I've got a 76' also. Like a previous comment said, an Ironhead will get you where you need to go. It might not be as far as you thought you were going, but wherever it strands you is where you needed to be, you just didn't know it.
I still got a original 78 sporty tank from the one I had. I rode my 81 Wide Glide from Louisiana to Sturgis and back. And I had a friend ride my 78 Sporty from Louisiana to Key West and back with me on my Wide Glide. The Sporty is looking good.
I bet Josh loves the fact that you brought his trip up. I don't think it went so good. I guess we will find out Wednesday but it didn't look good in the previews. Shovel heads are lets say finicky. Riding my homemade 1974 rigid shovelhead all over europe without any problems and all year round. Have a kick only gearbox, ignation points, no speedo, no turnsignals and ride the piss out of it. Shovelheads are great engins, I love them. I have also a 1997 electra for riding miss around and a 1984 1200 bobber sportster(with points), but my favorite and best running is always my shovelhead. Good video, the 76 xlch was my 1st Harley 41 years ago th3n a 80 FLH and now i ride a 01 1200 sportster, 01 FLHTC EG and a 06 Deluxe. The Deluxe I have kinda given to my son to ride now.
Cold Kickstart procedure for starting a shovelhead is, key off, 6 squirts with throttle, push kicker through twice, bring kicker to top, key on and kick hard. Should start pretty reliably then. I used to start 80 inch shovels on the lift with my hand, when timing is right you won't have a kickback. By the way, I only weighed 140 pounds at the time.
Back in the 1980s I watched a rider kick and kick and kick his shovel to no avail. He was in a fast-food parking lot, so I walked over and gave him the same advice Lew Hanna just did. Of course he did not follow my advice and continued to kick and kick. After a few dozen more kicks he did what I told him and the shovel came to life.
Well my first comment to ya... it was good seeing you take the ironhead out for a decent little ride. You get it dialed in, and you'll be able to take it across the country easily. Back in the early and mid 80s I had a hardtail sporty (still have 3 of them along with a twin cam bagger and a slim). But everyone I rode with had shovels. We would take road trips from Chicago to where ever we wanted. Key west, Phoenix, Quebec, among many others. It was different times then. So you rode what you had. Simple road maintenance kept me going (just like everyone else). The only "break down" I had on the road was a stretched out chain. My body broke down more (kidney stones, soreness..lol). Keep the videos coming. I really look forward to them.
You are 100 percent right...ironheads are the best motor that will take a beating and can be rebuilt 100 times! A good genny and VR.....good ignition and you go! They are the beast of harleys...evo's are mild mannered compared to an ironhead!
The first week of June me and a brother came through there and I was hoping to meet you but we went to scooters and he said you come on Friday. I wanted to buy that Shovel but I couldn't get off work. I'm glad you bought it, love seein' it in videos. We came from mid Missouri, ended up in Florida.

(worked the Hall of fame booth with Kevin Schwantz 18 million dollar bike) Put that on your bucket list amigo if you haven't been yet. Keep the greasy side down friend! I got a 1976 Ironhead Sportster Liberty Edition that's been in my family from day one I use it as a daily driver for years and now that I have nine motorcycles I don't have to daily drive it but I can drive it anytime I want it's a badass bike and I call it my drag bike because it hauls ass
Oh yeah, the most beautiful bikes HD ever made: the Iron-heads and the Shovel-heads. Did you know that way back in the time Harley Davidson was looking for better heads that the mid sixties Panhead-heads were and someone came up with the idea to mount Sportster Ironhead-heads on the Panhead motor and they started to call this motor: Shovelhead. A Shovelhead is basically equipped with Sportster Ironhead- heads. They've probably adjusted the Sportster heads slightly for fitting purposes for the larger displacement of the Big Twinz, altough the vast majority of the Shovel head motors until 1978 was only 1200 Cc; Sportster size ;-)

That would be a fun trip Richard , I think that about 5 to 7 hours riding a day would be about right . I just ride mine on the country roads on the SF Peninsula and after about an hour my tailbone starts to hurt a little bit . I was a gunner on a M - 48 so that may be the problem . Do the trip !
Take your cross country trip on the shovel. Your content has a different flavor than Shadetree's, and I watch both channels because I dig both flavors 😉 Besides, in my humble opinion, it's not WHAT you are riding, it's IF you are riding. Be safe, Amigo.
Love it! My first Harley was a 76 Sportster! My brother(11) and I(14) traded a shotgun and $300 for it my sophomore year...I think it was '92 or '93. It was a frame and 3 boxes of parts. The mechanics at our local dealership thought it was the coolest thing that a couple of kids were trying to put this old bike together. Those guys would help us find parts, loan us tools, and come over and help us with whatever we couldn't figure out. This was before the internet was a thing, so we were constantly asking these guys questions. Some of my best memories.
Right on man, been following this project since it’s inception. Helped inspire me to get my old 71’ iron head running and so far I’ve logged about three hinder miles on it. Keep it shiny side up man and ride on.
Great vid ! I've got an old bud working maintenance in the largest casino hotel in MS in Biloxi. I wonder if you rode by it at the end of the bridge you rode over on your way back through Biloxi. Anyway, My first Sporty was a mostly original '81 xlh. The rear top end was rebuilt by a local vintage HD shop. The owner happened to be my Mom's boyfriend when he was the local MC's garage owner in the late 60's and 70's. He promised me my first ride on his bike, and years later he delivered on his knuckle hardtail chopper. The rebuild was fairly fresh. So I stopped by his shop to ask about break in. He reassured me after 1000 miles that I could stomp the crap out of it as long as I kept straight 30 weight in the motor. And boy was he right! The faster I road the more throttle it wanted and the more hp it put out. Rebuilt by capable hands, they are power houses. HD designed them to be raced. So go figure. That was/is my philosophy around customizing bikes. Keeping it simple. Less is more. I more or less went down the same road as Billy and learned some hard lessons about life and death. I was glad to see he lifted himself out of the ashes of a true bottom to restore his good side as a true craftsman and a human being who wants to share his God given abilities with others. I'm like you learn by the seat of my pants. And when we have success there's not a greater feeling. I really enjoy your channel because you're just like me bro. Keep on wrenching!
My first Harley was a 1000cc Ironhead Roadster, I think it was a 1984 model. I didn't even know much about the Ironhead engine at the time but I decided to bus about 7 hours to pick it up and then ride it 5 hours back...in the dark...in the middle of winter, that's how keen I was to get my first Harley. But the old girl never let me down on the ride back and even never let me down for the rest of the time I owned it. Cool video brother.

Same Problem on my 74 Shovel, all I did was add a nut with a neoprene washer behind the bracket to keep clutch cable from coming loose. As for Ignition I tossed the points and installed a dyna-s electronic dual fire. My experience - 5 years they last though I’ve heard from others 10 years. Just my 2 cents worth … peace and ride safe
Hello there cowboy here I've got a 68 Sportster Ironhead with a 78 Ironhead engine and I'm really wishing I could get my hands on a proper springer front end for it one that doesn't cost a fortune as a senior disabled vet with cancer I've got dream's but little to no money I'm sure there's a lot of y'all that can relate to that love the setup on your buds new ride that's kinda where I'd like to go with mine anyway y'all keep the dirty side down always be safe healthy and happy God Bless 🤠
Thats a awesome iron head i have a 70 ironhead amen savior plunger frame I've had all kinds of Harleys but the iron Head sportsters definitely my favorite Harley I've had quite a few XS650 too all choppers or bobbers
I've been playing with the idea about getting an Iron. it's a departure from my 2 evo's. there a stock 76 iron going for $1800 near me that's been sitting in a garage for 20 yrs and not started either. I'm thinking of snatching it up and start a new chapter in my life. not sure if it's going to be a regret🤪, based on your experience with yours. not saying you regret it since it is more of a sentimental thing of keeping your buds bike alive which is admirable. we'll see.
I got 2 of them and I must say that there is nothing " sporty " about them . They look cool , sound cool and get lots of looks and smiles , but they are heavy and not that easy to ride . The first thing I did was ditch the stock carb and manifold , and went with the S & S kit that includes the air cleaner . Then I got an Accel coil and better rear shocks . Made a huge difference , in how it rides and it fires right up and runs great . I hope that you get yours and enjoy it , safely .
I rode my 1997 flstc from Knoxville TN to the Florida Alabama coast then rode the coast line to Naples Florida across to key west and back to New Bern north Carolina and back to Tennessee with my dad he rode a 2010 ultra classic. On your 76 love the style and on the shovel head could you have run the point and went with a hotter coil.
Dont know if you've ever tried Daytona Twin tec single fire ignitions. Put on on my 03 sporty and smoothed everything out significantly. Feels totally different. Paired it with their coils and Accer spark plug cables to freshen up the whole system to ensure everything is running up to spec. Always love your builds, keep on doing your thing man!
You guys kill me ....rode my shovelhead all over this country in mid 80's no issues whatsoever....He'll my Dad rode his 1955 khk cross country 3 times.... Don't understand the hating on the old bikes ...... Take care of them and they take care of you.......
I've been running Ultima duel fire electronic ignitions in both my '75 Ironhead and my '95 Fatboy. Neither have given me an issue nor left me on the side of the road ... Your mileage may vary though LOL
I have ridden a 1979 ironhead the last year xlch 1400 miles with no problem. If the electrics are good and all adjustments are current with fresh oil in the machine, I see no problem riding a sportster from n.y. to california.
Man I really like that 76.... I like how your channel has grown and the cool bikes you have now. Keep up the awesome content. You and ole shadetree surgeon need to take a rode trip. I think that would make for great content.
Shovelheads make true bikers outta ya because they do command attention from time to time. If you're the kinda of man that enjoys knowing your bike intimately then old shovels , knuckle and pan is up your alley.
I like the amf you have , I have a 76 also that’s been converted to a twelve hundred. Took a two hundred mile trip in Arkansas recently, still have things to do to it but the trip went well no breakdown.
@@SaddleTrampTV might have some questions for you in the future about my Sporty. I have a 76 Paughco frame, springer front end and all the tins. I’m just not sure about some of the assembly aspects of the bike. Unfortunately I don’t have many pictures of the bike before it was torn down. I watched your video on installing the motor to the frame. I think I might have to buy some bolts also.
I miss living in your neck of the woods. The last time I lived in the area along the coast was the first year they made the evo sportster so it's been awhile. Really enjoyed the video and the bikes. If I was down there I'd have to enjoy either a oyster or a catfish poboy and a cup of gumbo. Yes sir I miss It I do. Be safe and keep a close eye on those cagers.
@@SaddleTrampTV that's absolutely true because man I'm telling ya I have no idea where these people up here in Kentucky learned how to make gumbo because every restaurant that lists it on their menu, well, when I get it I immediately tell my wife, another place that doesn't understand, ya have to start off with "the roux" and then build up. I eat their stuff but it ain't gumbo. They know nothing about coonass cooking. The flavor's are unique to the gulf coast emanating from the swamps and bayous of extreme south Louisiana running east & west. Seeing where you work, before I went offshore, I worked for a place called W & A Engineering on or maybe in, the back bay of Passcjristian or that could have been between there and Long Beach maybe. It's been a long time. Anyway after work they could throw some crawfish parties like no place I've ever worked in my travels. I enjoy your channel. I'd really like to get rid of my 07 stage II 103 Street Glide and get into non computerized custom sporties especially since my back is really messed up and I can't handle a heavy bike anymore. I love the Sportster.☝️
My basket came with tapered head bearings that had not been tightened correctly. It seems the PO tightened them by feel with the bike sitting on the ground, not jacked up off the ground. As a result they were way too loose and were all buggered to hell and bent out of shape. I put balls in and new cups glued in with bearing gap-filling loctite because the neck got all stretched out. I forget what number but it was green iirc. Put it together with a length of allthread and wrench sockets to hold it all copacetic and Bob's your uncle.
11:10 so true - the stock rear disc on my '79 stops working if a hamster spits on it. Front is a twin piston AP Lockheed, so an emergency stop in the wet means the back of the bike tries to drive through the front.
Always great to see a new video from the Tramp.. I say quit buying bikes and put a magneto on that shovelhead.. you have more patience than I have cause I'd of torn the shovelhead down and started rebuilding and painting etc everything from the ground up
For the breather... clamp on a section of rubber hose and run it to drip on the chain or put on a catch can. The catch can will need to be emptied regularly but you won't leave oil spots everywhere.

Nice old sporty, I've watched a few of your videos, didn't realize your on the coast. I lived in Long Beach for many years. Got tired of the heat so when I retired I moved to the mountains in western PA. Great riding but can only ride six or seven months a year, bummer.
REALLY. Rode a 55 across this country. Then rode a 78 bowling ball bike from coast to coast. Took a '76 completely apart bored and stroked it. The bike gets close to 50mpg at 80 miles an hour and have cris- crossed this country with it.
I've got a 79 iron head and she has been running great I ride mine every weekend between 50 and a 100 miles sometimes more knock on wood but these old bikes are the best this is my first bike and have learned so much since I've had it just got to stay positive

Yeah I remember looking for parts for my first Harley before the internet. That was when catalogs were the go-to.

Great vid ! I've got an old bud working maintenance in the largest casino hotel in MS in Biloxi. I wonder if you rode by it at the end of the bridge you rode over on your way back through Biloxi. Anyway, My first Sporty was a mostly original '81 xlh. The rear top end was rebuilt by a local vintage HD shop. The owner happened to be my Mom's boyfriend when he was the local MC's garage owner in the late 60's and 70's. He promised me my first ride on his bike, and years later he delivered on his knuckle hardtail chopper. The rebuild was fairly fresh. So I stopped by his shop to ask about break in. He reassured me after 1000 miles that I could stomp the crap out of it as long as I kept straight 30 weight in the motor. And boy was he right! The faster I road the more throttle it wanted and the more hp it put out. Rebuilt by capable hands, they are power houses. HD designed them to be raced. So go figure. @@SaddleTrampTV Thanks bro! Yeah, I loved the Biker Build Off series. So many amazing designers/fabricators of the era. Of course one of my favs was Indian Larry. That was/is my philosophy around customizing bikes. Keeping it simple. Less is more. I more or less went down the same road as Billy and learned some hard lessons about life and death. I was glad to see he lifted himself out of the ashes of a true bottom to restore his good side as a true craftsman and a human being who wants to share his God given abilities with others. I'm like you learn by the seat of my pants. And when we have success there's not a greater feeling. I really enjoy your channel because you're just like me bro. Keep on wrenching!

My first Harley was a 1000cc Ironhead Roadster, I think it was a 1984 model. I didn't even know much about the Ironhead engine at the time but I decided to bus about 7 hours to pick it up and then ride it 5 hours back...in the dark...in the middle of winter, that's how keen I was to get my first Harley. But the old girl never let me down on the ride back and even never let me down for the rest of the time I owned it. Cool video brother.

Shovel, all I did was add a nut with a neoprene washer behind the bracket to keep clutch cable from coming loose.
As for
Ignition I tossed the points and installed a dyna-s electronic dual fire. My experience - 5 years they last though I’ve heard from others 10 years. Just my 2 cents worth … peace and ride safe

Hello there cowboy here I've got a 68 Sportster Ironhead with a 78 Ironhead engine and I'm really wishing I could get my hands on a proper springer front end for it one that doesn't cost a fortune as a senior disabled vet with cancer I've got dream's but little to no money I'm sure there's a lot of y'all that can relate to that love the setup on your buds new ride that's kinda where I'd like to go with mine anyway y'all keep the dirty side down always be safe healthy and happy God Bless 🤠
Thats a awesome iron head i have a 70 ironhead amen savior plunger frame I've had all kinds of Harleys but the iron Head sportsters definitely my favorite Harley I've had quite a few XS650 too all choppers or bobbers

I've been playing with the idea about getting an Iron. it's a departure from my 2 evo's. there a stock 76 iron going for $1800 near me that's been sitting in a garage for 20 yrs and not started either. I'm thinking of snatching it up and start a new chapter in my life. not sure if it's going to be a regret🤪, based on your experience with yours. not saying you regret it since it is more of a sentimental thing of keeping your buds bike alive which is admirable. we'll see.
Once you get to know them, they're a lot of fun. And simple too.
I got 2 of them and I must say that there is nothing " sporty " about them . They look cool , sound cool and get lots of looks and smiles , but they are heavy and not that easy to ride . The first thing I did was ditch the stock carb and manifold , and went with the S & S kit that includes the air cleaner . Then I got an Accel coil and better rear shocks . Made a huge difference , in how it rides and it fires right up and runs great . I hope that you get yours and enjoy it , safely .

I rode my 1997 flstc from Knoxville TN to the Florida Alabama coast then rode the coast line to Naples Florida across to key west and back to New Bern north Carolina and back to Tennessee with my dad he rode a 2010 ultra classic. On your 76 love the style and on the shovel head could you have run the point and went with a hotter coil.

Dont know if you've ever tried Daytona Twin tec single fire ignitions. Put on on my 03 sporty and smoothed everything out significantly. Feels totally different. Paired it with their coils and Accer spark plug cables to freshen up the whole system to ensure everything is running up to spec.

You guys kill me ....rode my shovelhead all over this country in mid 80's no issues whatsoever....He'll my Dad rode his 1955 khk cross country 3 times.... Don't understand the hating on the old bikes ...... Take care of them and they take care of you.......
I've been running Ultima duel fire electronic ignitions in both my '75 Ironhead and my '95 Fatboy. Neither have given me an issue nor left me on the side of the road ... Your mileage may vary though LOL
I have ridden a 1979 ironhead the last year xlch 1400 miles with no problem. If the electrics are good and all adjustments are current with fresh oil in the machine, I see no problem riding a sportster from n.y. to california.

I like the amf you have , I have a 76 also that’s been converted to a twelve hundred. Took a two hundred mile trip in Arkansas recently, still have things to do to it but the trip went well no breakdown.

I’m just not sure about some of the assembly aspects of the bike. Unfortunately I don’t have many pictures of the bike before it was torn down. I watched your video on installing the motor to the frame. I think I might have to buy some bolts also.

I miss living in your neck of the woods. The last time I lived in the area along the coast was the first year they made the evo sportster so it's been awhile. Really enjoyed the video and the bikes. If I was down there I'd have to enjoy either a oyster or a catfish poboy and a cup of gumbo. Yes sir I miss It I do. Be safe and keep a close eye on those cagers.
The food, I think, is the only reason I never moved away from here permanently.
@@SaddleTrampTV that's absolutely true because man I'm telling ya I have no idea where these people up here in Kentucky learned how to make gumbo because every restaurant that lists it on their menu, well, when I get it I immediately tell my wife, another place that doesn't understand, ya have to start off with "the roux" and then build up. I eat their stuff but it ain't gumbo. They know nothing about coonass cooking. The flavor's are unique to the gulf coast emanating from the swamps and bayous of extreme south Louisiana running east & west. Seeing where you work, before I went offshore, I worked for a place called W & A Engineering on or maybe in, the back bay of Passcjristian or that could have been between there and Long Beach maybe. It's been a long time. Anyway after work they could throw some crawfish parties like no place I've ever worked in my travels. I enjoy your channel. I'd really like to get rid of my 07 stage II 103 Street Glide and get into non computerized custom sporties especially since my back is really messed up and I can't handle a heavy bike anymore. I love the Sportster.☝️

My basket came with tapered head bearings that had not been tightened correctly. It seems the PO tightened them by feel with the bike sitting on the ground, not jacked up off the ground. As a result they were way too loose and were all buggered to hell and bent out of shape. I put balls in and new cups glued in with bearing gap-filling loctite because the neck got all stretched out. I forget what number but it was green iirc. Put it together with a length of allthread and wrench sockets to hold it all copacetic and Bob's your uncle.
11:10 so true - the stock rear disc on my '79 stops working if a hamster spits on it. Front is a twin piston AP Lockheed, so an emergency stop in the wet means the back of the bike tries to drive through the front.
Always great to see a new video from the Tramp.. I say quit buying bikes and put a magneto on that shovelhead.. you have more patience than I have cause I'd of torn the shovelhead down and started rebuilding and painting etc everything from the ground up
If it were a slab side shovel, I might've done that.

For the breather... clamp on a section of rubber hose and run it to drip on the chain or put on a catch can. The catch can will need to be emptied regularly but you won't leave oil spots everywhere.

Nice old sporty, I've watched a few of your videos, didn't realize your on the coast. I lived in Long Beach for many years. Got tired of the heat so when I retired I moved to the mountains in western PA. Great riding but can only ride six or seven months a year, bummer.
I think that's the one thing I can appreciate about being here is that you can ride almost every day.

REALLY. Rode a 55 across this country. Then rode a 78 bowling ball bike from coast to coast. Took a '76 completely apart bored and stroked it. The bike gets close to 50mpg at 80 miles an hour and have cris- crossed this country with it.

I've got a 79 iron head and she has been running great I ride mine every weekend between 50 and a 100 miles sometimes more
knock on wood but these old bikes are the best this is my first bike and have learned so much since I've had it just got to stay positive
