Emmanuel Amunike, Victor Ikpeba, Samson Siasia, Rashidi Yekini the goal machine. These guys were unstoppable in their generation. They went on to win a gold medal in the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta against the mighty Brazil. I can explain more and more.

On point! I was 15. Etched into my memory. All the streets went agog, and I woke up. I sneaked outside and watched the remaining match. After Nigeria won, I couldn't stand the euphoria; so I went with the crowd jubilating. I went too far with the crowd, against my father's order. As I was returning home, I was expecting to be locked out or flogged. But none happened. It seemed my father who didn't like football was carried away by the euphoria.

Nigeria won the Olympics, they had the 1994 World Cup within their grasp when they led Italy 3-0 in the quarters and then they all took a nap on the field and lost the game. One great trophy and extended quality performance in beating Brazil and Argentina in competition make this not only the greatest African team but one of the world's all-time great teams. Go bray your nonsense somewhere else! All praise to Cameroun but AFCON is not really the top of world football, so they have not outdone Nigeria. And Ferhat, if you agree with Prince you are an idiot too. To the great teams that never won the World Cup you jackasses can add the 1974 Poles with Lato, Gadocha, Zarmach, Deyna, Gorgon et. al. what a generation of great players, a team where a player like Okocha and Ikpbeba comes from the bench, Victor Ikpeba was in the 94 set of super eagles, in fact he was in the team won the nations cup in 94 but didnt play a match, he was on the bench all through the tournament as one of the youngest player in the team, 2 years after he was one of the best player in europe and the best player in french league getting dubbed as the "prince of Monaco" in 1997 he won the African player of the year, Okocha was very good but he couldnt get 90mins play cos there were better players in the team, there is something people didnt know, in 1993 some talented youngster where introduced to the team for trials to see if they could break into the team, it was only 4 players out of the 15 youngster that managed to break into the team and they were Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Sunday Oliseh, Victor Ikpeba, and Emmanuel Amuneke, players like Taribo west, Tijani Babangida, Nwankwo Kanu , Garuba Lawal and some other talented youngster who were between the ages of 17 and 19 were dropped,
one of the youngster Emmanuel Amuneke who scored the 2 goals that gave Nigeria the trophy the trophy in 1994 final against Zambia was playing his first match for Nigeria having been benched all through the tournament, our coach westahorf said he was kept all through the tournament and was brought in at the final as a joker, in 1995 he went ahead to win the 2nd best African Fooballer of the year behind George Weah, this is to show how talented this team was, they were Ranked the 4th best team in the world and the most entertaining team in the world ahead of teams like Brazil, Atlanta 96 was a beauty to behold because it gave the opportunity to mix the established super eagles with the youngsters, the dropped youngsters from the super eagles in 1994 now had the opportunity to showcase, they took the world my storm and beat world football powerhouses Brazil and Argentina enroute winning the trophy, on paper and on field they were the best players, the youngsters dropped in 1994 were already playing for big clubs in european champions league , Oliseh for Juventus, Taribo west for AC milan, Amuneke for Barcelona, Ikpeba for Monaco Kanu for Ajax including other players in the team, they had more players playing in top clubs in Europe than Brazil and Argentina so it was not a surprise beating Brazil in semi final and Argentina in Final to win the throphy in Atlanta 96

Ikpeba couldn’t make Nigeria starting 11 cos of Yekini just like Wilson Oruma who was one of the best midfielders in French league couldn’t make starting 11 cos of Okocha , and don’t forget that the victorious u17 team in 1993 produced lots of talents like Kanu, babayaro, oruma, Ojigwe, in fact Oruma was the best player in U17 followed by Kanu, Kanu was immediately snapped by Ajax at 16 years and he won the champions league with the star studded Ajax team at the age of 18yrs old and played a key role in the Ajax team despite so young, so when Yekini began to age Ikpeba couldn’t take over cos of Kanu, Kanu took over from Yekini as our striker he was better than ikpeba at his prime and he also won the African footballer of the year so it is understandable why Ikpeba never made our starting 11

This is the Greatest team ever assembled in the Afrikan continent and by right we were supposed to easily win this 94 world cup. There was no team who could match the super eagles in all the the departments. And in south Africa young boys my age at the time we used to model ourselves after these guys and they use to call me finidi George. When they were knocked out of the world cup my sister use to jokingly remind me that I was crying like a baby and would even refuse to eat. Hope Nigeria will give us a team similar to this one again.

Na lie o!... We knew what we had, hence we still remember them... How can anyone ever forget how we won the '94 Nations cup with class?... We had one of the best strikers in the world in the person of Ye-King who single handedly brought Victoria Setubal from then 2nd division to 1st div. by the time he was leaving Portugal for Greece, Goal keepers in Portugal did a send forth party for. We had the best right winger in the world Finidi George of Ajax, the best team in Europe then. We Had Peter Rufai, 3 best goalie in the world. Who will ever forget Oliseh?... The Lad played for Ajax, Juventus, and Borussia Dortmund. This super eagles had the fastest attack in the world in the 94. Oliseh's holding role was second to none. Thompson Oliha was an amazing "dirty" worker... ceaselessly yet efficiently mopped up all the mess in and around the midfield. Samson Siasia was an amazing No.9... Fun fact, Siasia was our main striker for a while and was supported by Yekini. Remember at the USA '94 world cup we were voted the most entertaining team in the tournament despite being knocked out at the second round stage. We also got the fair play team award for the group stages.
I think we lost it after we hired Shuaibu Amodu (who was a technical wiz) then fired him twice after he qualified us for the 96 nations cup, and the 98 world cup... we never got back to our true selves after then...

...5th (Apr 1994) was our highest ever FIFA ranking and 82nd (Nov 1999) our lowest - as of December 2019, our position was 31st. Note that the new ranking system was launched by FIFA in late 1993 - Super Eagles then triumphed in Tunisia (AFCON1994) and accrued many points as a result, rising up the list to 5th. If we are brutally honest with ourselves, we will admit our football has regressed since then.

...abi I lie, @@chimerezeemeruwa? The facts dey there for everyone to see.
There is however one sophisticated argument - it is based on the premise that our confederation's poor regional strength (which is used in the calculations for rankings) remains in the bottom bracket, along with Asia and the mighty Oceania.
For the rankings calculations, each confederation is assigned a weighting between 0.85 and 1.0, based on the relative performance of the confederations in the last three World Cups.
Africa (CAF), Asia (AFC) and Oceania (OFC) all share the lowest regional strength weighting, 0.85. At the other extreme, Europe and South America enjoy a weighting of 1.0.
Our Super Eagles play the vast majority of our competitive games against African opposition. So, the only real opportunity African nations have to optimise their points score in the rankings is during the World Cup. Yes, every four years.
An African team winning AFCON will always bag less rankings points than their counterparts winning the European or South American equivalent. Etc., etc.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that unless African teams excel during the World Cup, the differentials in the calculations mean that, over time, African nations will continue to slide down the pecking order in the FIFA's rankings.
Supporter work no easy. Na wa.

Great video. Love Nigerian style of soccer. So beautiful, effortless and natural. Talented players with great enthusiasm and pride. I spent little part of my childhood in Maidaguri, Nigeria. I love Nigeria and people of this country.

I cheered for them in two WC 94 + 98. They deserved better. Greets from Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦
