HARLEY Sportster CHOPPER Final DRIVE Chain SPROCKET Upgrade / 76 IRONHEAD SPORTSTER CHOPPER UPDATE

  • Getting more pull for highway speeds on my garage built Harley Davidson Sportster chopper that I call the Tramp. I had been running a 23 tooth sprocket on the front with a 48 tooth sprocket on the rear wheel.
On my old motor I was only able to get away with running a 22 tooth sprocket at best on the front with a 48 tooth sprocket on the rear wheel. When I tried a 47 tooth on the rear, it turned out to be too much for that motor.
After installing a later model motor in the motorcycle, I installed a 23 tooth sprocket (something that the previous motor wouldn't be able to handle) on the front with a 48 tooth sprocket on the rear wheel. To my surprise at the time of test running it (the newer motor), it performed very well with that final drive setup.
After about a year and a half of running with that sprocket ratio on the newer motor, I decide to go down one tooth on the rear sprocket, because it seemed to be very likely to me, that the bike would be able to handle it. This will be the setup her on out.
Also, there is an update about the 1976 Ironhead Sportster Chopper Saga. We're at a bit of a standstill until I can get all the suitable parts ready. My apologies for the delay in progress. But thank you so much for your patience.

When I had my 84 Iron head Sporty I put on a 1 or 2 tooth larger drive sprocket to lower the revs on the highway. It gave me a sweet spot at about 70. Before it came in about 65. Some little things can make a big difference.

I tell people all the time, belts are for holding up pants. I'm running 21/48 on my 74 ironhead, I run a hardtail with a rear disc to have more options then the stock 51. Got rid of the belt on my 98 Softail and now run 23/48 chain drive which also allows me to run a 140 rear tire, completely different animal on the highway now, 5th is actually useful now. Dig seeing a dude still messing with ironheads, I am on my 5th one now. Subbed.

After 55 mph the rpm’s and vibration are way to high to keep up with today’s traffic. I am going from a 20 tooth counter sprocket to a 23 and see what happens. I think the motors can pull a taller gear ratio just fine, but we will see!

Great build...Can you tell me what battery your using? I'm wanting to relocate mine there also. Just seems too big. Thanks

@SaddleTrampTV Finally got mine on the road thanks to a local shop and Registered! Thanks for all the great videos man. I did get that battery but ultimately it blew up (loose wire) ...oh well had it replaced. Keep up the vids ✌️
