    Hi , I have in my possession a Barbie doll I wish I could show you. Picked up at my church yard sale 10 years ago, she is dressed in a civil war dress. Whoever made the outfit did research and it is beautiful. I’ve never found another hand made like this. As a re-enactor myself, I know what it takes to make a period dress from period patterns.I love this episode, might even try to make another dress for Barbie.🇺🇸

      Like your name, Fritzie. My maiden name is Fritz. Not that that matters lol, I am actually responding to your comment: I started making Barbie clothing again (after a long hiatus) for my 5 year old granddaughter. I have tons of fabric scraps and thought this would be a good way to use them up. The first time I made the clothes (years ago) I didn't love the process, but this time, somehow, I got really hooked on making the clothes and am looking at designing and making period costumes for the Barbie and Ken dolls. Your Civil War Barbie sounds fantastic, that must take a lot of work!!!

    I'm a doll collector (mainly Barbie-type dolls) and restorer/artist, and you're making me want to get back into sewing for my dolls. Back in the day I used to do it a lot, but I just haven't been doing it other than to repair and restore vintage garments. I need to start making some new stuff.

    about 7-8 years ago I made three period outfits for three Barbies so that they'd look like Claire from the first season of Outlander...they had ALL the layers...slip, corset, bumroll, petticoat ,tartan skirt/dress and bodice, also her knitted accessories...even made highland outfits for Ken/Jamie...a lot of tiny hand sewing and drafting from pictures of the costumes..I was very pleased with myself...back in 2020 I did it all again but this time for 24" crochet dolls..all were 1700 styled costumes...wish I could share the pic's here...

    i know a lot of doll makers are starting to use 3-d printing for their dolls. moonlight jewel works with a really talented modeler, and the ladies at enchantarium are really great. hextian uses worbla for a lot of his customs, which has its pros and cons. some modelers also use epoxy sculpt or craft foam for their soles? you could also use a pair of existing shoes that fit as a base?

    How old were you when you started getting into miniatures? Did this interest grow during surgical training since surgeons are trained in a number of stitches in tiny vessels?
    By the way, just curious, have you ever done a “stitch sampler” of all surgical and medical stitches you know and then compare it to a stitch sampler for clothing and sampler for miniature stitching? I would be fascinated to watch a video in that comparison process while you can discuss the purpose behind a variety of stitch designs.

      At that scale, for a doll that won’t sweat or otherwise need to protect her clothes from wear, it absolutely makes sense to omit the lining and that sort of thing, especially when it would make the fabric disproportionately thick if you lined it.

      It’s hard to get fabrics that are 1/5 as thick as usual without it being a completely different type of fabric, so omitting layers, especially linings, is simply necessary.

      Most of the sewing I've been doing lately is for 6 1/2" tall mini American Girls (very small, great for a space-saving collector), which means buttons almost always get replaced by a row of seed beads or embroidered French knots and a concealed piece of thin Velcro. I have yet to find any other closures that wouldn't make the opening far too thick, and even if I did find real buttons small enough it would be a huge hassle to get them through the buttonholes.

    Ever since I was a little girl, and read the story “Hitty, Her First Hundred Years” I have always wanted to make a fashion doll with a trunk of clothes. Not necessarily to play with but just the challenge. Many years ago I did get a little wooden carved all from Jason Townsend and Company and started making an early 1800s outfit for her. You have inspired me to finish her wardrobe. I am so impressed with the work and the care that you put into the little dolls outfitsI can’t wait to see what you do next.

    Love miniatures, this was such a treat :) Evelina looks fabulous!
    One of my favourite artists is Maryna from Poppen Atelier; in addition to repainting dolls, she makes them custom outfits, sometimes with the help of her mother. Some two years ago, she made Marie Antoinette and Elizabeth I dolls.

  • @elizabethwadsworth5167
    @elizabethwadsworth5167 2 года назад +11

    I thought you might like to know that your adventures in miniature sewing last year inspired me to do the same thing. I ended up making an entire 18th century outfit for a Popovy Sisters BJD, with everything completely hand sewn except for the boning channels on the stays. I made a robe a la Francaise, and figuring out how the back works was one of the more difficult sewing projects I've ever taken on. Even though I used pre-embroidered fabric (an upholstery remnant, I think) I'm really happy with the way it came out, and have bought more of the dolls to dress in even more historical outfits.

    This is absolutely INCREDIBLE (and makes me want to get back into customizing my own dolls, both resin and vinyl!) The level of detail is amazing. I definitely don't blame you for leaving out a few layers or taking shortcuts; one of the challenges of miniatures is how you convey the look and feel you want while still making it realistic for yourself. Which of course makes pulling off that magic trick all the more satisfying!

  • @xoraixa2474
    @xoraixa2474 2 года назад +1

    It's gorgeous! I love the detail and the outfit was scaled down beautifully.
    BJDs are what pushed me into sewing for real and I still use them to test out my more hare-brained ideas. It's just so much less scary when 1/9th or less of the fabric is on the line; and it makes hand sewing a bit more tolerable since it's just over so much faster.
    Proper shoes are really hard to find! Looking through tao bao with an agent usually yields the best selection of options. There are people out there that take commissions, too. However shoes are one of those things where there are definitely a lot of short cuts at that scale--the inflexibility of doll feet and the thickness of most leather just makes it hard to work. Soles are easy to sculpt or print with various materials, but the uppers can really do your head in! If you don't mind cheating a little, getting a very basic form fitting shoe and sculpting/sewing over top of it can yield decent results.
    As for companies: if you're looking for more SK makers, iplehouse and supia doll are good to look at! Iplehouse has many sizes and lot of lovely and mature sculpts, but the bodies are heavy and generally not as poseable. Supia is more stylized but has some really neat body engineering for the posing!
    Outside that region, Loong soul is just *chef's kiss* on their body engineering. Gem of doll is also a guilty pleasure of mine because their sculpts can capture that antique doll style really well.

    If it hadn't been for your hands to give scale in some of those shots it would have looked like a human sized gown. The level of detail was amazing!

    When I look at the finished lady (doll) I cannot believe how exquisite it is, the detail is incredible even though I've just watched you make it, twice i might add.

    I was meaning to make some period underthings for my dolls before COVID got the better of me. This might just be the perfect prod to get the project restarted. ❤

    The original outfit is simply gorgeous. You did such a great job translating the overall shapes and details to doll size. That was the most breathtaking embroidery I have ever seen. Please do more doll clothes videos.

    You like dolls and history - so you might enjoy “Hitty - Her First Hundred Years” the life of a doll from the time from her creation in the 1800’s and her travels and adventures as she moves between owners.

    As someone who had a collection of dolls and whose mother has made dresses for them, this is an exciting prospect.

    Such a lovely dress and doll! I'm personally a fan of vinyl BJDs, and I'm working on fantasy historical outfits for them. Nothing as fancy as this, but I'm still learning

    Also, on Deviant Art there is a lady who does BJD historical like clothing, and she has posted patterns for 1/3 scale dolls. I've printed out (trial and error) some things online for my dolls.

    My favorite doll company is Maskcat. I admit to not knowing much about history but their dolls give such a historic/fantasy vibe to them…. Maybe Jane Eyre esque is the best way I know how to describe them. either way, tiny brain wrap up conclusion: doll pretty hehe

    whisperinggrass has made period doll shoes and made some patterns before i believe. depending on the dolls size you could just scale them down. a blog called antique lilac has some really good patterns as well for period clothing under her tutorials section. i have learned that with doll stuff you can generally just scale the pattern up/ down if needed and it works well enough.
