MGSV:TPP Soviet Guard Smoke Break Conversations

  • The little conversations and "break behavior" of the guards in MGSV:TPP are fun to watch. I still remember when I thought the guards taking a lunch break in Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold was fascinating. As it turns out, the Russian guards have a favorite smoke break location at the power plant parking lot. If you visit the location multiple times, you'll get different conversations, an interesting mix of real-world history and MGS fiction. I'm sure there may be more? It's cool watching their body language while smoking, it almost looks like watching people really take a 2-minute smoke break at work. So far I've seen eleven different ones, which I recorded here:
    1. Hind Gunships in Afghanistan
    2. Fossil Fuels and Capitalists
    3. Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov
    4. Casualties in the Afghan War
    5. Surveillance Cameras
    6. Ukraine
    7. Decoy Balloons
    8. Soviet Ethnic Propaganda Posters
    9. Big Boss in Afghanistan
    10. Use of D-Mines to Replace Boots on the Ground
    11. MLRS/Katyusha Rocket Launchers

Conversations are indeed very funny. Many of them are related to the enemy response system. For example, if your headshot preparedness is high, the guards will talk about getting helmets. If your fulton response is high, they will talk about them seeing strange balloons that make soldiers disappear and so on. Also, you can hear your own soldiers at mother base talking to game-related events, such as the parasite disease, Emmerich, D Dog, Quiet. I even heard two girls talking about "Team Ocelot" and "Team Miller." A great touch from Kojima definitely.

Very cool I wasn't aware of that! I've basically been at the point where I just free roam now looking to listen to conversations and smoke breaks hahah

If that's what you enjoy, go for it. What's great about this game is that you can do almost anything you want. I remember when I first got it, I used to play mostly on free roam myself, but in my case, it was basically because I sucked at Missions, hahah.
You can get valuable info from those conversations. If you hear the one that goes, "Have you heard the stories of lone operative sneaking in the area", that means that you are just a rumor, they don't know who you are, who sent you or why you're there. So if they spot you, they will react more slowly and won't have great firepower or enough radios and you can get away fairly easily.
But if you keep triggering combat alerts, their talks will change, "They say that the man sneaking in the area is Bog Boss" or something like that. Now they know who you are. That means that if you're spotted, they will react quicker and they'll have greater fire power, etc. Same goes for fulton, if the preparedness is low or mid, you will hear, "Many soldiers have been disappearing..." and they will take longer to shoot the ballon. If it is high, they will know Big Boss is behind it and will shoot the ballon right away. I could go on, but I don't want to make it any longer that it already is, hahah. Sorry.

That's awesome, thank you for the insight on that, I didn't know that. I kind of miss some of the elements from the older games, like in MGS3 when you knock out the food they start walking around saying "I'm so hungry, I haven't eaten in days" and eventually get to the point where they start shooting at lower ranking soldiers and making them dance for entertainment. That or MGS4 where if you use emotion rounds or the inhibitor on PMCs, each combat alert makes them progressively less emotionally stable. I used to spend hours in the Central America mission in MGS4 making all the guards go nuts. I also miss MGS2 where the HQ dispatcher would say, "Why are you LATE making your status report?" and as you ratchet up the chaos both the guards and the radio dispatcher get more emotional. "He got another one! We need to find this bastard, NOW!" haha

Agree 100%. Number 6 is Chernobyl, right?

    • @sidekickdanieldg
      @sidekickdanieldg  7 лет назад +9

I'm not sure; he was talking about "ZATOs" (zakrytye administrativno-territorial'nye obrazovaniya; closed administrative-territorial formations) which were basically secret towns built around top secret projects. It sounds like Chernobyl because of the tongue in cheek reference to the party line of Soviet reactors being safe, but it's hard to tell. MGS games are notorious for throwing around words but not necessarily using them in proper context. To keep track of MGS you have to automatically assume with each sequel or prequel the world as you previously knew it is out the door and different for the latest retcon canon. I'm still wondering though how it's possible that in MGS 1 through 4, Ocelot/Liquid Ocelot is basically a narcissistic sociopath, but in MGS5 he basically turns into a clone of late 2000s acting career Brad Pitt, where he's an ENFJ Myers-Briggs personality type, doing things like patting little kids on the shoulders, coaching Diamond Dogs members like a JV football coach, and best of all, being the sane level-headed one while Kaz is basically the maniac. There's also the aspect of how Ocelot hates French in TPP, but he speaks it so eloquently in 1-4 lol

3:12 "Ne Karkat'"(не каркать/не каркай) can be translated as "no cawing". In this context "cawing" means "jinx or attracting disaster". There is a believe in russian culture, that if you assume bad things will happen out loud, you jinx yourself and increase chance of it actually happen. This solder assume that he will die next. There is also believed, that if you already croaked, to prevent disaster you need to knock on wood 3 times and spit over the left shoulder also 3 times.

Now, I understand learning a language is very hard. Russian probably even more so. But I wish their was something that began to change the English subs into Russian subs as you the player began learning the language as well. Of course it'd be optional. Someone shouldn't HAVE to learn another language just to enjoy the game but listening to Russians (or other natives) talking long enough it would have been neat to actually learn some of the language. Like a real soldier deployed to these places. People dont just start speaking Russian because they show up. The soldiers learn the language instead.
Also as online gamers we're constantly put face to face with people who may not understand our language and vice versa. Would be nice if a game with a topic like MGS would jumps start those who may not have taken the time to learn another language by giving them some foreknowledge on the subject besides "VOCAL CORD PARASITE ATTACK SOUND"
