    I think the 2024 draft was decent for SF. Puni is good. Mustapha, Green, Pearsall, and Gurrendo all showed potential to be good even if they aren't quite there yet. If those 4 develop, it will be a nice draft.

    It's coaching, Shanahan has had a comparatively bad year as a playcaller and defensively the scheme was too vanilla, too predictable, too few adjustments. Coaching was the structural issue that plagued the team this year, everything else - as bad as it has been- could have been overcome if the product on the field had been structurally sound.

    Signing Brock does NOT mean they can’t extend other players or sign FA. Even at $55mill+ a year they still have room. Next year Brock will still only cost about $1million even with an extension. And the 1st year of that extension(2026) will likely be a cap hit below $20million a year.
    That leaves plenty of space to sign Greenlaw, Huff, extend kittle, possibly a FA OL or DL. They need a good draft for sure. Picks 1-3 need to be impact players in year 1.

    What? The injuries for the two teams are not comparable. Offense wins the regular season, and Detroit has virtually its entire offense intact. Instead, Detroit's injuries were on defense. SF, in contrast, has its two best players (LT and RB) and its best WR hurt for much of the season.

    Sam, imagine the Lions lose Gibbs for the season and then lose say Brown for a month. They wouldn’t be close to a 14-2 team. Context is useful if you are comparing injuries.

      Exactly, the difference between the lions and 9ers injuries is the 9ers lost the top players to injury. Lions lost huch and Monty, but the rest of their injuries were all on defense and just middling players. And now their D sucks. The 9ers lost their best player in CMC, the two more top 5 players on Offense in Trent and BA. AND they entered the year without two of their top 5 players on Defense in Greenlaw and Huff, the lost Hargreaves, and lost Bosa and Ward for a month each. Of their top 5 of D only Warner played all year and that was on a broken ankle!

      The Lions are the worst defense in the league over the last month, due to them finally running out of options, other than FAs and waiver wires. That side of the ball, isn't overcoming anything right now.
      The 9ers have more games missed by pro-bowlers than any other team, and it's from far more pivotal positions.

But even more than that Dan has a coach on his staff, Dave Fipp, who does know how to coach a kicker. The Lions value special teams and put resources into that area with coaches and players. That is something the 49ers need to change if they want to get better.

    You can do that with nearly every team in every game, flip a couple key plays and change the whole outcome of a game, of a season. Look at Chicago, an objective dumpster fire, yet applying the above logic, changing just 4 plays and they're 8-8 with wins over the Commies, Vikings, Lions and Packers and going into week 18 are fighting for a playoff spot. The entire narrative around the Bears does a complete 180. Or the Packers, change just 4 plays and they are a 15 win team with a sweep over the Vikings, split with the Lions and victory over the Eagles, suddenly the Packers are the unstoppable juggernaut of the NFC.
    But this isn't how football works, teams are what their record says they are. Change a play here and change a play there doesn't work at all because every other team can say the same thing, failing or succeeding in those few critical plays are what separates the bad from the good and the good from the great.

    • @haagenslash5963
      @haagenslash5963 2 дня назад

      I agree with you, but the thought experiment does put into better perspective how close these teams actually are. Our monkey brains would tell us that a 12 win team is three times as good as a 3 win team, but that difference is at most like 25% better. These margins are much thinner than the comparative win totals would suggest. That's also why I'm not a fan of top 10s. There's a clear top 5ish and bottom 5ish. Clear outliers. But that middle twenty is messy as all hell. The difference between number 20 and number 9 is like a handful 50/50 plays.

By the wk4 all ofense on the chiefs was injured.Lions had injuries in last 3 wks cause their head coach squized them. Completely diferent than the 9ers.They drafted very good receiver this year,even shot,he played good later in the year.
