This lively Divertimento was commissioned by Paul Sacher (1906-1999), the founder and conductor of Basel Chamber Orchestra.
The same man who commissioned the Music for String, Percussion, and Celesta, a few years prior to this. He really got the most out of his commissions, it seems.
And he commissioned the Sonata for two pianos and percussion. So he's responsible for three Bartok masterpieces.
Played the first movement in my third year of high school and it was the most fun I ever had preparing a piece!
Which instrument were you on? I've always wanted to perform with an orchestra, or some kind of instrumental ensemble that isn't a band, but I play piano so there's not really any way to do that

this piece is beautiful to listen to, but a living hell to play:)
Thanks a lot for syncing the score with the music. Very useful!!!
