    Another neat thing about this trilogy is that the protagonists both have a disability. I’ve seen comments about kids with disabilities being thrilled to see a hero like them. As they don’t get a lot of representation as the main character

      The animated series portrays this even better, imo. There are plenty of situations in which Hiccup loses his prosthetic and is literally a one-legged Viking. It's not some disability superpower, it's something that he just gets used to, but it still effects him every day.

    • @happyninja42
      @happyninja42 3 года назад +8

      @@WisteriaDrake I'm curious, in the books, is it just his foot that is lost? Or is it more of his leg? Because the films show it as just being his foot, which, while definitely not good, would be less debilitating than losing a whole leg. I ask simply because you called him a "one legged viking", and at least in the animated stuff, it's just a foot xD

    • @Leafsdude
      @Leafsdude 3 года назад +25

      And it's used as a pretty blatant metaphor for their relationship throughout the series. Particularly, the moment when the symmetry is revealed is the moment where we see everyone come together, and the moment the symmetry is completely removed (Hiccup's leg is gone, while Toothless has a fully functioning prosthetic) is the moment everyone separates for good. And I love that they never try to make it subtle.

      @@happyninja42 Hiccup doesn’t lose his leg in the books, but I _think_ he gets his right side permanently paralysed, so he couldn’t use his arm, which was arguably worse than losing a leg (which is an oof. Poor boy can’t get a break in either universe lol)

      I just think it's a great parallel, because Grimmel IS what Hiccup would've become, if he had killed Toothless in the first movie.
      That's also why nairagar commented "the what ifs", because sometimes it only happens in FanFictions or Spin-Offs which are mostly based on "What if this character had done this instead of this" and that's what this movie is about...

    I love the symbolism of all the big moments, like when Hiccup let go of the Light Fury so she could save Toothless. Hiccup hit the climax of his character arc there - he had to literally, physically, let go of a dragon in order for his best friend to be saved (that sums up his whole arc), and then right after that jettisons his leg (his physical connection with Toothless that was symbolic of their emotional connection) to finally get rid of the bad guy trying to destroy that connection. Hiccup was fully ready to give his life so that his best friend's life could be saved, and that supreme act of love and sacrifice is what motivated the Light Fury to save him. It's stuff like this that makes this trilogy one of my all-time favorite film series, animated or otherwise. Super glad you got to experience it too!

    This is hands-down one of, if not THE best animated trilogy out there. None of the movies were poorly scripted/acted/made, and the story itself stands tall through all three movies. The way it ends was so bittersweet, and different to how I thought it'd go (like many, I thought perhaps they'd all get to live together in the hidden world), but I'm SO happy with how it went, as it ties itself neatly into linking with the real world, where no dragons exist (to our knowledge, at least 😉)

    While the parts of this movie that I broke down to are the same as yours, for me the one that unlocked the floodgates was the line of "There were dragons when I was a boy" spoken right in that final scene with Hiccup, Astrid and their kids on the boat.
    The reason? These movies are based on an incredible 12 book series by Cressida Cowell. At the start of each book that line is written/spoken (I listened to the audio books narrated by the incredible David Tennant and I CANNOT recommend that you listen to them as well because they are simply phenomenal!) While the movies/show obviously diverge in some pretty significant ways, the heart and spirit of the story was maintained with the absolute expertise of Dreamworks. For them to add this line in at the end was so touching and honoring the source material that I broke down more so than any other part of the film (which as you can imagine is saying something!)

It's actually really good, I watched it growing up because I loved the movies... for reference I'm now 17. It takes place between the first and second movie so u get a lot more time to explore all of the characters and even their dragons. If u love how to train your dragon I would definitely recommend watching it. Oh and then watch the movies again... you'll see how much of an impact it has😄

      I'd recommend Gift of the Night Fury instead as it is just way better because you know it actually keeps the characters IN CHARACTER and is more emotional because the story makes sense and so, when the emotional moments play, you really feel them.
      Well as in the HHTYD:HC, I was just mad at how out of character hiccup was and the kids wanting to kill dragons EVEN THOUGH THEY MET TOOTHLESS IN HTTYD:THW .(which this movie is supposed to take place after) Seriously, this movie must have been messed up by Loki because a lot of this movie doesn't work with the timeline.

      @@marveldreamworks5330 It kinda does a little, to be fair. See, HTTYD:HC takes place BEFORE Hiccup and Astrid take their kids to meet the dragons. I do understand the confusion, though as it is never explicitly stated in Homecoming when it takes place.

    I've been checking out all sorts of shows for years, as character or animation studies, mostly. Plenty of them are hit and miss, but this series was something special. Infact, I even introduced it to my grandfather. Ever since the first movie, I've been sending him episodes of the show. Both tonight and last night, after finally finishing the series, we watched the last two movies together. Its been about a month since my grandmother passed, and I'd always kind of hoped that we'd get to sit her down and cap the series off for him, with her.
    While going over the last season, I ended up watching the second movie a bit early on my own... and it was only days before... everything happened. In all honesty, it might have... helped prepare me for what was coming. Having finished the trilogy, I'd hope that it helps my grandfather, in much the same way. This was already one of those _gems_ I intended to collect and show my children one day, but recently, I'd say it became a lot more special than that.

    The poison/vemon works in levels of dosage; too much knocks them out, enough makes them docile. And Toothless is immune to fire and electricity; this was stated in the first movie and was even the title for Night Furies: "The Unholy Offspring of Fire and Lightning Itself".
    Also, its funny you said "come home for Christmas", because there is a short that has them all (sort of) having Viking Christmas together (its really not worth seeing). But there is a sequel short (about 20 minutes long) called HTTYD: Homecoming that's worth seeing; it's really cute.

I figure it might be interesting to note as well, that a really interesting thing about this franchise is them aging up the characters, so those of us that were the perfect age when the first came out, effectively were the same age as the characters for both sequels, very few franchises (specifically animated) do this, so it was a nice touch as well.
