- Words can not describe some of the saddest days in the history of our country. This is shown in 3 parts leading up to the ceremonies at Arlington Cemetery and a final tribute to John F. Kennedy at the end of part 3.
Jackie Kennedy's behaviour during those horrible days was a gift to the American people.
At 2:35, when they play "Hail to the Chief", Jackie breaks down because JFK loved that song when they played it for him.
To see her finally break down after hearing “Hail to the Chief” breaks my heart.. :( she went through so much in so little time. First losing a child and then seeing her husband killed right in her arms. May she Rest In Peace
It's obviously moot 59 years later, but couldn't they have waited to have the funeral after John Jr's birthday?
A 3 yr old would not know. He did not remember his Father he said later. THAT is sad.
Why did this happen to such a wonderful person ?
✝️🛐🙏🏽
When they start playing Hail to the Chief, and you see Jackie lose it, that is the saddest. :(
I saw her also.......it made me cry......almost sobbing. So sad and heartbreaking even after all these years.
no kidding. if that didn't tug at your heart then you don't have one.
campbellka She was so strong so boss so amazing omg 😔😔😔😔 there are ways to do things killing is never an option 😔
@@53Betsy Oh I agree especially John Jr. saluting the casket of a man he would never grow up knowing and to think it was his 3rd birthday as well. I so lose it when I see that
JFK loved hail to the chief too :’(
I remember this day very well. I found out at school JFK was murdered. Still this many years later the pain in my gut is wrenching when I watch this. I wish Bobby had lived. He would have been a great president.
@Mr Krabs Says The Money Is always right! Very rude comment!
@The_Beef Boss Films people were etheir young and are in there 50s or 60s it was long ago but some are still alive secret service agents hill is alive still the one that got on the back of the car that was very unnecessary to comment that. Its rude.
Can you imagine??? For the entire world...this was "THE PRESIDENT"....but for Mrs Kennedy, however flawed....this was her relationship. Clearly...she and JFK had a complex relationship....but she loved him. Who is to judge? All these decades later...people still speculate about EVERY detail of their marriage. I ask: who's relationship isn't complex? Can you imagine the ENTIRE WORLD FOR 50 YEARS trying to analyze every detail of your relationship? She was 32 yo. Is it any wonder she NEVER spoke about it till the day she died???
A grateful nation, will never forget and always honor you.
Rest In Peace, JFK.
2:40 is extraordinarily sad. You can actually see what looks like Mrs. Kennedy breaking down and crying in public.
I mean why would it be sad her husband was shot and she her husband's brains blew out
I mean she saw her husband's brains blew out
Anthony Orr I meant why wouldn't it be sad
+Anthony Orr Yes I understand what you mean. I just meant, Jackie never broke down in public and cried like that. She was admired for her courage and grace through out her life, when you see real moments like that, it's full of emotion.
What is The Song that they Played
Hail to the Chief in this clip gives me goosebumps...
I remember when the principal of my school announced JFK had been killed. We along with our teacher wept and wept.
+A Skeptic I went to a Catholic school. We stood to pray, and our teacher said we could kneel if we wanted to. We did. For Catholic children in 1963, his murder was unthinkable.
They had to tell us before we left school because they had to let us know that there would be no school on Monday due to the funeral. But it was several hours after the shooting before we were actually told in our classrooms.
Jackie was an extremly strong woman, I could only imagine what she was like when she was alone and able to break down... god bless her and God bless the entire Kennedy Family...
I will never forget those drums as long as I live
Hey just checking you
Jackie had asked that his funeral replicate that of Abraham Lincoln. They honored her wishes.
I was in the third grade at Kings Grant Elementary in Virginia Beach, VA. I was devastated when the Naval Hymn started to play. It still moves me today--almost 57 years later.
Me too. It always will
I was a teen in high school that sad day. Truth, freedom, peace and prosperity would never be the same. Im 61 today and when as I look at this video I still get tears. Not just for the kennedy family, but for our nation. I understand the snare springs were loosened on the drums to give a load pounding beat that would forever be etched in the minds of those that watch the 3 day procession from the capital to Arlington. Im glad I lived to see JFK, as our president. He truly inspired me.
I was a freshman in high school when we heard of it--To this day I cannot hear The Navy Hymn without tearing up
2:40
When you see Jacky loose it... She had to live with the memory of her husband dying In front of her...
Not only was a sad but boy was it brutal
I am sure she wished that the Oswald or whoever pulled the trigger had killed her too.
@@KillerofWestoids you're sick
@@KillerofWestoids I mean she did say “I would rather have lost my life, than have lost Jack.” But I don’t really blame her, I mean it was her husband and they both did love each other. I wish things were different
I was only 5 years old, and don't really remember the day of the assassination, but I do remember the funeral. I remember I wanted to go outside and play, but my mother wanted me to stay inside and watch the funeral. I did, but was not very happy. I was to young to appreciate what a President was, or even what death or funerals were all about, but my mother was insistent that this was important so I watched. She was very sad, I remember that too. I'm glad now she made me watch.
I read how President Kennedy really loved hearing Hail to the Chief. It was ironic it was played while he was laid to rest under tragic circumstances. I'll never forget watching his funeral on TV when I was ten. God keep you and your family Mr. President.
here after watching Jackie movie...
Me too.

Steve… thank you for bringing this to us!
That’s how hail to the Chief was meant to be played.
Michael S what makes hail to the chief played in the 21st century when a us president dies not as good
Zachary Kim the musicians are worse in the 21st century. coming from a musicians standpoint anyway
YES IT IS
America lost it's innocence... a sd day for America and the world
Valor and dignity is what Jackie displayed. She showed what she was made of.
Jackie Kennedy gave the world and this country the best that she could have had to offer and she was a great first lady and she
handled herself well and JFK was one of the finest presidents we ever had and now fast forward to 2017 the former presidents and first ladies would be rolling over in their grave now! Sad what this country has become!
May President Kennedy always rest in eternal peace.
This made me cry.
Rest In Peace, Mr.President. We won't forget you. That you made for the world, always will be the best memory of you.
Thank you for uploading this. I remember on TCM there was the same footage with no narrator years ago. It was very surreal.
Rest in peace JFK
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I was 14 years Old and as most people alive then we will never forget those Days
this was awesome, thank you for posting this, my grandfather, my uncles, dad and mom, know the exact time, of that terrible, when they heard the news that kennedy was shot. they know where they were as well. my Granddad said he knew of two dates, Pearl Harbor, and Kennedy Assasination. so glad he had demintia so he could not remember a third terrible day, 9/11/01. I think two tagedies in a life time is enough.
thank you again for posting this,
Blessed Be.
Best US President in history,,he is wise man,,,im Indonesian but im crying watching this video😢
If he still here there is no country in the world put revenge to US
R.I.P. my beloved President.
Bummy, there is reams of evidence linking Ruby to the mob. Read the HSCA. There is a huge amounts of information showing the connection of Ruby, who early in his life worked for Chicago mobster, Sam Giancana. He also visited Santos Trafficante or at least his associates, when he was imprisoned briefly in Cuba by Castro after Castro closed down Trafficante's casinos.
Tom Calarco And there are reams of information not linking him.
Ridiculous ... anyone who runs a strip show and writes numbers is connected to the Mob -- have you had any experience with such things. My best friend's father was a small-time bookie and they were all connected to the Mob -- you couldn't operate otherwise in those days.
And there is not reams of evidence not linking him. Anything that alleges that is disinformation.
Tom Calarco Your best friends father. Wow that is some info you have there Tom. There were thousands of hours of taped phone calls and investigation Tom. No connection to the Mob. You haven't told me yet Tom. What theory do you believe?
Not true, they tied numerous phone calls in the weeks prior to the assassination -- this is in the HSCA report -- from Ruby to known mobsters. I was just making an analogy with my friend's father. Jack Ruby was in the mob from his youth when he was an enforcer in Chicago.
Some reacted differently, of course, to this act of evil. My reaction was, I was 12 years old ... and just playing and having fun with neighbor kids. It didn't really hit me until they played "Eternal Father, Strong to Save" while carrying the casket up the steps. I lost it. That was the moment innocence was lost. Evil winning victories was no longer a half hour show of Gunsmoke. The President was dead. Was there any hope left in the world? Took me a long time to affirm - that there truly is. It took me a long time to realize no matter what the level of darkness is, light will always extinguish it. God is always good. Sometimes hard to see. But He does His best work in our darkest hours.
My heart goes out to Jackie, this is hard to watch. God rest her soul
Rest and know you will allways be loved
I was 13 at 68 I can still hear the drums!
I too can hear those drums and the wheel of that caison.
Exactly. That's when I lost it, watching Jackie lose it when they played "Hail to the Chief". 47 years ago and we're still not over it.
wow, my own mother was just a child when this happened, but watching this was incredibly sad, knowing the full story ! I didn't get the pleasure of experiencing JFK myself, but my mother's fond memories are enough to make me feel I have. I hope Mr. Kennedy, Jackie O, and little Johnny are dancing in heaven together!
On a media coverage standpoint, I really like the minimal commentary from the VoiceOver. Just simple, respectful, professional monologue without the requisite insincere disingenuous hollow crocodile years we get from media personalities today. Who are more interested in appearing to be sadder than they really are in a transparent attempt to offer empty empathy with their viewers.
R.I.P JFK :(
5:09 is the saddest. I was Caroline's age when I saw my father murdered in front of me. Was there for the funeral and his burial. Hardest thing Ive dealt with.
fuck that sucks, I am sorry to hear that.
So sorry. Hope you are doing well. God bless
0:23 my grandpa Argus "Ranger" Fitzgerald is the man in uniform right beside Jackie and the kids. The one to the right you see the best. From Texas, he was a great man. May he and my grandmother rest in peace. Happy birthday Patricia Fitzgerald (my grandmother, his wife) They loved each other very much. They met in DC.
I was 8 when John died, then there was Bobby, then there was Martin. The 60's had some sad times.
May this great man always lay in eternal peace my grandpa was six years old a women ran in the store and said preisdent Kennedy has been shot and they just started squaling their eyes out
+Anthony Orr
you must be young then.
This is the FIRST picture or film I have ever seen of jackie crying when they play hail to the chief...
AmberWaves444 - Thanks for this presentation. For those who might be interested there is a book out right now entitled "Letters to Jackie: Condolences from a Grieving Nation." It is a compilation of letters sent to her over the period of a 1 1/2 after her husband's death. It takes you back to that time and resurrects old feelings for thos of us who lived it and conveys to those who weren't arournd then what it was like to experience JFK's Presidency and his tragic passing.
I watched most of all of this on tv as it was happening live. I wept and wept as sadness poured from my soul.
Nearly 47 years later, my heart still breaks for President John F. Kennedy and his family. Lost Jackie Kennedy in 1994 and John F. Kennedy, Jr. in 1999. All of America's heart was broken during those uncertain and tragic days of November 1963.
I was 16 and in high school. So long ago, but still etched forever in my memory. I was in high school, and JFK was one of my hero's...for who wouldn't have liked his words when he said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". They inspired me, to go out and work for the common good of the country.
JFK = No Vietnam
the generals killed him so they could manipulate lbj who was more trusting then jfk
Maybe lee killed him because he opposed vietnam war i think
Also Eisenhower started the thing
Steve Forbes - Thank You!
I think at 2:37 is the only time they show Jackie break down and cry. I heard stories she broke down at the Mass while they played "Ave Maria." I think that was their wedding song. Its amazing how she was able hold her composure in the public eye like that
That Dirge Cadence at; 100 Steps-Per-Minute, is Unforgettable even after the Passage of these 50 Years. For those who ever played Drums, it's just alway's fresh upon rehearing.....
The end of our innocence as a nation. Rest In Peace Mr. President
"Eternal Father, Strong to Save", also known as "The Navy Hymn".
i was 8 yrs old then. this still brings me to tears
you will be missed jfk you will be in our hearts
@GwenTwentyTen I couldn't agree more with your comments. All of them, but especially with "we all miss you so dearly."
Very sad i remember watching this on tv with my parents i was only 7 years old.
I just watched Parkland (2013) I cried like a baby when JFK was confirmed dead in the hospital.. And I cried when Oswald's brother Robert nearly begged the journalists in Lee's funeral for helping to lift the casket.. I'm not even American.. R.I.P JFK
In school the next day, our teacher introduced the word ASSASINATION. She went on to explain what it is.
What dark days for our country. I was barely 3 months old then.
The world stopped on November 22, 1963 and this country has never been the same since. We only had him for such a short time and what we could have had will never been known and we are much less for it.
I was the same age as Caroline....(well, I still am). Most people 30 & over then, are gone now.
that is what I like about America
even in time of chaos
we are and always will be united
As the uncle of a six year old girl, 4:57 - 5:24 where Jackie and Caroline step forward to kiss the coffin is what causes me to lose it. I wasn't even alive when this happened.
So sad. Lost her husband and father of her young children so tragically and violently right before her eyes.
You are right. Arlington cemetery is his final resting place and that is just over the river from Washington DC and is in Virginia.
Lyndon enjoyed every bit of this
@jg24fan06
The tune is called, Eternal Father Strong to Save. It is also known as The Navy Hymn.
Its an emotional thing to watch. Was not alive, when Kennedy was President, or assassinated, but I miss everyday. He is my idol. I am only 32, but I love the Kennedy Family. Makes me sad, what they've gone through. It was a sad awakening, and we have not ever recovered. 10 Presidents, after JFK, we've had leaders good or bad. Things went bad, and out of control, then you had Malcolm X assassinated, Civil Rights, Protest of Vietnam, drugs, hippees, TET Offensive, two assassinations of Dr. King and JFK's little brother, Senator Robert Kennedy. Good way to end the 1960's, was moon landing, which was JFK's dream, then you had Kent State, Watergate Break-In Scandal, which had Nixon, resign in disgrace, so in my opinion, things were just a disaster, after JFK's assassination. Vice President Agnew resigned in disgrace. Now the country is like the 1960's and 1970's. I would have wept so hard, if I was alive, when Kennedy was assassinated. Caroline and John Jr. Images makes you so sad. Caroline is the only left, and keeps her fathers spirit alive, and well. RIP JFK, your gone, not forgotten.
I was only 5 and I still remember being at my grandmothers and she was crying at the news and so was I because I could see my grandmother crying not knowing the significance of this event.
thank you
2:37 is very sad to watch. Jackie for a brief and only moment, seems like she is breaking down and crying. How sad.
I thought RFK did a good job as a brother at this funeral, staying close to Jacqui.
tis was the sadest day for the usa
Nothing spookier (to me, anyway) than funeral drums. Scares the shit out of me; I don't think I'll be able to sleep now that I've watched this.
is that Gregory Peck narrating? I remember him narrating one of the 4 days in November documentaries awhile back.
2:40 I feel so bad for jackie she loved JFK so much
I was in second grade when this happened. It was the first event I can remember happening outside my immediate daily life. Still, at the time I was mainly ticked that all the Saturday morning cartoons had been pre-empted. It wasn't until later that I began to understand it.
0:32 Jackie stands there in shock in her mind
Cause I can tell
She can't believe it happened. I would've reacted the same way.
Black and white makes it look so eerie and crisp. A fairy tale gone wrong.
Jfk was the one who freed martin luther king from jail black people this should be your favorite president
+Alex Vargas
lol get over yourself.
4:14
lookinq at this and seeinq millions and millions of people cryinq for one person make you realize that John F. Kennedy really did leave a qreat leqacy on America && In everyone's hearts. i can't even imaqine how the whole country felt . how the kennedy family felt ! watchinq this really makes you want to a better person, so maybe someay you could be somewhat recoqnized like President Kennedy . ♥ ♥
A first lady of great dignity. It was the only time she broke down during the whole time.
No, it's Richard Basehart, the admiral from the tv show Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. He also did some narration at the 1980 or 84 summer olympics in los angeles.
I wasnt around when kennedy was shot...my parents were not big kennedy supporters however, my mom to this day still says its was one of the most saddest days in history.
what's the music at 4:15?
AMP09FH “Eternal Father, Strong to Save.” It’s the naval hymn of the Royal Navy and sailors around the world identify themselves with it. JFK was an avid sailor so it’s fitting they played it here.
I wasn't even alive in 1963 ( born 8 years later), but this is still very sad to watch.
RIP JFK. We forever miss you. You achieved what no president after you could and future presidents ever will
I remmber this
The Navy Hymn is too sad. How Jackie could even walk, she was in such shock.
Heart breaking 💔💔
I cry :(
"The unnamed mourners come; for there has been a death in the family." - May we again find such unity borne of something other than tragedy
