Africa is a big place with a near unknowable amount of different cultures, customs, and ways of life. Many historians believe the continent to be the origin point of all humankind. Despite this, not very many people are familiar with the local legends, folklore, and historical religions of the area. In Shin Megami Tensei, a game known for its ability to portray mythological figures from all walks of life, African deities and legends are no exception. From parallels to more well known legends, like trickster gods and shapeshifters, to wholly unique deities and caretakers of humanity. Let’s change things, and shine some light on the continent so large and mysterious, but familiar all the same. Let’s take a look at the African deities of Shin Megami Tensei.
African mythology is such underrated and under utilized in general. You have a whole continent to explore its legacy and mysticism, and yet we barely see that in most media. That is why I found always interesting see mentions and cameos in games, movies, books or shows.
Great video, Tony man! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
That's cus most media would rather focus on the quick attention like modern slave trade and war instead of actually interesting subjects
Or if they do it's usually ancient Egyptian mythology, which is cool but not the only religous believe in all of Africa.
They could show it, but they'd rather raceswap.
As a Zambian tonga I remember visibly and audibly pogging when I saw nyami nyami on the list of new demons in SMT VV and being like "THATS THE KARIBA DAM GUYY!!"
Once you srarted tellding the Anansi story, I remember3d there was a Static Shock episode with an african hero with power and enemies like this tale. Finally I understand that reference
I was super happy to see SMT represent African deities. I would love to see more representation of lesser known deities like Yamantaka or Ahura Mazda.
I hope so too, researching these gods really was interesting
i would love to see more native american and inuit deities and folklore, amarok could make an awesome demon
I really wanna see Sango in SMT. I think he would make for an interesting parallel to Thor
No joke, I was just sending your last video to a friend of mine this morning. Your videos are so good. Thanks again Tony!
This video was in the works for a while, glad it was on the mind of so many people lol
Let's go! Africa number 1. Did you know that every 60 seconds a minute passes in SMT: Africa
Now that you mentioned it, we NEED a SMT: Russia. And a cool thing is, SEGA wouldn't even need to change that much 😂
Anansi/Ananse was the "SpiderMan" before Spider-man! 💪🕷 💀
Funny you say that, in some versions of Marvel canons, he is the first Spider-man. There's even a comic of him testing some Spider-men, including Peter, Miles, and a few more.
Spider women weaver of worlds
Nyankopon and Anansi left an incredible impression on me when I played SMT5. I had a magic build and when I faced Nyankopon he basically got me trapped in an unwinnable situation because I had no demons or skills that could out damage his heals. I had to reset and lose a bunch of progress. On the flip side, Anansi is very cool aesthetically and when researching him and heard about the spider stories I got a huge wave of nostalgia and remembered I was read a book of spider stories when I was a little kid. And you showed the cover of that very book I was read in this video too! Underrated folk hero, I hope he shows up in future games.
Thanks for presenting this as an educational piece Tony, because I fear that without prior knowledge I'd have thought Onyankopon is a name for a cute Japanese regional mascot like Chiitan or Nyangostar
Using that Gojo image when saying the word "split" is too funny
Hearing Tony saying OwO over and over, with no change in his expression heals my soul
I think I learned the most about African mythology from Neil gaiman and American gods. Bizarrely enough between that and the follow-up book. Anansi boys. I really do enjoy the character of Mr. Nancy and the story of the spider stealing the Tiger's balls.
Dang, was hoping you'd have a spot for Ogun since you showed him at the start!
That Anansi story made the guy seem like a Loony Toons character.
The fake argument to trick the snake sounds like how Bugs would trick the hunter
And the sticky doll with delicious food feels like something Wily Coyote would try to catch the Roadrunner
Not shocking. Anansi stories got partially transformed into Briar Rabbit when people were forced into the American Slave trade, and Briar Rabbit himself was a direct inspiration of some aspects of Bugs Bunny.
africa is becoming a big deal recently so im glad we get an smt themed video about it instead of politics hhhhhh, i'll go watch it now
It's about time I talk about some other continents, hope you enjoy!
This one was really nice, thanks Tony
I felt so sad after defeating Onyankopon and reading his post-fight dialogue, but I had to know what comes after 4. Also Nyami Nyami’s design is peak.
African gods are either super straightforward with super complex stories. Or the most metal guy who’s only out to destroy.
I was very happy to see SMT 5: Vengeance introducing more African spirituality. Also, I heard a Metaphor: ReFantazio track in your video, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on that!
IVE BEEN DYING FOR SHAKA ZULU
Three Gods operating in one body that sounds like a high servant in the Fateverse
SMT X Type-Moon cross over
If any of these deities were portrayed by Ubisoft or Hollywood or some other hack frauds, they'd have rap music accompanying their appearance and I would heave a great big sigh.
Not even a whole minute of video and you hit us with the white pharaoh man
oh!!! you just brought back a core memory!! i know the anansi the spider book you showed and i remember reading it a lot when i was really young :) i might still have it somewhere
I really hope SMT depicts the Orisha from the Yoruba religion in future games.
We do have Ogun, but the last time he was used was in SMT 4, although he could recieve his first 3D model in Dx2 in the future.
Tony, this was so well done and respectful. Thank you!😊
Yes! It’s a good morning when there is a new video from Tony for you. 🎉

Yo! It's my other favourite SMT related channel
Yeah i was very happy when onyankopon and anansi made it into Smt V, seeing a deity from my country was truly interesting but i was sad that we did not get the trickster god showdown between Anansi and loki as a side quests.
Awesome video Tony! I’ve been a fan of you’re for a while and I’ve always loved your break downs of different gods and spiritual lore. I am a practitioner of Vodou myself so I was very excited when I saw your upload. Although if I could give one slight critique and it’s only in reference to the Loa you mentioned names “Guedhe”. His name is actually pronounced “Geh-Deh”. It’s not one syllable. It’s two. That’s my only critique! Other than that wonderful video! ❤
I'm not sure how many people are going to see this comment, but when I saw it just a small amount of African lore in this game i screamed, my family is Caribbean but my name is South African in origin, it was cool as fuck to see those characters in this game n this lore video made me happy to see
I lost my mind when Atlus announced the 3 new African demons for SMTV V. Anansi has been in all of my favorite shows (gargoyles and statics shock) so to see him in my favorite game series made me happy
I would love to see you break down the archetypes from Metaphor.
Excellent video, entertaining and informative.
New Africa lore just dropped
YEAHHH ONYANKOPON MY GOAT 🔥🔥🔥
Nice thanks so much much love to all hope everyone is having a great week
The Metaphor OST fits so well with this series!
Loved the Loa background!
Finally someone gives African mythology the recognition it deserves.
Thanks for this!
TONYYY!!! I loved the video!! Will you be doing a Metaphor video in the future??
We going back to the motherland with this one brothers. Lets goo tony, another banger video!!
4:33 Angry gets shit done.
Ah yes, OwO, the archrival of the god UwU
Great video as always~
I remember watching an animation about Anansi and the sky god a very long time ago, and this just reminded me of it. I wonder if I can find that video
Africa the Motherland, the Fatherland
Surprised that someone like Baron Samedi hasn’t been made into a recurring SMT demon yet. Seems like a perfect fit for the series. I hope that Atlus utilizes more African/Carribean deities in the future. They’ve got plenty to choose from!
Just commenting for the algorithm. I haven't watched the video yet, but I already know it'll be great as always.
Cool video as always. Question, will you do any Metaphors related videos in the future?
Anansi rules and I wish we got more of him.
An Entity asociated to the first Death of a human is so cool, It really shows what awesome ideas of devotion humanity has lost across time
I am happy and was wondering if this would be possible. Every story must be told I say.
There IS lore of ogun
Any African gods would you have liked to have seen in smt?
NO NYAMI NYAMI LORE IT’S SO JOEVER CRYING
I like how Ogun is a nerd god. I kinda wish the Germanic pantheon had an equivalent.
From what I've seen Papa "G" AKA Baron Samedi, is kind of like Charon. He quires a coin in order to take a soul into the afterlife, although not an "angel" with vices like drinking run and smoking cigars. I always though there was some sort of pimp implications based on how he's dress, but never found one.
metaphor refantazio lore when?
Now we just need Yakub in SMT
Onyankopon was one of my favorite newcomers in Vengeance. I did hate his weakness to physical though.
I really got to love Anansi! But still wondering about "what comes after four"...
As someone who works in electronics, I was highly disappointed that these weren't deities that relate to surface mount technology.
MOoooooom wake up! Tony4u just dropped some new heat!
I wish you talked about What Comes After Four
TONY POSTED BABE WAKE UP WAKE UP
Will you do the Filipino folklore?
I endorse this suggestion
I wonder if the villain in Princess and the Frog was based on Ghede
Edit: kind of, he is based on the evil counterpart of him known as Barron Samedi
Loved the video and your story telling but was a little sad that none of the Egyptian/North African gods were mentioned in the video.
Question, are there any latin american dieties? Bc i have only seen the inca sun and quetzalcoatl
There’s other Aztec gods
Africa gods are underrated
no shit there's a death god called OwO
Hell yea metaphor OST 😎
2 views under 25 seconds... admirable actually
LETS FUCKING GO
I think Ive seen more of Papa Legba of the Loa
What the OST at the background at 8:20 onward?
I swear I've heard it somewhat before.
Nah not Tony using the Velvet Room theme from Metaphor......
NZAMBI WHEN, ATLUS?
I'm curious, if Africa is so old then how come PaPa Geudhe is wearing such a modern outfit in his depictions? When did Geudhe come about?
isnt the first one have the same name as the black guy in attack on titan?
Onyankopon, yes. It's true.
3:09
Owuo whats this?
Onyankopon is a funko pop ffs
Yay another episode form marvellous loremaster SMT I'm mean Tony4You
voodoo was greatly inspired by goetic practices. voodoo is essentially goetia with african flair
OwUO
Springfield, Ohio is about to see an uptick in Loa encounters
Onyankopon my sweet BBC❤
Big Black... Creator?
Sure.
Get eaten apart.
Last i checked, Loa in smt greatly resembles the dark mark from harry potter.
