MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is a BattleTech mecha game developed by Piranha Games released on December 10, 2019, on Microsoft Windows. It is the first single player MechWarrior game since 2002

Solid rating for a decent game! I have been playing this franchises games for nearly 30 years and this has allot to like. But I will be honest, the story was MEH at best, the expansions have helped with some better mission types and combat updates....but the real strength of this game gets overlooked immensely....the MOD community for this game is INSANE!! I am talking about making it a totally different game. From fixing the AI, to allowing you to set certain combat types for them, to totally unlocking all the space and equipment for the mechs for a franchise that is 36 years old. I have taken a Merc outfit to maximum reputation and 1200 Tons of 'F around and Find Out!!!' at least a half dozen times...and still come back for more when another cool Mod or expansion comes out. Great review, keep them coming!
Bro I downloaded some mods and man I've been in love. The mod community definitely doesnt get the recognition they deserve.
always seemed like the battletech universe gets the best mods. MW4 mekpaks Battletech rougetech and fixing MW5
Mods are gods when it comes to making a good game. No budget can compare to having a bunch of dedicated nerds willing to spend a ridiculous amount of time and effort to expand and refine your game for free.

The spawn in problem is pretty solidly the worst. Especially when they are like “I’ll put this hard hitting tank right behind you!”.
Also the story is a revenge story. Dude killed your dad, so you’re going looking for dude to kill him.

@@ralphsimsgaming I went back and played after they released some of the DLC and I realized it’s possible to miss the story and just wander around doing whatever…it happened to me!

@@ralphsimsgaming one mech you can’t get otherwise(if I remember right) but the story generally isn’t the draw for the mechwarrior/battletech games. It’s a giant robot sim.

I have played this game from day one. Still playing the same game with 7 Atlas mechs, and about 8 other mechs. Love this game.
i fell in love with the game. its really good, and so much fun with friends.
I would say, the BIGGEST downfall for me with Mechwarrior 5 was the lack of story for the main campaign. I also discovered that there were just some things in the game as far as game mechanics goes that just didn't make a whole lot of sense imo (I solved this issue with some of the mods available on NexusMods). And even in "late game" I still kind of find myself getting bored, like the missions themselves aren't bad, but the Environments are kind of lackluster, not that exciting and some can be downright annoying, like spawning in the midst of a city and then trying to navigate the streets without causing too much damage and watching the cities health drop from 100%, 90%, 80% etc., like it doesn't make sense to have that kind of mission in that kind of enviroment and then having to hear the commander of the place you're defending being like "wth bro, you're damaging shit" and I'm like "Well what do you think would happen with a massive ass mech stomping around narrow spaces, shits gunna get destroyed".
I agree 100% with everything you said. I found the missions to get really repetitive after awhile, and most mission scenarios were very lackluster and lacking in story.
This just went on sale 50% off just played it today. I just got off a retro armored core revisiting and this game feels great.

yeah it does get very stale after a while but then I tried a Merctech playthrough then a Reloaded playthrough and now im doing a playthrough of YAML "Yet Another Mech Lab".
YAML has been my favorite so far, Merctech being a very close second.
just having the right amount of immersive, sound and graphical mods really make this game amazing. to bad my internet is too garbage to play with friends lol.
if you get your internet working better bro let me know, im always down for a game or two. the mods give it a whole new feeling and honestly the mod community doesnt get enough credit for what they do

we are supposed to get an internet tower sometime in the future. but for now I have to deal with fluctuating ping and 2 mb DL speed.

Just picked up this game on a whim 3 days ago. I played the tabletop game ages ago, but never made an effort to try out any of the video games. I haven't been able to put it down yet. The games lack of handholding led to me getting my ass kicked badly after i hit rep 3, but once i realized you could hire pilots to run interference for you on missions...the game really took off for me.
Its kind of disappointing that you cant run ANY weapon loadout on all mechs, but it seems that was done to keep things lined up with canon, and to ensure each mech has a solid niche to occupy

@@ralphsimsgaming unfortunately im playing it on xbox atm, so i wont be sampling the mod scene, but if i ever get my pc rig back up and running, i definitely will be checking it out. The idea of getting to run around with some of my favorite clan mechs might just be enough incentive to get my pc finally done 😂

If your on xbox the dlc add some good qol updates but the mechlab is still the weak point. Xbox allows mods and the Xbox one had mods for every game. Would love mod support on consoles for mw5

Genuinely one of my most favorite games within the past few years. I'm definitely not blind to its flaws (of which it has many), but it has a really strong foundation, and boy oh boy, don't get me started on mods. Making this game on unreal is probably the best decision they made. And you're so right -- it's a fun game on its own, but once you have some *human* lancemates? It's fuckin GO TIME. The best part about that, too, is that when it comes to the vanilla game? Seamless crossplay. Playstation, Xbox, PC, no problem, baby! Drop in, drop out, easy as pie. All in all, I've got nearly 500 hours on this game, and looking forward to 500 more!

In my early teens I loved the table top game of battle tech.
Then they bought out various iterations of battletech/mech warrior games, I loved both mech commander which was more like playing the table top and I loved the simulation side of mech warrior.
I completed the story mode, once that's done, it's nice to jump into the instant action sometimes and it actually feels a lot like the combination of the two, it can feel a lot more tacticle than the mech warrior games of the 90's probably because they took quite a risk and didn't do it during or post clan invasion so the mech arnt as high tech as they could be, one thing that these games do miss a little bit off is that the universe is supposed to be in technological decline, so producing and repaying mechs is much harder than it should be...
I think it needs just a touch more of 'Sci-fi mad max with giant stompy robots' and a little less of the future is bright.
Com-star as a faction should pose a serious threat to players as their mechs should be that much more preserved because they have better access to less declined tech....
I definitely want to try the table top games. As far as the sci-fi aspect goes, I feel that this game did a pretty decent job but I do see where you’re coming from though. I’m still fairly new to the genre so I can’t speak on how the other games were just only this one.

I used to play 3rd edition FASA which built off the 1984 rules, it can be a little clunky with book keeping and rules, but you can get very tactile with it.
A quicker experience is alpha strike, you can download a pdf, which is much quicker game play...
Either way though if you get into the lore your descover a very rich universe with a lot of history,
They should make an on going TV show, it'd match game of throne at least.
Try tex talks and the black pants legion they have got hour long lectures about a lot of battle tech history..

Not sure I don't have a lot of money to spend on games atm.
I had it for the psp it was OK but that's my only experience with armoured core, though if its on games pass I'll defiantly give it a whirl!
Also whilst I think of it... There is a 3rd party indie game called mega mek... Which would run on windows as old as XP...
It took 3rd edition battle tech rules (and the art work from the rule. Book) and turned it into a turn based game. It's pretty good to give you the flavour or classic battle tech table top.

With all the dlcs, its a decent game. Kinda repetitive at times, but thats kinda expected of an open ended sandbox-ish game. My fav tactic is going full commando with a really fast mech using my wingmates as distractions.
Try the mods too. They bring some good quality of life to the game.

I rate the game about the same maybe a little higher. The story is where it fell off for me too. Vehicle combat games I always play 3rd person if available (I need to admire the vehicle, and the situational awareness is great), but something like Skyrim is a 1st person thing because otherwise I don't know where I'm hitting. I should get a friend for co-op, because I haven't played that yet (and having to give my lancemates specific mechs because they're not able to use all of them effectively is a chore). Great review!

Ordered it,played it for a day and sold it.For ps5 graphics were bad.Reminded me of playing a ps3 game graphics were so bad.Game play was fun if you can get past playing a ps3 graphics.Titan fall looks way better if you like playing Mech games.It’s and old mech game but still kicks ass.

I like this game a lot more then I expected too honestly. I'm a huge fan of the franchise having played all the tabletop games, though not always the newest versions, all the PC and console games except for the second Mech Assault, and read most of the novels and some of the short story collections, including the short story collection that served as an introduction to many of the characters in the game.
And the time period this game takes place in is my least favorite because its the period where the technological backslide caused by the Sucession Wars is at its worst. (About thirteen years after the story starts an intact pre-Succession Wars computer core is found and the Inner Sphere starts making huge leaps in regaining forgotten knowledge and technology)
My main issue with the game is the limits on customizing your Mech. I don't think adding Jump Jets to a Mech should be as restricted as it is in the game. Make it cost a little extra money and time to refit a Mech with Jump Jets sure but don't forbid it outright. A key reason I dislike this era is until a design released last year there were no official designs in this era that fit the three creteria for my favorite designs without being horribly undergunned for their size. The earliest design in the game that fits those creteria is from 3040. There are several that are close though, and many of those would just require tweaking the design to fit in some Jump Jets which is what I do in the tabletop games, and the earlier PC games set in this period but this game won't let me do it.
I definitely agree about the limitations on customization on the mechs.

Yeah it’s good and a really fun game, but I would wait for a better sale in my opinion. Or go to G2A and see if you can find a ps4 code for lower. Just make sure you look at the seller ratings if you do so you don’t get scammed

So I don’t wanna lie to you. It’s kinda of a yes and no thing. The base game is great and you will have fun, but there is some game changing MODS, but nothing that takes away from the base game
I would have liked to know if they had fixed bugs and technical issues.
i didnt encounter any bugs during my playthrough, it ran really good besides the frame rate drop during the starting cut scene. hope that helps

I run ultra settings, but I do know of a mod that brings some good quality of life updates to the game.

@@rvh1999 there’s a lot, but the ones to look out for are the (“yet another mechlab, yet another equipment, and no tonnage”.) There’s a lot of the “yet another mechlab” so I would just read the descriptions carefully

the only few canon story is when you have "Legend of Kestrel Lance" DLC and if you have't past year 3028, there's an exclusive contract that takes you to Davion-Steiner wedding and they announced to invade Capellan Teritorry.

How are the graphics outdated when it came out in 2019? Rofl...it's not from 1999
2019 still had a lot of good looking titles on the ps4. I believe the year or two after is when the ps5 released, and if you know anything about the ps4 was that it still looked really good, lol let me not even get into the pc side of games 😂

It's weird that a guy who has "sims" in his name played Mechwarrior 5 on a controller, in third person.
If you want a sim experience go cockpit mode and use a HOTAS.

@@ralphsimsgaming absolutely. I use this setup for Elite Dangerous, Mechwarrior 5, MS Flight Sim, and a few other sim games. The pro is much better than the standard X52 due to additional toggles, a better stick spring, and a better screen.

I thought this game was hot garbage. Bad ai, game feels like a money manager simulator instead of a mech combat game, story sucks, missions are all the same and get boring fast. I could keep going but it will turn into a rant.

Debating on getting it on psn for 15 bux..I liked Armored.Core 6 but I found it the mech fast & kinda hard to.control. this seems much more chill & pleasurable
Can’t go wrong with $15. It’s a good game. I haven’t played AC6, but from what I’ve seen, this is a way slower paced game.
@ralphsimsgaming yeah I went ahead & bought it digitally. I like it even tho I had to get used to the pacing & tank style controls. Other than that though, great game. I like the mech customization on it alot more than AC6 actually
