    • @JakeBussellArt
      @JakeBussellArt  2 года назад +29

      Hi Pebble888! As more lead is exposed, the pencil should stay usable for longer. As well as improved shading, it also helps with freedom of line. When you use a traditional pencil sharpener the wood of the pencil can touch the paper and get in the way of creating fully expressive marks. I believe there should be no interference from the artist's mind to the tip of the pencil and I find sharpening this way gives me that confidence! All the best -Jake

      @@JakeBussellArt Awesome channel and great videos. I am a musician by study. Almost done with my undergrad in music performance. But I have always wanted to learn the visual arts like how I studied music. I feel so new. Which is funny because when I started studying music knowingly I never felt this like I was starting from the bottom of the barrel then again I was very young then so I probably wouldn't have known. Question: When you started studying visual arts, like "Essential Elements" for young musicians, were there any books that you were introduced to as a beginner to understand basic fundamentals and guidelines? Thanks

    • @JakeBussellArt
      @JakeBussellArt  4 года назад

      @@elishamartinthechannel1859 Hi Elisha, great question. I love your analogy of learning art and music. Wonderful songs on your channel by the way!
      There are lots of good beginner art books. The first one I had was ‘The Fundamentals of Drawing: A Complete Professional Course for Artists’ By Barrington Barber. I really enjoyed it, although it perhaps doesn’t contain everything. Good thing is nowadays there are plenty of online resources like Proko, Rapidfireart and even communities like reddit.com/r/learntodraw that will help to get you started. Find a learning style that suits you.
      One of my favourite drawing books is ‘Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters’ by Robert Beverly Hale. Although I wouldn’t recommend it to beginners. But something to work up to.
      Let me give you an example of how you could approach a drawing and how some of the fundamental elements come into play... Imagine you are going to draw a still life of a teacup. (it’s in front of you and you want to draw it)
      We can split the fundamentals into 3 Groups: Observation, Understanding and Intent.
      Observation - You will need to practise hand eye coordination and your ‘seeing eye’. This will come naturally over time by drawing from life and doing exercises such as blind contour drawing, negative space, alignment, estimating ratios and measuring.
      Understanding - It would help to know the form and structure of the teacup. What simple 3D shapes is a teacup made of? Use your imagination to visualise a box and use it to help you work out the ellipses and curved forms. Study the way light falls on objects and different materials. Knowing the types of shadow that you can expect to see will help you manipulate form.
      Intent - What do you want to say with your drawing? You may want to render the teacup in a way that best suits the scene. Calm and tranquil perhaps. Or a smashed teacup with dramatic lighting!! You could arrange the composition and colours to reflect this. What do you want the viewer to see… and more importantly, feel?
      The idea is to study these fundamentals individually until they become part of your subconscious. So that when coming to make a drawing or a ‘work of art’, you’re relaxed and the pencil or brush is an extension of your arm. There is no interference from brain to paper. Expression is then fully realised. Much like a practised musician!
      I hope this helps in some way. I hope to make a video on ‘How to learn to draw’ in the future that will cover the fundamentals. Best of luck. - Jake

    Does using this method to sharpen a graphite pencil keep the pencil/graphite sharper than if a pencil sharpener was used? or is this method solely just to enable better shading techniques? Thanks

      Hi Carl, good question! As more lead is exposed, the pencil should stay usable for longer. As well as the shading you mentioned it also helps with freedom of line. Doesn't the long lead/ graphite break while writing? Or is this technique for for shading only? I sharpen with a knife as well with about 7mm lead exposed and it keeps on breaking. Same thing with the colors... Any trick am missing?

    • @JakeBussellArt
      @JakeBussellArt  4 года назад +1

      Hi Kushagra, thanks for your comment! I use this sharpening method for all applications (drawing and shading). That sounds like the right length of exposed lead, however I find that with very dry chalk pencils and cheaper brands of pencil the lead can break easily, I suggest sharpening the lead shorter. Also, if a pencil has been dropped, the lead inside is likely to break and becomes unusable. Try some different brands of pencil to see if you have better results. Keep drawing! All the best, Jake
