I love how you come up with so many different angles to these lists. It really shows your passion for the genre (if the shelf behind you wasn’t clue enough!) I must have discovered most of my faves games through this channel. Thank you. 😄 great vid Erick 👌🏻👏🏻
The reason Golden Axe Warrior didn't come out in Japan was quite simply that Sega of Japan abandoned the Master System/Mark III as soon as the Mega Drive came out in 1988. There were only 2 Master System releases that trickled out there in the months after the Mega Drive launch. But SoJ kept developing Master System titles for overseas markets, so a ton of Japanese developed games like Sonic came out in the West but not in their home territory. After the Master System died in North America in 1991, SoJ's Game Gear development effectively doubled as Master System development (the hardware was identical aside from resolution & number of colours), as the Master System had caught on late in PAL territories & would do quite well there for a couple of years.
P5 is definitely a PS3 game that was ported to the PS4 because of how late it's release was it certainly wasn't designed from the ground up for the PS4.
The 3DS entry will have to be changed, since Fragrant Story is coming out on it still (and 2 more titles apparently coming out which could possibly be rpgs)
It was also the last game released on a physical cartridge on the super famicom (metal slader glory was released later, but only on nintendo power flash cartridges)
Love your Videos Cesar, I really enjoy watching your content and your take on my all time favorite genre of Video games; RPG's. Keep up the amazing work!!!
Refreshing to watch a RUclips channel that is pure. Liked and subbed. Roughly guessing your Spanish and your English is great and I enjoy your voice and accent. Your who I go to for jrpg games and advice, I wish you all the best for RUclips and your future and lastly muchas gracias
Since Magic Knight Rayearth was also the very last Sega Saturn game in North America...has anyone noticed that Sega had absolutely zero presence for almost an entire year between Magic Knight Rayearth and the release of the Dreamcast? Magic Knight Rayearth November 30,1998 Sega Dreamcast September 9,1999
I think they were just more committed to the Dreamcast by the end of '98, nothing else mattered. They wanted to try and have a strong launch lineup. I can't say that I blame them, as they were on life-support by then. And, yes, there were Saturn games still being released in Japan through '99. But it saw greater success (relatively speaking) over there.
If you ever get around to playing it again. Zophar final boss. The 5 turns before Lucia heals you and 'the real battle begins', go ALL OUT CRAZY on the two hands you can target and damage. If you kill them in time, they don't carry over to after Lucia heals and make the battle MUCH easier.
Dragon Warrior I & II, Monsters, and Monsters 2, plus Pokémon Gold & Silver, and Pokémon Trading Card Game all came out after Pokémon Yellow for Game Boy. They’re dual compatible Color games.
I always thought that Trails in the Sky SC was the last PSP JRPG released in the West. That would have been a more fitting swansong for such a JRPG powerhouse. Also, FF6 should have been released on DS, which was already 3 years old at the time. That would have mitigated just about every issue with the GBA remaster and would have easily been the definitive version.
Well Square Enix already planned their series Finest Fantasy for Advance years before Final Fantasy VI Advance came out...the kicker is all three came out after the DS came out.
Because it was already planned. why stop development for the gba version when the ds is backwards compatible. You get the large install base of both consoles
Ok so Pokémon B2W2 is not an "expansion" like Pokémon Emerald It's literally a sequel with a whole different Jorney that also adds some old Pokémons do complete the classic PokeDex. Gamewhise it's great (one of the most underrated pkmn games IMO)
You forgot the TurboGrafx CD, last released JRPG was Dungeon Explorer II, released in 1993 (March I think). Most RPGs were released on TurboCD rather than TurboGrafx16 for space reasons, though Neutopia II might count on the TurboGrafx 16 itself (Zelda clone, released in 1992). You should really check out the platform, besides those two there's two Y's games, Cosmic Fantasy 2, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes (yes, the start of that franchise) and a couple of good dungeon crawls too, and that's before you get into the translations.
He overlooked even more than that. There's other games/systems he skipped like Lucienne's Quest on 3do; Samurai Showdown RPG on Neo Geo CD,; the CDI Zelda stuff, etc. I'm not sure if Zelda games/clones technically count as JRPGs, but since he already opened that can of worms by acknowledging Golden Axe Warrior as the last Master System JRPG, I'd say they count.
1 more REALLY obscure one. He did say at the start of the video he was going by North American release dates. Well the Commodore Amiga CD32 console never made it to the US but it did come out in North America (Canada) and did get its very own Zelda clone: Speris Legacy in 1996. And since Zelda clones do count as JRPGs...
I'm surprised at how many of these I have, especially considering how long it's been since JRPGs were a huge part of my play time. At some point I should open up my copy of Sakura Wars on PS2 and give it a play. I used to screw around with the originals on Saturn and Dreamcast in Japanese (that I can't read), so it might be nice to be able to make proper headway. The older consoles don't surprise me. 8 and 16 bit days were my RPG heyday, and I kept buying them through the 32 bit days, not quite yet ready to admit that my tastes were reverting back to more arcade-style stuff. I never sell ghem, though, because every so often, I still get that itch and enjoy one.
I always considered JRPGs my favorite genre but I don’t know how you know of so many damn titles. Every video you upload I swear I learn about more. That being said, have you ever played Albert Odyssey? I haven’t but I’m interested in seeing some playthroughs if you’re either interested or can steer me in the right direction. Thanks! Awesome content, bro!
similar to that Golden Axe spin-off, Nintendo's StarTropics games never saw release in Japan despite being developed in house by one of the R&D teams....and even stranger, Japan also never got Pokemon Puzzle League for N64 ( though frankly that seems fair seeing as the actual original Panel De Pon for SNES never got localized...nice that we can experience it through NSO now though )

While PQ2 is the last 3DS JRPG out in North America, it's a shame Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 never came out in the West as it would have been the ACTUAL last 3DS JRPG there. Plans for bringing it in the West were scrapped due to the commercial failure of the first EMD over there so it made sense they wouldn't risk another commercial failure despite the decent reviews the Japanese version got.
Cmon Erick, no Cd-i, 3DO, Turbografx 16, Turbografx CD, Jaguar (wait did Jaguar have any JRPGs?) haha I'm just messing around, thats really fringe stuff. This is a great list and it looks like this took some time to compile as well. Thanks man!
TG16 and TGCD had JRPGs, and I believe 3DO, as they had a presence in Japan (TurboGrafx was the PC Engine). Not sure about CD-i, though. Would love for him to show some love to systems not put out by Sony or Nintendo. There's a lot of good stuff out there. Sadly, though, we here in North America didn't get much of it.
Lunar was always one of my favorites I remember buying the sega cd and both lunar games from toys r us right when the system and the games were about to go out of print
I wonder what the last physical JRPG releases were for the Vita and Switch??? For Vita, I know Penny-Punching Princess, The Lost Child, and The Longest 5 Minutes came out as maybe the last wide-releases. But then there was a steady trickle of physical JRPGs coming out from Limited Run and a few other outlets.
I think people are hard on Kemco. Their games seem to be made with mobile market in mind and when it comes to mobile games theirs seem way better the rest of the stuff out there. I only played part of one of their games many years ago on my phone before it broke and it was actually quite fun (Especially since it was a real game and not your average F2P, whale hunting, jpg collector. It was a rude awakening back then when I realized that all the cool looking mobile games I wanted to play were barely games at all.)
Great games, but hard to focus with that P5 soundtrack playing. P5 it's a masterpiece in all areas, I absolutely love the ost, specially "Beneath the Mask", great video.
I have the PS4 version of Wizards of Brandel, but wasn't able to get into it. I've found that there really is no middle ground for me and Kemco. Several of theirs I really enjoyed, and others I can't get an hour into it. Overall, I've beaten nine of them. I find them to be a really nice palate cleanser after I finished a JRPG that was a slog to get through. Agree with Erick on Revenant Saga. It also has a sequel, Revenant Dogma, which has possibly one of the darkest storyline I've ever seen in a JRPG. I loved Fernz Gate and Miden Tower, easily my favorites out of any of them. Miden Tower is also really dark, and I have a feeling that if it had a different graphical style, it would've been M rated. Both the main character and one of the villains are just constantly murdering knights throughout the game. When the game starts, that's all he wants to do, just kill knights.
I love FFVI on the GBA, but worse than a scene being changed for censorship is that the music quality had to be really compromised because the sound chip on the GBA wasn't as good as the SNES.
In that case would emulation, whether on a dedicated pocket emulation device like an RP2 or on a jailbroken Vita, restore good sound? Or are we doomed to just never have a perfect version of the game? (I'd pay full price for a remake using Octopath Traveler's engine, btw. Just in case they're reading.)
My favorite game on this list (that I played) is Lunar eternal blue on the sega CD. I actually prefer that version to the ps1 remake. Thanks for the great video.
Terranigma. What an excellent Swan song for the snes. Admittedly it never got a us release but considering we never got ff3 (6) or chrono trigger till the ps1 re release I think the US got the better deal
Ahh Baten Kaitos Origins, one of my favorite Gamecube games. A number of things make it superior to the first one in my book, including an ATB system so the gameplay was faster, a single deck so it's easier to manage, an actual discard function so you're not wasting turns purposefully using cards to get rid of them, and better voice acting. As for Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, the game is way better with another person. Me and a friend are playing through it together currently and enjoying it way better than when we were solo.
I'm not sure if Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 had the same kind of story to it in terms of fan reception, but I know that originally, the first Black and White games weren't very well received. It was only later on that people actually started enjoying them and, if I recall, a lot even consider them the best Pokemon games yet even today. I also don't know if the sequels have anything to do with that success, however. As for Digimon World 4, I don't think the controls were bad at all. In fact, it wasn't in itself a bad game, in my opinion. It just wasn't great by any means. The fact that enemies can block your attacks without warning very frequently was a pain and a half, I don't like the fact that if I recall, enemies can damage you just by running into you, and I really wish there was a combo system in it. More weapons and playable base-form characters also might be pretty nice.
Sakura Wars V So Long My Love is still only one game from original five games (six if we count PS2 remake of first game) we got in West, and with English Dubbing (the PS4 reboot have only ENG subbtitles). This game is so rare now, and so expensive (150$ + for English version), that desperately need a remaster or port to modern systems.
If you haven’t already you should check out Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets on Game boy color! It was a really solid RPG released in 2002! It was developed in the west but has a lot of final fantasy influences in it
I would argue that 2010's Pier Solar and the Great Architects was the last JRPG for the Sega Genesis, though it might not qualify for the list, depending on your definitions of "JRPG" (I don't think it was developed in Japan) and "released" (it was a homebrew game released long after the Genesis/Mega Drive had ceased to be a viable system). It looks like it had a Dreamcast port released in 2015, so I guess it would be the last JRPG on that system as well.
Actually Fire Emblem V: Thracia 776 was released 1999 in Japan for the SNES, so that is the last JRPG ever released on that console. But, in the west... Not quite, eh? :)

yeah and it got delayed just so ATLUS could make a PS4 version as well kinda like how Nintendo delayed Zelda Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild when they were originally developped for the GameCube and WiiU respectively in order to release them on their hot new consoles (the Wii and the Switch respectively)
Hmmm. A new list: "JRPGs ported to PC/Steam/GOG". That would be neat. The list is ever-growing and it's nice to let people out there know which of their cherished classics have been ported and how good said ports are, and if there are mods to improve them further. Such a list would be quite useful to some people who are looking for ways to get all of their favorite games on PC without having to mess around with obsolete hardware, or trying to find ways to emulate old machines. I know at least the PS1 and PS2 were infamous for having very cheap hardware (mainly the ODD and its cheap plastic rails that would wear out) while most of the 4:3 consoles look terrible on modern widescreen TVs and CRTs are getting harder to find, and you pretty much need a SCART->HDMI adapter and SCART cables for all of those old systems and.... eugh. It's better to just play them on PC.
A pc list would be redundant as nearly every jrpg released for consoles over the past decade (as well as a few older ones) are also released for pc and from before j developers put their games on pc, there's emulators (why I don't feel the need to ever get a playstation). Some of the ports are shit(looking at you square enix) but there is an active fan community that create patches.
The trouble with Kemco is all their JRPGs look straight out of RPGmaker even with alterations to game mechanics. Runefactory is may be farming sim but has rpg elements. I recently playing RF4 and looking forward to RF5 when finally released for West. I still want to play Lunar 2 and hope there will be port on Switch for Breath of Fire 4. I mainly play Final fantasy series on PS2.
I'm just gonna express my anger that Final Fantasy Type-0 wasn't on your list for PSP. It is hands-down the best PSP RPG game, and also the last RPG game (and possibly THE last game) made on the PSP... And they skipped a NA release of it so they could sell the HD remaster on PS4 to push up sales of that console. Thankfully a 100% fan-translation exists for the PSP version, and was even released before the PS4 version was announced (by a few days, but still, lol).
It wasn't on his list because it wasn't released in NA on the psp. Since his entire list is of the last jrpgs to release on these systems outside of Japan.
I play persona 5 in the ps3 and I was mad when thay realease the royales just gor the ps4. I felt like they were telling me "What? you thing that was something well watch this" *Cries in ps3* But anyway I still loce the game
Even on the Digimon fandom World 4 isn't considered a good game, which is a shame since the X-Digimon were an aweasome part of the Digimon lore back in the day, and actually led to the very best Digimon movie... Which we didn't got officially outside of Japan literally until the last year. Is very weird Bandai Namco decided to localize this game given the criticism, the somewhat poor sales of World 2 and 3, and the fact that north America didn't received any kind of lore of the X Digimons.
I was a huge fan of Digimon and played the heck out of world 1,2 and 3 unfortunately 4 was so bad I tried my best to like it but the games was just bad, so sad that Digimon games kinda died on ps1,
@@alenezi989a3 ... But they revived on PSP. I hadn't had the chance to play them, but I've heard World ReDigitize (and the DeCode version for 3ds which is actually a huge expansion pack making the PSP one obsolete) is probably the best digimon world game with 1's formula, and I've heard Adventure for PSP is good. Now, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, both the original and Hacker's Memory, are masterpieces to me.
@@thomario8639 did the psp ones ever come to the west? Or had an English release? Never heard of these games, I agree on cyber sleuth being a masterpiece but not hacker's memory it was more like a cheap cash grab to me I didn't enjoy playing it at all.
@@alenezi989a3 ... Well, nope. But they have English patches. The English patch for Digimon World Re Digitize Decode actually came only a few months ago. Also, apparently Digimon Adventure PSP's story is almost the same as the anime, so if you've watched the anime, then I think you'll be better trying it for the gameplay.
I know one was an Shin Megami Tensei: Nine. I had no idea there was an SMT game on the OG XBOX until I randomly came across it in a mom and pop game store.
Is Sakura Wars really a JRPG? There's no item management, character don't really have levels per say. Its a dating sim/strategy game IMO. Love the series to bits but wouldn't really call it an RPG.
I wonder if Baten Kaitos Origins alienated fans of the series. I mean the title of the game wasn't utterly absurd! Call me cynical but Digimon World 4 looks like they took a completely unrelated game and reskinned it with Digimon... Why is Agumon using an axe?!?
I'll never forget that p5 was a ps3 game. It's what allowed me to play it
Same

The novelty of Pokemon B&W 2 is that Pokemon from different generations were available right from the start, which made rabid fan pretty happy.
...And that it was the first direct sequel in the series (continued the story from B&W 1).
The reason Golden Axe Warrior didn't come out in Japan was quite simply that Sega of Japan abandoned the Master System/Mark III as soon as the Mega Drive came out in 1988.
@Daniel Long I'd rather have the better translation and just listen to the soundtrack separately.
I played the PS3 version of Persona 5 and the game runs smooth like the game.
It was developed in the west but has a lot of final fantasy influences in it
Dood Lufia 2 was crazy good i totally agree. I always rank that game with chrono trigger and ff6. Crazy I know but it was really memorable
Pls do last japan only jrpg on each console
I love the Sega CD 😢
I noticed Earthbound for SNES wasn’t on this list. Was it not a JRPG? Such a great game!
that popful mail OST slaps
Anyone knows the song that starts at 4:23?
I am pretty sure that's the town theme in Brainlord. Look it up.

I love Q2 for the inclusion of P3P's FeMC.
Dragon Warrior/Quest IV is my favorite of the Dragon Quest series.
🙂 it's no surprise that the ps3 got persona 5 it was originally announced for the ps3
yeah and it got delayed just so ATLUS could make a PS4 version as well
kinda like how Nintendo delayed Zelda Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild when they were originally developped for the GameCube and WiiU respectively in order to release them on their hot new consoles (the Wii and the Switch respectively)
@@martinde-serres8724 wow. I didn't know that.
@@bustergundo516 how didn't you not know? there were articles all over the web back then, you couldn't have missed it lol
@@martinde-serres8724 i was busy with other games lol. I didn't pay a lot for it though. 11.50 with tax and free shipping.
Blacl and white 2 are the best pokemon games in the series
Awesome video
What was the last hand pictures in the opening?
Great video
I just got my Persona Q2. Did you?
Is there any great Kemco rpg?
Nice Video Erick, Didnt know about Wizards of Brandel on Vita, Looked for it but cant find it, is it only a digital game?
Yeah
Is that a tune from Brainlord playing?
I play persona 5 in the ps3 and I was mad when thay realease the royales just gor the ps4. I felt like they were telling me "What? you thing that was something well watch this" *Cries in ps3*
But anyway I still loce the game
I actually bought p5 on ps3. I didn't buy it on ps4 until last year.
why would agumon have an axe?
You're not counting shenmue 2 for dreamcast?
“There’s only 3 JRPGs released on the original Xbox,” what were the other 2?
I know one was an Shin Megami Tensei: Nine. I had no idea there was an SMT game on the OG XBOX until I randomly came across it in a mom and pop game store.
Oh wait that was Japan only never mind no wonder I only saw it once.
Agree with MKR being meh. Honestly I hardly consider an rpg, and more an "action/adventure with rpg elements". But that is just an opinion.
Intro song name?
#justacommentofappreciation
Huh, I thought the last jrpg on the Vita was Utawarerumono... Or maybe I got the genre wrong?
You are actually correct.
idk it seems more of a visual novel with strategy elements. can it be considered an rpg?
Cool
Ahr yes... Paper Mario 64... The only good n64 JRPG 😎
I will defend dark souls 2 till the end!!! But cool video though.
NEO-GEO didn't get any JRPGs?
I'm a Souls fan but even I agree that Scholar of the First Sin is a miserable experience. I had some fun online at least...
IDK man I had lots of fun with SotFS but I was playing that on PS4. I think it was the DLC areas I liked the best.
Interesting XD
Is Sakura Wars really a JRPG? There's no item management, character don't really have levels per say. Its a dating sim/strategy game IMO. Love the series to bits but wouldn't really call it an RPG.
Ig it’s a rpg cuz u role play . Honesty it seems like a more interactive VN but nobody claims it as that
@@fredbrown7582 I presume you are being sarcastic because the joke is that practically every game is an RPG when you use that definition.
It is Dramatic Adventure game, basically playable anime. Sakura Wars is precursor of Dating Sim games mixed with other genres.
I love my KEMCO GAMES, LMAO
Definitely a guilty pleasure, even though we secretly know they're kinda shit 😂
Yeah they are nothing to write home about, but they are certainly enjoyable in a way.
👍
Luna!!!!!
I wonder if Baten Kaitos Origins alienated fans of the series. I mean the title of the game wasn't utterly absurd!
Call me cynical but Digimon World 4 looks like they took a completely unrelated game and reskinned it with Digimon...
Why is Agumon using an axe?!?
yay rp jjeeee
