- No idea what that engine was. It was pretty chaotic here. There was another railfan there too.
That person that was standing next to the pedestrian gate and the one that yelled up to me was my gram! Both her and my dad yelled up we had power back after not having it for 2 days!

The F40PH in phase three paint is and will always be my favorite diesel locomotive ever!
Both engines looked cool, the modern front one, and the anniversary one in the back.
sadly the leading one isnt modern, the dumb chargers are taking over
1:23 That's an EMD F40PH, or at least partially
The F40's were Amtrak's mainstay locomotive from the mid-70's to the mid-90's.
Once the GE Genesis locomotives took over, the F40's were either scrapped, donated to other railroads, or converted into Cab Control Units (Like 90406 here)
These units have no engine, but their controls are connected to the locomotive at the front for push-pull service.
didn't they also add a roll up door on the side to load and unload baggage?
@@jewllake I think it's on the other side, away from the camera.
It would have been smart to put a HEP generator in them so that it takes the load off of the lead locomotive.
@@shauntakata1762this one has them…and the ones without are on trains that don’t need them
@@NJCommutrthe doors are on both sides, this one was rebuilt without doors
Powered or not, the F40 is still my favorite.
It's an F40PH NPCU (non powered control unit)
Thanks for telling me! I have always wondered what those engines were called!
@@RailfanRXR this looks like it might’ve been the locomotive that was on the exhibit train Amtrak ran for its 40th anniversary
Hence, why it says 1971 to 2011
awesome catch! the legendary F40
Always love seeing F40's Even if it's only a cab car now. Better than meeting the scrapper's torch.
I love seeing a phase 3 F40 in service, even as an NPCU. It just looks so classic.
0:42 I love the person jumping at the sound of the whistle.
That was my gram!
@@RailfanRXR My best to your Gram!
This has to be one of the coolest trainvideos I've seen in years. Even if it's non-powered to see an f40ph is AWESOME
Cabbage alert! You lucky dog
It’s still an NPCU, but unlike other NPCUs, it has an HEP generator.
I love my Amtrak!!! I have tons of the ho scale turboliners from the 70’s!!
Excellent video really enjoyed watching your video keep up the great work looking forward to seeing more great content from you soon thanks again and have a awesome weekend
Thanks! You too!
1:35 if that engine was on, it would've sounded like NJ transit GP40-2
Caltrain is retiring their fleet of F40s.
I didn't know that #406 had a #90 applied to it. I have lots of pictures of it when It worked the 40th Anniversary train.
Had to be renumbered for the upcoming ALC-42s.
1:21 shame it got no motor
the renumbered 406 :skull:
💀
Great video well done!
This is awesome
Nice to know that (90)406 is still kicking around.
Brunswick, MAINE? Downeaster with NPCU “406” paint scheme derived from “40th” Anniversary set which toured the IS eleven years ago.
I remember 406 (pre 90406) had some sort of an engine in it.
Very nice
Awesome catch
Hope that the NPCU 90406 make its way to Chicago & Milwaukee along the way.
Have a nice day/night.
Thanks! You as well!
The Veterans NPCU is always running on the Hiawatha Service trains between Chicago and Milwaukee.
@@CNW_Railfan Yes, I do see that one every now and then. I have videos of it.
Have a nice day/night
It will not because it has ACSES for the northeast, not the other signaling for midwest.
@@hannamaniacrailproductions5082 Thanks for the info.
90406 has a Caterpillar engine for hep
Cool video and channel just subscribed
Thank you!
Great shot, but the loco in Amtrak livery is of course a Cabbage car - check the number !
just a cab…no baggage compartment on that one!
these aren’t new, it’s the same as the cabbages they always use but without the baggage compartment where the engine was. it’s just a reassigned cabbage engine from another route
Amtrak P42DC 95 leading pulling five Amfleet coaches, and the Amtrak F40PH Non-powered control unit, (NPCU) 90406 for the Amtrak 1971 - 2011 Aniv, Fun fact, 90406 doesnt have a cabbage roll up door!
0:43 lil woman get scared
Most likely a cabbage car! (Hollowed out cab used for baggage and npcu unit) Rare to see an f40ph though. Nice catch
rare? they’re on the majority of corridor trains outside of the NEC!
@@bostonrailfan2427 rare in the West Coast then
@@jackfrost3254 …was used on the Cascades for years
@@bostonrailfan2427 was! Haven't seen one in decades
@@jackfrost3254 and yet you’re still wrong as they were used. sorry if your ignorance was turned around on you
you should of got on to it
Non powered control cab. It hasn’t had an engine in years
Excellent video fantástic Capture my friend Like 👍🏻 And Greeting my from argentina 🇦🇷 nuevo suscriptor 😁💪🏻 suscríbete
The driver in the white car had no patience… The crossing arms, bells and lights were still on but they just drove on through.
Yep. That seems to be very common in Maine.
You're allowed to if the gates are rising and there is no trains approaching.
Bro if the gates are going up that means that there’s no other trains coming, you don’t have to wait for the bell and lights to go completely off, if the gates start going up that means you’re in the clear
@@FANTASTICJEFFYSTUDIOSMOVIESThey can malfunction and go up even if another train is approaching on the other track. For 1-track crossings, that is true.
Dude the gates went up
Why does Amtrak only use five coaches. Why not at least ten. Maybe think of mass promotions investing more dollars 💰 for more coaches which in turn would have more passengers Amtrak would make more money 💰💰. Amtrak was a good way back in the 1970s. Today they seem silly with only five cars.
I think Amtrak trains outside of Maine have a few more than 5.
shorter route…it’s not uncommon for the short routes to have fewer cars since there’s less need plus shorter stations
