Overview - Completed the MTB smallie slam challenge and it didn't even take 12 hours!
For real though, had an awesome day on the water, got to explore a ton of new water I've never seen before and caught some beautiful bronzebacks! Wet wading creeks for smallies is one of my favorite ways to fish. You get to experience nature up close and even though the smallies usually aren't very big, they are complete tanks and fight like fish 5x their size!
I wasn't sure how the smallmouth slam was going to turn out, based off other youtuber's MTB unboxings this month, I knew there was another version of the box with a big popping frog and a buzzbait. The buzzbait would've been fine but the smallies I was catching today probably would've struggled to inhale the big popping frog. I was super fortunate to receive the box with the drop shot kit, popper, and crawfish imitating baits, everything I received were basically baits I throw for smallies on a regular basis :D
The day started off pretty well, I was getting a lot of bits on the drop shot right off the bat, although they were probably sunfish. The first area I hit didn't produce any bass even though it was the best looking water I fished all day in my opinion.
As soon as I moved a hundred feet downstream from my starting location, I pitched the drop shot to a slow pool around a bend and landed my first fish of the day. The biggest smallmouth I caught this year was less then 8 inches, and I was quickly reminding how much harder river smallies fight when compared to pond/lake largemouth.
Next bait on the list was a BD popper. My last MTB slam I could not get a topwater bite on the z man pop shadZ to save my life, but I knew the conditions today would lend to better topwater action. There was a bottleneck of fast moving current, and right past it was a perfect looking slow pool. I really wanted to fish that spot, so I decided I would cross the river to get to it (anglers will do just about anything to catch a fish right xD).
I found a walking staff for stability, and as soon as I entered the water I realized the current was a lot fast and stronger than it looked. Regardless, I was determined to complete the task at hand, and I slowly but surely made my way inch by inch across the raging current. About 5 minutes into the expedition my legs started to tire and I almost slipped and fell in (my gopro was not in its waterproof casing :P), so I gave-in and abandoned the mission.
No problem, because I simply walked 20 yards downstream from the area and found slower moving water there. My first cast with the popper yielded an awesome blowup and my second fish of the day!

Makes me want to go fishing and keep making RUclips videos!
2:45 -- Redbreast Sunfish (Lepomis auritus), Mike. Lol...
4:45 -- "A River Runs Through it."
7:55 -- Very good observation. When fishing on Creeks, geology and physics actually tell all of us that every Creek around the world has a set of rapids and then a slow pool. Set of rapids and a slow pool. In other words...doesn't matter where you are on planet Earth, you will find a pool at a some point after a set of rapids (p.s. specially if the soil formation is different -- i.e. transition of rocks to sand). And that's where the fish usually hold and feed.
Very nice video, dude. Hah. Of course the crazy crossing was my favorite part. :)
+Extreme Philly Fishing Lol I knew you'd be able to help me out with the sunfish identification xD
that was a redbreast I thought it was a green sunfish

1Rod1ReelFishing i love your vids so much!
Loving the amount of uploads per week keep it up!
Ive said this before in one of your other vids, but I love your enthusiasm, attitude and good clean language when you get excited..some people tend to let out all kinds of swear words...so thanks for that as my son can watch and enjoy....also what do you recommend to wear wading in the cold water that isn't bulky...kinda like a wet suit material.
+mojo jojo thanks for watching, and I appreciate the support! In cold water, you need to wear a neoprene wading suit since its insulated, you'll stay warm and dry throughout the entire wade!
that was a great video I live catching smallies in the river. love your emotion as nd thrill of the catch
+Wesley Hackney thanks for watching bro! I always get a bit too excited when I'm river fishing for smallies for some reason lol

I enjoy watching the mystery tackle box slam. I get the box as well and ur videos help me properly use the baits in the box. A suggestion; you could do slams comparing both the mystery tackle box and lucky tackle box every month...
+Jffares thanks for watching bro, i appreciate the support! Good suggestion too, thats an interesting idea!
that was so awesome thanks for doing one again can't wait for the next one
Living in Florida we have awesome fishing, but I do miss the wading these rivers and creeks for smallmouths and trout like I use to do as a kid up North. Great video man.
+Captain Cocoa Puffs thanks for watching bro! and some of my favorite fishing is wading these little creeks in the wilderness for feisty smallies, but florida has that insane saltwater action so it balances out :P
Hi there I love your videos so much once I went fishing with my dad and we caught a pike but I didn't know how to hold it cause in had teeth so I held it like a bass but then it closed its mouth and it made me bleed
*gives hug*your the first youtuber that replied to my comments thank you😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great Job. You have a crazy amount of subs but you deserve it. I hope to get there.
+Phantom Fishing thanks bro! gl with your channel!
theres nothing more fun than catching smallies caught a 3 1/2 pounder the other day saw him smoke the chatterbait
I love ur mtb slams
LMAO when you tried crossing I thought i was watching a survival show
+MuridHolyBEEP LOL
Great Video Dude & Nice Lures. Keep up the great work. Nick.
Lmao that first fish!
1Rod1ReelFishing the Maryland side of great falls has great fishing too and it's a slightly closer drive. I went a few times last month, caught some big bluegill on accident on a crank bait that was a first, caught a few decent smallmouth as well. The fish seem to be more aggressive in the river systems, I guess because they have to fight strong currents.
U need to do more slams I love watching them
I love those cabin creek bait
Wow jumped 10 subs in just 2 days nice job dude, you deserve it!!
Awesome vid I've been kayaking through that area before super smallie area!

Great video! I completed my slam with the same box! Some good baits. Keep it up man!
Looks like a nice river for steelhead fishing.
Great box and great catch. guess I need to re subscribe to #MTB
Dude I love your vids maybe next time you come to Florida I can fish with you and catch some monsters I know I few spots where theirs 10 pounders
Lol did you make a homemade dropshot sinker with a splitshot? XD
Says he castes lure 4 times, says he tied it a second ago.. Illuminati confirmed
+SlayAllDay Gaming .25 seconds per cast. about average LOL
+SlayAllDay Gaming LOL
Congrats on 60k subs man :)
That species of gill' was a pumpkinseed. I use them as catfish, walleye, and pike bait a lot. The trick to catch them is a size 8 hook, a splitshot (any size) and a bobber. They put up a nice fight!
Not legal to use spiny fish as bait
+Gale Winds not true depends where you are
+Gale Winds not true depends where you are
+Gale Winds not true depends where you are
I would recommend that you hook the dropshot just the normal way- through the nose, out by the back. I think that will decrease the amount of misses you get.
Ahhh smallies..i like them they are good fighters
This time of year smallies just crush craws. The last time I went out everyone in the boat caught a 5 pounder.
this is dedication.
Holy crap I swear to god that I live at the edge of Seneca park! I've been subbed to you for a while and seeing you fish right behind my house is frickin amazing! If you ever come back please please please invite me!
By the way...1Rod1ReelFishing, your Bass abilities are definitely to be awed upon. I don't know if other RUclips Channels have yet challenged you to a 1-on-1 Bass contest, but I certainly do! In remembrance of our good old times, let's make this a friendly competition with no prizes, but only one punishment: the loser needs to chew and eat an entire Trinidad Moruga Scorpion chili pepper. If you are up to it, here are the 4 general rules for the 1-on-1 competition:
(1) The event is to last 6 hours. Time slots are negotiable.
(2) Every Largemouth Bass is to be recorded by a GoPro to be a valid entry. Date and time of the catch should be shown on the footage (i.e. phone screen).
(3) Only lures are to be used. No live or organic bait allowed.
(4) Each fish will be evaluated on an inch-by-inch point system. 1 point for 1 inch. The angler with most points win.
As for the time of the competition, I was thinking Spring of 2016. Just let me know. I am up for it anytime then. Heh. Tight lines, Mike!
+Extreme Philly Fishing Lol like I said in my text I'm down! Just decrease the punishment to something less dangerous like a red savina habanero or a ghost pepper, I don't want to see the loser get killed :P
Holy crap, did this ever happen? I think it's time...
I fish the potomac and catch really great smallies up near brunswick, wavjy worms green pumpkin are my go to. I caught a 15 inch smallmouth on a yamato wacky worm. Great video man you just got another subscriber

great vid as always!! you should do subscriber challenges, like catch a certain type of fish on a few different lures withing a given time. maybe have your subs send you vids/pics of their catches!! I think it would be very fun! good luck in the future and stay fishy :)
+Daniel Cannon thanks for watching! thats an interesting idea, I'll see if I can make it happen in the future!

Do you de barb the trebles? I usually de barb the trebles and keep the barb on singles. (I usually use the barb when fishing with small hooks for big fish.
you should try bow fishing for carp
