i bought the 119 in 1980 , my grandson owns it now , it is still going strong .
That’s so cool to hear!
Nice!
I have my grandfather's 110 from the 70's still as good as any modern knife I own.
Buck should have a special classification as a "Family Knife". My Grandpa gave me my first one when I was 8. My dad liked it so much he bought one for himself. Now he's in his 80's and has passed his on to my son. And this "Passing On" is a pretty serious event! For both my son and I getting that knife from our Grandpas really meant a lot to each of us, a wonderful way to remember our Grandpas by but also a "Rite of Passage".
HEY BUCK - HOW ABOUT A "HERITAGE" model??
..
Awesome... Awesome story ..
I had a Buck 119 in 1975, when I was 14. It is a classic knife, even in Germany.
I lost it somewhere at the Lake Konstanz on a fishing trip.
#22aday
Stay safe everybody, and stay blessed.
Greetings from Germany!
I found a buck 119 while snorkeling the Buffalo river. Unfortunately the sheath shrunk when it dried out, but still an awesome find.
Bladehq and I believe Amazon has she’s that you can order for about $15.
@@gideonstactical thanks I will look into it
Found my 119 laying in the snow beside a trail in the Yukon, sans sheath. Found my 105 laying on the ground in northern BC, no sheath. The leather sheaths are available on Amazon.
Great knives for cleaning fish.
If you still have the old sheath , whap the blade in thick plastic and resoak the sheath and slide the knife back in and let it dry again .. this should fix the sheath ..
I still have and utilize three mid 70’s era Bucks. The 440c used back then is far superior (IMHO) to the steel used in Buck’s standard knives beginning during the 80s.
Two were gifts from my parents when I was 10 and eleven. The first was a Buck Personal the other was a Special. The third was a Fillet that was given as payment for helping out at a small sporting goods store.
Love all three of them!
apparently they switched from 440C to 420HC because they were getting complaints from customers about 440C chipping and being too hard to sharpen
I have a lot of knives to choose from when I head out to the woods but I still love my buck 119. My Dad gave it to me when I was 10 years old and I still have it today!
Same. My Dad issued me my first Buck 119 when I was 10 when he ramped up my survival training. I love having the S35VN Pro version
You have a Cool Dad.
Damn i broke mine one of the first few things i was trying to baton. Maybe i was asking too much of it i cant really remember. Just remember the embarrassment of trying to show off this cool knife for some friends and just *ting* snapped at handle.
@@Drippinonthedroopbad distribution of weight on the knife and depends the wood you used. Not to mention use an axe next time. Each tool has its real use, just cause it can doesn’t mean you should
Bought the 105 Pathfinder Pro and liked it so much I bought the 119 Special Pro too. The upgraded steel and handle material are worth it in my opinion. Buck Knives were great back in the 70's when I was a pup, now they are even better. I am amazed every time I use a 119 or a 110 or a 112 or any of the buck classics how great they feel in the hand and how well they get the job done. I've bought a lot of knives in the last 50 years and I keep coming back to Buck. Classic tools steeped in American tradition. Great video. Thanks for sharing the day with us.
I've carried the same Buck 119 for over 20 years... EVERY DAY. I skin out deer , work em up and work in the kitchen with my same Buck 119. I'm glad to see ya share it today. Thats what made me check out ya channel and then Subscribe. Right on... Gods Grace. Deo Vindice. Thanks , Luna.
Thank you for making these films from a country boy live in the city these gets me through the day.
Same here bud.
You cannot go wrong with a Buck for quality and even price. I would think that the only advantage of the S35vn is that it will hold an edge better/longer than 420HC. I haven't had a problem with phenolic being slippery. I wouldn't use a knife with a slippery handle. Thanks for sharing it with us. You make quality videos.
Buck 119, I got this in 1984, my 1st knife i brought for use during my service in the military. Still got the same knife today, but have since replaced the stealth once. Love this classic!
I retired from military in 1985 and wish I had possessed my 119 in 2 tours in RVN. I got it s few years after retirement and it has dressed and skinned lots of animals and never failed me in the woods or desert!
Great video! The 119 is one of my all-time favorite knives, I put one through hell as a kid and a teenager learning and practicing survival skills in south Florida.
Yes Buck Knives..
I have a 119 and others that I've used since 20 years ago. Awesome video by the way
Same here
I like the different format you went with on this video . The 119 is a great a knife to start with the but the Pro model takes it to the next level .
Its awesome to see Buck is starting to step up oh, I was wondering how long it was going to take them to catch up with the times
They still have a long way to go
@@davidlouis1068 What exactly do you mean by that 🤔?.
@@hostilemgtow603 uhhhhh look at their product line...
@@hostilemgtow603 well they still gotta make it a full tang, that’s one thing they gotta work on
@@davidlouis1068 LOL 😂. Damn, you're right LOL 😂.
It's awesome to see a review of it, Thank you! I've always carried buck 110s and the Vanguard in the field. Carried a Crosslock since it came out in 94 all through Highschool (FFA) and College.
Got my buck 119 as my first buck last Christmas in the s35vn version. Best knife I ever owned an holds an crazy edge with the worksharp. Just got to process deer a few back an it didn't need sharpen at all afterwards, plus it carves woods pretty well too. Recommend this as a first knife.
That is awesome they did this for such an iconic knife. I will be buying this knife
I just bought a 124 I will also be getting a new 119 just to add a hollow grind blade is the best
BUCK IS COMING BACK VERY NICELY ON THE MARKET !
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A GREAT BUCK KNIVES COLLECTOR AND USER, SO THIS " UPGRADE " MAKES ME REALLY HAPPY
AND IF I SEE AN UPGRADED BUCK 120 GENERAL ... I BUY IT IMMEDIATELY !!!
Very cool video. Wonderful surroundings and the Buck 119 beautifully staged. 👍🏻🔝
Love the Buck 119 classic the one I have a real classic it was made somewhere in 68/72 by the markings on the blade. Great video nice review. Stay safe my friend
The original version was my first hunting knife. And for the last 15 years I’ve shyed away from buck. They just simplistically are not as good as what I can get from many other companies most especially, cold steel. However I may own that one in the near future. Being that I never carry only one knife. Perhaps I can get a bit of my childhood back LOL. Great video.
I have a 119 that I've been using for 30+years. It has been thru many game dressings thousands of camp chores and has never failed to excell at any task. I might have to pass the old one down and get myself this sweet new one!
Loving Bucks upgraded knives. I picked up the 110+ slim carry with s30v steel a couple months ago, great knife.
I enjoyed the video style. I look forward to seeing more.
THANK YOU for talking about the ease of resharpening this blade! I’ve been considering getting the 119 Pro for a couple weeks, but wasn’t sure the S35VN would fit my needs well. I’ve carried a 420HC 119 almost every day for the last 7 years, and have spent thousands of hours using it. I love it, and have really appreciated how easy it is to resharpen with my pocket stone. It is so good to hear this version can be resharpened the same way!
I have other knives in higher end steels (most specifically, one of my favorite knives is a custom fixed blade in Sleipner at 60HRC) that I don’t use as much as my 420HC 119, as any edge damage or wear that occurs takes absolutely forever to sharpen out. Literally hours. Makes field-sharpening a total chore.
I’ll probably end up getting the S35VN 119 Pro now
My best friend bought me a 119 for my birthday, way back in 1975. I still have it. Might have to pick up this upgraded version, though.
Glad to see that your reviewing more bucks. I am certainly looking forward to your reviewing more, especially some of their new EDC knives.
The buck 119 is one of the my favorite knives I own
The classic fixed blades from Buck have been around so long because they work. A Buck 110 and a 120 were among the first knives I ever bought. The fact that you can pick up a standard 110 and 119 for $35 and $50 respectively makes them a great value. I have more expensive knives and still use Bucks regularly. I use a Buck 102 Woodsman at home in the kitchen and for food prep when I’m camping. They’re great knives for the money.
I bought my 119 in 1987 and have put a lot work on that old knife 🔪 and it still looks good and works like new
Been using a Buck 124 since '85 and have no complaints . I keep hearing everyone talking/complain about beating up their batoning stick on the back edge . It's a stick , you're in the woods , get another baton . The woods are full of them !
I grew up with Buck knives.....it is nice to see them getting into the modern game!
I carry the 110 on my side when camping & hiking, 503 is my edc. Buck's are classic!
I never understood why they chose such slick handle material. I guess it's for cleaning and not getting blood into the pores of the scales. Polished micarta was a choice that's a perfect fit.
About time Buck, now their fans can skin 3 deer before having to sharpen their blades.
I just bought a Benchmade Bushcrafter in s30v which is the same steel just slight toughness difference. I think the steel isn't hard to sharpen at all, it's actually very forgiving stuff polished up amazing.
I had to reprofile that Bushcrafter edge is really broad not my style at all... BUT now that its convexd and polished I LOVE IT.
Very cool video my friend! Love me some Buck Knifes! I have the 110, 110 silm (my EDC) a couple of bantams, 105 with the cocabow grip and the 75th anniversary edition of the 119. Oh yeah, a Buck fillet knife. Great tools 🤠
I like that buck will do these special runs on there knives. “HEY BUCK MABE A FULL TANG 119 LIKE THE 124”
The 119 has a full tang. The older ones did not but Buck started making them with a full tang more recently.
I have a 1960s vintage 119 that was my grandfathers with the old leather holster sheath.still use it still going strong.ill be getting the s35vn version shortly.
Really loved this video!!! Loved the new format and the phenominal content/review. You sold me! I really want that blade😎 God bless you Aaron!!
I love the way you started that fire. Makes me want the out out doors right now.
Love your reviews, man...and this one was no different. Awesome. Like most knife guys, I own quite a few, but will always be a "Buck" guy at heart.
Well, because I am a buck fan and have two 119 specials if I’m doing a multiple day hike/camp and decide to take one of my bucks the 124 frontiersman is always my go to. I rotate through all the knives in my collection but the 124 is almost an EDC for me.
It really is iconic movies, it literally is what I thought all hunting knifes should look like as a kid haha
I’m not a hunter and never considered this as a camp knife but it clearly is capable. I picked up a custom Buck110 with the S35V and can’t wait to take it on my summer trip.
They are a production company. Custom?
@@Apex_grind562 yep. They can make custom knifes with their 110, 112, 119, and 113 models from what I remember. You can customize the handle material and blade steel
You mean S30V?
Beautiful blade, great videography, nice review... as always.
Ordered Buck 119 Special in My of 2021 and got it today July 23rd 2021. This is replacing the one I had in the early 70's that someone took from by Truck when I was in class at school. I had it engraved with my name and PROUD AMEICAN on it. it is even more beautiful than the one I had in the 70's BUT the older one was a gift from my father. It meant a lot more to me.. Great video on using the knife, I'll be camping with mine very soon.
Phenolic is the original trade for what is now micarta today, ie. linen, canvas, paper etc. The original phenolic for the high tech industry, defense, aerospace etc. was graded and had a distinct colored center layer to quickly identify it. Keep up the great videos. I inherited a circa 1972 119 that is NIB condition.
phenolic is micarta ? u just made the buck 119 "tacticool"
Thanks bud. Literally answered every question I had. I just lost my Scandi and was wondering about switching over. 🤟❤️😎
Sorry you lost a blade, but glad to help 👍
Really nice knife. I have the regular one and just recently purchased the 119 Brahma with the leather handle. For some reason a dealer here in Canada had three of them in stock but they weren't listed on his regular online web page. They were probably sitting there for many years. I've been collecting buck knives for a few years from 101 to 124. I have been thinking about picking up the 117 Pro because I recently got the 117 with the black handle and it's really nice. Cheers from Canada.
The Buck 119 is bar far the best belt utility belt knife out there . Before spending $$$$$ on that dream knife practice with the original 119 , for under $50 , best using/training aid for the money .
My butt was getting sore from sitting on the fence buying one of these knives. I have had a few over many many years (since 1982). When I think what I bought my first one for at first I balked. Then I remember when a bottomless cup of coffee went up to .25 cents from .20 c. My first car cost about the same as a mid level mountain bike does today.
So putting things in that kind of perspective I guess this pro version, USA made knife, Mexican sheath isn't really that insane... Yeah I'll buy that unashamedly.
Thanks for the video, Buck owes you one.
Just ordered the 119 Pro. Already received my new 124 Frontiersman. Two great knives. Thanks for video.
Whooo weee! A $190 Buck 119? Well, that 90 degree spine sure got something going on. I just might pick this up.
I remember first picking up the 119 at a martial arts store when I was in high school. I was buying a new gi for Judo class and then I saw that beaut in the glass casing. It was love at first sight. Dang thing was so sharp that it cut through the leather sheath and sliced my hand!
The 119 is really a big game hunting knife. The hollow grind isn’t great for buttoning and the sharp clip point is great to work over joints, etc. But it’s capable of more.
Just processing deer🙄
Man I feel like this upgrade was long overdue but then again they've already done the steel upgrade long ago in S30V and also 5160 which both are phenomenal at edge holding and strength for wood working! Today actually my new BENCHMADE S90V 15002-1 saddle mountain gets here so I can't wait to put that through the paces as it is one of my favorite steel choices
S30V is not tough at all.
Edge holding yes, but for toughnes I'll put my money on the 420HC over the S30V for sure.
Look up the Joe X video on the Buck 120.
Do that with S30V.
No way it holds up that stuff .
Gerber Strongarm , 420HC also.
That's a tough knife.
S30V in Buck 119 or 120 would make it unnecessary weak.
It’s a great knife full stop, bushcraft/camp supreme, great slicer good fire prep knife and that handle makes it a perfect knife, a better knife than a Gerber Strongarm for what I need a knife to be.
Great review. I enjoy my vanguard currently but that 119 pro might be worth the investment.
I broke down precut firewood for a whole weekend with my 119 when my hatchet broke immediately the first time I used it. It took some decent damage was very easy to sharpen back to a working edge
I went all in and bought the entire Pro 100 series set. No regrets whatsoever. I only wish they’d make the 124 Pro too.
I noticed a lot of ppl talking smack on the winkler knife review U did .. IMO that’s not an ideal knife for survival wilderness situations But it is a great knife for carry This 119 pro is however , a great outdoors knife So w that said , a folding saw, a hatchet, the 119 pro and a winkler on the hip Would cover all cutting needs for a weekend camping trip 🏕️
I like my Buck 119, but the handle feels a bit weird to me. It’s almost to thick up by the guard. Still a great knife. Thanks for the video.
I've been wanting to add this classic to my knife collection. looks like now's the time!
I used to have a the Buck 119, I sold it to my neighbor for $50 years ago. This upgraded one looks quite nice. I recently got the Buck Ground Combat Knife, it's an awesome Blade as well. Buck is really stepping it up.
Aaron always has the most informative videos made where they should be made, outdoors. I watched a Cedric and Ada video where s30vn outperformed 420 3:1.
Thank you so much really appreciate it. Cedric does an awesome job and I use him regularly as a trusted source for edge retention on steel.
Pity it's nowhere near as though 😊
With regards to the finn-all-ick grips, a historic field trick I was taught by a Vietnam veteran: coat in glue, dip in sand.
Great video; curious to see if there's enough of a market for Case to upgrade some of their classic hunting line as well. Stay well.
Great video! I bought the S30vn. It's awesome! Also got one in d2 steel. They make great camp knives. I bought a Buck 124 too. I would like to note that that one is full tang and bigger But not too much heavier. Might be one to request to test in the future. Atb Sean
That’s a pan awesome knife! 👍 You have an awesome dog Aaron!
Finally I bet it feels really nice. I really want to see a TPE handle. That’s what I would buy. Super grippy. But not too rough.
Thanks for the review, I just purchased the Buck 105+ Pro, love the micarta. Thinking I need to get the 120+ General , it’s a one up to the 119 👍😎♥️
Just got the 102 woodsman in this configuration can’t wait to field dress a deer with it this fall
I've done all of my deer with one. Great knife!
A brilliant knife
In my experience (no jokes about age, please) Buck knives are fine HUNTING knives. By that, I mean they are built, desinged and suited for hunting applications. Skinning, gutting, processing. These knives are not and weren't intedned for utility, bushcraft, survival, etc, unless specifically stated so.
That said, they are my go-to for deer and smaller game as well as camp kitchen chores. Buck 105, 113 and 112 owner.
I like the micarta, good move.
I have the standard Buck 119. The Buck 102 looks much the same, but smaller overall. I use the Buck 102 as my "Bird & Trout" knife.
I like all these pro fix blades. As for the price I would be happy with the green Micarta handle and there reg steel. I want all of them esp the pathfinder, 119, and the skinner
Love the knife and review! Will definitely put this on my future knife purchase list. Dont tell my wife....🤫😁
Jarki pukko or mora is a good match for those that may be new.s35 is a beautiful steel tho easy to sharpen and good longevity
U say upgraded but the standard 420 hc is perfect razor sharp egde
Interesting clip a little known fact, the buck 110 was popular in Vietnam. But the 119 was there as well in combat. Tho it was private purchased or outside issued gear. But avaliable I have my fathers.
Very cool!
Cool knife. I just don't like the hollow grind. Wish Buck would offer different grinds.
I have a realy old 119 and love it! its a classic.
Thanks for the video!👍
got my first 119 back in like 73 my first fixed blade hunting knife from my grandfather after killing my first buck . on my third one now could not imagine going into the woods hunting camping or for any other reason without it
Excellent video. Lost my Buck 60+ years ago. With this video and. buck back on track, going to pick up one.
What a fun review! Love the backyard pocket knife torture test vids, but this format is perfect for a camp knife review.
i plan for mine do do the fine work like feathering, cutting fibers, and skinning/cleaning fish. i will use my esee for batoning or all of the other heavier work if i dont have my hatchet. but this i also plan to have as my edc aswell.
Sounds great!
Love that they have upgraded to a super steel and modern handles. Absolutely outstanding.
That would look great with a brass gard and pomble!
I enjoyed this laid back style of video, but I also like the more formal reviews. Nice to see Buck using better materials!
Have you looked atyhe buck 124 ? That's a nice one
I've had mine for about 3 years. It has a micarta handle and their traditional 420HC blade. It's a beast. I have big hands. I wear a size 15 ring and It's hard to find gloves big enough to wear, and this knife is a handful. Funny thing is, my favorite knife is the 102.
Good job on this review.I have a Buck 102 Woodsman since 1985.My Brother gave me to as a Christmas present, still going strong.I am going to take a serious look at this knife.👍
I recently acquired an HK5 from BPS Knives ($30, Amazon) and have to say it is my all time favorite camping knife. I have a Buck 119, and it's a good knife, but the HK5 is just awesome. And it's very affordable. Full tang. Leather sheath with dangler. 90 degree ground spine. It's a lot of knife for that price. Highly recommend you check them out.
Hallo Guys.
Your food burned, if I'm not mistaken right!!!🤔🤔🤔 In the future, put at least 1.deciliter of water in the food, and at least two potatoes and mushrooms!!!🤔😉😉 And a little salt, the sausage can stay there, it will be tastier afterwards!!!😉😉😉
Otherwise, the Buck 119 is good, I have it.
And another question, And what you do you say, about the classic, and opening knife, Buck Kalinga year of manufactur 2008-10???😉😉😉You have it him???🤔😉😉😉
I wish you happy good rest day.
I think I pain US$20 for my first Buck SPECIAL five decades ago. Broke the tip throwing it. Still a good knife after regrinding the tip.
My class in the Finnish armed forces chose the 119x as an all rounder. Had another, Finnish fighting knife for fighting.
I've owned several. Great looking knife, very lightweight. Not a great chopper. Hand guard is great, but it can get in the way. They are twice as expensive as the last time purchased one. I still have the sheath from the last one. I think because they are so expensive now, I will not get another, but may consider the 124 Frontiersman or whatever is called. It's got the straight back, but the back is still bevelled the last inch or so to get point into joints. Better for batoning. I carry a Cold Steel EDC in the woods now, along with my Victorinox Sentinel, single hand clip, which is a phenomenal lightweight pocket knife /multi-tool though it's stuff action is solid and safe, it's slow to deploy and fold and more difficult with single hand than most folding kickbacks now days, but it is quality, and will not fail and with good dexterity, can be operated fairly quickly with either hand. I dig the Cold Steel 7" Bushman as well. Had to customize the sheath to make it work right, and the knife itself must be customized with grip material, maybe a wood or metal handle plug, maybe a lanyard which can quick secure it to a cane end for an instant scythe to clear a big camp fast. The Bushman can do allot, but you'll want to file the back some for fire steel striking. Also the Bushman is cheap and unbreakable, holds an edge just fine, yet is easy to sharpen. I don't believe I'd pay all the money for the new pro Bucks, if I do go for another 119 S, it would be the red handled Micarta. That way it would be good looking and more unique. The 119S is a sharp looker with style, and so lightweight also. If I had more money, and more confidence I could keep whatever I have, I'd invest in some of the Bucks, but more than I can carry on my back is more than I'm likely to be able to keep, way my life in this wonderful fucking country has thus far gone.
Just purchased this 119 pro. It’s most likely the last fixed blade I’m going to buy. Hopefully the S35VN is worth the price tag
Another excellent video on what looks like a great knife !
"Working closely with Crucible Industries, Chris Reeve Knives has played an essential role in developing CPM S30V, S35VN, and S45VN, powdered blade steels formulated particularly for edge-retention, toughness and corrosion resistance."
Scandi grind would work a lot better than the buck. $15-30 morakniv or hultafors.
I still have my buck 119 from 10yrs ago i broke the handle and put it in a survival knife handle from harbor freight! The aluminum handle one with the kit in the handle! Fits perfect and wont break again! lol
I’m going to have to pick me up a 119
Just ordered myself one, I got an origional 119 from my uncle for my 11th bday which I gave to one of my nephews on his 12th bday
