It's frustrating having to deal with scammers on eBay but worse when they are other businesses trying to pull a fast one. Even if he is operating as a one man band and avoiding being a business seller, he's clearly successful dealing in this field so there's just no need for him to try and weed out a little more profit by lying about the delivery condition, talk about desperate measures. I have a small amount of competitors in my field and over the years, I think almost all of them have bought from me in the past and tried to pass off one of their faulty items back to me. I security mark all my items and any suspect returns or simply just difficult / rude buyers go straight into my ban list, my stance is, I don't need their business, so I have no interest in giving them the time of day in the future.
The picture of the damaged part looks like the wood is from something else similar (which is why he took the picture like he did close up and not full view of the item) Plus for the table to be badly damaged like he stated the box would of been damaged where the impact happened that caused the damage to the table, there is no way the box would not of shown any damage
I had an experience with a seller of a model train. It was described as fully working but in fact had all the internal electronics faulty. I offered to repair it for a discount which he refused calling me a scammer. I returned it and it was subsequently relisted as a non working item as spares or repair for a much lower price. It is not only buyers but a lot of sellers that are up to no good.
Absolutely, I bet that happens a lot (not the being called a calmer part). For example, we’ve just had a return on a camcorder. It was tested here and looked ok, but there does appear to be a more complicated problem that we wouldn’t have detected in our pretty basic checks, so it’s coming back. When we relist it we’ll do the same, list it cheaper and for spares/repairs.
I’ve learned from previous experience that once someone wants to return something because it’s ’faulty’ then I now just accept the return. I’ve had two cases on the trot recently where two amplifiers I had sold were ‘faulty’ and both came back to me working perfectly. I sold a brand new Kate Bush box set on vinyl and a case was opened saying it was warped, I sent the guy a returns label and never heard from him again……wonder why 🤷♂️
a dishonest person in one area is a dishonest person throughout, they probably pass of fakes as the real mccoy, do poor repairs and refuse to stand by their work when repairs fail etc
Yep, I do same as yourselves and say it has to be returned. Amazing how often that is the last that I ever hear from the buyer. Though I have a lot of regular buyers its almost always the one-off buyer that 'tries it on'.
Yeah, the regulars would never try it on for obvious reasons . Re: defective purchases, I've bought 1 charger recently & I found its fitted cable to connect to a laptop had split insulation, not mentioned in ad. I buy these to resell & couldn't use the item. Opened a claim, they just refunded with no return, then blocked me, a shame as they're quite a big seller at fair prices. So in hindsight for a cheap item it might be occasionally worth "sucking it up" to be able to keep buying from them. In hindsight I might have been better off returning it at my expense but still asking for refund.
A couple of pictures of broken wood is not sufficient. I insist on clear, in focus pictures of the shipping box showing the shipping label, the packing materials, the entire item that was sent showing the broken part, the invoice and a specific part of the item where I have marked it but it is not obvious nor damaging or that has a unique mark or feature that I photograph but do not publish). If the buyer is willing to provide all that, then they are probably telling the truth. As your buyer showed, scammers don't want to go to any trouble beyond making veiled threats or begging for money or returning bricks. I take my time examining the photos and make my determination from those. Then I either file an insurance claim, or I provide a return label and refund once the item is back in my hands and is verified to be the one I shipped out. I only ask for returns on items that are worth repairing, or if I suspect a scam.

Looks like it`s going to be a year of changes, just seen this - From January 20, 2025, UK-based private sellers with an eBay Shop subscription will no longer have access to coupons, sale events, and order discounts. You’ll still get your free 100 listings per month, and access to other tools such as a personalised shopfront and promoted listings. Interesting?
Hi I got caught out myself I am selling just family stuff and I sold a food mixer to a dealer and he said it was broken and sent me a photo so not being a big seller I said ok sorry I give you your money back including his postage and said I will have it collected from his house can he repackage the items I got it back and all the good stuff missing like 16 items I got back in touch and he said he was keeping it and don’t have to return them as I have refunded him I spoke with eBay and they said I should have gone back through them and waited until I got back my items so could not help me lesson learned 😢
Wow that’s exactly the scenario this is trying to avoid. Never refund without an open return case, but as you said, you’d learned that lesson now. What a crap situation and a horrible scammer.
Thankfully only had one breakage on a Disney mug, they bought to replace one they broke and sent pics. Was a bit suspicious but put in a claim for post office but in the end they didn’t raise it with eBay so I agree with your thoughts on this issue

Maybe a silly question but do you guys make any money selling on eBay? Whilst your business model looks sound, unless you are selling hundreds of items then it can't make you any money?

If i made a mistake which i have i accept the loss and what i have sent and cry for 2 seconds then move on.
It’s so disappointing when a business behaves like that. I have occasionally offered partial refunds if I believe it’s genuine - usually on clothing where I might have missed a stain or missing button - but usually just tell them to open a return. I bet that table appears on his account with never broken legs very soon!

PDF to JPEG? whats wrong with taking a screenshot of the PDF, pasting it into paint and then saving it as a JPEG? Using 3rd party software to do what windows can already do, seems a bit OTT. If you're using a tablet/phone, you can still do screenshots. Also, when I buy on ebay and I get something that's broken, the cost of posting it back is often more than the items value. I bought a pancake maker 2 years ago for £18, it turned up smashed to bits, it was advertised as "minor cosmetic damage", but in this state it was actually dangerous, the postage to return was over £20, so I didn't return it, I pulled out the Gorilla glue and repaired it myself. I'm the seller thinks I was trying to scam them, but I literally couldn't justify the cost of sending it back. This is also why I don't sell on eBay myself, I'd be making a loss because of postage costs. I know there must be a secret to getting cheaper postage, because I see people selling items for less than the cost of postage, but it's literally a closely guarded secret, you see all these videos on how to become an eBay seller, but they never ****ing mention the postage costs.
If you screenshot a barcode, it often won’t print in good enough quality to scan, not worth the risk. In the case of your pancake maker, the seller should be covering the return cost, so that shouldn’t have even been an issue for you. You’re absolutely right, it’s not worth selling on ebay if posting it makes it unprofitable 👏
I wish my returns customers didn't bother to send stuff back ! Total sc*m artist, just fishing. That kind of damage as on pic would have had to involve packaging damage. Putting aside the sc*m aspect, I've found that selling to resellers carries both risks & benefits. 1) They can be very exacting & will have a real eye for detail, picking up on small things a regular punter would't do. Also, a few of them have optimistically factored in some potential resale value to them before they get it, which if there are slight blemishes/faults they didn't notice in the ad, can mean less profit for them overall & a red-mist job. 2) Many resellers will also give you the benefit of the doubt, for instance they know just how costly it is to send tables or big stuff etc, so they won't slag you off for overpriced P&P.
So much of the problem is in this comment regarding selling to sellers. It’s an antique table. All you can do is take pictures of all sides and describe anything obvious that you notice with an additional note like ‘used item with general wear from age, use and storage’. Sellers do not have to list every scratch or mark and if a buyer buys something that isn’t in the condition they were hoping for, that doesn’t make it an INAD. Unfortunately people like to bully sellers and use language that attempts to scare others into submission. It’s not on.
@@Married2Reselling Btw I wasn't remotely trying to criticise your packaging standards for items like this. All returns we get we relist at the original price plus more to cover the costs of the previous return (outgoing post). We’re a small business, not a machine! How’s that petty? If you like being taken advantage of then that’s up to you.
@@Married2Reselling you people are unbeleivable. Get free stuff from freecycle and flip it for a profit. I wonder how the donor would feel when they stuff they are giving away is being sold for a profit.
It had been available for weeks and they wanted rid of it. You’re making an assumption that they didn’t know what was happening with it.
You get much money from being a Professional RUclips commenter? 🤣
So you sold so mething you got for free and are now whining that someone is scamming you.
You think because someone sells something they got for feee that they’re fair game for scammers? Or just resellers? Perhaps we should add something to the product description about the circumstances of how the item was obtained, just so the scammers to know to continue or not.
Watch the video again, there was no whining.
wow first the Bubble Wrap now the £20 you guys must be really hard up huh I mean other people would just give them the 20 and be done with it but you guys that's a lot of money to you.
It’s obviously the principle, not the money
Other people would give them £20 and be done? More fool them, people that do business in this way cost the economy millions which affects us all.
i would bet the table was not damaged the legs shown in the pic could have been anything he should have sent a pic of the whole table the scammer
