This dojo looks very humble. I wish there was one where I live. Isshin Ryu was very common where I live. Now nothing. I enjoyed a few years practicing. Then came marriage and family. No regrets.

Shimibuku created and named the kata which he developed from the techniques he liked best

himibuku. Angi Uezu did not name the Kata although I believe the rock story otherwise.

Here's why black belt testing should not be done by Kata. When I was 20 years old, I was tested for black belt in Isshinryu, but because I kept forgetting about 10% of the last Kata, they never promoted me.
In fighting ability, I was able to win 1vs2 handicap matches against their SECOND DEGREE black belts, one of whom was an ex-Marine and the other was my own age. I eventually had to quit karate to focus on school and work, but I can walk into a jiujitsu dojo or Isshinryu dojo today and challenge anybody and beat them at their own style. My sensei was Mark Meyers, who was Advinculas student.

Sorry, but I'm old school: kata is the foundation of karate. Moreover, karate is for self-defense, not challenging people to fights. I teach my students to try to break anything they punch, because on the street, it's not about points or referee decisions--it's life or death. My sensei is also a student of Advincula sensei. Good luck to you!

@@dr.danosullivan9269 I can break anything i punch. We sparred full contact in Mark Meyers' dojo, including Jiujitsu and "combat judo" etc. I actually have a video of myself online breaking a concrete and wood composite headboard of a bed a few months ago, but I'm not sure which of my videos it was, because I forgot to title it correctly. Anyway, I learned an INCREDIBLE amount from Mark and Sherry Meyers and I had the honor of attending about 200 Seminar hours with Grand Master Advincula all together. I wish I had more time studying with him, to be honest. I had about another 100 hours studying under two other Isshinryu 'multi-grand masters' in Kung Fu, so I have a very well rounded background in martial arts.

@@dr.danosullivan9269 Look, I'm sorry I didn't mean to offend anyone, it's just that I only "failed" the black belt test because I don't have a photographic memory for every kata I've ever done, but I was fighting at the equivalent of 3r or even 4th degree black belt and yet never got a 1st dan because of forgetting ten percent of Sunsu Kata repeatedly.

@@WadeSmith-oe5xd Oh, I’m not offended. There are lots of great styles and systems out there. Traditional karate is based in kata, that’s my only point.
