his voice has been the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, the unusual artistic and instructional project to which he has given himself body and soul during the
last fifteen years, and that has turned this previously minor player in the
jazz scene into a central figure of the country's music.
Chamorro, saxophonist, bassist, big band director, teacher, and
discoverer of talents, is the recipient of the 'Portrait of an Artist' of the 53rd
Voll-Damm Barcelona Jazz Festival, which means there are five
concerts under his name. "But it could have been ten more,
because I have a lot of interesting things on my hands," he says.
It's not a bluff. Nor ego. He handles a lot of projects,
all linked to Sant Andreu. For the first of them, this Friday in the
Barts hall, he will gather the dozens of musicians who have
recorded their own albums under the umbrella of Sant Andreu, and that in
many cases, have made music their career. "The story of Andrea Motis is amazing,

There are many more names, not so popular but with solid trajectories, such as
saxophonist Eva Fernández, trumpeter Joan Mar Sauqué,
the bassist Magalí Datzira. In total, seventy students have passed through the Sant Andreu Jazz Band. Although calling them students seems strange. "At the end of the day,
I play with them," he says. He has counted them because in one of the
concerts of the festival, on December 10 at the Palau, they will all play. In another, he will bring together one of his most promising soloists, the
singer and violinist Èlia Bastida, with veteran saxophonist
American Scott Hamilton, an authority on classical jazz.
On November 17 at the Palau, Andrea Motis will premiere in Barcelona a
project with several guitarists. And to close this opportunity presented by the festival, Chamorro reunites with another soloist of note, Scott Robinson, in a concert of baritone saxophones, which also includes one of his disciples, Alba Esteban.
Direct contact with top-level musicians is one of the incentives
that Chamorro offers to the members of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band. "Being 14 or 15
years old and thinking that you can also be there playing is important, it is part of learning, and it helps you to believe in yourself. The opposite happened to me, so
with them I try not to be that way. They study without suffering for not being the
best, but with joy. All that has added up and has made the
kept the project going." The SAJB does not lack applicants, even though
it is no longer the only jazz band of this nature. "At the level of
concerts we might resent it a bit, of course, but it is a joy to go to Manresa and

another band in the Canary Islands and another in Sedaví, Valencia. "In Italy they have a
'big band' that traces its roots to us, because they asked me to go there and explain to them how to start it up. In Mexico, exactly the same situation. I am proud to have been
in the forefront on all this"
