The song came out in 1979, 7 months after my uncle's murder. It should have been dedicated to his wife.

Absolutely no better real country singer than Gene Watson. He is outstanding with every song he sings. Makes you feel as though you are living with the song he is singing or have heartbreaking memories from the song he is singing. No one can sing a tear jerking song better than Gene Watson. If he isn't in the Country Music Hall of Fame then no one should be.

I used to sing with Gene's brother Jessie at my Uncle's house and at church.
Imagine my surprise when I got to meet Gene Watson and sing with him in his garage. Jessie and my Uncle wanted him to here me sing a song. He liked the song so much, he asked me to teach it to him.
That was when he lived in Houston Texas.
Years later a friend took me to see him in concert and he remembered me.😊
My sister n law traveled many places to see gene Watson and loved his music she passed 9/3/22😂

My husband and I danced to this until 2008. He told me this was what he wanted at his farewell party. His family chose otherwise but I still listen to it. Miss him. Love this song from my soul ❤

Gene Watson is one of the greats. We saw him , he was young and we were young at Mama's country showplace on Covington Highway near Decatur Georgia and became immediate fans. We are nearing 80 and still enjoy his music. Country music is no longer country music. Long live the 60's--70's--80's.

I have a 2 year old Great Grandson that I have sang this song to since he was a newborn. He Loves it and now he turns 3 in January and he sings it to me only he sings I'll be sad when you're gone. Melts my heart but that's Our song. What beautiful Memories this song has for both of us.
I've watched this video so many times, but now I watch to see the reactions and expressions of some of the greatest country stars who ever lived as they witness first hand the greatness of this voice. The respect, recognition, and awe these legends, many who had much bigger, shinier careers than Gene ever had, pay to him so spontaneously leaves no doubt how incredible Gene Watson was among his peers.
He did it sitting down. He never flinched. ( No special effects needed ) Pure vocal talent. I so miss real country radio like this !!!!

@@mugsylucas4966 they do have one. It's called Willie's Roadhouse on Sirius XM. They play all of the classics to include a fair amount of Gene Watson's hits. Willie Nelson's daughter Paula is one of the DJs. It's awesome.
I realize now why my older brother liked this song, he passed in January at 69 in Georgia , he still loved his wife and wanted her back more than I ever thought but it didn't happen, he passed alone in a rehabilitation facility, he thought he'd make it home but his heart and lungs were too far gone. Hope to have a memorial for him and play this song soon.
Rip Brother I think of you every day and regret not coming to Georgia to be with you, you were my hero and I was yours.

I love the way they reacted when he sang the "big note" at the end. And he held it all the way to the end - after all these years, he held that note. That's hard to do, and keep it on pitch, and he did it sitting down!!

We saw him about a month ago in East Texas and as always, he puts on a superb show. He'll be 80 on October 11th and he sounds exactly the same as this video. He has an absolutely amazing voice! It's such a crying shame that he's been SO underrated by Nashville! Nothing fancy, just honesty and integrity with style and class. One thing that Nashville is definitely lacking today . He should have been in the CM Hall of Fame YEARS ago. Such a fantastic singer! It's proven that his music has transcended the test of time!
