I am so glad you mentioned a resource for why not to have pigs near your garden. Not only have I raised pigs for many many years, but I moved to TX from CA where E coli is a major problem. Over years the big farmers learned it was the feral hogs running through their crops and pooping that was causing the problem. We heard about it in 4H, FFA and from Ag. agencies and it was common practice never have your hogs around your food crops and always downstream from your water source. There are very specific reasons their poop is really bad which we learned also. New homesteaders should know this just to safeguard their families. I'm so proud of you for looking for scientific resources and not just any source. Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you for sharing your favourite garden books. I loved your recommendations. Can you do a video where you share your best canning, preserving and cooking books? I would love that. Thank you 🌸🙏🏼
"How to have a green thumb without an aching back" by 1960s organic gardening guru Ruth Stout. BEST gardening book ever! Made me a gardener since my first reading in that era and I'm still an organic gardener today as I near my 80th birthday. Ruth Stout gardened well into her 90s and was able to do so because of her methods. No nonsense. Straight forward. Full of humor. Find a copy for yourself, and any of her other gardening books, if you can! You won't regret it!
I started off watching this thinking "oh I bet I buy 1 of these books" I now want all these as well. I can see why they are your top picks. Valuable information, thank you, thank you!
Thank you! It's so nice to have good recommendations of resources for gardening. Especially by someone who has used them herself, successfully. Love this.
I was just thinking yesterday that maybe you guys would post another sit down video like the Q&A you did before. So happy to see it!! I love your content so much, and I’m always happy to see you and your wonderful family! Hope all is well, Nicole
Thank you so much for sharing your favorite books with us! 💚 That's really helpful to navigate through the abundance of literature which can sometimes be very difficult.🙃 In addition to that, I would be really interested in your methods for planning your garden or growing a particular vegetable in detail for example. Meaning for one vegetable you show us through one season: how you plan your beds and the neighborplants, how you prep the beds, when you sow and transplant your this vegetable, how you support them growing and harvest them and maybe some ideas how you preserve them. I know that's a lot of work to do and I understand if that's too much to ask for, but it would be definitely super helpful and interesting especially according to the size of your garden 😊 I hope you understand my comment because I'm not a native English speaker 🙈 Thank you very much for all of your amazing videos which I do love the most! 💚 Lots of love from Germany! Anna ☀️
Some great books. These are the ones that got me started. The joy of gardening by Dick Raymond. All time favorite The market Gardener by Jean Martin Fortier First time Gardener by Jessica Sowards Liz Zorabs book.
Cam certainly did a beautiful job on the shelves!! Cruz is catching up to dad! Thanks for sharing items from your past,(great grandma) and your art work! A friend from afar!! D
Could we get a video of your favorite websites and RUclipsrs to follow too!? Love binge watching all your stuff. Thanks for being an inspiration to me here in the Philippines
Thank you! I would love it if you guys did a video on your favorite preserving/canning books. I have a hard time knowing if a book uses approved methods and tested recipes so I am sticking to the ball canning book. I would love to have some more options!
I have learned to lean towards gardening books written for the area I live in. Most people in North America have no Idea what a weather pattern called a Chinook is.
Love this video, love the way you garden so definitely going to look into these books, could you do a video about all the tools you use for gardening if you haven't already, your garden is amazing and just wondering what tools you use to get your garden so neat and beautiful
Thank you for this! Thanks to finding you on RUclips I started a garden plot this fall and I have a winter wheat cover crop coming up right now! 😊 I am a complete beginner, but based on the recommendations on your website I recently purchased The No-Till Organic Vegetable Farm and The New Organic Grower by Eliot Coleman as well as The Living Soil Handbook. So far I have only almost finished the No-Till book, but I am really looking forward to the rest of these reads over the winter! I think I will order the companion planting book you recommended too! Thank you for all of the helpful info you share and for being such an inspiration! ( I am also on the journey of learning to make sourdough thanks to you and I love it! 😊) Alberta, Canada
I’ve managed to purchase a copy of ‘The Winter Harvest Handbook’. I’m loving reading it and it’s perfect for North West England. This is my first year on an allotment and I’m trying to extend the growing season in the simplest way possible. Many thanks.
That is a great book. The Four Season Harvest is more tailored towards home gardeners, but the Winter Harvest has great specific advice. And GORGEOUS pictures, lol.
Almost none of my plants made it past sprouts this year and I don't know why...😑 They just stopped growing after about 1-2 inches. My soil mixture was 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 vermeculite.
Every time I watch one of your videos I feel like I need a pen and paper so I can take notes. Which I will do one day! You have soo much valuable information! Could you perhaps make a new video about the types of seeds and varieties you use every year? I figure it might be easier to try varieties that others have used successfully vs just "winging" it. Thanks!
Yes, I don't have a video about it yet but I do have it written out here www.theseasonalhomestead.com/2022-seed-picks-for-the-garden/ What seeds I use changes yearly but I do have some tried and true varieties I plant every year.
Thank you so much! This is a great list! Have you read the Independent Farmstead? The authors are speaking at the Homesteaders of America conference this weekend and they are such a wealth of information!! Just had to share!!
all of these books sound great! i just ordered the pest and insect guide because that's what I'm struggling with lately. It's very hard to identify them properly because the internet searches always give me things that don't match each other, or its not clear about the larvae stage vs mature stage and so on. I think that one will be most useful for me right now. This is my second time watching this video because I regretted not buying the book the first time I watched, lol
I discovered your channel just a few weeks ago. I’m so glad I did I thoroughly enjoy you and your family. I would love to know your favorite sourdough book not only do I want to make bread but things like pizza crust, etc. do you have one you can suggest? Oh, and do I need that special proofing bowl? If it gets those cool circular things on the dough, how do they stay if you transfer it into a pot to cook the dough in? Anyway favorite book please
Well, that got expensive quickly, LOLOLOL. Really enjoyed this. Based on these selections, I think you would really enjoy Lee Reich's books. They are science-based but for the home grower. I have had a lot of success with fruiting shrubs thanks to Lee's work.
Will have to get that insect guide …I’m also a lover of teaching books and love that I have a physical item The I törnet might not be an option at times or one day..I can always go back too for information ..visuals are important as well…don’t tell me SHOW ME I always tell my family…so many new books to get…I NEED TO BUILD A BOOKSHELF LOL
Great rec's! I can share one book that without a doubt, is the most comprehensive soil guide, amendment techniques, etc..."True Living Organics" By The Rev; it's not necessarily about growing "vegetables" lol....but definitely worth a look regardless of whether or not you intend to grow pot. I go back to it again and again for a resource whether I'm diagnosing a leaf color issue/needs fertilizer, possibilities of soil contamination. Emphasis on living soil, myco life. It has loads of info that is applicable to growing anything.
7:22 - I have this, and I found the start so boring, I only skimmed the rest, even though we do no-dig. Time to give it another shot! Thank you for the prompt -- it wasn't cheap!
I did the same thing with my first raised bed. I remember the man I purchased from said to his helper, “She just wants compost”. I didn’t know anything.
If you want to grow your own wheat, I honestly don't know what to recommend for harvesting. I know that there are some Asian countries that have combines with a really small footprint, but I imagine it's really expensive. If you want to harvest by hand though, the RUclipsr Vegetable Academy made a budget home thresher that was pretty intriguing
Being in Florida it's just hard to garden 😪 you wouldn't think so because we have 340 days of harvest and 20 days of freeze. But we have crazy hot summers so its ugh I'm in zone 9a.
(This is Cam). I used to do business trips to Miami often, and yes, NO ONE wants to be outside in the summer there, unless it's at the beach! Sometimes when it's hot enough here we garden while the sprinklers are on :) 💧💧
I live just across the border in Georgia, in the same zone. Totally understand! I have heard people in our area have great success with shade cloth for their tomatoes and peppers! I imagine it would help other crops that are negatively affected by our intense sun/heat as well.
I really like Will Bonsall's book. It's a next-level gardening book. Once you have the vegetables mastered, he takes you to the next step. He has such great interplanting ideas: like pole beans on sunflowers. And as a vegetarian, it's so awesome to read a homesteading book that isn't all about raising animals. I found the Holistic Orchard to be frustratingly short on direct step-by-step advice. I have read the whole thing, and I still feel like I don't know anything to solve my problems in my fruit trees.
Hi, I watch 3 to 4 videos in your channel. Thank you for sharing and I appreciate your efforts on making the videos, and these are useful. Also I like to give advice about preserving food, it is that if not having salt for that it is fine. But if with salt, it is better not to consume too much as it contain much salt and we all know this is not healthy, especially for people have high blood pressure. Yea, just a reminder.
I feel like the more I leanr, the less I know. When you said compost isn't idela to grow in I became more deeply confused as I watch Charles Dowding channel and all he does is "No DIg Gardening" in compost only, with incredible results. My head is spinning and I'm struggling to grow much of anything but spending a ton of money trying. I might try the beginner book. Woof! 😅

That sounds wonderful! Will definitely look that up!
I just found that book at a thrift store for 10 cents!
Ruth stout is one of my idols also!
Her methods didn’t work for me in humid Florida. Charles Dowding uses Stout’s method, but uses compost instead of straw. That’s what has worked here.
Happy birthday! God bless 😊

Yes. This is the factor that has been missing from my gardening adventure. l am going to slowly get some of those books. Thank you very much.
Wonderful list! Great options for anyone trying to grow their own food!
Thank you so much for sharing your favorite books with us! 💚

Some great books.

This is so helpful! Your videos are such a great resource. I have gone back and rewatched them so many times.
Excellent video! Thank you so much for providing a list of books!
Thank you! I would love it if you guys did a video on your favorite preserving/canning books. I have a hard time knowing if a book uses approved methods and tested recipes so I am sticking to the ball canning book. I would love to have some more options!
Ooh, yes! I would love that as well!
Thank you! I’ll see what my library has and ask around first!
Thank you! It’s good to know what is being read on the other side of the pond.
Thank you for the great beginner recommendations! Just what I needed. Excellent video. Happy planting!
such a neat video idea! they look like great suggestions (also your shirt is super cute! especially for the fall)
Thanks for sharing! I just found your channel today and had to subscribe! 💜 I now need even more books than I already have on my wish list 🙈
This was really informative, helpful and gave a lot of good choices. Thank you.
Thanks for the book recommendations. We share the goal of growing most of our food, so your list is really helpful to me.

Sounds like you are doing the right things, and reading some good books! Should be a very plentiful future for you!!

I love Will Bonsalls book also!
You might want to tag Jess at Roots and Refuge with this video. She is doing a collaboration about her favorite or best gardening books.

Do you have an effective way to get rid of squash bugs?
Awesome video. Thank you
Do you have your top five preservation books? I have preserved for a long time but would like to get a handful for my girls to share in the kitchen.
You did such an amazing job on this video is why I ask. Loving your channel ❤
Great video!
I did the same thing with my first raised bed. I remember the man I purchased from said to his helper, “She just wants compost”. I didn’t know anything.
If you haven't heard of Korean natural farming and the book Jadam natural pesticides, those books are great too
Oh now I want all of those. Except the Holistic Orchard - I have that but not read through yet!
(probably because I'm scared of all the pruning I will have to do!)
For all German speakers: Maria Thun! Absolutely the best
Danke!
Bless you.
I'd recommend "Teaming With Microbes".

Thanks, for sharing. In what videos/reading recently I have came across most vegetables are not as health as we have been told, for most people :(
Are you talking about the nightshade family? Tomatoes, etc?
@@polgara28; Yes, Plus what I have been reading most vegetables are not as healthy/digestible as I thought...

Also, David the Good has a wonderful RUclips channel as well as many books, two specifically on Florida gardening. 💜
One of my favorite books is Heirloom Style Produce for Fun and Profit by Jason McClure
If you picked your top 2-3 favorites (under $50 for used books, if possible) what would they be?
Well, only half way through and so far I’m getting 4 of these books lol. 😂
You forgot Regenerative Agriculture from Richard Perkins😱
I haven’t read that one. Thanks for the recommendation!👍🏼
I’m currently reading Gaia’s Garden which focuses on working with nature to make gardening less work and more reward. Please take a look!

I think Dowding uses compost more like a mulch. Earthworms and roots are mixing the compost with the existing soil in the beds.
Porfavor puedes poner traducción en español 🇪🇦 gracias 🙂
True piggy can do that unless you use wormwood to deworming the pigs and humans through teas
Barbara Damrosch and her husband Eliot Coleman take up a LOT of space on my gardening book shelf🌱🌿🪴💕
