do you really think you could ever recover a lithium battery that had fallen down to 0v? This just means your BMS shut off power to the discharge which on a micro processor based bms like on the sur rons can happen for a number of reasons. The fact you were able to even get to ride your bike means it did not fall below an unsafe level.
I use Holmes electric engines in my rc crawlers and scale trucks. Best rc motor builder in the business. Great review of the e-motor cross cycle. Thx John.
I hear you regarding the spokes, I can also say, our kiwi kids and these guys ride really hard, have never had an issue to this day. No questioning your comment, just adding to it. Nice review BTW
That's a very important piece of information that the battery pack arrived flat. I would love to know what the actual voltages of the cells were. You are right: letting a lithium ion cell go below 3 volts per cell REALLY shortens their life span. If I ordered this bike and it came with a battery pack that was below 3V/cell I'd send the thing back. Or at least bargain for a replacement battery pack right away.
So far so good. I've alerted Luna to it and we are going to simply use the battery. If a problem arises, we can get it swapped out. If no problem arises, I'll keep riding it.
@@HolmesHobbies Thanks a lot for the reply. I'm a big fan , and just received my Sur Ron after seen your videos. Can you tell me how to do that ? Where to disconnect the correct cables ? I would be very happy if you could send me email : luis.agl@me.com
Quite so. I finally got the time to clean up the wiring on the bike, looks a lot better now. Should have a vid out in a few days that covers the latest changes.
In Los Angeles we have Cab Eagle, a pretty badass looking electric bike. Pricey but I've heard good things about it. I wish you could come down and check it out and do a video on it too. I'm in the market for a bike, looking at Cab Eagle and Australias Stealth Bomber. Now, this one enters the market...
I, too, shall refer to your hat being all catawampus and imply that your apparel makes you appear to be a player-created character in a skateboarding video game while also proclaiming that older internal combustion technology is cheaper than new electric propulsion because I am very observant and smart and quite attractive.
Ok fine review, I’m not sure if I missed it or not, but not a word about the brakes? The brakes look to me like cable operated mechanical brakes? Is that so? If so that could be a problem at the speeds the bike is capable of. Plus how far can one travel on it? I have to say, why didn’t they have these when I was younger!
The BMS was shut off so the battery terminals were reading zero, didn't know how low they really were. Didn't take long to hit 48v on the terminal, so it must have not been much below 3v/cell.
Hello, I just was wondering, I went to order a controller and digital display for my ebike that has a 48v11a battery. I thought about it several hours later. I realized the controller was a 25a. Will the battery be a problem with this controller being only 11ah?
Personally thought this review of components was sufficient, but would love to see more review of riding and owning the bike. Charging, battery swap and cost, on road riding etc.
Absolutely! I'll keep up the info as we put more ride time on it. I didn't get into that aspect of the bike because I honestly don't have enough ride time to form much opinion of the finer points. But I will soon, its getting ridden daily.
Wasn't on purpose, the jacket had pushed it around. But it gets all sorts of comments, so it was probably a good thing for the vid to have something for people to dislike.
Very good job on this review! I could tell your very experienced with this type product. Great component explanation, even a newbie to e-bike learning like me came away with knowledge I can now use to explore the options out there that interest me. Thanks!
Travis T - Thanks for educating me about this bike. Guess I just thought since it looks very TRAIL friendly it could replace (for lack of a better word) a mtn bike. It's still very cool & I'll have to gain more knowledge about where I could ride one here, thanks again Travis.
Hey, I was checking out the Delfast and Hallomotor bikes. They are similar in price but both use hub motors. Have you seen either of these? I'm trying to choose between the Sur Ron and those two right now. I could really use some thoughts.
If you care about handling, choose the sur ron. Hub motors handle terribly because of unsprung weight, although they are simple systems. There is also the constant issue of hubmotors coming loose and possibly damaging the frame. The torque is transmitted on the hubmotor axle and requires either a well engineered torque arm solution or constant attention to the axle bolts. If given the choice, I will always choose a system with a motor on the frame and minimized unsprung weight.
@@HolmesHobbies I appreciate the insight. As soon as I'm sure I can spend the money, I'll be getting one. Possibly tomorrow. Your review went a long way towards my decision, so thanks a ton for doing that.

Thanks Paul! The youtube page is just a side project for informational purposes. I can give people information and help when appropriate, and have the resources to bring it together into a vid. So it would be a shame to not do this, in my opinion. Since it seems there isn't a lot of information about this bike yet, it was appropriate. Heck, Luna cycle where I bought it from doesn't know anything about the bike, they couldn't answer any of my questions and have been zero help after the sale. Taking their sweet time to respond with a "I don't know" is pretty weak IMO. Couldn't take that week and research or inspect your own inventory and come back with a real response? Just a little frustrating, which is one reason I made this vid so other people didn't have to get the same runaround on super basic information.

Very good feedback/review video. I also like that cap, but can't tell what brand that is. Looks very interesting & would need one for the colder days. Cheers & keep up the good stuff!
Incredibly sharp looking bike. The frame looks amazing. Looks like the majority of the bike is made of high quality alumimum which is a major plus because it retains strength but at a fraction if the weight. Given the fact that both the battery and motor are heavy having that package with aluminum or even titanium parts surrounding it keeps the weight if the bike down quite a bit. Im gonna guess and say the entire 🚲 weighs substantially under 100lbs. Its probably around 50lbs +/-. But it has front & rear hydraulic disc brakes. A beefy fully adjustable unishock in the rear, and top notch oversized, fully adjustable inverted front forks that can be locked out. The twist throttle is another plus giving you more precision and control when riding hard on back trails, etc. The over look of the bike is amazing. For $3200+/- you woukd be hardpressed to find a bike this nice with similar features that can do 45mph.
Life of an RC Addict THE MORE WEIGHT, THE MORE DRAW ON THE BATTERY. Don't EXPECT 45 MPH, OR AN, AS ADVERTISED,NUMBER OF MILES, BEFORE THE BATTERY NEEDS A RECHARGE.
Great review. I really am interested in this bike. Looking at all the photos / videos/ reviews I can find about this bike, the one thing that concerns me is the lack of frame structure below and in front of the motor. If I had this bike, I would be riding it in the backwoods on hard trails , where log hops are frequent. How well is the lower assembly protected from direct hits? Thanks
First off thanks for putting this thing on my radar, it looks awesome. 19x1.4 tires are a bit narrow, does it look like you can fit a wider tire on there, and if so how much wider? Thnx
How did you get it now, when LunaCycles says it will ship end of February?? I'm ordering mine by the end of this week! The price on Saturday was about $3,300. This week it's $3,474. I'm hoping it doesn't go up anymore before Friday!!
How slow can you go? Useful for slow speed control where on petrol you might slip the clutch, drag the brake and keep the revs high. How would something like that work on electric. It's useful for filtering in traffic (legal in UK)
Super duper slow, 1/2 mile an hour maybe? They did a great job mapping out the throttle curve and overlaying torque control. Extremely good throttle control on this bike.
Very good point on the spokes! Looks slick though... would actually prefer a front fender "a la dirtbike" on this and the back fender a few inches longer in terms of looks alone BUT as it is, not bad at all.
Very informative and thorough. Can’t believe you rate quality at 9/10 despite nuts and bolts not being tightened. Sounds like China has managed to lower everybody’s expectations.
The overall bike quality IS 9/10. I didn't discount it because of the bolts for a few reasons. Primarily, they were "tight enough" to get through a few hundred miles. 2nd, any bike rider must go over a new bike and also do regular checks on nuts and bolts, this is a big part of owning any bicycle or powered machine. While I would certainly prefer the bike to be totally perfect, do keep in mind that I have been building my own bikes for decades and will nitpick details that might be good enough for everybody else.
How exactly did you buy this from their website? I'm not fluent in chinese =/. Also whats the difference between the Bee and Light Bee. The website only shows the Light Bee. I'd love to get one,
How can you rate it a 9 out of a 10, especially since it came with the dead battery, and very poor assembly? Tell your camera operator to zoom in on what you’re talking about as opposed to zooming out so we can see you. Also, were you paid to do this review?
The battery capacity was not affected by the low state of charge, and evidently the packs are sent in this low voltage state for shipping/ import reasons. Turns out the charger would have started the first time if I just waited more than a few seconds, so that was my fault there. Assembly itself wasn't poor at all. You have to keep in mind I have been building bikes for decades and am being really really nitpicky about everything, you are getting the unfiltered deal and not a sugar coated review. This is a bike that has to be partially built. Tightening and checking bolts is part of the final assembly procedure that SOMEONE must do on all bikes. No actual issues material or otherwise have cropped up, so for this bike in today's market the 9/10 rating is still accurate IMO. A high quality bike at practically half the cost of anything near it. There are a lot of bikes similar to this one in the 10k to 12k range even. Wish I was paid for this, lol! The bike was bought at full price, and I paid employees to film and edit it so other people could make an informed decision. I've been riding the pants off of the bike every day I can, absolutely love it.
Wish I could afford something like that! Maybe down the road, I would go for an Alta or Zero full size motorcycle at that price point. Although there are lighter "mountain bike'" size ones at the same price too. Don't need another light bike though, the Sur Ron really fits the bill perfectly.
Thanks for the review. You might want to do some more attention to detail about that front brake line . But I don't want to tell someone with your detail what to do . Thanks for the review . It was point on .
Thanks for telling me about the packaging. I have the worst luck when it comes to missing components. I won't be spending that much money in fear that I might be missing a bolt when the packaging arrives. Thank you for saving me that possible headache 🎆. I'll definitely be looking for an equal competitor that has better packaging reviews. 🎆. You are a life saver. Bobby
I bet the packaging has gotten better. I got the first of the first bikes and it was probably inside a LTL container and subject to a lot more rearranging. Current shipments are completely full cargos and won't have as much chance for damage.
I find it troubling that Luna Cycle didn't at the very least, charge the battery. They also should have went over every bolt and key part before shipping it out to you. Just my 2 cents.
Supposedly, the battery is made of high grade Panasonic cells. From my personal experience, from owning 17 different electric bicycles, is that every one of them had a full to 3/4 charge upon arrival or when I would pick one up from a local dealer. This Sur Ron model I was and am very interested in buying based on the specs provided by Luna Cycle, but not if the batteries have not been taken care of.
I have been watching some killer videos of how much this bike totally rips and I appreciate your in-depth review. My friend just got one and it looks sick! I am concerned about the spokes and the tires but hopefully they will fix that. I think I might buy one.
Only downside is using them at night in town. I thrashed the back lot for a half hour saturday night past 9pm and didn't have the cops come. Couldn't do that on any of my gas bikes!
No actually I haven’t... I’m just fucking with you snowflake... I live in chapel hill if you wanna come find me. Lots of your kind live here you may just feel at home.
I'm in Columbia. It's just my personal bike and I don't have a storefront, and honestly I'm not really keen to pass things off to strangers. 6'2 you might be a bit cramped. I'm 5 nine
It has actually held up very well, despite my reservations. The flanges are just tall enough, and the spokes just long enough, that it seems to be very balanced and not in need of relacing. No stress fractures have been evident on mine after a year of riding.
First look for me. This looks great!. If i wasn't a city person i would get one for sure. Looks like it can be crazy fun off road in the woods jumping over stuff. 👍
The mic is about a foot away from the frame, on me. To a person standing to the side it's not loud at all, and really isn't loud to the rider either. But the mic does catch the frequency well. Newer bikes should have a controller with less noise.
#1, I don't care if it is. #2, lithium batteries are 100% recyclable if people don't just throw them out. Tesla's battery factory recycles this format of cell, solvent and all.
To expound on #1, I don't care if electric vehicles are "more deadly" for the earth, mostly because there isn't enough information to really say that is absolutely true. There is as much support for them being better as their is being worse, and it is tough to trust that the fossil fuel industry isn't just spreading propaganda to keep their revenue stream flowing. I like electric vehicles not because of some "green" feeling, but because of the raw performance and power they give. I have dirtbikes, I have scooters. One by one they are all getting replaced by lighter and more powerful electric bikes. 6 of one, half a dozen of another. I'll take the one that is easier to maintain and produces peak torque at zero RPM.
Can I ask how tall you are and what you would think about a 4' 10" female riding that bike? Are the shock and fork alterable or swappable for something with less travel?
My only concern would be EMF in the microwave frequencies, and the battery doesn't produce any EMF. In the case of a fire it would be directed to the top or bottom end of the box, and not sideways towards the legs.
Really nice looking and I looked at price which was awesome. Do they ship to the USA or did you have it specially sent? I saw one that’s the white ghost and I’m asking them on price and if possible for sending to the States now. Your review on this bike has really peaked my interest. Thank you.
luna Cycle carries them in the US. Or you can go through some chinese direct websites and get them imported, but having after sales support is why I chose luna.
The future of these type of bikes is gonna be so awesome, I can't wait

What about about a big guy? I’m 6’2’ 190lbs. Previously had 250 & 490 YZ.
As a kid I also owned a Yam 50 & 80cc.
Excellent review. Thanks for this.
Neat. I want to install that kickstand safety feature next time in my ebike build.
“I am John Holmes”. You are in a wrong video my friend.
Only the old timers like me will get the meaning of this. 👍🏼🍆😂
I'm not that old but I definitely know what he's talking about.
First off thanks for putting this thing on my radar, it looks awesome. 19x1.4 tires are a bit narrow, does it look like you can fit a wider tire on there, and if so how much wider? Thnx
stock tires are 70/100 (2.75 ish). Looks like the bike would fit 3.5" just fine, which is probably all you will be able to find.
HolmesHobbies nice that’s bigger that I thought from reading the specs, thanks!
15 mins and never rolled an inch? Does this rig go?
Well we know who didn't watch the entire vid now...
Then watch a test ride vedio not a review , ya duhhh
What do you mean the speed wire is cut? If it’s cut what do I do just connect it for the 45mph. That’s what I want sport 45mph all the time
What your name is John Holmes ?
Maybe his mom named him after her favorite actor?
Anyone know if this could be registered for road use in Australia?
How did you get it now, when LunaCycles says it will ship end of February?? I'm ordering mine by the end of this week! The price on Saturday was about $3,300. This week it's $3,474. I'm hoping it doesn't go up anymore before Friday!!
Got one from the first shipment right when they arrived.
Cool34900. Too much Money 🖓
Larry Jordan yeah I mean its not cheap. But its definitely a bang for your buck in the electric bike community
I’m 6’3” you think I can get one
Man I wish somebody would answer this. I’ve been asking on a hundred different vids
Good video bro you are probably the best reviewer I've seen. Keep it up .I want one here in Florida.lol
Thanks! Not every agrees with you here. Seems not every body agrees that reviews should have talking about the bike in question, lol
Do you wear your helmet sideways to ??? Lol
backwards for maximum cool
I'm only 1:41 into the video but I had to stop to give you props on that sweet golf basket!!!
My other hobby.
John Holmes...John Holmes, does it rings a bell ? ( Sorry, couldnt help it. You must be sick of listening to that )
Very good point on the spokes!
I'd love to get one,
Purchased from Luna Cycle. They call it the MX now it looks.
They had it as the MX for a while but now its just the Sur-Ron lol. Just keeps changing.
Thx for the reply. Look forward to a long term review and maybe a review of one of the 10-12k ones.
Wish I could afford something like that! Maybe down the road, I would go for an Alta or Zero full size motorcycle at that price point. Although there are lighter "mountain bike'" size ones at the same price too. Don't need another light bike though, the Sur Ron really fits the bill perfectly.
mattweisz . How fast can it go what the top speed 64hr
@@HolmesHobbies what's the range actually like on this bike please in real world conditions
Thanks for the review. You might want to do some more attention to detail about that front brake line . But I don't want to tell someone with your detail what to do . Thanks for the review . It was point on .
Great review!
Thanks :)
I'm looking to upgrade a powerwheels boomerang to 48v 1000w. Haven't found anything on it. Any ideas?
Not a crown a triple tree . just FYI If it is a motorcycle forks
Double crown, triple tree? The lower crown was the one with looser bolts.
Just my 2 cents.
they are just shuffling boxes at this point. Order them to the spec wanted, hope they are fine from the factory.
No respectable company will provide a battery that is not in "storage mode". What are you trying to say? The hardware is a different story.
The battery was dead on arrival. Watch the video.
MRBARBARYCOAST I saw that, but you mentioned the battery being charged. Thats a cheap bike. Lets see a tear down on the battery pack itself.
@HolmesHobbies If you can find out what the rear hub is us know. I new wheel set would change this bike completely!
Wath a big loop on the front brake cable. Lolll
yeah, it's been quite annoying. Can't really just zip tie it any better. Might have to chop it shorter and rebleed the brakes.
Ya I’d be a little concerned the thing might get brushed in and sucked up, then an OTB close up 🐜 view
Nice job on the video. Good info. Enough info without being too much. Well spoken and knowledgeable. Subscribed.
Ever take that thing over sweet jumps?
You got like 3 feet of air that time!!
#NapoleonDynamite
Not much yet besides jumping some stairs .
Ha Ha, loved that movie!
Can it be bought direct from Aliexpress (or Alibaba) and how is it for tall riders (6'1" 35" inseam)?
The way you were wearing your hat, I kept expecting you to bust out some "rymez".
I have been watching some killer videos of how much this bike totally rips and I appreciate your in-depth review. My friend just got one and it looks sick! I am concerned about the spokes and the tires but hopefully they will fix that. I think I might buy one.
And for the same price you can get a nice two stroke 125 or 250 and have that great smell.
Only downside is using them at night in town. I thrashed the back lot for a half hour saturday night past 9pm and didn't have the cops come. Couldn't do that on any of my gas bikes!
This is exactly why I want one! Late night riding with friends!
I’m not putting my address on RUclips... not that I’m worried about a bunch of soy boys anyways.
No actually I haven’t... I’m just fucking with you snowflake... I live in chapel hill if you wanna come find me. Lots of your kind live here you may just feel at home.
Are you in town? I just saw some pussy driving a Prius with his hipster moped (electric dirt bike) strapped to the back. Do you have a man bun?
1. What is the size of the dogs?
2. What is the height of the seat?
Thx.
Blowing them burms out ;-) Mo what part?
Columbia
Hell iv been to Columbia mo. Once when my sister stole my truck frm alton il thats were she left my shit but sweet review looks like a kick ass ride
In Missouri STL area. Got a place I could test ride one? I might be to big. 240 6'2" thanks...
I'm in Columbia. It's just my personal bike and I don't have a storefront, and honestly I'm not really keen to pass things off to strangers. 6'2 you might be a bit cramped. I'm 5 nine
HolmesHobbies Oh no, I was hoping for a dealer. Sorry about that. I figured I was too large for it, just excited for the price and power. Thank you.
Triple clamps! Is the correct terminology.
you think it'll benefit from a spoke "downgrade" to 13-gauge? how thick are the hub flanges?
It has actually held up very well, despite my reservations. The flanges are just tall enough, and the spokes just long enough, that it seems to be very balanced and not in need of relacing. No stress fractures have been evident on mine after a year of riding.
man, i can't belive people still wear those hats in 2018. xD
I had one in 82
still cool
It's a trend in 2099
Doesn’t go with the gray beard
First look for me. This looks great!. If i wasn't a city person i would get one for sure. Looks like it can be crazy fun off road in the woods jumping over stuff. 👍
I mostly ride mine in the city since it falls into the scooter/moped laws of missouri
Pretty cool!
Hey you! Hope all has been well.
Can't complain, hope the same is true for yourself.
Your camera guys really good.
Professionals. I claim no skills of filming.
it's very loud
The mic is about a foot away from the frame, on me. To a person standing to the side it's not loud at all, and really isn't loud to the rider either. But the mic does catch the frequency well. Newer bikes should have a controller with less noise.
No shit sherlock
Can you buy it directly from the sur-ron site? It looks like you could get alot better deal there.
If you speak chinese.
3300 Euro. No thank's!
You can build your own with that much amount
Really nice !! But how much does it cost to buy one !?? 😨😰
I won't bother checking the price a used motorcycle is most likely cheaper.
Does it have that much torque as my biggest question is if it will pull up a hill easily
Plenty of torque!
I will stick with my ktm my fosil fuel is less deadly to the earth than whats in that battery.
The Notorious Angler wrong
i thought ktm made an electric bike?
You're joking right? Thanks to fossil fuels, pretty much set that climate change will kill a billion people + by the time I kick it.
Can I ask how tall you are and what you would think about a 4' 10" female riding that bike? Are the shock and fork alterable or swappable for something with less travel?
5nine. Might be a bit tall for an under 5 foot rider.
More close up of the bike and less of your jibber-jabber
His jibber-jabber taught me stuff about wheel building
Hameed Khan Dr... doom.
Is it ok to have such a battery level of power next to your nads ?
My only concern would be EMF in the microwave frequencies, and the battery doesn't produce any EMF. In the case of a fire it would be directed to the top or bottom end of the box, and not sideways towards the legs.
Great review!! How tall are you? How much you weigh? I'm 6'-3" 230lbs would this bike be to small for me?
Really nice looking and I looked at price which was awesome. Do they ship to the USA or did you have it specially sent? I saw one that’s the white ghost and I’m asking them on price and if possible for sending to the States now. Your review on this bike has really peaked my interest. Thank you.
luna Cycle carries them in the US. Or you can go through some chinese direct websites and get them imported, but having after sales support is why I chose luna.
