Graceland

  • The title track from Paul Simon's legendary 1986 album. This was a tricky song to arrange because there is so much happening rhythmically -- how do you get the 80's drum sound from an electric guitar??
Played on a Mexican Telecaster through a Fender Acoustasonic Jr. amp. Foot tap amplified by a Logarhythm stomp block. Vocals recorded through an Audio Technica AT2050 condenser mic, everything else DI, through a PreSonus interface.
Filmed on a Canon Rebel T3i and edited in Pro Tools and Sony Vegas.

OK, so every cover out there plays a very simplified version of Graceland. Paul has three guitars (plus bass) when he plays it live. The chord changes are fast and awkward. And here sits ambitious young Josh on his couch going to try it solo - and he pulls off the most authentic cover out there. This is just jaw dropping. If I didn't like Josh so much, I'd hate him.

What I love about this is the honesty. Josh is obviously a superb player, singer and arranger but these are single-take, warts-and-all productions. Josh keeps the little flubs in that others would spend ages editing out through re-takes, covered by multiple cameras. Josh, I really appreciate what you're doing and I respect your integrity above pretty much everything else.

I was living and working in Liberia in 1986. This Album was ALL OVER - Paul Simon resonated with everyone. People could get the lyrics - I had an older Liberian boss who loved country music - he loved this song. We would sit around with cigars and sing this SO LOUD. And once again - Josh nails it! ALot going on here and he NEVER seems ruffled. At that sweet voice.

"I say 'oh, this is what she means: she means we're bouncin' into Graceland.'
"and I say loo'oosin' love is like a window in your heart.
    Everybody sees you blown apart."
But the lyrics don't matter as much as Josh's guitar. Impossible yet flawless.

I have listened no many covers of this song on youtube including big budget professionals like Chris Martin's rendition and this is the only one where the lead full guitar licks are properly attempted...and probably the best I have seen. God job kid you have a gift.

I'm very impressed with your performance Josh, that song is a tricky one with it's timing but you nailed it. It's great to see someone as young as you having good taste in music. Keep up the good work buddy!

We’ve been fortunate enough to have Albert several times at our small 180-seat theatre where I volunteer front of house. Still a brilliant musician, very approachable, he tells some interesting stories, and is backed by an excellent band.

Graceland is one of my "Desert Island" albums, so I am quite critical of covers. Your cover is just amazing in how you have captured the most important essence of this song. The chord changes are a challenge, but I would imagine that the greatest challenge is delivering the vocals whilst at the same time keeping the conflicting guitar rhythm going. Well done!

Complex cord work & rhythm. There are several guitar parts that hold this song together. Josh did a great job at capturing what holds it all together. Not easy. Beautiful job!

I hate listening to covers on here but you've changed that. This is in my opinion one of the best songs out there. The whole thing is a long quote that you can apply to pretty much every situation. Your guitar picking is exceptional. This gives me weird chills. You have a future in this.

When you play others music if you don't add your own touch of heart with a flourish here or there let complainers complain but that gift of yourself is the greatest form of appreciation to the original. Thank you Josh

This just started playing on my youtube as an 'up next' suggestion. I thought to myself that it sounded like Paul Simon, but softer and with delicate and heartfelt beauty. I came back to the page and was delighted to have discovered you. Thank you, this is so glorious xx
