As a Cats fan that was the perfect grand final. So many getting involved in the scoring, Selwood, De Koning, Parfitt, Close, Stengle. Heart break for Holmes who was a big reason for Geelong's success this year. Well done Cats!

Congratulations to the Geelong footy club, they have played out an incredible season not only this year but for countless of other years but could not quite get the result home a number of times. However, this season the cats were able to provide their best footy throughout the whole season this year and proven that they were the best side this year. Congratulations on Joel Selwood for an exceptional career with playing off in his 40th AFL final and for his leadership on and off the ground. (Coming from a Richmond fan)

@J G Soccer is a European game. Of course it is going to be one of the most popular sports if most of the countries in the world were colonised and invaded by these Europeans. The cultures and sports of these nations were destroyed and millions of people were killed to make way for the European culture and it’s game, not such a “beautiful game” now isn’t it.
Australian Football was a game originally invented by our First Nation’s people which was called “Marn Grook”. Eventually the game would be noticed by the Europeans settlers and it would be shaped into the beautiful game that it is today.
If soccer was really that powerful as you thought it was, it would’ve already been the number one sport long ago in the 1800’s-1900’s. However the Australian people didn’t want to follow the European game of football, why would they want to if the Australian game of football was more exciting, action packed and not overly repetitive (unlike soccer).
Soccer theoretically should have been number 1 long ago, besides the nation who invaded and colonised the Great Southern Land invented the bloody game. But the power of Australian Football withstood the European game due to the uniqueness of the sport and the excitement that it attracted from the Australian public. If you ask me, I find it pretty embarrassing that the nation who invented soccer couldn’t make the sport the number one game in it’s own colony!
Fast forward to today, Australian Football is at the best it has been in its lifetime in terms of popularity across Australia. Did you know that 1 in every 23 Australians are a member of an AFL club? Meanwhile, the A-League gets less supporters to its games than the NRL and the national soccer team has only played in one World Cup Semi Final in it’s 100 history. Soccer may be the number 1 participated sport in Australia, however that is because the other sports that are available to play in Australia are more physical and demanding. Rugby is a very physical sport where only the strongest and better body types can play, Australian Football is not as physical but requires more stamina and skill which can be tough for new players who haven’t played the sport as a kid/teenager.
I remember hearing that people thought that soccer was going to be the number one sport in the 80’s. That never happened. You’re claiming that soccer is going to be number one in 2050? Have a look at your sport’s history in Australia bud. The national team is an embarrassment, the A-League lacks fans, the sport is just too simple and boring compared to AFL.
Don’t try persuade me that the Socceroos will do better in the future, they won’t. Academies and “professional” regional soccer clubs in Australia cost way too bloody much anyways. The talent pool is only limited to the rich. Most of the most famous soccer players came from slums, poor neighbourhoods or some average neighbourhood. The only players you see coming from rich households are the ones who are the sons of famous soccer players. Australia’s real soccer talent is being blocked from being allowed to show off their skills to the nation’s top teams and selectors because of their socioeconomic status. Why should people try to become soccer players if it’s too bloody expensive to even try to become one? It would be much cheaper to become an AFL player or an Olympian.
Soccer doesn’t deserve to be Australia’s number one sport and it never will. Australian Football has a proud history in Australia that soccer can’t compare to. It’s a rich man’s sport in Australia and if you’re not willing to pay the big bucks just to have a shot, you’ll never make it anywhere in soccer in Australia.
To answer your spam, soccer will never become number 1 in Australia. It simply doesn’t deserve to. AFL is a game for everyone and does not discriminate against your socioeconomic status and is an open playing field for those who have the skills and determination to become a true AFL professional.

What's there to say about Geelong? Everything has been said. Elite year, miles ahead of the rest. GF performance was clinical. Reward for all the work they've put on. Incredible coach and coaching staff. Adjusted their game style, recruited well, see value in players that are unwanted, have pride in having older players, impeccable culture, humble club. One of the oldest lists, been told "too old, too slow", and yet smashed a younger side by 81, one of the biggest GF margins in AFL history. There are endless things you can say about the club.

    • @OldFossil
      @OldFossil Год назад +4

The have been solid, consistent contenders for 15 years straight. I don't think any club can beat that and Selwood has been there the whole time. I also reckon Geelong have had the most intergenerational star players, all time greats, in that time. This helps!

This GF reminded me alot of the 2014 GF when the Swans also got demolished by Hawthorn at the time. It played out in a somewhat similar fashion. We have witnessed some spectacular close fought GF’s of recent years but lately I feel alot of them have been so heavily one-sided that for the neutral fan it creates a dour contest, it feels like some teams mentally get phased by the occasion, they panic & are in shock before the bounce of the ball & they absolutely get trumped by the opposition.
This years GF, last years GF, 2019, 2017, 2015, 2014, and not to forget 2007 have been complete bloodbaths.

"Too old, Too slow, Too good" said one spectator's banner in reply to a newspaper headline. This match proves that anticipation (of where the ball is going to be) is the key skill.
Time warp: Two of Carlton's 1980s premiership stars looked like they were slow motion replays: Robbert Klomp & Jon Dorotich.
The moral: Start going early, and you'll arrive at the ball before the fast runners.

Sorry I'm late, but I'm sick at the moment, so here I am, finally. What a smashing! I thought this was going to be a close one, but Geelong were too classy for Sydney. Hungrier, older list, but not slower, the Cats were on top after the first goal was kicked and did not look back since. Three of the previous four Grand Finals have ended in smashings (Richmond won by 89 in 2019, Melbourne won by 74 in 2021 despite even trailing by as much as 19 in the third quarter and now Geelong won by 81 in 2022). This was the best ending for Cats fans and players where in contrast to Sydney, their dream quickly disintegrated into their worst nightmare. Geelong didn't risk Max Holmes, but the Swans took a gamble on Sam Reid and... well, look what happened. Sydney probably should've used Tom McDonald. Tom Papley was laughing the day before the big dance but after the match ended, his team's performance was a joke. If Collingwood had beaten Sydney in the Preliminary Final rematch (since they lost to the Swans in 2012), how much of a fight would the Magpies have put up? Would the result have changed? I know Pies fans are fuming right now. Isaac Smith has signed on for Geelong after winning the Premiership and Lance Franklin signed on for Sydney at the start of Grand Final week. Should Buddy have waited until afterwards? His performance was atrocious, not even a goal scored on the big day. This is Geelong's first Premiership in eleven years and Sydney's third Grand Final loss in a nine-year span.
Geelong players and fans can celebrate now, but don't party too hard, you don't want to suffer a Premiership hangover like Hawthorn did in 2009, Bulldogs in 2016 and Richmond in 2021.
Sydney cancelled their live events in the wake of their Grand Final hell, just like they did in... was it 2014 or 2016?

    @joshscott2628 Год назад +1

Was a bit disappointed on how polarising the result was given how close the entire top 8 was throughout the season, I remember 1st and 9th only being 8 points apart on the ladder at one point, one of the best seasons I've seen in a while. Still though, I'm a Geelong supporter so I can't say I'm shattered by the result, glad we finally got one after being in the top flight consistently.
