I am mexican and I was looking for more critiques from trans and queer people, so thank you for sharing your opinion. The representation of Mexico and our problems is TERRIBLE, and honestly I doubted it would be any different from the trans perspective. Everything in the production is off and shows how little they cared about representation, the worst part is that I heard people say this couldn't have been done by mexicans and that there wasn't ANY mexican or latin american actresses for the main roles when there is SO MUCH TALENT in our communities. Karla has also said many offensive comments against mexicans who criticize the movie calling us ignorant as if this was peak representation for anyone... When she is a white woman from Spain. If you want to see a VERY GOOD representation of trans women with A LOT of mexican queer talent, I invite you to watch the show "Secreto en el Rio" in Netflix. And I would also recommend you to read the article “Emilia Pérez” is Not Good Trans Representation in GLAAD, where they gather the reviews of various queer writers.
Is it supposed to be good representation though? No offense, but this was made by a french white guy and its a musical. I would not go in there expecting realism and good representation of real issues in the first place. I have not heard if they advertise it as such, actually I heard very little about this movie until I heard about it winning some award or something?
@@GasparGaWhat do you mean?. "not go there and expect good representation of real issues" So you expect a mockery of it?. Also thats the point of good representation its supposed to be realistic cuz it's talking about real issues. Its literraly macking issues like Drug trafficking a Joke Mexicans themselves are trashing on the movie, ben Shapiro himself dosen't like the movie, and shes wrong for not for not feeling that it represents her?.
My problem the director missrpresented the mexican culture, admitted he didnt do the homework on that, none of the actors are not mexican ...so many mexican actors but none were casted....and the music arrangement including the lyrics were poor
Its not only misspresentes, its pure "i dont really give a Shit about México, I just gonna see some Narco-series or Documental about them and I work with It" Because HOW YOU DARE TO MAKE THE CARTEL (or ex-members) AND FAMILY MEMBERS OF PEOPLE THAT THOSE CARTEL JUST KILL AND BURY IN SOME RANDOM PLACE JUST "HELP TO FIND" THOSE PEOPLE? LIKE WTF????? ITS NAIVE, ITS A INSULT TO THOSE WHO ARE STILL SEARCHING THEM (by them self, because the police or dont give a Shit neither or are Buy by the same cartel that kill them) FOR TO AT LEAST GIVE THEM A PROPER FUNERAL BECAUSE THOSE PEOPLE ARE NO MISSING, THEY ARE ALREADY DE*D

I struggled to care about both main characters as they dont really have to come to terms with what they have done. Its hard to sympathise with the head of a cartel and a lawyer who defends a murderer then immediately takes a cartel money. The film jumps straight to them being heros without any genuine reckoning
Agree this was my main issue with the film. And ending the movie that way makes me question if the director even saw Emilia as a bad person for actions as a drug lord. There was really no internal struggle with her character previously being the one killing people.
Actually you can make people sympathize with a cartel leader and the lawyer who takes cartel money. Just look at Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul but the writing needs to be self-aware enough to depict these two as bad people who deserve comeuppance.

The director said that he didn't even look into the culture and reality of Mexico to make the film, so the entire movie is based on a stereotype of it. And as for casting, they dared to say that they couldn't find Mexican actors for the roles. Since you're not Latino, you have no idea how insulting this movie is to the community, especially to Mexico.
It's nothing new for Hollywood to cast actors with approximate ethnicities. Crazy Rich Asians is about an ethnically Chinese family living in Singapore yet a bunch of the actors are toed to neither country. Some are Korean, one is from Malaysia, etc. Main actresses from this movie are American with Puerto Rican/Dominican heritage, and a Spanish woman. Could be worse.
@hypotheticaltapeworm I get it, but seriously, they have Mexican actors literally a country away, there are many more in Hollywood who could perfectly fill any role (even trans actresses). They just should have put a little more effort into the casting (and a little bit with the script). If we were in 2016 this movie would not have been made nor would it have survived the cancellation. It can be as good as you want it to be, but for most of Latin America it is a cringe movie full of stereotypes.
Cis male here. I might not have much to say about the trans experience, but I'm Mexican-American and I left Mexico because of cartel violence. The movie is a mess. It has great latin american talent in front of the camera, but definitely would've benefited from some behind. Emilia is awful. She's a terrible human being with no redemption. SPOILERS: She may have started an organization to find bodies of victims of violence, but it's such a cheap gesture when she murdered them. I couldn't care for her. Selena Gomez is God awful, her dialogue is unintelligible without subtitles. The mix in the songs is terrible, you can't understand Spanish lines at all. Such a shame. The camera work is breath taking.
I agree, Selena Gomez speaking Spanish is so bad, the acting is awful. It just feels they don't understand anything about the culture either, just a mockery
Yes! I couldn't care for her motives when her money had blood on it and she didn't care for the missing people (when she tells a woman her husband died, she doesn't show any empathy). I'm not a cinephile but what I understood in the end we're supposed to think she was a good person???
what Latin American talent? There aren't even any Mexican actors there. The casting director said they "searched all over Latin America" but couldn't find the right talent for the project...
I’m so glad I came across your review. I really REALLY didn’t like Emilia Perez. It actually makes me mad every time I think about it. I’m nonbinary but I’m pretty femme presenting. The only reason I bring this up is because I never get harassed or reported for using women’s restrooms or dressing rooms, but I’m friends with many trans women & nonbinary people who experience unfortunate & harmful hate & discrimination. Conservatives share fake statistics about trans women being violent when the real data shows trans women are as a whole very peaceful & not a threat to other women. Not only was the director ignorant of Mexican culture & minimized the very real issue in Mexico of missing & murdered women from the drug cartels, but he chose to have the trans character be a violent murdering drug cartel leader?! The falling the death & pretending to be a family member tropes were super cliche, too. I felt like I was going out my mind watching the film. Zoe Saldana & Karla Sofia Gascon were giving the performances of their lives in a soulless tale that didn’t seem to see women as fully human.
Emilia Perez is deeply offensive to Latino culture. The narrative on drug cartels touches upon immense pain and suffering in countries like México and Colombia, yet the movie trivializes this deeply sensitive issue. The attempt to "redeem" cartel figures reflects an uninformed and detached perspective, disregarding the real violence that has devastated countless lives. Jacques Audiard’s approach is both insensitive and an appropriation of Latino culture. It is still shocking that he was nominated for a Golden Globe, despite being a French director with no lived experience of the Latino world. It is no coincidence that the decision to release the movie in México on January 25th feels especially tone-deaf. This calculated move seems designed to gain visibility while disregarding the emotional impact such a film may have on those directly affected by the violence it references. This level of cultural insensitivity and exploitation must be called out and addressed.
Me indigna muchísimo.
I can't talk much about the trans experience, since I am a cis woman, but I am Mexican, born and raised in Mexico and I can say that it is a film that uses Mexican culture, our struggles and our suffering as an aesthetic. I can't stand with people who think this movie is a good movie. Not only, it was not filmed in Mexico, but the director did not make even the slightest effort to investigate what the film was talking about, it is a slap in the face to all those people who have lost someone due to violence. I hate that in the US they believe that they have the right to a culture because their grandparents were from that culture, the reality of our life as Latin Americans is something that they cannot even imagine and that is why they fill it with stereotypes that they know from movies or the internet.
But she plays an American woman who learned Spanish as an adult. It's her second language, her mother tongue is English. Considering that her Spanish is pretty good.
watched this yesterday and was thinking “this is baffling trans representation surely” but was also like “maybe i just dont know what im talking about” so ive been really curious to hear some takes by actual trans people so thanks for this. glad to know im not insane for thinking that this is a terrible oscars frontrunner
The movie felt so unfocused... I also felt like Zoe's character was supposed to be the main character, but then she isnt, but neither is Emilia's character either.. then first it's about the corrupt legal system, then cartel gringo dumbassery, then a trans story, then not... And Maybe I'm too used to Broadway style Hollywood musicals because this did not follow those rules at all... They never built up to the songs correctly (well maybe twice)... But yeah it was mess.. me being Mexican I'd like to express that it felt super inauthentic a lot of the time... Very few actual mexican accents in the cast, also the approach and focus on the narcos 🙄.. but then I must remind myself its not a mexican movie.. so yeah it's french, guess it's an unfair expectation to have?
@@just2film there was some controversy over it because the actor playing her is a cis gendered man, but what people don’t realize is that South Korea is not LGBT friendly, so being out as trans or even gay is very unsafe. But they did a very good job with her portrayal and making her a sympathetic character.
Emilia Perez is proof of English speakers and other first-world individuals talking about respect and being correct, but then disrespecting and silencing those who are attacked by labeling them as 'haters' and 'exaggerators' when they speak out. To put it simply, it's like a Mexican director making a movie about 9/11, not doing their research, turning it into a musical, and ultimately glorifying Bin Laden. Taking mediocre actors who don't speak English well, have no American accents, and act from bad to horrible. And then, they win all the awards and think they've made a great representation of one of the biggest traumas in the United States.
As a Mexican who has been close to the real suffering that the cartel can cause, trying to be objective, I conclude that this is a creative and risky work that fails due to a lack of sensitivity and ignorance of the true Latin culture. I am aware of the number of ignorant people there are, but I am surprised that the director shows himself to be one of them and yeah I hated the empty ending and the try of Selena to speak spanish.
hi i'm french and know very little about mexican and, in general, latin america's culture and wanted to watch the film mainly to see how bad the trans representation from my country would be lol, and so i found most people were upset with the mexican representation too, so i'd like to learn more about what's wrong with the movie's depiction of mexico so i can stop being as ignorant as the average french lol (so far i saw mostly people pointing at glorification of the cartel and emilia, which to me sounds mostly like a plot issue more than representation, they treated her transition as an absolution of her sins for no reason)
@@zazertyoup9366 n short, it is offensive because Mexico is basically hell on earth thanks to organized crime. Mexico closed 2024 with 26,715 people murdered, according to preliminary figures from state prosecutors' offices shown in the Government Security Report. So far in 2024, Mexico has also registered 10,058 cases of missing or unlocated persons, the highest figure reported to date. 69.3%, five of the ten most dangerous cities in the world are in Mexico, drug traffickers do not deserve redemption, this movie is a ridiculous and offensive caricature that tries to be a dramatic criticism of the violence in my country. @@zazertyoup9366 If you'd like to watch a movie about narco culture in mexico that is a dark comedy but even then can approach the subject with sensitivity I can recommend El Infierno (2010). It's on Netflix
@@zazertyoup9366 the problem is that the center of the film is not about drug trafficking. The cartel is used as a mere narrative instrument to give strength to the plot. when it's a vacation movie, it's made in Hawaii. when it's a romantic film it's in Paris and when it's about drug trafficking they film it in Latin America. but urban violence is not part of the landscape nor part of our culture, it is a social problem from which we survive. It is not part of our lifestyle, it interferes with our lifestyle. and this type of film that makes Latin America a mere setting to represent violence associates this with Latin American identity, which is revictimization. and also in technical aspects they didn't even bother translating the script into Spanish in a decent way
for me emilia peréz felt really alienated. with a weird mixture of stereotypes (about mexico AND trans lives). i’m writing an essay about queer people in mainstream media, this film comes perfectly for this… its such a horrible peace of work at its core. while there is a trans actress(meanwhile no mexican ones) it’s so obvious, as you said, who is writing this and who isn’t (white male gaze). we as trans people are not the people writing it. mexican people are not writing it. if we’re not writing it, then at least let us have a say in it, interact, talk, research. this film isn’t researched. the filmmaker himself said he didn’t research. it just feels like he hit the criteria of “representation” (trans “main” character, black women (maybe actually more of a main character), other cultures, slap in selena gomez, now you’ve got all the views). the portrayal of the trans women is such a mess. the whole plot about her isn’t only just about the body change(which would be alienated from real experiences enough), HER WHOLE STORY is based on her LYING. she’s lying to her wife and children, to the world, nobody is allowed to know. the lawyer women has a line where she meets emilia after transition, she sings something along the lines: “oh you’re here to destroy all the evidence, you’re gonna kill me oh no”. why is she saying that? it implies 1. emilia is a liar, to hide her lie the evidence needs to be destroyed. emilia is only a women if nobody knows she’s actually a man(this is how i feel the film portrays her/transness). 2. emilia is violent. before her transition she’s a ganster. she’s bad evil a murderer. a man. after her transition she’s glowing great helps people changes the world aka mexico. a women. an angel. an icon. (iconic in an alienated way, it isn’t real) at the end she’s violent again, she wants the children. she goes back to old ways. this is not just a trans character with flaws. this feels like it’s so deeply connected with how they want to portray a trans character: she will never really leave behind her old ways. but to be a women she needs to be pretty, a good person, and honest. but she can never be entirely good nor honest(and it’s not about the gangsta part it’s about the trans part!)she can’t be honest. she will always be a man. then she dies. like . every . trans . women . in film. ever. this is part of my interpretation and a bit messy written. i’m researching all i can find about this movie. it’s extremely devastating for me that this is winning so many awards. i usually don’t really care about awards but i care about what people think and what media is presented to a lot of people. i have to say i disagree that it will have a good impact on people. i think this is a point in film history where it is once again so visible who gets the applause. for not working with people who this film is about. this film isn’t about mexico nor is it about trans people. but it acts like it is about and with them. for them. they dig out the bodies of the people in mexico! this is utopia this is great! it’s a trans women! see we have a trans women who is playing trans role! isn’t this what you wanted! but the film… it just uses them. i felt used. this deeply hurt me and my other genderqueer friend next to me in the cinema. while our cis friend was laughing and couldn’t grasp , also didn’t want to grasp what was actually going on in this movie. she said it was, as you also said in your video what people reviewed later, it was entertaining. how can so many people not grasp how flat the writing was. how can this be what so many people resonate with. why are the people who resonate white & cis. and why do my trans friend and me almost puke at the “man to women! p to v!” song. never have i felt so personally uncomfortable while watching a movie. no matter how bad they were. this was worse. as i said i’m researching right now, if someone reads this and has other interesting videos/texts, i would be really thankful! :) thank you for your video.
Wise , you are right. But, for some reason, will win a lot of prizes. Completely undeserved... is sad to see the leaders of the LGBTQ+ community slapping and clapping at this multiple offense.
as a mexican, i hate this movie. the director is french, who didn’t do research on mexico, and didn’t cast mainly mexican actors (i can only think of selena gomez), and the way they representation trans women is not right at all.
At some point in the movie, the phrase "change body, change society " repeats again and again like Mantra. Sorry. Maybe I'm ignorant but, i was sure this is not how it works.
Plus they are pushing Saldaña for supporting actress while Karla is the lead actress, so they can say the first trans actress nominated in leading roles.
I was so excited to watch this movie, and the first few minutes of the movie already disappointed me so much! Guys, let's be honest, the international film at the 2025 Oscars is I'm Still Here from Brasil, because Emilia Pérez will only win if they steal it...
I agree with you. Although the film has an amazing cast, it didn't caprure my attention or expectation!! I worked in the arts/theatre industry in New York, so I know great film/musicials when I see one. Bravo for the effort and message but definitely not the best of film/musical of the year.
Calling EMILIA PÉREZ a dissapointment is an understatement; it's a disaster, not only in how it treats Mexicans and trans people, but the screenplay is one of the worst I've ever witnessed. Why the "film" is being awarded and praised is just beyond me, honestly.
Omg, just discovered your channel while I was searching for different opinions about this movie after having conflicted emotions when I saw it ( mostly disappointement ). Soo refreshing to hear a well-thought-out and intelligent opinion about this piece. I'm subscribing!
I'm actually worried by how many cis people see this movie as a super touching trans story and as good trans representation because it perpetuates so many harmful stereotypes about trans women (transitioning to escape from bad actions they took before transitioning, abandoning their kids/Mrs. Doubtfire-ing their way back into their lives, just.. a total misunderstanding of the process of transitioning). for better or worse there will be many more movies about trans people that are written and directed by cis people in the future, people who mean well and want to tell stories about us with respect and dignity, and they're gonna be looking to other films about trans people for examples of good representation. I really don't want Emilia Pérez to be recognized as good representation and the fact that it has been is so frustrating
I’ve been on E for eight years and been incredibly active in the trans community this entire time. I hated this movie it was so generic and uninteresting in its portrayal of the trans experience. It’s clearly so limited by having a cis writer speak for and create the story of a trans woman. So much of this is just reducing the trans experience to medical jargon, sex and physical transitioning. It never goes into any of the mental transition or other changes that happen. And trailers and posters and what have you believe the trans character is a focal point but she feels like an afterthought. I left this hoping for more trans stories by trans people.
THANK YOU!!! Exactly!!! This is why I’m writing my own stuff! Please watch National Anthem. IDK if peeps who made it were trans but it has great trans peformers and characters in it.
@@just2film I’ll definitely check it out! Love supporting trans people in film. Super excited for yours when the time comes I know it’s gonna be fantastic.
This movie focuses on people that’s why the transgender actress who played Amelia Perez did an amazing job because she didn’t focus on the identity. She focused on Amelia being a person a human being.
The film's production company (Why Not Productions) previously worked with Darren Aronofsky (producing Jackie, even if he did not direct it), Blumhouse on the first The Purge film, and with Studio Ghibli on their Japanese-French-Belgian collab anime film The Red Turtle: Aru Shima no Monogatari. I wonder what your thoughts are on The Red Turtle if you saw it. And also The Purge films too, I guess.
@ The Red Turtle is a French-Japanese collab made by the producers of Emilia Pérez and The Purge (Why Not Productions), Studio Ghibli (anime studio known for making films like Spirited Away and The Boy and the Heron), and Wild Bunch (Studio Ghibli's European distribution partner, and big French film company in their own right).

my first time watching an Audiard film and i really don’t like it. i didn’t understand why we gave a shit about zoe’s character. also felt the surgery scene was weird and cringe. gonna give paris 13th district a watch.
Just went to the cinema today and blindy picked this film. Then when it started I was very exited that it was a musical and when it started with the trans plot I thought... HMMM interesting. I had no idea where it was going or how it would get there I gues. But in the beginning I somehow thought it would be going somewhere better and handling it better. Went a little down a cliff
Was so confused hearing backlash about this movie (that I also knew nothing about), so I really appreciate the perspective, background, and information you brought to this review!
Manitas had unlimited resources though and could afford the surgeries. It may be a trope but it made sense for the character. If anyone had recognized Emilia as Manitas, she would’ve been killed, probably her family too.
I was looking for a trans perspective on this film before deciding if I wanted to see it, and not only did you deliver that beautifully but also your hair is so cute?? Anyways thank you!
Only thing I thank Emilia Perez for is finding your chanel! as you have noticed, people in Mexico hate this film for several reasons (mostly related to the usage of Mexico's violence issues as a prop and a simplified background for a shallow story), however, I really wanted to listen to trans people's perception of it, that's how I realized I need to diversify the channels I follow regarding movies/culture reviews. I loved hearing your opinion on this movie and sharing recomendations of actual good movies regarding experiences of the trans community. I will be watching your content from now on, thank you!
I think the movie had potential to have a really good message. At first. I was a little confused about what it was about when I took a first glance at the synopsis. But I like to see trans women getting opportunities in media, especially at the forefront of a film. I do feel that the subject matter and the way that they handled that it wasn’t the best. And I don’t know why but I felt that the musical numbers were not good enough to carry the story of the film…. I also thought Selena Gomez Spanish-speaking was absolutely horrendous. And it really took me out of a lot of scenes.
national anthem was watched by someone from my film class (we were visiting queer filmfestival of my city in the seminar). the person talked about how this film felt like trans /queer life is only possible in this utopia and deeply analyzed how detached this film really is & from whom the gaze is/how the trans people are portrayed. since i haven’t & prob won’t watch this this film i cannot share my actual own opinion on it. but after watching the trailer i can already see what my classmate means. after all i would still be interested in what you have to say. if you would post a video about it i would watch it. i just feel like its not THAT great of an example of a “good” representation after all, with what i know about the movie.
I already watch it... the "philosophy" is "change the body, change the society". (Repeatedly like Mantra). And... I hate it, it throws 50 years of gender deconstruction studies to the trash... go trash Simone, go Trash conversion therapy. Go to trash doctor Money crimes and Doctor Diamond investigations. It want to sell Transition as kind of Paracetamol.
1: I have been on estrogen for over a year and selected this from a friend's recommendation. And while yes, it is naratively unfocused in the second act and has some repeated tropes, I had fun. Not enough to call it one of my favorites of the year, but it was a telenovela car crash that I enjoyed and was invested by. 2: Huge props for shouting out National Anthem, it was my favorite of the entire summer. And top 5 of the year for me. 3: Also wasn’t the trans character played by Garcon both pre and post op?
@just2film I was just a bit confused when you said that the character doesn't show up till 30 minutes in. You actually meet Emilia 15 minutes into the film, counting studio logos. I thought you meant like before her surgeries.
Are you into horror? Some of my favorites this year are In a Violent Nature and I Saw the TV Glow. Would love to know your thoughts on those. Also not horror but Rebel Ridge on Netflix is awesome directed by Jeremy Saulnier who did the excellent Green Room and Blue Ruin.
I'm yet to finish the video itself but I just want to say I have been watching your videos since at least 2016 and throughout all that time I changed and learned a lot (including the realization that I'm trans). We all love the lego content but seeing you cover media about issues you're passionate about (even if not all of them are perfect) in a way made me want to branch out a little more and watch things I probably wouldn't have just because they aren't "the current big thing". Keep up exactly what you're doing sarah :) Edit: you are very right about how weird cis people are in regards to trans surgery, they think it's appropriate to ask us all sorts of gross questions yet we're the weird ones in that situation. Sucks.
The Movie terrible, I honestly thought the main character was going call audience in theatre Turfs. The concept is joke i laugh out loud when i heard head cartel wanting be women 😂😂
i love this movie and okay with operations accentuating scenes. cause i think people should firstly begin being okay with people wanting to do something with their bodies. spoiler but yeah story is kinda dead queer again :(
You are a total disappointment this time. This movie is surprisingly good, and the songs are really good. I've lived in Mexico for 5 years and I don't think there's anything cringe about this movie.
You don't live in Mexico, you'll never know what n4rc0s means in Mexico just by living 5 years. I am Mexican, I have lived all my life in Mexico and this movie is horrible, offensive and cringe. The problem is not the actors or even the fact that there is someone trans but the way they stereotype our country and even make fun of such a horrible subject as being a victim of n4rc0s is simply despicable. And not to mention that they had no respect for our language... it seems that the script was translated with google translation... omg, the phrases don't make sense! nobody in Mexico speaks like that or uses those expressions. The director made a horrible project using the trans community, they deserve better.
@lilottego7331 Hmm. Which phrases don't make sense? Nobody speaks like that? Just because they don't use language like no mames, que padre, guey or hijo de la ching@da - for example? And how do they make fun of being a victim of narcos? Besides, there are other movies that present a negative image of Mexico, including Dennis Villeneuve's movie Sicario and a couple of Mexican movies.
That doesn't mean it's good at all. You're not Mexican, and you clearly do not understand our music, our language, and how important our jargon is to us. This movie misuses all of it at every chance; it's a waste, even as a comedy. We have amazing Black humor comedies about this same topic, like *El Infierno*, which is way better than this crap made by some willfully ignorant, pretentious French guy.
@ktom5262 Even if you lived here for 5 years, that doesn't mean being Mexican is part of your identity. Therefore, you liked some white-washed comedy, which includes no authentic Mexican music, even though it's a musical, using rhythms such as Huapango and Huasteca. Instead, some stupid songs don't even rhyme in Spanish, alongside the ridiculous accents and the bloody awful story in which the main character is supposed to be automatically good just because he turned into a woman. All of a sudden, just because of it, he magically develops a conscience. It was a shit show of disgusting appropriation and commodification.
The fact that you only see this movie as a trans movie is the problem….. your seem to be completely disconnected from what is the Mexican culture and how machismo it is. This movie a about a drug lord that’s trans woman and is going against her culture and profession in order to be happy.
I disagree, and your clouded judgement of what you feel a particular story that includes a trans character didnt fall into your percieved notion ogf how you want. It shows the life of a man whom was a cartel kingpin. And for you to have the gall and the audacity to moan cause the trans woman wasnt the MAin character. You by all accounts iss the point of the story. Emilia Perez came from a person who struggled and you could see nuances of the feminin within him by the jewelry upon introduction. His desperation to rush the process. The surgeon stating that if a wolf is a wolf its is always going to be a wold despite the wrapping. Maybe if you shifted the perspective and saw that their ois a price for everything good or bad. We pay for our deeds in life and there is always a knock on effect to our actions. But I guess your smartphone and social media soap boxing doesnt give you the perspec tive of say someone with ore scope and life experience. This is just one story. Emilia could not and can not fit into your percieved notion of trans ideology. Rather than showing a person with complex issues stemming from over compensation of a culture in latin america where The Man is supposed to be MAcho, Verile, etc etc. and how ever your bitching that she wasn't the main charachter and she doesn't fall into your agenda or tick your boxes. Maybe if you checked your ego and just saw this filmfrom a human perspective rather than a transyou might see something else. After All Eilia just wanted to be like everyone else and leave the life she left behind, yet it was a lot more complicated. BUt I guess the writer director whom showed a coplex character whom struggled with identity and trying to make a life past the chaos and violence doensn't suit your wants within a 2 hour format. Because Life is complicated or can be. When will you realise that everyone is different and this was a story of someone who truly wanted a normal life. Love, family, peace of mind, and make things right fro their past efforts. Their were no winners and Zoe Saldana and the rest of the cast was amazing. They humanised a complicated person despite their ugly past. After all Karla did an amazing job as i could see the male portions of her character. A difficult role. But it to me is a ove in the right direction of trans visability. I assure you if you watch it again you will see what I mean. By no means am i transphobic by making this post. But it sees a lot of younger trans people want to erase the past self and rush a process when life has a different plan for all of us. As a gay man it took me years to accept myself. But saying I am gay was only the first hurdle. Life showed me a path of lessons and ups and downs to find my true self. Like everyone else despite theior gender or sex and sexual preference. Life has a showing us where we need to be to get the next phases of life.
You tell me to check my ego and try explaining to me that everyone is different but this is a very condescending comment towards my opinion on a movie based on my own experiences. Rather ironic.
@@just2film nope you take it as condescending.. AND THE FACT REMMAINS EVERYONE IS ACTUALLY DIFFERENT. WETHER YOU CHOOSE TO REALIZE THAT IS ANOTHER ISSUE. So when was the last timre you ran a drug cartell and left children behind? Not ironic. Why do woke people aleays claim condescention when a different point of view. Yet I supose lack of life experience doesnt give you hindsight or the ability to broaden your scope. Not Ironic or irony.
"humanised" The trans character is literally a deceptive murderous criminal. Dated trope: see Ace Ventura, Silence of the Lambs etc. "want to erase the past self and rush a process" That's exactly what the character did. She didn't even try coming out to her wife before faking her death and ditching her and her kids.
And I would also recommend you to read the article “Emilia Pérez” is Not Good Trans Representation in GLAAD, where they gather the reviews of various queer writers.
thank you for sharing, i will read the article :)
Strongly agree!!
I totally agree
My problem the director missrpresented the mexican culture, admitted he didnt do the homework on that, none of the actors are not mexican ...so many mexican actors but none were casted....and the music arrangement including the lyrics were poor
Its not only misspresentes, its pure "i dont really give a Shit about México, I just gonna see some Narco-series or Documental about them and I work with It"
Because HOW YOU DARE TO MAKE THE CARTEL (or ex-members) AND FAMILY MEMBERS OF PEOPLE THAT THOSE CARTEL JUST KILL AND BURY IN SOME RANDOM PLACE JUST "HELP TO FIND" THOSE PEOPLE?
LIKE WTF?????
ITS NAIVE, ITS A INSULT TO THOSE WHO ARE STILL SEARCHING THEM (by them self, because the police or dont give a Shit neither or are Buy by the same cartel that kill them) FOR TO AT LEAST GIVE THEM A PROPER FUNERAL
BECAUSE THOSE PEOPLE ARE NO MISSING, THEY ARE ALREADY DE*D
It's an excellent movie, and the music arrangements including lyrics are very good.

As a Mexican, the most insulting thing about this movie is how boring, annoying, and poorly made it is
It's nothing new for Hollywood to cast actors with approximate ethnicities.
Can you share a link of where the director said he didn't look into the culture of Mexico please?
The camera work is breath taking.
thank you for sharing your experience!
I hate that in the US they believe that they have the right to a culture because their grandparents were from that culture, the reality of our life as Latin Americans is something that they cannot even imagine and that is why they fill it with stereotypes that they know from movies or the internet.
i’m confused by the last paragraph. The movie is french not american.

As a Mexican, that movie is a total insult. Both for the terrible miscast of Selena Gomez and the glorification of the narcos

@@KaeMcSpadden Numerous trans Koreans have pointed out that that isn't an excuse.

The cartel is used as a mere narrative instrument to give strength to the plot. when it's a vacation movie, it's made in Hawaii. when it's a romantic film it's in Paris and when it's about drug trafficking they film it in Latin America. but urban violence is not part of the landscape nor part of our culture, it is a social problem from which we survive. for me emilia peréz felt really alienated. with a weird mixture of stereotypes (about mexico AND trans lives). i’m writing an essay about queer people in mainstream media, this film comes perfectly for this… its such a horrible peace of work at its core. while there is a trans actress(meanwhile no mexican ones) it’s so obvious, as you said, who is writing this and who isn’t (white male gaze). we as trans people are not the people writing it. mexican people are not writing it. if we’re not writing it, then at least let us have a say in it, interact, talk, research. this film isn’t researched. the filmmaker himself said he didn’t research. it just feels like he hit the criteria of “representation” (trans “main” character, black women (maybe actually more of a main character), other cultures, slap in selena gomez, now you’ve got all the views).
the portrayal of the trans women is such a mess. the whole plot about her isn’t only just about the body change(which would be alienated from real experiences enough), HER WHOLE STORY is based on her LYING. she’s lying to her wife and children, to the world, nobody is allowed to know. the lawyer women has a line where she meets emilia after transition, she sings something along the lines: “oh you’re here to destroy all the evidence, you’re gonna kill me oh no”. why is she saying that? it implies 1. emilia is a liar, to hide her lie the evidence needs to be destroyed. emilia is only a women if nobody knows she’s actually a man(this is how i feel the film portrays her/transness). 2. emilia is violent.
before her transition she’s a ganster. she’s bad evil a murderer. a man.
after her transition she’s glowing great helps people changes the world aka mexico. a women. an angel. an icon. (iconic in an alienated way, it isn’t real)
at the end she’s violent again, she wants the children. she goes back to old ways. this is not just a trans character with flaws. this feels like it’s so deeply connected with how they want to portray a trans character: she will never really leave behind her old ways. but to be a women she needs to be pretty, a good person, and honest. but she can never be entirely good nor honest(and it’s not about the gangsta part it’s about the trans part!)she can’t be honest. she will always be a man.
then she dies.
like . every . trans . women . in film. ever.
this is part of my interpretation and a bit messy written. i’m researching all i can find about this movie. it’s extremely devastating for me that this is winning so many awards. i usually don’t really care about awards but i care about what people think and what media is presented to a lot of people. i have to say i disagree that it will have a good impact on people. i think this is a point in film history where it is once again so visible who gets the applause. for not working with people who this film is about. this film isn’t about mexico nor is it about trans people. but it acts like it is about and with them. for them. they dig out the bodies of the people in mexico! this is utopia this is great! it’s a trans women! see we have a trans women who is playing trans role! isn’t this what you wanted! but the film… it just uses them. i felt used. this deeply hurt me and my other genderqueer friend next to me in the cinema. while our cis friend was laughing and couldn’t grasp , also didn’t want to grasp what was actually going on in this movie. she said it was, as you also said in your video what people reviewed later, it was entertaining. how can so many people not grasp how flat the writing was. how can this be what so many people resonate with. why are the people who resonate white & cis. and why do my trans friend and me almost puke at the “man to women! p to v!” song. never have i felt so personally uncomfortable while watching a movie. no matter how bad they were. this was worse.
as i said i’m researching right now, if someone reads this and has other interesting videos/texts, i would be really thankful! :) thank you for your video.

And it really took me out of a lot of scenes.
national anthem was watched by someone from my film class (we were visiting queer filmfestival of my city in the seminar). the person talked about how this film felt like trans /queer life is only possible in this utopia and deeply analyzed how detached this film really is & from whom the gaze is/how the trans people are portrayed. since i haven’t & prob won’t watch this this film i cannot share my actual own opinion on it. but after watching the trailer i can already see what my classmate means. after all i would still be interested in what you have to say. if you would post a video about it i would watch it. i just feel like its not THAT great of an example of a “good” representation after all, with what i know about the movie.
watch the film first and then get back to me
@ okay :)
3: Also wasn’t the trans character played by Garcon both pre and post op?
national anthrm rules! congrats on e! 😁
but, where did i say emilia pre-surgeory wasnt played by sofia?
@just2film I was just a bit confused when you said that the character doesn't show up till 30 minutes in. You actually meet Emilia 15 minutes into the film, counting studio logos. I thought you meant like before her surgeries.
nah i was wrong, it just initially felt like that for me
There’s another movie about trans people that was really good called Crossing from Türkiye
havent heard of it, will be watching it soon now :)
@@just2film Just letting you know. Crossing is on prime video to rent if you wanna check it out.
I'm curious on what you thought.
The PR and marketing of this movie just makes it all worse.
Are you into horror? Some of my favorites this year are In a Violent Nature and I Saw the TV Glow. Would love to know your thoughts on those.
Also not horror but Rebel Ridge on Netflix is awesome directed by Jeremy Saulnier who did the excellent Green Room and Blue Ruin.
i saw both, deff check out my letterboxd for my takes on em (not sure i’d do a vid this late), and i am planning to see rebel ridge on plane
Keep up exactly what you're doing sarah :)
Edit: you are very right about how weird cis people are in regards to trans surgery, they think it's appropriate to ask us all sorts of gross questions yet we're the weird ones in that situation. Sucks.
@@pattikakes_zeph 💜💜💜love this comment
You are weird
@@smashbrew2039 Thank you
adding National Anthem to my watchlist!

i love this movie and okay with operations accentuating scenes. cause i think people should firstly begin being okay with people wanting to do something with their bodies.
spoiler

YOU HAVE A FILM CHANNEL TOO
yes lol, maybe i should advertise it on the main channel more
The humor is intentional?
LOVE National Anthem

I truly think you just don’t get the movie at all and have a pre conception of what the movie is but to each’s their own
how so
I didn’t like it at all
Omg get to the point 😭 sorry you’re very nice but you keep going on tangents. Just get to the point 🥲

@ I’m sorry 😔 it was a good review though! Looking forward to more videos
Now I know this movie is gonna be good... I want to see it even more badly
😂dis garbage just got nominated for 11 bafta awards🔥
lmao
@taniacervantesochoa5034 I speak your language, and I've lived in Mexico for 5 years. And what does "understand our music" mean?
LOL
The fact that you only see this movie as a trans movie is the problem….. your seem to be completely disconnected from what is the Mexican culture and how machismo it is. This movie a about a drug lord that’s trans woman and is going against her culture and profession in order to be happy.
This movie is bad from a Mexican feminist perspective, and a feminist born and raised in Mexico tells you so.
I feel like you’re just pigeonholing the trans experience being just one cookie cutter version of what you believe it should be
What a wonderful movie!!
We don’t care if you don’t like it
u cared so little u left a comment
Why watch the video if you dont care?
Not Ironic or irony.
bruh get off the internet you’re coming off like a rabid idiot 😭😭😭
"humanised"
The trans character is literally a deceptive murderous criminal. Dated trope: see Ace Ventura, Silence of the Lambs etc.
"want to erase the past self and rush a process"
That's exactly what the character did. She didn't even try coming out to her wife before faking her death and ditching her and her kids.
This is the most cis thing ive ever read i think
