Before we knew who the teacher even was that got the shooter & the gun. My daughter said, "I bet it was Mrs. Gneiting who did it! She just has this attitude & personality that I bet it was her!" I was shocked to find out it was really her that saved the day in so many ways! Your students past & present love you, Mrs. Gneiting. What an amazing person/woman/teacher. Everything she said was exactly on point. She understood, she disarmed because she was able to (not everyone is able to), she helped and saved so many lives.

I know what you mean. But I don't necessarily think that not reporting on every single school shooting is necessarily a bad idea. In my country we don't really have a widespread school/mass shooting problem. But when things like this happen (or, in our country more likely: When people commit suicide by jumping in front of a train) it doesn't necessarily make the news - especially not on national level - because the people are aware that it can inadvertently basically "give people ideas" and lead to others imitating the action. Interestingly this is something that has been observed and kind of handled in this way even as far back as in the 18th century: A famous poet wrote a book about a suffering adolescent who eventually took his own life. After the book was first published (remember: books are amongst the earliest forms of mass media) there was literally a surge in suicide among young people who identified with the struggles of the story's main character. That lead to this book being banned from being sold for a period of time and the suicide rate dropped again. I can imagine that for some of these school shooters, who may or may not feel extremely desperate and neglected/forgotten etc., they might (1) have gotten their idea to do it from hearing about this on the news all the time and (2) part of their motivation to do it might be to be "seen" at least once in their life. In any case it is pretty obvious that through all spheres of society the USA definitely is in need of healing and needing access to mental health care and healthier ways to deal with the pain and suffering and anxiety etc.

She may have loving parents who just missed the signs or garbage parents that couldn't be bothered. well, it is a good ending, however not every school shooter is a grade 6 girl. the situation is sad. there too much unnecessary stress on the lives of ordinary people. the impressionable need to disconnect themselves from the devices they are exposed to.

As disturbing as the kids of that age and younger, actively involved in gang violence and shootings. It may not be as common in middle class America (what’s left of it), but in urban America, children are perpetrators of violent crime at an alarming rate, like the 11 year old carjacker just a few days ago in Chicago.

They don't help others, they dont try new things. they just find somewhere to hide... and sit there, hiding. won't even draw a doodle... nope. can't dare to be seen making a mistake, it will ruin their reputation! as if they have one, sitting there on their phone. I also know a lot of adults that even fall to the floor, clutching their chests, physically diseased by fear! What are they afraid of? With the pandemic and all the school shooting incidents in this country, we can all unequivocally say that TOO MUCH is asked of our teachers. And yet they continue to be underpaid and underappreciated.
We defund schools and education every year, while the police and jails get more and more funding to put people in them. We got rid of mental health facilities, and started putting children on Adderall which is meth light, change needs to happen if we want this to stop. We want to deify the person who stopped the situation, which she should be commended, but also do nothing to ensure this doesn't happen again.

How can we be effective if we have to do so at arms length? I see heartbreaking situations swallow kids whole every day yet am rendered powerless to intervene by the same administration that holds me accountable for a multitude of elements that are either purposely beyond my control due to fear of liability on the part of the school district, or I am simply not equipped to handle because I lack the training and authority. Changes must be made. So many that it’s overwhelming to try to even know where to start. All I can do each day is model for my students how we should treat one another with respect and compassion. It’s far harder than it sounds- most days I can’t even manage to get them to stop talking and pay attention. Many of them don’t even know what that means.

The problem in my opinion is the degradation in the quality of parenting and the home environment in the last few decades, which has harmed children's strength, resiliency, and ability to socialize with others. The fact our society allows us to wield firearms is something that will likely never be changed, at least not for several more decades if ever. I think we should focus our attention on the problems which we CAN fix, which is child development, parenting, and the home environment, rather than trying to further restrict guns, which I don't really see as a way of actually stopping the crimes from happening. We can't have our cake and eat it too, it's tragic but i suppose its better we try to do something actionable and less idealistic. In other countries, things like mass stabbing occur, which are obviously less fatal, but it almost seems like its begging us to address the problem of the unsocialized, depressed individual with nothing to lose, who is then an extreme danger to others.

Middle school is a crucial time for kids. The transition from being little kids to adolescence with puberty and hormone changes it does have a huge impact on kids and their behaviors. Don't really know this young girl's story but it can also maybe be problems at home. We don't really know, but I pray that she gets the help that she needs and the teacher deserves an award and lots of recognition for her bravery and compassion.

I’m graduating 6th grade on June 10, this is crazy. I couldn’t imagine one of my friends and classmates opening fire at my school. That teacher is an angel, she didn’t yell at the girl, she talked calmly and comforted her.

Some kids just don't open up about their day, even when asked, public school is hard and it never gets easier, it's unfortunate, she is a young teenager and it's very hard to tell what emotions were going through her head kids at that age or any age to be honest are not nice

Love your children openly. Pay attention to them. Tell them. Talk to them. It doesn't necessarily have to be about themselves.
I wonder if the parents even have the TIME to keep track of her. Work consumes more and more of everyone's time and energy, to the point where children are best viewed as luxury items in this day and age. Parents are exhausted, resources are scarce, more and more is demanded of everyone....and then BOOM. Something like this happens. And then we pause for about 15 minutes before starting it all over again.
As someone who struggled so hard with mental health in school, this teacher is not just a hero, she’s an Angel on earth. She saved that little girl. She gave love when others would give hate. I live in Idaho and Rigby has a HUGE bullying issue that never gets addressed. Its one of southeast Idaho's worst schools. I'm positive bullying played a role.

I cannot imagine a better teacher. She was truly there at the right time. My son is 11 and will be starting 6th grade in August and it breaks my to think a child this age could be hurting so bad to think this is the way to go. It's not that. Kids 6-9th grade are still developing critical thinking skills. They are also going through puberty. If, at the same time, something that seems traumatic to THEM happens, thus can happen. They don't think of the after of the situation often times. The ones who do are usually the ones who make cops shoot them, kill them, or they kill themselves. I'm a former 7th grade teacher....I've had to talk kids down...not from guns, but my goodness they can make astoundingly bad decisions and you give them something else they could have done and they look astounded.....if I hadn't suffered a back injury, I'd still be teaching.....

Why is it that American kids go through breakdowns and immediately think taking someone’s life or shooting a bunch of kids essentially traumatizing an entire school is going to make them feel better. What’s that about? I hope she gets help but honestly I feel far more for the people that got shot and the other students there who might now have to deal with ptsd and all of that because of her actions. I also hope she gets all the help she needs but she also needs to get all the consequences some time in juvenile detention and a good therapist so she can learn hurting others can’t help her. Dina Salysa, it is far more common for struggling kids to commit suicide rather than homicide or some combination of the two. I don't know if it makes them feel better. Oftentimes, the shooter dies in the process, so it's tough to say. I agree though, that the girl in this story needs help, but shouldn't necessarily reintegrate into society. It is possible to feel compassion for someone and at the same time, recognize that the rest of society needs to be protected.
Kids that have mental breakdowns don't IMMEDIATELY think of taking someone's else's life, much less their own. It's a violent spiral into a terrible mindset and rationale isn't exactly the first thing present when people are in pain. More often than not, those violent thoughts are internalized into suicide, but homicide isn't a decision they make with rationality. She wasn't dead set on doing it either.

Im glad that no one was killed. Reminds me a lot of the shooting in 2019 where a coach also disarmed and hugged a shooter. Still, that girl's childhood is pretty much over. For comparison, the 2019 shooter received three years probation in a mental health facility. However, that case differs greatly from this one. He only had one shell in the gun and it was clear he intended only to hurt himself and not others. This girl shot three people and traumatized hundreds of her classmates for the rest of their lives. She's extremely lucky no one died. Still, she's likely facing three charges of attempted murder at the very least. So at the very least, she'l be sentenced to a juvenile facility until she turns 18.
At the least, she deserves juvenile prison until she’s 17. Then jail till she’s 27, you don’t get away with something because you’re a little girl and everyone feels bad for you. Well I shouldn’t say you don’t, because you pretty much do.

Yes and teachers have been protecting their kids when shootings have happened. Thats why we do lockdowns in schools. Its easier said than done when you are in a situation as such. We need actual armed security officers in schools and metal detectors. Some schools have them here in NYC but its usually the HS and depending on the city.

What about the custodian/janitor who also stepped in and protected some of the kids? They didn't get shot but still intervened. .Everyone no matter how small a role needs to be recognized.
So sad. The emotional turmoil our children are in these days is disturbing. Kids feel unloved, unwanted, bullied, or worthless and they do these things trying to feel something. It’s heart breaking.
This could have ended much more tragically. Gneiting is insanely courageous, and nothing takes away from that, but I worry that, in another situation, with a more determined shooter, a different teacher may just get killed trying to replicate these results.

Teachers have been asked to do so much this school year. We are all highly stressed ourselves. Thank you Krista Gneiting for having the courage and mindset to handle this awful situation. Trying to get mental health help for children is so hard to get, if a parent does not give permission. Many parents don't want to admit that help is needed. There is only so much a teacher can do. I sure hope this little girl gets the help she needs. Violence is never the solution.

Before we knew who the teacher even was that got the shooter & the gun. My daughter said, "I bet it was Mrs. Gneiting who did it! She just has this attitude & personality that I bet it was her!" No, it’s actually because it rarely ever happens. This is *just* mass shootings, not school shootings, where the rate is probably a lot lower.
What an amazing person/woman/teacher. Everything she said was exactly on point. She understood, she disarmed because she was able to (not everyone is able to), she helped and saved so many lives.

I know what you mean. But I don't necessarily think that not reporting on every single school shooting is necessarily a bad idea.
In my country we don't really have a widespread school/mass shooting problem. But when things like this happen (or, in our country more likely: When people commit suicide by jumping in front of a train) it doesn't necessarily make the news - especially not on national level - because the people are aware that it can inadvertently basically "give people ideas" and lead to others imitating the action. Interestingly this is something that has been observed and kind of handled in this way even as far back as in the 18th century: A famous poet wrote a book about a suffering adolescent who eventually took his own life. After the book was first published (remember: books are amongst the earliest forms of mass media) there was literally a surge in suicide among young people who identified with the struggles of the story's main character. That lead to this book being banned from being sold for a period of time and the suicide rate dropped again.
I can imagine that for some of these school shooters, who may or may not feel extremely desperate and neglected/forgotten etc., they might (1) have gotten their idea to do it from hearing about this on the news all the time and (2) part of their motivation to do it might be to be "seen" at least once in their life.
In any case it is pretty obvious that through all spheres of society the USA definitely is in need of healing and needing access to mental health care and healthier ways to deal with the pain and suffering and anxiety etc.

With the pandemic and all the school shooting incidents in this country, we can all unequivocally say that TOO MUCH is asked of our teachers. And yet they continue to be underpaid and underappreciated.

We defund schools and education every year, while the police and jails get more and more funding to put people in them. We got rid of mental health facilities, and started putting children on Adderall which is meth light, change needs to happen if we want this to stop. We want to deify the person who stopped the situation, which she should be commended, but also do nothing to ensure this doesn't happen again.

How can we be effective if we have to do so at arms length? I see heartbreaking situations swallow kids whole every day yet am rendered powerless to intervene by the same administration that holds me accountable for a multitude of elements that are either purposely beyond my control due to fear of liability on the part of the school district, or I am simply not equipped to handle because I lack the training and authority. Changes must be made. So many that it’s overwhelming to try to even know where to start. All I can do each day is model for my students how we should treat one another with respect and compassion. It’s far harder than it sounds- most days I can’t even manage to get them to stop talking and pay attention. Many of them don’t even know what that means.

@@Ryan-nn1kl to me, the problem is simple, but the solution is complex beyond imagination. Children in this era are increasingly depressed and mentally afflicted statistically. The problem in my opinion is the degradation in the quality of parenting and the home environment in the last few decades, which has harmed children's strength, resiliency, and ability to socialize with others. The fact our society allows us to wield firearms is something that will likely never be changed, at least not for several more decades if ever. I think we should focus our attention on the problems which we CAN fix, which is child development, parenting, and the home environment, rather than trying to further restrict guns, which I don't really see as a way of actually stopping the crimes from happening. We can't have our cake and eat it too, it's tragic but i suppose its better we try to do something actionable and less idealistic. In other countries, things like mass stabbing occur, which are obviously less fatal, but it almost seems like its begging us to address the problem of the unsocialized, depressed individual with nothing to lose, who is then an extreme danger to others.

Middle school is a crucial time for kids. The transition from being little kids to adolescence with puberty and hormone changes it does have a huge impact on kids and their behaviors. Don't really know this young girl's story but it can also maybe be problems at home. We don't really know, but I pray that she gets the help that she needs and the teacher deserves an award and lots of recognition for her bravery and compassion.

This is why parents needs to pay attention to their kids. All she needed was love and feel like she belong. Most the kids who do this are unloved at home. And have to deal with school bullying as more. Some people are no good parent's.
Some kids just don't open up about their day, even when asked, public school is hard and it never gets easier, it's unfortunate, she is a young teenager and it's very hard to tell what emotions were going through her head kids at that age or any age to be honest are not nice
@@natalieeubank4533 Kids don't need to tell you exactly what their days like for an attentive parent to notice something's wrong. Kids don't have to open up about everything they feel to be loved. Love your children openly. Pay attention to them. Tell them. Talk to them. It doesn't necessarily have to be about themselves.
I wonder if the parents even have the TIME to keep track of her. Work consumes more and more of everyone's time and energy, to the point where children are best viewed as luxury items in this day and age. Parents are exhausted, resources are scarce, more and more is demanded of everyone....and then BOOM. Something like this happens. And then we pause for about 15 minutes before starting it all over again.

As someone who struggled so hard with mental health in school, this teacher is not just a hero, she’s an Angel on earth. She saved that little girl. She gave love when others would give hate. Absolutely melts my heart. I am not in a good place right now, but this story made me want to keep fighting. To become someone like this, and help someone like me some day. Thank you 🙏🏼

I live in Idaho and Rigby has a HUGE bullying issue that never gets addressed. Its one of southeast Idaho's worst schools. I'm positive bullying played a role.

My son is 11 and will be starting 6th grade in August and it breaks my to think a child this age could be hurting so bad to think this is the way to go. And I’m appalled at how easily she was able to obtain a gun and know how to use it?? An investigation into her home life needs to be done. At this age she needs help not jail.

im actually glad this situation didn’t escalate into that little girl getting killed by police..knowing how they charge individuals in an aggressive tone can be scary and could’ve made her in the state she was already in even worse. shout out to the teacher for being calm and bringing a comforting aura into hers.

It's not that. Kids 6-9th grade are still developing critical thinking skills. They are also going through puberty. If, at the same time, something that seems traumatic to THEM happens, thus can happen. They don't think of the after of the situation often times. The ones who do are usually the ones who make cops shoot them, kill them, or they kill themselves. I'm a former 7th grade teacher....I've had to talk kids down...not from guns, but my goodness they can make astoundingly bad decisions and you give them something else they could have done and they look astounded.....if I hadn't suffered a back injury, I'd still be teaching.....
This isn't just in the US it's all over...
This is why mental health needs to be a bigger deal

Why is it that American kids go through breakdowns and immediately think taking someone’s life or shooting a bunch of kids essentially traumatizing an entire school is going to make them feel better. What’s that about? I hope she gets help but honestly I feel far more for the people that got shot and the other students there who might now have to deal with ptsd and all of that because of her actions. I also hope she gets all the help she needs but she also needs to get all the consequences some time in juvenile detention and a good therapist so she can learn hurting others can’t help her. Those poor kids that got shot, that had to run from their classrooms thinking they might get shot...
Dina Salysa, it is far more common for struggling kids to commit suicide rather than homicide or some combination of the two. I don't know if it makes them feel better. Oftentimes, the shooter dies in the process, so it's tough to say. I agree though, that the girl in this story needs help, but shouldn't necessarily reintegrate into society. It is possible to feel compassion for someone and at the same time, recognize that the rest of society needs to be protected.
Kids that have mental breakdowns don't IMMEDIATELY think of taking someone's else's life, much less their own. It's a violent spiral into a terrible mindset and rationale isn't exactly the first thing present when people are in pain. More often than not, those violent thoughts are internalized into suicide, but homicide isn't a decision they make with rationality. She wasn't dead set on doing it either.

I can only imagine myself how hard that must've been and it's great that you've persevered it. 💕 Hateful thoughts and self loathing have become so ubiquitous in today's society and its a devastating fact. Im glad that no one was killed. Reminds me a lot of the shooting in 2019 where a coach also disarmed and hugged a shooter. Still, that girl's childhood is pretty much over. For comparison, the 2019 shooter received three years probation in a mental health facility. However, that case differs greatly from this one. He only had one shell in the gun and it was clear he intended only to hurt himself and not others. This girl shot three people and traumatized hundreds of her classmates for the rest of their lives. She's extremely lucky no one died. Still, she's likely facing three charges of attempted murder at the very least. So at the very least, she'l be sentenced to a juvenile facility until she turns 18.
At the least, she deserves juvenile prison until she’s 17. Then jail till she’s 27, you don’t get away with something because you’re a little girl and everyone feels bad for you. Well I shouldn’t say you don’t, because you pretty much do.

Yes and teachers have been protecting their kids when shootings have happened. Thats why we do lockdowns in schools. Its easier said than done when you are in a situation as such. We need actual armed security officers in schools and metal detectors. Some schools have them here in NYC but its usually the HS and depending on the city.

What about the custodian/janitor who also stepped in and protected some of the kids? They didn't get shot but still intervened. .Everyone no matter how small a role needs to be recognized.
So sad. The emotional turmoil our children are in these days is disturbing. Kids feel unloved, unwanted, bullied, or worthless and they do these things trying to feel something. It’s heart breaking.

Teachers have been asked to do so much this school year. We are all highly stressed ourselves. Thank you Krista Gneiting for having the courage and mindset to handle this awful situation. Trying to get mental health help for children is so hard to get, if a parent does not give permission. Many parents don't want to admit that help is needed. There is only so much a teacher can do. I sure hope this little girl gets the help she needs. Violence is never the solution.
