- Andrew Gray, Curator of Herpetology at Manchester Museum spent his career studying the Splendid leaf frog. However, when a supposed new species arrived from Central America, he made a shocking discovery. Using the original specimen of the Splendid leaf frog-first collected in 1902-as a comparison, Gray noticed several unique distinctions between the latest arrivals and those he had been studying. These were, in fact, the Splendid leaf frog and the frogs Gray had been studying were the new species.

“It’s remarkable that such a distinctive new species has remained undetected for such a long time” he said. The finding required a designation for the mistaken amphibians. As the discoverer, Gray was given the honor and decided to name them after his granddaughter, Sylvia. Less than 150 specimens of Sylvia’s leaf frog have been recorded, and there are only 50 known specimens of the Splendid leaf frog. Filmmaker Katie Garrett highlights the importance of correctly classifying and conserving these rare creatures in this stunning short.

How amazing thank u
Thank you for showing us these beautiful frogs and telling their stories. 😊💕💕💕
The photographer need a raise
Me hate humans even I'm a human why.....
We're destroying habitats
Killing animals
And destroying the Amazon forest....
@@sparcrinical9706 Humans are destroying forests all over the world, not just the Amazon! Isn't that lovely?!!!
The high quality photography and lighting of the frogs made this a very satisfying video to watch. Thanks.
I wish I was as passionate about something as this scientist is about tree frogs
I was thinking the very same thing!
I bet you'll find your thing eventually, just keep learning about all the things and one day, you'll realize which one is your favorite, that you won't want to stop studying the said thing. It'll be your thing. One hundred percent your own.
You are it's being worthless your killing it
Immerse yourself in everything and every experience you can and you will find your passion
I'm very passionate about not being passionate about anything.
Congratulations on the finding. All those observation and patience really paid off. What a sweet way to name it too.
i found 3 new species of insects in my lifetime
U have the national geographic liking it comment cool
he searched FIVE YEARS I would give up after about a month
After studying this frog for nearly a decade, I came to realize that it's actually a completely different type of frog to the one I thought I was studying.
What was it called then?
Victor P09 bruhhh its a sarcasm he is saying he wasted time studying wrong frog

Heather C. So true!
Oh get over it snowflakes
He's discovery opened up a new journey for himself too, finding more of the old frog. That means he can make direct use of his findings and save a species from extinction. Great video.
I cried when he said he named it after his granddaughter 😭😭😭
So very thoughtful
I hope you felt better.
Such beautifully colored little Tree Frogs, with comical little faces. Congratulations on your find and may we as a society protect them. Thank you!
*Very Impressive*

One of the most wholesome jobs… froggo studies
Every species play a big role in our environment and it is right to widen our knowledge and understanding about those little creature..
Agree.. 👍
It is a beautiful frog! Those edges and how they fit give it a really sharp look. Hopefully cloning will get better so we don’t have to remove so many for preservation. :/
Just an incredible film. Exquisite shots and cinematography - heartbreakingly beautiful and an amazing resource.

National Geographic Thanks for replying. I will definitely check the link out! Thanks 🐸
I’m not really a frog person, but you sold me on these little guys. Precious and beautiful. I love watching them close/clear their eyes.
Ecuador, the country he went to and mentions, is an amazing place! There's a lot of things to do there and everyone is friendly. Would recommend going and visiting sometime! Beautiful country.
Why did I start crying when he said he named the frog after his granddaughter... that was so touching
Science is breathtaking.
Everytime something unknown is known, some reality emerges out of it.
Wonder what's the ultimate reality holds in its arms.
Make it BLUE if nature makes you awestruck!
It's not about knowing what is beautiful and what is not, it's about seeing how something is actually beautiful!
Frogs are some of the most beautiful, cutest animals nature has ever devised!
Are you a 🐸?
Nine minutes of absolute wonderment 💚🐸❤️ I had goosebumps at how the frog got its name 🥰
I literally didn’t realized that frogs are actually hella cute
Animals are absolutely beautiful. Real life living art
Nat Geo we love your short film showcase videos, plz keep making more of them🙏☺️
Nature is truly the greatest artist of all time.
Andrew has the best job in the world!
The author of the title of this this video deserves more credit
Agreed. Too often, titles spoil the content/story. This was a perfect title.
These little guys are so CUTE! Great job on your find, sir!
These frogs are so cute and precious.
My eye jerked a tear when he said "When i... when i disappear."
If I ever becoming extremely successful in my career and end up making a ton of money, I want to donate so much to these organizations that are at the forefront of the conservation and understanding of our natural world. As the stewards of this planet, it's our duty to protect and understand it.
The world needs more truly passionate people like this scientist. I love that their love, passion, and life long pursue allows us to understand one unique creature in this world better.
The unsung heroes, scientists.
The frog looks like CGI, and it looks beautiful
Great job trying to preserve our animals and wild life Andrew.
What an achievement!!! Just WOW!!! And Andrew Gray named it after his grand daughter. She is the luckiest girl in the world to have a granddad like Andrew.
Such a great story!
It reminds me of when parents think they can’t have a child, and are sad about it.....then the phone rings one day and changes their lives forever 🐸💕
Holly Warehouse strange comparison
I think it just goes to show that we really do need analyze everything. And question everything even with the evidence in front of you until your satisfied.
frogs are cute. please take care of them good :)
Looking at these frogs is so beautiful, it makes me feel how little we know and how life is so fascinating .
Colours of nature are outstanding
Gracias, Andrew Gray por compartir tal logro, es una hermosa rana esa que llevará el nombre de tu nieta SYLVIA, una maravillosa historia de ciencia y amor a la familia Excelente.
Beautiful video
What a wonderful discovery thank you
*”I have fear of frogs”*
I love frogs and 🐢❤
God I hate the editing on this video. Quadruple the length to give no information on how they are actually different. This is why small content producers are so much better on RUclips, and why I've given up on network TV.
This frog is extremely rare. Let's kill one and put it in a jar. 🤨😒😒😒
@Filipovski 963 sure they do. It took them 5 years to find one
That has been a practice since the earliest days of natural sciences, when amphibians weren't a threatened species, and no conscience of manmade extinction existed. Melville wrote that whales were inextinguishable, and Verne that killing a predator was always good.
Now, not all biologists can go to jungles and deserts (carrying their labs) to study the anatomy and genetics of some rarely seen amphibian in South America. Specially when the way to discern between species is by comparison.
Here we had a living Ecuadorian frog and a conserved specimen taken decades ago in Panama. Get the picture?
They don’t kill them, they wait until they die naturally. They wouldn’t kill a random one just to preserve it.
I've always loved (especially the many gorgeous green) tree & leaf frogs, & actually all treefrogs. Their odd, suction toes are so beautiful, with such an ingenious structure and that alone makes them so interesting!
Frogs are the best

What a lovely story
Awesome short, frogs all 'round!
Frogs are music of nature
Wow those were both amazingly beautiful frogs!
natural history museums are the most fascinating places on earth imo
beautiful , incredible , amazing
I really do respect these people and what they do, and I grew up going to science museums. I feel sad about the capture of these individual creatures, but I can’t fathom the scope of the benefits of studying them.
Frogs are so precious. I want that job
I love listening to them sing at night but rarely see them.
“It really became my frog”... is there anything you people don’t take claim too?
Your mum

it's GOD'S FROG, always has been, always will be.
Don't forget that.
I don’t know why I was expecting the frog to not be a frog but some shapeshifting animal.
That is the cutest frog i have ever seen
This is very cool , I wish I was as passionate about something as small as a frog as these people are

Very cute & beautiful. ♥️
I like my National Geo vids, but I almost didn't watch this one because of the clickbait title.
Frog: I am gonna end this man's whole career.
Now that's what I call good company!
I wonder how on Earth the frog was snuck out. I wonder if it matters much to know now. I have to let it go. :/
Part of me is happy it is being admired and studied but I’m also concerned about it not being in his habitat. I pray that the frog is treated with the utmost care and love it deserves. Be well little friends.
Sylvia is a very lucky girl. That is a beautiful frog
Frogs is the one animal I’m very scared of. And I don’t know why
Well, that's a plot twist if there was one.
None of such things should be of any concern if it threatens to stop a real estate development.
I spent my career studying a frog that wasn't the frog I thought it was and then I looked in the mirror and found that I didn't have the haircut that I thought I had
Wonderful frog ! Sad for it having to be born in Manchester . Hopefully they can be set free in their natural environment again. 🇫🇷
Cool story
I love frogs! 😃
Who knew?? Fantastic!!
There's no telling how many different cataloged "species" are actually just variations of the same "species"
