Barred Owl Calls To Mate | AMAZING VOCALS!

- A female barred owl calls to her mate after leaving the nest briefly to stretch her legs. This barred owl call, which mimics "who cooks for you, who cooks for you, all" is the most common barred owl call.

This is not a barred owl mating call, but is an owl call (or owl sounds) for communicating to other owls, or in this case, her barred owl mate. If you listen closely, you can hear the male barred owl call back.
Barred owls use a variety of different sounds and calls to communicate. The barred owl call featured here is the most recognizable of the bunch. Barred owls may be best known for their unique vocalizations, especially the unmistakable nine-noted hoot that is often translated to sound like, "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?" Besides that catchy call, these owls can be heard shrieking, crying, trilling, grumbling, and squeaking, especially during courtship. Sound exciting? It is! A pair of courting owls is certainly a sound to behold! The forest comes alive with the male's chimpanzee-like calls and the females' higher pitched responses.

Thanks so much for the link!
Your videos are so amazingly clear! Wow! Love them. Thanks for sharing! 🙌🏽
"Two mice for me, one mouse for yoooou."
XD I read that out loud I loved it that much.
That's how I was taught to identify them when I was a kid. Truly terrifying.
I'd never heard that one before... and I've gotten into many arguments with barred owls over the years.
To mate it would be “one mouse for me two mice for you”
They will hunt in pairs sometimes.
This is exactly what I'm hearing at night out my bedroom window! Such beautiful creatures!
Same
this video is incredibly aesthetically pleasing. the lighting, the background, and the gently blowing breeze all compliment each other and make this a very calming scene. even the call of the owl is nice to listen to. the owl itself is also very beautiful, in its own way.
maybe i'm just a little too passionate about birds.
dragongirl1501 Thank you for the kind comment - greatly appreciated :)
This was gorgeous, it's not just you!
+dragongirl1501 Yes! Very beautiful and serene...(is it wrong that I could watch it all day?)
Barn owls
Barred Owls.
Magnificent footage. Don't see many Owl videos this crisp, open, and well lit. You were in the right place at the right time.
davidib17 Thanks, David. I was fortunate to find this nesting pair, and watch and photograph the successful hatching of three owlets. I have a few other videos of this family, with a close up one showing a young owl expelling a pellet. Feel free to check them out.Cheers,Justin
It really is beautiful. The colors, framing and angle make it look like a living painting.
Fudd Duddly I also took plenty of still shots. I sell this image as print enlargements.
Hi Justin, Let us know how to order a print. While I garden I often have the chance to "talk" back & forth with a Barred Owl that lives just outside our meadery bordered by an old growth forest preserve in Chicago. I love this little guy/girl. Hope to take some pics and recordings myself, but in the meantime, I'd love to display your photo in our meadery/winery and encourage others to pay attention and appreciate delightful jewels of nature around us.... even within a city... and become stewards of nature for future generations.
Hi Audrey - Wonderful story :)
Feel free to go to my website. Prices for canvas prints are listed under the "About" section. You can also message me directly from that site.
Thanks!
Cheers,Justin
I like how their belly feathers fluff out when they do the call , so cute!!
Cute for sure! Thanks for watching :)
I live in Western Kentucky and there's a whole bunch of these owls outside of my house at night. I fall asleep by listening to their hoots to each other. It's so relaxing.
lucky
Lucky bastard!
That would have to be the best way of all to drift off to a peaceful sleep.
Hope you were safe through the tornados!
I love how the owl keep's her head steady as she sways with the branch.
all birds do that! it has to do with them not being able to move their eyes very much/at all! search Hypnotizing a Chicken i can't explain how it works in words but the video gives a pretty good example
I heard some owls calling one night and j got my owl hooter and started calling back. they answered with what sounded like the creepiest laugh I've ever heard. I went back inside lol. never heard it before or after
Barred Owls actually do produce a "laughing" sound. It's a territorial call- you probably instigated them to "laugh" by presenting yourself as an "unfamiliar owl". They may have felt threatened by the stranger calling to them, lol.
@@LeBatteur So, that explains my situation. My school has a lot of owls and they probably see me as a threat and produce the really deep laughing sound. They even make a creepy lady sound sometimes.
I had a pair in southern Kansas that loved the tree just feet from my bedroom window. It always started with the nice calm hooting back and forth and then at like 2 or 3 am they would go into a full on horror movie soundtrack. Freaked me out several morning's, I even got so sick of it one night I went out and started throwing sticks at it to now avail as it was in the very top of a 40 foot cottonwood.
you mean that muahaha sound sort of? a friend who has a degree in biology told me that one call would be male and the other was female. I have always noticed they use these sounds in jungle scenes in movies a lot.
Yesss that noise is so spooky! I just there's a family of these owls that live in my neighborhood and make those noises I'm trying to find a sample of it on here.
The Way its head stays centered is mesmerizing
these little guys are so adorable
They are pretty big, as owls go. I guess little in comparison to us, though. Cheers!
The owl is a majestic bird
I just heard this noise outside my window about 20 minutes ago. Had to look it up. Beautiful animal, beautiful sounds.
this is just so lovely with the peach colored blossoms in the background. Saw an identical owl at our creek today! Tried mimicking the call but she just stared back at me!
There is an owl near my house that makes this EXACT sounds ALL THE TIME! It's a little spooky lol but so interesting to finally know what that is 💕💕
Glad to hear you got to the bottom of the mystery. Thanks for watching :)
Same here I always thought it was some kind of bird in distress or has its eyes on food 😂😂
what an amazing creature. I have several behind my property that I have been stalking for awhile, still haven't seen them this close yet.
also curious as to why so many y people gave this a thumbs down, how can you dislike an owl in a tree, it's nature...
Yes, the whole 'thumbs down' thing I've never understood, lol.
Thanks for watching!
Paid trolls. It’s turning into big business. Corporations and corrupt govs. Nobody gave this a thumbs down. An automated software did. But you generally want to start leaving any notions you had about “likes” at the door from here on out. Meaningless at this point.
This owl cries this way "oohuhuhaha" in your compound means it's a bad omen. It indicates somebody going to die.
I heard two of these in the distance when I left the house for work. It was a really neat experience, and much louder than the video.
yes, I hear them very early in the morning when it's still dark out. I'll hear two of them going back and forth. I'm in upstate South Carolina and was wondering the type of owl, this is how I found out.
Frontal Lobotomy me too im in clemson and have big birds all over the place. Seen a peregrine falcon today.
Use the volume knob to make the video louder! 😂🍆😂🍆😂
I have Barred Owls near my home, they will often reply if you call out to them.
Thanks! Now I know what's making the sound out my window!
Just heard one for the first time outside my window during a full moon! Absolutely amazing ❤️
Wonderful, Tyana! They definitely are amazing birds.
I heard one last night carrying on for several minutes. It was a full moon as well last night 🌙
I heard this call last night for the first time ever down here in Waterbury Connecticut. My research brought me to this video. What a gorgeous bird. I hope I see one someday.
I'm here because I heard one in Canton, CT. I wasn't sure what I heard!
I had one follow me while I was riding my bike on a rail trail in the Hudson valley (NYS) around 10:30 one night. He flew above me at precisely the same speed I was going. Then he swooped down in front of me and arced back up, landed on a branch about 15 feet up. I stopped my bike and we stared at each other for 10 minutes before I got back on my bike and ride away, him still on the branch. One my top ten wildlife encounters for sure. I hope you see yours soon!
Wow! I’m from Waterbury, CT 👌🏽
Wonderful documentation. This video confirms what I am hearing at 2 am outside.
Great stuff and glad I could help out. I have plenty of barred owl videos on my channel, so feel free to have a look around. Cheers!
This video is incredible! Can't get over the quality, the sound, how freaking cool this owl looks! And that you spotted it in daylight! I only ever hear mine at night (in Austin, TX). Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Have. one living in the woods nextdoor to my house; occasionally has a friend who comes by to join him. When they get to taking to each other they get reeeaaaly fired up; it's very cool to sit and listen to in the otherwise relatively quiet night.
I just heard this call outside of my window tonight. I thought it was an alien, lol! Thank God for youtube...after a bit of research I came across your lovely video and it cleared everything up for me.
Simply beautiful....
I love him! I had one land on a low branch no further than 20 feet away from me one night just last week. I stood stock still for 15 minutes to see if was hunting, but he kept a close eye on my neighbors large dog being kept on an enclosed patio. He took off again with the softest whisp.
My toddler requests this video daily. Amazing footage!
Awww. That's too cute, Matt. Have you watched this compilation video I put together (which includes that clip and twelve others? ruclips.net/video/frVz4K4QiKM/видео.html
From Washington State... I’ve been hearing this call for the past week, always around midnight, and I couldn’t pinpoint what it was but figured it was some sort of owl. Now I know that we have a female barred owl living in our neighborhood :) absolutely delightful, thank you for the wonderful video.
Glad I could help out :)
You could very well have a male barred, as the call is the same. I only know that this was a female, as she had just come off the nest, and males do not sit on the eggs.
Either way, great to hear you have one around!
Female Owl: "where are you..and who cooks for you?"
Male Owl: (eating...probably by himself).
She is beautiful. Thanks for sharing. :-)
Glad to hear you enjoyed the footage, Arlene - thanks for watching :)
My dad always thought that call was from a great horned owl so did I until now.thanks!
leemilkakuh More than welcome - glad you enjoyed the video! Cheers!
Used my phone to record off the net some Barred Owls sounds. When I hear them crank up at night. I use the phone to playback their calls :) I never really see them until I did the phone trick. Then early in the morning, I seen them sitting in the trees close to the house.. My neighbor took a picture of one sitting on his fire wood stack. I couldn't believe how huge the owl was..He told me that he believed that owl was the cause of his cat getting attacked because he had to take the cat to the vet and get it stitched up. I enjoy this time of the season when you can see them. Thanks for the vid.. !
We have a pair that our house sits in between all night and we hear them talking back-and-forth and it’s so magical and musical. Thank you for posting this so that we could identify what kind of owls we have. We volunteer at a wildlife rescue Locally and we love it so much. Thank you for posting these videos
Wonderful to hear... and what a joy to have them so close. Glad to hear you enjoyed the footage and thanks for watching 😊
Last night there was one calling another outside my window. The hooting call sounds kind of funny to me, but sometimes they'll let out this screech or wail that'll send chills down your spine.
So happy to find out what I've been hearing in the woods (North of Atlanta, GA) behind our house for a few days. Thank you for the beautiful footage and info.
Great stuff!! Glad I could lend a hand :)
I'm beginning to fall in love with owls..they're becoming my favorite bird 🥰
Great to hear! They are definitely my favourite. Spotted two barred owls just yesterday while out for a hike. They were a bit camera shy ;)
Thanks for watching...
A+ footage!
Really nice that you were able to get some first class audio of the calls, too.
Appreciate the kind words! Thanks for watching...
This is a great video. Very nice picture. My daughter loves owls and this blew her mind. She's 16 months old and this is the closest thing she gets to TV, but you may have already made her an ornithologist.
Two me one of the most beautiful sounds of nature, is setting in a tree as darkness falls across the land for another night and hear the calls of barred and great horned owls as they let all you can hear them know it’s their time of the day once again to rule the sky’s. Thanks for sharing this footage of the only species to fly with no sound as they hunt the darkness. One of our greatest birds of prey owls are just as amazing to see as they are to hear. Thanks for sharing this clip. 🦉🎥💯👍
They are such wonderful creatures - and I have been fortunate to share many special moments with owls over the years. Certainly never gets boring!
I found this video trying to figure out what I was hearing outside my home, so wonderful!
Great stuff, Justin! Glad I could help out. Thanks for watching!
I’d hear this sound all the time at my grandparents’ house in rural Iowa. Reminds me of being a kid. ❤️🦉
Awesome to hear! Yes, such a distinct and wonderful call.
Thanks for watching 😊
Love hearing owl calls. Sometimes I can hear them in the wooded brush behind my property. I just sit and listen. Amazing!
They truly do have an amazing call! Thanks for watching :)
They are really the most gorgeous birds. Thank you for sharing.
My favourite owl hands down. Thanks for watching :)
Wow she really puts her whole body into the call amazing capture, Justin! 🦉😃👍
She sure does! Glad you enjoyed the footage, Patrick - cheers!
We have several different owls in our area(western Washington-Great Horned, Barn, Screech, Spotted & Barred) but the Barred owls are the by far the most common & vocal around our property. I usually hear the "who cooks for you" calls, but heard a different sound(a single higher call, but similar tone)& this prompted me to look up the sound, which brought me to your video. I've developed quite a deep connection with them over the years & love to sit outside between midnight to 3am & listen/talk to them. They will often converse with you!Sometimes it's a lone owl, at times there a few, but once in awhile, there will be many talking with one another for miles around & this can sometimes result in the more crazy, excited sounds from them, which are kind words of terrifying if you don't know what it is! LOL Anyway, thank you for the lovely video of this lovely bird & I hope you all have/make a wonderful day! 🦉😁
Wonderful words, James, and thanks for sharing. Definitely a favourite bird of mine. The snowy's will be returning in the next month - can't wait! Cheers, Justin
Ahhhh owls r so calming to me
Just heard 4-5 of these guys calling at each other around 2am the other night. One of them was def a mating call which is weird it being the beginning of Oct In Vermont. One of the best videos of this owl ive ever seen.
What a beauty! Great footage of her!
Many thanks, Rebecca - glad you enjoyed it!
Finally...a high-quality RUclips video filmed by someone who obviously has an amazing camera. This has to be the best looking video I’ve ever seen on RUclips - not to mention, I love the content and plan on broadcasting the audio over my Bluetooth speakers for my owls at work and also the next time I hear a Barred Owl near the house.
Thank you for the kind comments, April - very much appreciated. Glad to hear you enjoyed the video. (Take a look through my channel - have quite a few owl videos :))
Was hearing this exact noise outside my window. Googled the noise and found your video. Thanks for postings
Great stuff, Stephanie! Glad I could help out. Thanks for watching :)
Thanks for posting this video. Now I know what is making all that racket at 2AM.
I was concerned it was one of those escaped monkeys from a few days ago, as I am at hotel about a mile from where they escaped. So this was a relief, haha.
Haha! Great stuff. And escaped monkeys? Now that sounds like a great story!? Thanks for watching.
@@JustinHoffman A truck carrying 100 monkeys crashed in Pennsylvania, and some of them escaped. Apparently some of them were infected with some disease.
I was about a mile from where it happened.
I love Owls, and the video was beautifully done. The audio was fantastic.
that is exactly what this owl sounds like outside my bedroom window. Awesome!
It was a pleasure to watch such a clean video. Just perfect.
Thanks! Appreciate the kind words :)
I have one in my woods and this is the BEST vocalization I've found ! Thankyou
Great to hear, Diana - nice that you enjoyed the video :)
I sit on my porch every night to listen to this sound. I love it!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing, Gena - and watching :)
Heard this all spring in our woods.
I have one that comes to hunt in my back yard. Such a noble looking bird!
Just came from a video on the Loon calling at night. Majestic. This is also a great video thank you.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I have a few loon videos on my channel, with piggy backing newborns that you might enjoy :)
We have one of these in our back yard and she's laying eggs inside a hollow tree! She is calling out to find a mate. But I don't hear any :(
Of the male and female, the female offers the higher octave in its string of notes, displayed at around 1:30 (male in background) and again around the 2 minute mark. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful film - crisp and clear and the sound is wonderful.
Glad you enjoyed the video, Nancy...and thanks for watching :)
Beautiful footage!
Backdrop amazing!
Thanks for the kind words, Cheryl :)
One of the more beautiful owl calls
I agree whole-heartedly.
Beautiful birds
Beautiful video footage, Justin! Absolutely enjoyed it!
Thanks for the kind comment, Michael - appreciate it.
Have three of these beautiful creatures around our property right now in middleburg, NY yelling at each other. It’s so beautiful at night
Wonderful to hear! Enjoy... and thanks for watching.
Great video...capturing the " feel " of the woods @ the season... WHAT a spectacular bird the Barred Owl @ its call is. Thanks foe sharing. I would imagine the great horned owl would be a Bird od Prey. ?!? I adore all owls!!
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video, Terrie. Yes, barred owls are definitely my favouirte, although I have also spent time with great horned owls and they are pretty awesome also. Thanks for watching :)
Amazing vocals indeed!!
idk why but its so cute and funny
Thanks for posting. I have been listening to this right next to my house in Michigan, with another answering from across the street. I wondered what they were... now I know. Exciting to think they may have little ones soon 💕
1:33 You can hear the other calling back in the distance.
Just saw 2 of them around 2pm today in CT. Honored
There's a neighborhood of Barred Owls in the trees right beside my bedroom. They can really raise a ruckus, especially when they hear a pack of coyotes or a siren.
I'm from Arkansas, woke up at 1:30am and heard this exact call, had to look it up, great video!
Awesome stuff! Glad I could help out. Thanks for watching...
Yes, that is exactly the call I'm looking for! They are whoop-whoop-whoop-purrrrrrring it up outside right now, and I had no idea what animal it was. Such a weird sound! Thanks for posting!
wobster109 Great stuff! Yes, their call is different from all other owls....one way to remember it is, "who cooks for you, who cooks for you, all."
Hope you can find them and get some images. Nesting season has just begun.
Thanks for watching. Cheers, Justin.
I'm a southern Oklahoma native and I always leave my window open at night so the Barred Owls can sing me to sleep. 😊
Thanks for sharing. This exactly matches the call I was hearing in my neighborhood late this afternoon. 🦉
Great stuff, Dan! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this gem of natural wonder..... The second phrase of the call sounds more like,
" Who cooks for yeeeeeeeeeeeeeew !" Love this video.
I'm hearing this outside now....so cool!!
Thanks for sharing this, beautiful bird.
Beautiful, astounding sound of wildness.
Many thanks!
I am SOOO appreciative of this video!! THANK YOU for this!! For explaining exactly what I was wondering about these MAJESTIC creatures. Owls are amazing & this video is pure greatness for me so thank you. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Wonderful to hear, William, and glad you enjoyed it. Definitely was a fun experience.
Here's a compilation video I put together, showcasing my best barred owl interactions. Hope you like it: ruclips.net/video/frVz4K4QiKM/видео.html
Cheers,
Justin
I just heard a male (? the voice was lower-pitched than this bird's) barred owl call no more than five minutes ago, just yards from my home! We also have a pair of great horned owls who call to each other frequently! Generally, the two species call from opposite directions...
Thanks for helping me confirm what I was hearing
Great stuff! Glad I could help!
This is amazing! Last summer, I saw an absolutely beautiful owl in our backyard tree as I walked out the door. I was amazed because I have never seen an owl ever in my 55 years of life. I never saw him/her ever again, and had never heard him/her even then. But tonight, as my husband was getting ready for bed, he excitedly said to come listen to this odd calling sound outside our bedroom window. My grandson and I both went outside, and sure enough, we heard this very exact sound! My grandson spotted her with his youthful eyes and his flashlight, but I'm too near sighted and it was too dark for me to be able to see her. But, we now know we have at least, one female Barred Owl living close by. She called for about 20 minutes, and that was it. I'm wondering if this is the same one I saw last summer, but never heard any spring mating calls. I'm excited to learn more about her, and her mate, and her soon to be family, and where she may be nesting.
Finally found what I’m hearing outside right now! Thank you
Great stuff! Glad I could help. Thanks for watching...
so i’m not hearing some creepy monster in the woods at 2am? nice😀
Haha! You're safe ;)
What a beautiful animal and a fantastic video!
Cheers, Becca - glad you enjoyed the footage :)
I love owls their one of my favorite animals right next to foxes especially the barred owl
Same here...thanks for watching :)
God she's beautiful! !!
Praise the lord for these beautiful birds!
Sorry, she’s taken
I’m pretty sure it’s a male as usually they make the mating calls.
@@babyyodaiscute5585 She's not making a mating call, she's "calling to her mate." Read the description.
@@Dennis-nc3vw oh wow. Sorry. Thank you for letting me know,
I was woken up to this call outside my window! Living in Seattle I don't often many hear (some!) owls - so it was an extremely fun surprise being so close to an urban area. But we have a wooded creek near us.
Thank you for denoting what kind of call this was - other videos hadn't so I greatly appreciate the specificity.
They are often found close to swamps or running water, so sounds like you have a great little spot outside your window.
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful their call reminds me of the call of a loon.
Stunning video of a magisterial owl 🦉
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful...I heard this the other night, thought it was some type of owl, but wasn't sure. Thanks!
I’m sitting on my bed, when I hear this exact noise! There was so much ruckus outside and tons of this noise!!! I wonder if it was mating calls! I know we have these in our woods because a few months ago one landed on a low branch in front of me while I was strolling through our woods! This is amazing!
Very cool...and yes, it was probably a mated pair that you were hearing. Exciting! Thanks for watching...
What a cute face! Those eyes are so adorable!🌌 so beautiful!!!
Glad you enjoyed the video, Christina - thanks for watching :)
Awesome video! Love this owl. Such a unique vocal.
Cheers, Bill - glad you enjoyed the footage and calls...
Good looking Birdie.
