I was so frustrated with my drawings and lines today since we have moved to half bodies and need to make longet strokes. Was watching a bunch of vids from watts atelier and proko and stuff but I just could not get the lines they did! Turns out I didnt know how to sharpen my pencil all this time! Thank you so much!! I cant belive I have been sharpening my pencils wrong for a whole year!
Thanks for this! I was definitely sharpening my pencils wrong before. Also, great to see a left handed artist making videos. Much easier to conceptualize (since I'm a lefty)
Great, educational, fun. I like how you don't take yourself too seriously, even including outtakes at the beginning and end. Thanks for this, every time I try charcoal pencils, I fail because I can't get the tone. Today I decided to look up alternate sharpening methods (I figured that using a sharpener was probably my problem) and found your vid! Thanks for this!
I have seen and several different explanation of how to sharpen a pencil, but is one was of the hook, you explained it in a scientific way so i can easily understand it., can't wait to part 2.
Suggestion: if you use woodless leads with mechanical pencil holders you can avoid cutting away the wood and go straight to the sandpaper step. One other point about holding the pencil at an angle to the surface is it helps to keep the tip sharp.
oh thank u so much this really helped there are other good vids that show this but u did it in slow detail now i think i can do this with confidence thanks great master
terrific video i am learning more of your tutorial I've been drawn for 30 years now I know how to sharpen the pencil the correct way alright to subscribe your channel thank you so much I appreciate it
Karl...I am a retired Computer illustrator from the Boeing Co. in Seattle, and am trying to get back into pastel painting...I notice that you are severely Left Handed, as am I! And my mantra to all my wrong handed friends is this...All people are born Right Handed, but only the greatest overcame it! Ha Ha! I have four brands of pastel pencils...Othello, Derwent, Conte, and Faber Castel...Colin Bradley lead me into the Faber brand, and as I see he is a rep for the company, and a purist, and won't use anything else to paint with in his videos...Do you have any opinions on how to use soft to hard pastel pencils in your everyday art production? If so could you share with me how best to understand the nuances of all my four brands of pencils??? Help...I'm 63.6 years old and ain't getting any younger! Thanks for the demos!
Hey digiphot2, I agree with Colin, I seem to be favoring the Faber Castel for drawing right now. However, whenever I work with pastel I'm not looking so much for the convention but how to find new and interesting ways to open up the whole drawing and painting experience. So I don't feel right about giving you a formula. The question you have to ask is: Am I looking to improve my skills? or...am I looking to explore outside the convention? ....meaning, creatively. By the way, when you're working creatively, you're still developing your skills. Best.
Hello, Im a new artist just staring up with professional pencils, but recently i got no wood graphite pencils as a gift but idk how to properly sharpen them, any tips on how to sharpen those pencils correctly?
At 2 min 25 sec. you say that the convex shape of the exposed charcoal will make a stroke that doesn't have edges at both sides ( I think you mean ends, not sides ) . If the charcoal is flat rather than convex, the stroke will have edges. Could you show these strokes to us? ...one with edges, one without? I don't have much hope that I will get a reply. I see that the last reply was offered 3 years ago :o(
If I said sides and not ends then you would be correct, I should have said ends. If you make a stroke with a pencil of any kind and the sides are not slightly convexed then you will get an edge at least on one end and probably on both ends of your broad stoke. I suggest that when you draw with a pencil sharpened as I have described you could use several sheets of paper to cushion your stoke. Try this experiment for yourself. One with flat sides and one with convex sides and you will quickly see what I'm cautioning about. On the other hand, you may wish a hard edge on one side of your stroke. To do this you will still sharpen the same way, but you will lift your pencil slightly toward the tip while making your stroke, then you will get the desired result.
I've always sharpened pencils like this with a pocket knife but always tried to make it look like it came out of a sharpener but I just sharpened my charcoal pencil like this.
Hello artist. My name is Aurelio Moreno Perez and I want to tell you that I have look at your videos and although my English is not good to tell to you all that I like, Well I will try. You are good and I am agree with what you say, there are many that talk more than they do or can do. I am almost 80 year old, to live out of this all my life have really been a real goal. I never gor rich but it is because the things that have been interested to me have been to do the things as they have to be done more than how many people wanted. My work is and it have been a case of enjoy my self with what I do and still I do and now even I am going to enjoy looking at you that I telling the true. Even better. Congratulation Karll if you ever come to Malaga Spain get in touch with me and we will go to draw the people
If you use a regular pencil sharpener, you won't get the shape or size charcoal piece that Karl is describing in his video. You'll just get a pointy end, and that's it. Also, most charcoal is so soft that it'll just break off in a pencil sharpener. I've had it happen to me a LOT before learning this sharpening technique.

Thanks for this! I was definitely sharpening my pencils wrong before. Also, great to see a left handed artist making videos. Much easier to conceptualize (since I'm a lefty)
From sharpening to shadowing.. wonderfully explained. Thank you very much.

Awesome! I am totally switching to pencil and sharpening this way!
I have seen and several different explanation of how to sharpen a pencil, but is one was of the hook, you explained it in a scientific way so i can easily understand it., can't wait to part 2.
came here to see how to sharpen a pencil, ended up learning a bit of shadowing. Awesome ^^

karl is that a blue conte stick that you are using?
It is blue pastel stick. I think, Nupastel. I use it for demos because you can see it from across the room.
I love that smile~!!! hahaha btw this video is very useful
Can black pastel pencils substitute for the charcoel pencil
I do it all the time.
nice buddy keep it up
where you get the blue soft pencil? must not be charcoal
The pencil you're refering to is probably a Faber Castell PITT pastel
Can u do this with a grafite pencile
👍👍👍
oh awsome thx
I like his humor of self-criticism.

Too bad the video cut out at the moment you started to talk about how to rock the pencil while sanding it, Karl.
Why not use a sharpener??

I do sharpen pencil using blade but everyday my pencil is gone we keep buying pencil.
