  • As I understand it, the TOPS Steel Eagle was the first knife ever produced by TOPS Knives. Well, they've come out with a new version of this knife and it's still a monster. I really like the thickness of the handle, the look, and the overall build. The saw back is not my top choice BUT is is growing on me, so we will see what I think in a few months. As far as survival knives go, this is one - period. Check it out!

    TOPS is a Badass company from what I'm seeing and hearing about their products for sure, and this Steel Eagle 107C Delta Class blade, is that one knife that appears to do it all. The looks, performance, and capabilities in my opinion are phenomenal. This blade is that one blade you grab and go in a SHTF, and much respect to a blade profile like this one that offers a TANTO version of it, that to me spells strength.

    This is the same 107C Steel Eagle that I purchased years ago. Except it is nicer looking with no black coating (which I removed), better micarta color and better Kydex sheath vs the garbage nylon that it came with. It is a decent general survival knife. Personally I would have preferred a higher saber grind to remove some of the weight and removing a few sawtooth near the handle.

    Great vid ET. This post is 2021. I bought this knife only I did not get the saw back I got the model 107E. About the sheath, now there are several sheath options. I chose the tactical sheath it's made of HD denier nylon with a plastic liner for the blade . It's got mollie straps , several ways to set it up and a pouch on the front with a clip catch not Velcro. In the pouch I put a large ferro rod and a stick of fat wood. Now the sheath handle straps are Velcro and I eventfully will install snaps . This knife is a beast and I wear it everyday everywhere. LA has great knife laws.

    Big Ups to blade manufacturers that are turning 1095 carbon steel pry bars into Kickass blades. Think about a piece of steel like a pry bar, that when wedged into heavy objects that need a slight dislodging, I mean thats the kind of metal you want to carry on your side to get the job done. TOPS in my opinion just tops, I don't either bother to look at other brands out their, because if our US Armed forces can trust 1095 carbon steel, then I can too, and a Big shot out to our Veterans out their, I'm a US Navy Vet that served my country over 30 years ago ....Bravo Zulu to the US Military, Bravo Zulu.

    I do like it when knives have an exsposed pommel for striking, I dont like spikes though, the GSO series probably have the best pommel's imo. I wish companies would stay away from the saw-back though. I just want a plain spine with a sharp spine (less work for them) and I'm happy as far as that part goes. I also like the fuller and blade profile. Choils on big knives are a must for me. Over-all, not bad. But If I'm spending over 100 on a knife, I'm gonna need it to have a few basic features I want.

    The spine seems more of a for show kinda saw though, like the Rambo first blood knives.
    Still, looks cool n chops well etc. Dont think it will saw well..... I think Tops should make a spring steel stainless steel laser cut comat utility knife.... 1095 rusts. And does chip.
    No flexibility like apring steel does.

    Lose the saw back and add a 90 degree spine, reduce the jimping, shorter blade 5.5- 6" blade and reshape the handle. Then it would be closer to a "survival knife". Hmmm or just buy a Ontario RAT 5 and save a hundred bucks.

    (This is for the Reviewer. It is not Required Reading)
    Thanks Brother. 1-15-20 2 AM
    Just Subscribed. TOPS would do well to offer these Types of Blades either with, or without the Saw Teeth.
    With the Blade being .250” (1/4”) Thick, in regards to the “Birds Head” like Tang “Hook” that you referred to it as, at the Bottom Rear of the Grip, where the Tang Drops Down For Security, that Problem could be Solved by the Company Machining a Full .125” (1/8”) Radius, Starting where the End of the Micarta Handle Ends, and that Birds Head Part of the Pommel/Tang Starts to Extend Down, (or the Hook, as you we’re referring to it as - For Reference, My M1 Garand Bayonet is the Ultimate Example of how to Make a 100% Useful Birds Head Pommel, that is Pain Free) and to continue that Full
    .125” (1/4”) Radius, for the Entire Length of the Exposed
    Tang Pommel. It would still work fine as a Hammer/Pain Inflicter, yet won’t Injure you either. For those who may have Scoffed at his pointing out that both that and the Jimping on the Handle, were chewing up his Hands... you may want to take Note, that in an actual Survival situation, the idea is to remain as Injury Free as possible, to not only avoid Infection, but to be able to continue to use your Hands, and the rest of your Body, on a CONTINUOUS BASIS, in order to allow you to be able to do ALL of the Work that is going to be required to get you Home to your Loved one’s. You don’t know if that is going to be a Day or Two... or a Month or more!! Stay Cool, and use your Head... and you may be one of the Fortunate ones.
    One last thing, Jimping, Thumb Purchase, Traction Grooves, or whatever.... So far, I haven’t experienced the Geometry that is both Pain Free with Bare Hands, AND EFFECTIVE. It can be done. I have been planning on Machining a variety of different Geometry Traction Grooves, in conjunction with FLATS where your Thumb will actually Rest against. Knife Makers keep Machining pretty much a Combination of Big Radiuses at the Bottom, and Small Radiuses at the Top, neither of which used together, are either Effective, nor Pain Free. They are so ineffective, that to try to get Better Traction, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO PUT MORE PRESSURE UPON IT....WHICH IS STILL INEFFECTIVE, AND INCREASES PAIN!! What is required, is Straight 90 Degree Sides at the Top for the Grooves, and Flats at the Top.
    Remember, I haven’t Machined my Test Pieces yet, but I think that a Great place to Start, would be somewhere in the Order of .100” to
    .125” (1/8”) Wide Flats at the Top, and probably
    .0625” (1/16”) Wide Grooves for the First Effort, with .030” Straight Sides Down, then a
    .03125” (1/3”) Full Radius at the Bottom of the Groove, to prevent from Creating Stress Risers in the Corners, that could cause the Blade to Crack in Half.
    **** Along with the above as the First Effort Dimensions, I would likely try:
    .100” to .125” (1/8”) Wide Flats at the Top, with just a
    .0625” (1/6”) FULL RADIUS, IN PLACE OF THE ABOVE DESCRIBED GROOVE FOR THE BOTTOM. (BETWEEN THE FLATS)
    The varying of the Width between the Grooves, the Width of the Flats, and the Depth of the Grooves, are the Variables that I would vary, depending upon how the First Two Efforts Feel and Perform in keeping your Thumb from slipping on the Blade. I think that the First Adjustment Required, if any, will be the need to Widen the .0625” Groove, to allow one’s Thumb, to Deform, Deeper into the Grooves, which will allow for more Traction at the Corners of the Groove Sides, and the Flats at the Top.
    No matter what Radius that anyone may choose to try at the Top, usually at the End of Triangular Peaks, instead of using Flats with 90 Degree Corners, those Radiuses cannot compare to Straight Walls, (90 Degree Corners) meeting the Flats at the Top. (or possibly a Full Radius Notch, meeting Tangent to the Flats at the Top)
    Radiuses at the Top, just cannot do the Job Effectively, and Painlessly. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Peccaviultum 1095 is a good steel,and with they're differential heat treating TOPS does an excellent job with it.If you don't take care of it it'll rust its ass off.Now there are better steels,but they will cost more and can be harder to sharpen.So it's a trade off.A strong decent steel that'll be easy to sharpen but will rust if not taken care of.Or a steel with more corrosion resistance that will be a bit harder to sharpen and maybe a little more brittle.

      I can see that - but as I'm sure you know the quality is way higher on the TOPS.

    Real nice video. Having said that,I'm not big on one tool option knives.But if I was it would be the Tahoma field knife.As for the sheath,I wear a Bigfoot leather brand gun belt and the spring steel clip isn't big enough for my belt.

    Yeah Pastor Tim...looks like another big beefy knife from Tops.I like the handle on my Operator 7 better though --the handle on the Steel Eagle is the deal breaker for me.

  • @MickyMouseLimited
    @MickyMouseLimited 6 лет назад

    The knife looks good. But the handle is not good for chopping. Also you were working on rotten piece of wood as it is visible on the video and the saw is not good. Thanks for making the video it was really onset. This is really similar to the Rambo's knifes from the late 80s .

    Now Only: $210.00 Since 1998, TOPS Knives has been making hardcore knives for hardcore individuals.
    Yeah, I'm not hardcore enough to pay $210 for a knife. I can buy a shotgun for that much for heaven's sake.

      LA Prepper. You must be looking it the wrong places, boss. Because I'm easily able to find it in the $160-170 range.

    • @laprepper
      @laprepper 6 лет назад

      Fair enough, I think it is still a long time before I buy a $160 knife. I'm not saying there isn't a place in a man's home for a knife like that, only that for my immediate future, I can put that $160 to use in a variety of more useful ways. I don't mean to 'hate' on this video, it's just hard to watch these gear reviews when a product is over a hundred dollars more than what I would like to spend.

    • @SteveSmith-sd5hq
      @SteveSmith-sd5hq 6 лет назад

      LA Prepper. Yeah, I know what you mean. $160 still isn't cheap, especially for a knife.

    If I had to chop with that knife, I would want a longer handle, with no jimping on the handle. I don’t like the overall design at all.

    Its a nice knife for sure but have you ever tested out an authentic Kukri made in Nepal? I have an 8 inch Kukri knife that was made from the leaf spring suspension off a Mercedez truck.. Full tang.. Virtually indestructable.. Razor sharp.. Cost $50 bucks.. I think I have found the absolute best survival knife in the world and they come from Nepal.. I think my knife would chop that TOPs knife in half.. I almost bought a Tops Anaconda. Im so glad I didnt. No offense to anyone.. They are great knives.. Nepalenese Ghurka Kukris are on another level is all Im saying and they are cheap.. You got to have one in your collection..

      Jim Agro they're sharp for sure (at least mine is) but it's a quarter inch thick with a fairly thick grind, they aren't the most efficient cutting tools but they're sharp

    • @4Core100
      @4Core100 6 лет назад +1

      Yep its the angle of grind. Usually bigger angles are not razor sharp but will last longer when you are doing some rough wood work
