- 92-year-old Air Transport Auxiliary veteran Joy Lofthouse returns to the skies in a Spitfire 70 years on from the end of World War 2.
Seven decades after her last flight in the iconic plane, Joy described the experience as "lovely: it was perfect", making her feel "quite young." The ATA made an enormous contribution to the war effort by taking over from service pilots the task of ferrying Royal Air Force and Royal Navy warplanes between factories, maintenance units and front-line squadrons.

Joy Lofthouse died yesterday (16 December 2017). A remarkable woman among a generation of remarkable women. God bless her.
That should have been 16 NOVember 2017!
Oh no Chris. I have only just come across this story. I never knew of the lady pilots until now. I suppose at her age it was inevitable that she would pass on. More should be made of these ladies. Their stories out to be made more public.
Chris Carter 😭😭😭😭😭
RIP 😰
RIP Joy..... My most sincere thanks for your service to our country.
"so what you done today grandma?"
"nothing much dear, just been flying a spitfire"

Britain's greatest generation
👍💟💞💝👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
She’s still sharp! She’s spectacular.
Once an airman always an airman...Much respect and admiration,
From this United States Air Force veteran.
"It's like riding a bike......You never forget " Haha
Well done old girl...
Thanks for all your efforts in your youth. My generation appreciate you.
Not everyone
Old glory That generation saved the world in their youth..
What have u done for your country. ..???
The people from this generation are true heros ! We are spoiled, compared to what they had to sacrifice.
D. Naud
Their goal was for you all people to celebrate and live a happy life Monsieur Naud and not complain about the life
D. Naud They "sacrificed" for killing their (and our) very own family & vice versa.
*nationalism is an infantile disease. it is the measles of mankind* - Albert Einstein
Ahmed Abdinur Ahmed Absolutely agree with you !!
I hope future generations will remember these men and woman and what they provided for us. I cannot imagine what went through their minds at that time in history.
D. Naud DUTY is what went through their minds and the Greatest Generation did not disappoint!
Ahmed Abdinur Ahmed Yes agreed in part, Hitler was a monster but the families behind Hitler are very much alive and kicking today whether we talk about the Ford foundation sponsor or the Rockefellers etc.. etc.. These elites are still in power til this day and it's their plan it was never Hitlers plan to begin with he was just about as much of a leader as Obama is today, meaning not their own man.

What an amazing woman.
BRAVA!
You go girl...you can do anything! !
wow
The DEAD has risen....
Hats off to you, ma'am.
Truly amazing to see a member of the world's greatest generation taking to the air once again. How can we ever thank Ms Lofthouse and the veterans of her age for what they did for the world?
I think we can thank them best by never letting a world war happen again, and by working for a better world.
How can we ever thank Ms Lofthouse and the veterans, simple really. Never forget them and always remember what they did for their country.
Eh..... Flying Officer (Ret.) Lofthouse - thank you
Thank them by not always seeking comfort and reframing our current fights (social media culture wars) as the petty squabbles they are and realize that we actually have it quite good
Joy by name and joy by nature. Thankyou ma'am, you've more fire in your belly than todays youth, even at 92..
I salute you.
Gave me goosebumps the thought of her exhilaration being up there in the plane she flew👊
I can still remember when I visited an aviation museum with my granddad and how he broke out in tears when he saw the Bf109, he just went to it, gently stroke the plane and said "Thank you for saving my life"
Much respect for your grandfather man. He may have fought in the wrong side; but he did what a soldier must do.
Sebastian Bach but thats a nazi plane
Meh oh well hes a fighter pilot nonetheless
i cried from reading this.... the situation he must have been in must have been terrifying.
He always wanted to fly and to protect his family, so what could you do as a citizen of the czech rebublik? Watch how the nazis treat the ones they don't like or watch how the soviets are going to "free" your land and no, fleeing was not an option
And yes all of this is based on what my granddad was telling me
Sebastian Bach so your granddad was a Czech nazi pilot?
Lovely lady to fly on the wings of the great Spitfire and of her memories.
RIP Joy lovely lady
A wonderfully modest and lovely person. With the sad news of her passing today, we have lost one of the last links to a past era. I would have loved to have met her to chat about her experiences.
Her family must rightfully be so proud of her achievements.
RIP Joy.
Salute to all the WWII female pilots of the Allied Forces. Great love to you all
These amazing girls from the ATA delivered all sorts of aircraft, including Lancaster bombers, without batting an eye.
So fantastic to see. These women were the quiet achievers during WW2 delivering aircraft to the squadrons..etc..
Classic British beauty...and I'm not talking about the Spitfire. I'm always just affectionately smitten with these young gals during WWII who flew our fighters, bombers, and trainers (WASPs in the US). Makes me wonder how they could have helped being in combat back then, but most were building the aircraft instead of flying them of course. And she was, and still is, a beauty. Oh...and so is that Mk. "The nearest thing to having wings of your own." Spoken as a real stick and rudder pilot who knows what strapping an aircraft on means instead of sitting in the seat of one and pushing it around.
She most likely where in the Auxiliary core to transport planes towards the much needed airstips where the real fight where. Very important job if you think that those planes that where transportining to the front lint helped save Britain in Battle of Britain. Most likely the pilots flying the kites where happy that their kites had some womens toch into this
It's amazing how nobody is rude in the comments, because there is nothing to be rude about. She's just flying her plane again after all those years.
"What's so special about going in a Spitfire?" Are you drunk?! It's a goddamn Spitfire! That's what's so special!
Murder is late term abortion Aye bruh no one gives a fuck what u know about planes. I’m pretty sure they were making a joke.
I'm so grateful for her service in WWII and I'm so happy she had this opportunity. Despite her age she's still mentally as sharp as a razor. And she was really beautiful when she was younger.
Such a wonderful, beautiful moment.. The ATA girls were incredible
92 years old and can still fly this plane! Amazing! I bet it made her feel 18 again! She is a true hero who gave me the freedom i enjoy today! I salute you!
Angel using her wings, Again!
I'm so proud that you got a chance to relive those days! More power to you young lady! 🇺🇲🇬🇧
She is INCREDIBLE for that age!
may God grant her a long life for her service for this country, to see someone of her status, its so happy to see she isnt looking her age.
Her smile ❤
This lady's got her wings rip❤️
She is still very young at heart.. and we thank you for your service. 💯✅
As a former private pilot I definitely feel her joy and excitement. I learned at Bowman Field in Louisville, Kentucky, my plane was a Cessna 172. Oh I miss those experiences.
Joy to watch :D Miss my grandparents.
OC_AirWolf - Me too. Miss my WWII vet grandfather who served under Patton and helped liberate France.
+OC_AirWolf My gradpa survived Pearl Harbor (on the USS Utah).
I flew in a Spitfire a few years ago and I still live it every day.......xx
That's awesome!I come from a long long line of Aviators, both military fighter pilots and commercial pilots it's a deep love they have for it, so letting this awesome young lady fly again is awesome!!
thank you for posting! What an amazing lady, then and now!
For those that want to know; Joy Lofthouse was part of the Air Transport Auxiliary. Her job was to fly aircraft from the factories to the front line Airfields. Only 17 out of 2,000 female applicants who applied for this role were accepted. She hadn't even driven a car before when she first took to the skies. She passed away back in 2017.
Thank you for posting this as Joy has left us. Much respect for her and all who flew in the ATA. She looked very young that day of the flight. God Bless her.
Respect to you lady x
now shes flying spitfires in heaven god bless her.
So great!! I took a 90+ y/o Army Air Corp Colonel (ret) flying in my Piper Arrow. He flew most everything during WW2. He even flew Lindbergh around Germany after the war. He hadn't flown for over 50 years, but it was like "riding a bicycle" for him when I gave him the controls.
Thank you dear lady for your service.
Good for her!! I love seeing her get in the cockpit again.
Thank you ma'am for saving the world. Greatest generation of all time.
My favorite WWII plane. So much respect. RIP
From the other side of the pond i gotta say that was wonderful. Respect
She was pretty hot in the 40's.. gotta say
StratoReloaded - And she still has her mind to this day at 92. What a woman!
Nfarce Totally agree
Perrie she was very beautiful. Sad thing is we all get old and wrinkly. I ain't looking forward to it myself personally lol. But it happens to us all.
And she still has her figure!
The group photo - they were all hotties, all of them.
What a wonderful lady. My mother was in the ATS and stationed on the east coast on anti-aircraft batteries. My father was at Dunkirk and Normandy with the British army. Both have left us now.
immense respect. Thank you for your service.
Really amazing, in 92 to have such a performance!
R I P Great lady
Thank you so much for your service, Joy so this man may live free.
Play Safe From Elliot Lake Ontario Canada.
A lot of respect for these women pilots. They were not allowed to fly combat missions during the war years, but flew transport. They were damn good pilots! You had to be good to fly the spitfire and hawker hurricane.
Inspirational woman May she rest in peace
God bless them....The Greatest Generation!!! Her smile & enthusiasm is priceless!
Every time I watch a veteran doing what they've done once always makes me moved. I still remember my grandfather also piloting transport planes (forgot whether its C-47 or Bristol) for Royal NZAF and USAF in Solomon and Marianas.
Wonderful that this lady veteran got to relive the brave glory of her wartime youth
What a beautiful and uplifting moment!
That was a nice story the BBC brought to us.
Now, I can't believe anyone would give this video any thumbs down! They must people people without a life!!
Germans.
I cannot put into words the respect admiration and apreciation i have for these people. Amazing.
Beautiful Pilot she is!
Goodness how beautiful this woman and her machine I got teary just thinking of her bravery and skill as a pilot. How marvelous she got to have this experience once again. RIP dear.
Absolutely amazing!!!!
bless her heart. I just found this and find she has passed away. So sad. x
What a beautiful plane.
Most amazing legacy for this capture. Thank you for your service, your family will have such an amazing memory of you. Canadian here with relatives in Ypres WWI and British air-fields with B-25's in WWII with my grampa flying stricken bombers back (ferrrying) to and fro. He never rounded the guns in combat, but took some geese to flock off.
Brilliant! The Airforce Womens Auxillary flew all types including bombers to various squadrons, often with only the 'pilot notes' on the aircraft they were flying.
Her gratitude for being able to fly again is so humble.
Awww - How Nice :)
Bless Her Ever More ...
What a beautiful woman, in youth and in age. Thank you for your service Maam.
respect and salute to her and for her service
Made me smile
The stories of the ATA girls is some of the best reading you will ever do.
Fantastic thanks
Wow. She Was so Pretty Back then. My Salute to this Veteran Aviatrxises
RIP Joy.
Amazing. What a girl ! Darlings like her helped enormously to win and bring an awful war to an end. 👏
What an amazing lady. I saw a documentary on the ATA; I think she might have appeared in it too. The ladies who flew these planes were in no way second class as pilots. In many cases, they would have to fly a completely new aircraft after having only an hour or two to familiarize themselves with it beforehand. Very skilled pilots. Others, of course, have echoed her sentiments about the Spitfire. Apparently it was a very responsive aircraft, and the controls were well placed.
What a Legend..! Thanks for this.
Shes a great pilot
I suddenly have tears in my eyes.
These women flew delivery of various aircraft from the factory to where they were needed with only basic training on the aircraft type. They could a Spitfire one day...a Lancaster next day...a Typhoon the day after that and so on. These girls were worth their weight in gold.
Fly with the wings of Angels Joy - thank you for your service.
Very beautiful grandma when she was 20s😍
What joy to see this...
My deepest respect to you mam. Thanks for your service. My snappiest salute!

These lady's who flew these aircraft and all sorts of aircraft during the war, were a special
Breed of people doing
a special job and sometimes in dangerous conditions in all sorts of weather, and in albhrs of day and night, they were respected by the RAF.
