Awesome idea here. I'll be making one of these this weekend. I always start by marking an extension cord in the middle with some duct tape, or a zip tie. I wrap from the middle and take up both ends as I'm wrapping so that the cord will wrap twice as quick. When I unwind it, I will unwind from the female and male end together and will be able to unwrap 8 or 10 feet without having to unwrap the whole cord. I'll usually need both ends to be 4 or 6 feet long to plug everything in anyway.

Try plugging the cord ends together then winding from the middle...when you unwind you get twice the length for half the unwinding.
