    To those with sleep issues I will relate my experience. After visiting an ENT doctor I was told I had an extremely deviated septum, something millions of people have and don’t even realize. I have probably had mine all my life. Anyway I had simple septoplasty surgery and no longer need breath right strips anymore, can fall asleep on my back, have much deeper sleep and my blood pressure has dropped and is more manageable. Not sure if there is a direct link between bp and septoplasty, but in my case I can breathe and smell as never before. :)

    Hello, Doc. Thanks for the informative video. I’m 68 years and I’ve been diagnosed with hypertension. I’ve been controlling my BP with exercise, weight management and diet. One area of my overall health that I have a difficult time improving is sleep. On nights when my sleep suffers, I notice that my BP is consistently higher the next day. I didn’t realize there was such a strong correlation. I’m trying to integrate more hours of vigorous exercise to help with sleep. Would welcome other thoughts.

      Appreciate your question and thoughts.Physical activity is an important part of safeguarding a good night’s sleep. Exercise helps you fall asleep faster and even helps you stay asleep during the night. Here is a link to a study which discusses how aerobic exercise helps with sleep.www.northwestern.edu/newscenter/stories/2010/09/aerobic-exercise-relieves-insomnia.html. However, would avoid exercise before going to be and rather do it earlier during the day.

    I took a class held by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on meditation. I do it regularly insilence or while listening to music. While hospitalized recently I could lower my blood pressure I demand while hooked up to the machine. while everyone in my family has high blood presure and take medications, I average 120/70. I have been able to go as low as 115/62. I have found however that salt can really raise your numbers to scary levels. I have always been amazed at the idea/theory that everyone MUST have the exact same BP to be healthy regardless of height, weight, age, diet, exercise levels, etc. There must be some underlying reason, what could it be? Maybe getting as many people on BP meds and keeping them on them for as long as possible, regardless whether they help or not. Mostly not.

    I am 41, was quite active, for last years no activity and stressful life, now I've high Cholestrol(321),(height 170cm, weight 83kg) and diagnosed with high BP, jumps around 140/100, doctor prescribed medicine to lower bp, and I am sad about this situation, I am sad about my situation and want to get rid of medicines soon. I am on meds for last 5 days, bp is normalized now, stays below 130/85, I started swimming again(1hour), cycling (1hr) every day, cut down salt , no fat(almost). Question is : Can I try to stop medicine and keep monitoring my BP, and get rid of Meds.... And ofcourse following the suggestion you made in this video?

      Blood pressure typically follows a natural daily pattern known as circadian rhythms, which means it can be higher in the morning (AM) and lower in the evening (PM). This pattern is due to various physiological factors: Morning Surge: Many people experience what's known as the "morning surge" in blood pressure. This is when blood pressure tends to rise in the early morning, often just before waking up. This is partly influenced by the body's natural awakening process and the release of hormones like cortisol. The surge is a response to the body preparing for increased physical activity and alertness during the day. Diurnal Variation: Blood pressure naturally fluctuates throughout the day, with readings being lower during the evening and night while you're at rest. This is considered a diurnal variation and is influenced by the body's sleep-wake cycle and daily activities. Physical Activity and Stress: Daytime activities, such as work, exercise, and stress, can lead to temporary increases in blood pressure. These activities are typically more common during the daytime, contributing to higher blood pressure in the morning and daytime hours. It's important to note that not everyone follows this pattern precisely, as individual variations exist. Some people may have different blood pressure patterns, and certain health conditions or medications can also influence these patterns. Additionally, there can be situations where blood pressure is higher in the evening or at night for some individuals.

They want me to take it again 2 weeks later but haven't brought up medication. 5 days after that visit I'm currently 262lbs but my blood pressure went up a little. Thinking I might have white coat syndrome because every time I'm about to have my pressure taken my heart starts going faster. Been watching what I eat lately as well as moving around (going on 30 minute walks during my lunch breaks and bike rides during 15 minute breaks). Gonna start adding dumbbells to my regimen tomorrow. I think the trickiest thing people need to realize is your BP varies WILDLY day to day, hour by hour. The best way to know what your REAL blood pressure is to take it at home 3 times a day at the same time using a calibrated machine.
    There are so many on unnecessary meds from high readings in the office.
    If I only went by a single reading at the doctor's office, I'd be mislead because my pressure is always sky high at the office due to anxiety about having it tested....but much lower when relaxed at home.

    • @sonyas7422
      @sonyas7422 Год назад

      I agree with you totally. Blood pressure could also be up because of an illness/issue that you're at the doctors office to get resolved. My BP and HR were up yesterday at doctor because I had developed a sun rash due to a side effect from the BP med and probably anxious too to see what my reading was. The day before I felt really good at home and my HR was good. Doctor switched my medication, but I was on the lowest dose anyways so hopeful to get off of it with doing all these on the video list. I just came back from a 15 minute morning walk to start. The medication that had the side effect was Hydrochlorothiazide. I was taking a combo Lisinopril/Hydrochlorothiazide (1/2 dose of 12.5mg pill). Now on 10mg of Lisinopril only.

    Dr John, your videos are so helpful. I wish there were more Drs like you. I have labile hypertension, hyperadrenergic dysautonomia. Yesterday, I had an Abdominal US and have greater than 70% stenosis in the SMA and increased velocity in the IMA. Could this be the cause of my unstable BP? I am on 0.1mg Clonodine patch to try and control it. Benicar stopped working.

    • @ThinkYourHealth
      @ThinkYourHealth  2 года назад +5

      Thank you Mary for your kind words. The majority of cases of chronic mesenteric ischemia ( which just means decreased blood flow in your SMA) are caused by atherosclerotic narrowing of the origins of the celiac or superior mesenteric arteries . In your case it is the latter.Atherosclerosis of the mesenteric vessels is fairly common.The velocity you describe is that the IMA, which is situated inches below the SMA, means your SMA has to "do more work" as less blood is flowing through the SMA.The cause of the SMA stenosis is most likely atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a condition in which fatty deposits called "plaques" build up inside the arteries in the body.Plaques can get too big and reduce blood flow to certain body parts . This can cause symptoms (such as pain) in the part of the body that is not getting enough blood.Yes, indirectly the SMA stenosis is a contributing factor to your high blood pressure, but the MAIN culprit is atherosclerosis.The way is combat this is what I explained in the video using all the different non-pharmacological ways.Like I said it is not easy, but you have to be consistent and persistent.Obviously, as you are on a clonidine it tells me you must have tried other variations& combinations of blood pressure medications.Given that you have hyperadrenergic dysautonomia take time when getting up and sudden movements.Good luck.

      5 years younger than you and bulked up to 195-200 lbs at 6ft in 6 months from 162 lbs (suffered from exercise anorexia since the pandemic started, and was literally living day to day in a caloric deficit). My 130 lb 6 ft doctor said I looked great, but most of my friends and acquaintances thought I had cancer. Looked like an emaciated marathon runner.
      The 6 month bulk did not involve gear or gorging on unhealthy fast food. Still do cardio, via biking, fast walking, running, or swimming but I limit it to 20 to 30 minutes.
      Do all types of free weights in the gym, and it feels good in that aspect, where 135 lbs feels light af on the bench and I can actually rep 185 lbs for at least 7, versus getting pinned by it when I was 162 lbs.
      225 on squats feels light too, and can actually move 265 to 275 for reps now without getting buried like my former 162 lb self would have.
      At the anorexic 162 my BP was no more than 120/70, although I was on 25 mgs of hydrochlorothyazide since 2018, when my prick emaciated doctor insinuated my BMI was a little high at 184 lbs. Lost the weight over a three year period and shriveled up like a prune going the route of Karen Carpenter. Hated the sight of food and ate like a bird. Probably weight even went under 160 for all I know (no reference to that depressing af Carpenters song)
      Present Time: BP gets into hypertension range 140/90 or higher, at least when I checked it last week at the Doctor, who I now no longer will go to.
      Thinking maybe he rigged the machine or I was anxious, I took it at one of those Walmart machines and it was about the same (3rd try 131/89)
      Take it at home with the wrist cuff, and it goes all over the place, and I am in now in disbelief when it is 128/78, because I now think it is supposed to be higher. Get those headaches that emanate from the neck too.
      Not sure what to do either. Maybe up the dose of the diuretic to 50 to 100 mgs possibly? Combine it with an ACE Inhibitor?
      Drop BW and eat like a bird?? Or just live life with HBP and enjoy life finally, with the understanding that I cannot live forever and my BP will be an eventual healthy 0/0??
      Fortunately, I can accept HBP at a more mature age versus being someone in their 20s.
      Ef, back in the 80s I was normal with a 140/90 BP, but we all know what was behind the lowering of that threshold.
      My advice would be to get another opinion or take the BP less often. For me taking the BP less often in the past resulted in lower readings.
      I would probably avoid most protein powders, especially the plant based, because they more than likely have a high hidden sodium content.
      I would say look for a less stressful job, but that in itself sucks, and my job is Uber stressful too (no I do not drive for the company of the same name), lots of computer time at my work. Besides nobody is chomping at the bit to hire a 56 year old boomer right before the holidays in a languid November 2023 economy. As I am going to do, I am going to research the side effects of that ACE inhibitor and see if it is worth it.
      Be well sir, and you are hardly alone. My brother had a 240/130 reading, so for me, there are some genetic factors for me.
      Easier said than done, but don’t sweat it too much.
