Not “butt cheek”, FACE cheek. Larry broke his face slamming his right cheek onto the floor, during that play. (You just missed it.) He gave himself a concussion, and a fractured face. The team doctor told Larry that he was done playing for the night. Meanwhile, Larry was in the locker room, listening to the announcer call the game, “…the Celtics are missing their leader. Somebody’s got to step it up for Boston. ”Larry sitting there like, “well, the doctor left, and I still got my uniform on. The Pacers are embarrassing us. I ain’t having it! The game’s still going, so so am I.”

As if that true story isn't crazy enough...because of his back injury, the night before that Pacers game he spent the night in the hospital in traction. When the game was over, he went straight to the hospital to get his face xray and spent the night in traction again. Nowadays players are out for 2 weeks with turf toe...he was just different.

1992 Dream Team documentary is a must see. 11 future Hall of Famers. Beautiful basketball like you’ve never seen. Everyone was glued to their TVs for every game. I watch at least once a week. It was a surreal time. If you choose to react to it, even though it’s a little over an hour, it goes fast. Those who reacted to the whole video, were in awe. The only problem with those who broke it up was many of the parts are missing. Larry and Magic were the co-captains. Also, it’s the last time either played. I can guarantee that you’ll love it 🥰

Bird and Magic saved the NBA. Before their debut the NBA was in trouble. Low attendance and poor ratings were tanking the entire league. With their rivalry being the biggest draw and their reputation for "Must see TV" brought it from the brink of total collapse. Without them, the NBA doesn't exist as it does today. It may still have been around but had they not broken the mold and inspired the following generation the NBA would be a shadow of what it is now.

I personally know how painful that is. There is no way I could have played a basketball game with a fractured thumb. I can't front Larry Bird is the reason I became a Celtics fan and I live in Missouri. From his first game to his last Larry was the man. Larry Bird was the best all round player the league had ever know. He was dangerous from anywhere on the court, including behind the backboard. Larry did things routinely the other players could only dream of or have nightmares about. Magic told Larry at his retirement ceremony that he was going to miss playing him because he challenged him in ways no other player could and with his competitive spirit made me the player I became.

You aren't wrong about how few there were in the 80's and 90's who could play today, just because the game is so radically different than it was back then.
    I can think of some.
Bird, Magic, Jordan, Stockton, Wilkins, Barkley, R.Miller, Hakeem Olajawon...these guys could translate to today's game. Now, Wilkins and Barkley might not be great floor spacers or shooters, but the speed, ability to play defense, rebound, they would be able to make the move and they both would have worked hard to improve their parameter game.
Olajawon wouldn't need to change a thing. Yes, he wouldn't be able to floor space and hit dagger 3's...but his game would be so dominant from the mid range on in, he wouldn't need it. Especially with how creative he was.
Bird, Magic, MJ...with the advent of the Tech/Flagrant 1 and Flagrant 2 fouls to cut down on guys like Bill Laimbeer from playing dirty (if you think Draymond Green does it...look up Bill Laimbeer...he was trying to injure people and end careers), advances in medicine and the way they played on top of it, if I were LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving....I would be scared shitless if Bird, Magic and Michael were able to come back in their primes right now.
Michael and Magic made people look slow. Larry Bird made people look stupid.
I often wonder what today's NBA would be like if we could bring back 10-15 Hall of Fame players, in their prime and pair them up against today's talent, how much would it affect the NBA.
I wish Larry Bird had gotten to play the 6-7 more years that he deserved to be able to play.

Bro I have two bird recommendations 1: making the case Larry bird, this one gives you his accomplishments as well as showcasing the guys talent and 2: best trash talk of Larry bird watching real NBA legends tell you how bird was telling them what he's going to do and they couldn't stop him from doing it is crazy

IMO Larry is the best white dude to ever play the game. Factor in skill, trash talk, unbelievable court vision, intimidation factor, shooting and the ability to flat out take over a game. We haven’t seen his like since. Larry and magic are to this day my favorite rivalry. I’m kinda looking forward to see if this wemby-holmgren rivalry can get there

The skill set in the current NBA are very different in the sense that back then it was heavy on strategy and more technically correct play. The players now dominate with size and seemingly much more individual play such as shot making, I'm awed by the athleticism and sheer strength by players now, but I miss the good old days lol.

Loose ball came to him in the corner. Picked it up, shot, Swish. They tossed it back to him Swish. Fifteen straight - years after he retired. Think the team didn't think a little more practice might be good? Lol.

Lebron s career highlights were just Larry day in, day out. They all say he wasn’t really athletic, he’s slow, can’t jump. But would then tell his defenders, where, and how he was going to shoot it. Still couldn’t stop this man. He broke a knuckle in college, he said he never had the same feel for the ball. Part of the reason his back was so bad, was he never hired a gardener for his moms yard, he did it himself. Had he waited three days, the Celtic management told him to just wait and he had a 4.5 million guaranteed contract. He told them he couldn’t do that, he wasn’t able to play at the level, not the Celtics level, his level anymore. That retirement at the garden, there wasn’t a game that Sunday, it sold out.

Many feel that M.J. is the GOAT and I think that one would be hard pressed to argue that. However, the 1 thing that sets 🐦 a head or 2 higher than all others was his court vision. No one in the entire history of the NBA, including the likes of M.J, Magic and Pistol Pete, could read a defense better than 🐦s eye Larry 😉

One thing about basketball I have never understood: What it so impressive about tall athletes dunking? Also, why are so many fans unfamiliar with Bird surprised he could dunk?

Nobody has made more of an impact like Larry bird did in the 13 years he played and
Larry Bird is the GOAT. Not MJ.
And the following is true about Larry Bird.
Larry birds timeframe played 13 seasons in the NBA and what is impressive Larry missed nearly an entire season for bone spurs in his heels and played just 105 games in his last two campaigns
    due to his bad back.
Those last two NBA seasons, 1990-91 and 91-92, were painful to watch, as Bird had to lie on the floor at times to ease the tension on his aching back. Years later, doctors explained the lengths they had to go to just to get Larry Legend
on the court, and after hearing that, you won’t believe just how painful the whole situation was for him. Larry Bird infamously hurt his back doing something perfectly on-brand for the humble Celtics superstar, building a driveway for his mother by himself
in 1985. And while the back injury affected him for the last seven seasons of his career, it truly became a problem starting in 1988.
By the 1990s, Bird “had lost the structural stability of his spine,” according to his orthopedic therapist, Dan Dyrek. “It would slip into abnormal positions to try and lock itself to get an artificial stability.”
The pain for the Celtics star was intense. Dyrek compares his spinal issues to “getting your finger stuck in a door, and somebody’s still pushing on the door.” Despite the pain, Bird did whatever he could to play, even while wondering whether he was doing long-term damage that would affect his quality of life in retirement.
But he did it because, as he learned from his father years before, “If you get paid to go to work, you gotta go to work.” So, during the last two years of Bird’s career, Dyrek and his counterparts would go to extreme measures to get Bird on the court. “What we had to do was unlock his spine, realign it, [and] do techniques that would hold that for four hours, six hours, that type of thing, and then he’d go play basketball,” Dyrek explained. And while Larry Bird now admits he “probably should have retired in ’88, ’89,” he says the competition and hopes of one more NBA Finals showdown with Magic Johnson kept him going.
    www.sportscasting.com/larry-bird-doctors-unlock-spine-before-games-end-career/
and Larry Bird injured his shooting hand in a bar fight during the 1985 Eastern Conference Finals
    www.sportscasting.com/larry-bird-involvement-bar-fight-cost-celtics-1985-nba-finals/
which shows how much heart, love and dedication Larry had for the game. And There will never ever be a player like Larry Bird again. What an insult to Larry bird, His legacy, His accomplishments and the pain he endured and still did all that he did. How a person handles Adversity and other intangibles are part of what makes greatness. And watch these two video's
