This sounds like a mix of innocence, romance and laidback vibe, all wrapped into one, sprinkeled with a classical feel. I haven't had to time to dive into much Italian prog yet, but it's on the list. I do however own the album "Io Sono Nato Libero" by Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, and that I can highly recommend. But that's quite a different vibe to what we've just heard, much more dramatic and serious (but I absolutely LOVE that album).

Le Orme definitely have their moments where they sound a bit more like ELP than they do here, but they're very much their own group. I absolutely love Aldo's voice. They've been through a number of different phases, as well. Their first couple of releases are very much steeped in 60a psychedelia, before settling in to the classic k/b/d trio with Collage. Then they added a guitarist and went for a somewhat more commercial sound beginning with Smogmagica, and then shifted radically to a almost classical acoustic chamber quartet with Florian (a highly recommended album). Then they dabbled with synth pop I'm the 80s, dabbled a bit with Mike + the Mechanics style AOR on Orme, before returning to a something more like their classic sound on the mid 90s.

    Few Le Orme essentials songs
La porta chiusa (from Uomo di pezza 1971 italian prog)
Sospesi nell'incredibile (from Felona e Sorona 1972 italian prog)
    Maggio (from Contrappunti italian prog)
Los Angeles (from Smogmagica 1975 the group became a quartet adding the guitarist T. Marton and the sound got more heavy)
Regina al Troubadour (from Verità nascoste 1976 where they changed guitarist with G. Serafin increasing their crunchiness in a subtle deep purpleshy way)
Al mercato delle pulci (from Storia o leggenda 1977 )
El gran senser (from Florian 1979 their first totally acoustic album. A real gem where they were almost doing classical music)
Piccola rapsodia dell'ape (from Piccola rapsodia dell'ape 1980 where they continued the full acoustic mode)
Then Germano Serafin the guitar and violin player left the group to pursue his classical music interest and to play with the Treviso Symphony Orchestra (unfortunately he passed away in 1992)
After this their remained as a trio and went elettropop in 1982
They returned to prog in 1996 but without Pagliuca that was replaced by two keyboardists.
    After that I lost them.

Not heard of them, and not what I expected. Billed as prog, 3 piece, bass, drums, and keys... It's the Italian ELP I thought. But then, no, not at all. Unless these track are atypical. 1st track, started strong, I think I know where it's going, then drops to just soft piano and voice, reviving later on. 2nd track, also gentle, a little more electronic, and with some really nice acoustic guitar. Intriguing... Overall, i enjoyed both these, and look forward to hearing more of these guys.

When you do check them out Jfergs - be careful - Banco, Le Orme and PFM all are simply superb but don't listen to the watered down English versions. They have a few albums they made to try to break into the UK/American markets where they re-do their songs and sing in English. Listen to their original albums - they sing in Italian and are simply - better. I know you want to hear their best work - in my opinion their Italian albums far and away are their best work.

The story of Gioco di Bimba Is really dark actually, strongly opposed to the sweetness of the music. All the lyrics are a metaphor of a rapist (the furtive shadows that follows the young lady, and the line "in a baby child game a woman is lost" probably is about her innocence and virginity being stolen by the man). It's one of the most famous song of the band and it carries a strong message masked behind a childlike story. I believe at the time it caused some concern because it was quite unusual to talk about something like this in "pop" music.

  • @tobytanzer
    @tobytanzer 3 года назад +4

Very pastoral feel to this. You nailed it with the word "relaxing". I have had Felona E Sorona since 1975 and it is ok to listen to now and then. I liked this song better. If you like the folk side of prog try Harmonium, from Quebec. Also from Quebec, I think you will like Maneige, an instrumental jazz fusion band with a hint of Gentle Giant. I agree with others who highly recommend PFM and Banco. Cheers JP. Keep spreading the word. Can't wait for Tommy on your next turntable.

Le Orme is great. We talk a lot about England as the premier land for progressive music, Italy was pretty great at prog rock too.
I would love to see you react to Harmonium, a french canadian "prog-folk" band. If i had to describe them, I'd say they are a blend of Le Orme, Mike Oldfield, Spirogyra and Jethro Tull; however they're pretty unique...

Gigantic surprise, indeed. Le Orme's Felona e Sorona (the lp following Uomo di Pezza) was the very first album I bought and a true prog concept album masterpiece. Highly, highly recommended (the Italian version is better than the English one with Peter Hammill lyrics). One peculiar thing in the band's early production is that they always included a charting pop song in every album. In this case, Gioco di Bimba.

I knew this song since my high school years, i always interpreted it like a man is looking at an innocent girl, too young to be a woman, too old to be just a child, but still innocent. At the light of the moon she is so beautyful and outwordly that his attraction transforms in some kind of aggression, not sure if sexual assault or something else, maybe he just scared her by walking towards her and is intentions are being misunderstood...but anyway after that event, she will be no more an innocent child but a girl and the man has to live with the remorse and feeling of sin he feels for ruining forever such heavenly and rare things like innocence and beauty, that matched perfectly at their best in taht child that night, with the same careless action

You mentioned the "street music sound" of these songs which is interesting because Angelo Branduardi released a series of seven albums, "Futuro Antico." As I remember it his concept was of a street band (actually a group specialising in mediaeval music) playing songs from different centuries. It was quite folky but very good, I thought. They even have two all-instrumental albums 'Di Terra' and 'Garofano Rossa' which lean classical - but I love them. Tragically Francesco Di Giacomo died in a car accident - about 7 (thanks Samuele) years ago. Also - you must check out PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi) to understand the quintessence of RPI - Rock Progressivo Italian. They are considered the big three. One other Italian MUST is more political and much more experimental and are famous for their groundbreaking singer who also passed away - in 1979 - Demetrio Stratos of the band 'Area' also deserve your attention. With that being said - my all-time favorite vocalist is Peter Hammill.

@@vdggmouse9512 Yeah, I absolute love Francesci Di Giacomos voice, so much feel, control and power, and at the same time it feels effortless. I'm Norwegian, so I don't mind lyrics in a foreign language.
I learned abuot Banco and so many else from Pete Pardo on Sea of Tranquility (youtube-channel). He has a huge love for prog (also Italian), rock, metal, jazz and fusion from the 60's, 70's, 80's and onwards. I highly recommend his channel to anyone wanting to discover great music.
I've heard some albums from Italian prog acts (YS- Balletto di Bronzo, Semiramis - Dedicato A Frazz, Area - Crac! and PFM - Per Un Amico, are the ones I remeber right now). Area - Crac! , is the first one I'll revisit I think, it just has that wonderful quirky Gentle Giant feel + really interesting jazz leanings. I just need to finish some of my album listens to free up some space in my brain :)

A dot separates syllables, an apostrophe indicates the stressed syllable (upside down apostrophe = secondary stress):
    Le orme is pronounced [le.ˈor.me]
    Uomo di pezza [ˈwɔ.mo.di.ˈpɛt.tsa]
    Gioco di bimba [ˈdʒɔ.ko.di.ˈbim.ba]
    Aldo Tagliapietra [ˈal.do.ˌta.ʎa.ˈpje.tra]
    Toni Pagliuca [ˈtɔ.ni.pa.ˈʎu.ka]
For the vowels, just look up the IPA vowel space, the position of each symvol just tells you straight up where to put your tongue to make the vowel it represents. For the consonants, it's a bit more complicated, you just gotta learn them 😅
