poor; same lens from the early 1960s on. A Yashica 12 is probably the high water mark for a long series of bodies which are nearly the same. All that negative aside, this is a camera which was retailed for about $140 up to 1986, when production terminated. Yashica couldn't unload its inventory, so in 1989, it sold the whole inventory to B&H in NYC, which in turn took a couple of years to sell them new for $79.95. So, what do you expect from an $80 camera?

The 12 and 24 kind of overlap the 124. Seems like they were sold more in Europe. I sold both the 124 and the 124G. The G sold more and was probably in production longer. I agree on what you are saying about both 124...

I'd like to hear your thoughts on the original Yashica-mat with the 80mm 3.5 yashinon. I have one and love it, but im not sure if the newer models lenses are superior to mine. Cool video!

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 5 лет назад

The Yashinon 80mm lens was the same lens used over the years across all models where installed. Some Yashica TLRs from the 1950s used 3 element lenses named Yashinor. Years ago when i was more interested in TLRs and could borrow anything from my local camera store, I did a direct comparison of lens performance re sharpness and contrast on a half dozen 120 TLRs. The Yashinon came out at the bottom of the pile, and by a significant margin. I think you have to go to the 3 element lenses to find a more poor performer. It definitely does not support the multi-hundred dollar prices the Yashicamat 124G commanded until recently.(The best Tessar-type TLR lens I could find was the Rokkor in the Minolta Autocord. It slightly out-performs the Zeiss Tessar used in the Rolleiflex.)

I just got a Mat 124 online and when I turn the focus knob I feel two slight stops during a full turn of the knob. Is that normal? I am used to a smooth action during focusing, but I have never used a Yashica TLR before and was wondering if these slight stops are just tactile indicators of where I am in the focus action. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I own both, the 124 is much better made, NO plastic-parts, even the cover for the battery-compartment is metal.
The 124G doesn’t have "Gold contacts", it has goldplated contacts. Makes no difference if you have one with a 40 years old leaking Mercury battery..
Got both of mine for next to nothing, if I had to pay eBay-prices I'd go for the 124 and use the saved money on buying more film..

I never would use these meters anyhow. I usually carry my handheld meter anyhow and I do not trust any CdS meter anyhow, so the difference in the meter is utterly irrelevant to me.
I own a Yashica MAT 124 non-G and a Rolleiflex 3.5E Xenotar. I cannot really tell, which image was shot wich camera, if you put regular sized prints in front of me. The situation at which the Rollei performs a bit better is if the sun shines into the lens. But honestly: They both are not good under this condition.

The "gold" is a bit of plating on the mechanical contacts which trigger the flash. If you don't use flash - pointless. If you do use flash - pointless. The circuit just triggers the flash circuit. His remarks about gold in the meter contracts is just nonsense.

Someone may have said this already... Gold, and silver are superior conductors of electricity. They may have used it for higher accuracy, at low amps, in the light meter. I repair electric lift trucks, that's what the manufacture told us, in training. I also read when They reduced the gold and silver solder [ NASA standard ] from F4 phantom aircraft. Which made them 2000 lbs lighter.... Oh well, more useless info...

I have the much older Yashica Mat. It's a brilliant little camera, the lens is amazing too. Image is made with Tri-X Pushed 2 Stops & Developed in Ilford DD-X. flic.kr/p/SdfPJP
