Front truck doesn't cast a shadow, back truck does, so he would've clipped his back wheels had he gone straight-on. If I were him I would go back and get it clean to put the controversy to rest
We do need more tricks called out! This shit is funny, but so true. I love tyshawns skating, but he for sure didn't clear the table top. He absolutely went off to the side and they seemingly tried to hide that fact with a shitty camera angle. Maybe he'll go back and try it again and land it for real for real. its one thing to do that to some regular filler trick, but not on an NBD ender...
Imagine bei g old enough and not too jaded by the skateboard world to think "wow a sw ollie over a bench length ways" and think nothing more of it, maby enjoy the part? Skateboarding if full of fake shit end of the day, unless there's footy to go with a picture I'd say a good 60% of pictures aren't makes.. Sure we have video proof he did it but now we have a scientific break down about how he didn't do it straight on? 😂
People also have to realize that those school tables are small af to begin with. If your from the east coast or Midwest you gotta know those are about 1/3rd the size of a park picnic table. They’re for toddlers basically.
That’s what I would be massively impressed with. Someone setting up an adult sized picnic table next to one of those preschool sized ones (to make it a badass vid) and simply ollieing over it the “easy” way.
Super random but in high school one day this homeless (living by himself) hippy kid with dreads shows up and enrolls. He'd kick it with the skaters and wear high ankle work boots and a canvas like green jacket, anyways one day kids were jumping the traditional size picnic bench not long ways but sideways and this hippy kid with his heavy boots fully clears the bench and then some and does like a pure out of the movies ninja kick in the air. Everyone was pretty hyped up after that and we ended up stacking 2 skate decks on the table as a challenge and watched as he perfectly cleared it, kid made a group of friends that day and was quite a bit less homeless. Some people just have the jump and even heavy ass work boots aren't gonna stop them.
love this so much. really appreciate you stepping to one of the "unassailable" cool guys. TJ is undeniably an amazing skater; that said, to me many of his can tricks are dubious as only one set of trucks goes over the can, yet i still enjoy seeing them :P
Just look at his shadow, It's clearly over the top of the table when in still frame, even given the angle of the sun, that is definite proof he didn't clear the back of the top, but over the seat. Basic high school science, Angle of Incidence(The Sun) equals angle of reflection(Tyshawn) equals no NBD.
It seems even simpler to me. If you look at the front of the table before tyshawn ollies over or around it, you can see the destinct corner edges of where the front corners are established, and from there you can see where they start to run the length down the side of the table the long way. @4:19 you can clearly see where his back wheels are lower and on the side of the table top too because you can see where the front corner of the table starts, and to me looks like hes behind and to the side of it. However i do think his initial ollie was over the front highest point of the start of the table, but like you said, was not done in a straight on point A. To point B. He did drifft off a bit in his landing from the starting point.
yeah 100%. I think his diagram based on shadows was misleading because the sun wasn't at a perfect 90º from the bench (probs more about 60º), based on lines and shadows alone it can still be argued that he cleared full length just did a diagonal path across the table. but that frame is proof he didn't clear, not by that much but still.
@@clockworkcrimson i agree, im glad he did all that though cuz it was honestly hilarious. I thought he was gunna put the nail in the coffin at the end by pointing out what I stated in my comment, but he never did. People can say its petty and splitting hairs, but hes right in my opinion.

It was actually shot on a film set. The shadow on the side of table was caused by an abysmal overhead lighting job by one of the techs. Couldn't even clean it up in post. Definitely gonna need some reshoots for this one.
That doesn't even make sense. For one he's not being shown from the top of the clip. Its being shot caddy cornered and not from the top were not looking down on him.
I love the striking contrast betwixt this in depth analysis,- danke btw, -and the seemingly inobjective and blind acceptance by the 9club lads in their breakdown vid of this.
First thing I noticed when I saw the clip, lol. I do feel that an ollie over something huge but with a slight clip can add to the sickness - the street gap with the rail on the other end someone did recently comes to mind. But that's something else than ollieing a bit to the side of what you're trying to get over, especially if your whole thing is superhuman athlete's pop. I like Tyshawn's skating a lot and feel he brings something unique to skateboarding, but this is the kind of thing that can smudge an otherwise pristine career. Not in the order of Sheck's fantasy backside flip down El Torro, but 'all eyes on me' isn't an excuse for not using your own, either.

If you look at his shadow on takeoff, you can see that the shadow his board casts is perfectly in line with the shadow cast by the bench on the camera side. This means that the initial takeoff you diagramed was more than generous. In actuality he seems to have started his Ollie and landed his Ollie over the bench only. If you investigate further and see the height of the tabletop in comparison to the height of his knee upon landing, you will see that when he lands, on the skateboard, the tabletop is slightly below his knee height. If he were standing, this would be approximately knee height or slightly above. Furthermore, if you look at the height of the bench, relative to the height of the tabletop and adjust for angle, you can see the bench is approximately half the height of the tabletop. This means, Tyshawn effectively Ollie an object half of his knee height. In summation, Tyshawn switch Ollied an object shin high, for a distance of approximately 4 1/2 to 5 feet. I call whack ass shenanigans.
shit like this has been going on for ever in skateboarding. if you have watched enough skating you knew he didn't clear it. sketchy editing is a part of skateboarding. I appreciate the in depth look, good work. (edit - it doesn't take away from how insane the ollie was. he has set the bar very high and is one of my favorites. but its a deceptive angle.
It definitely takes away from how insane the ollie was if you go from clearing the tabletop to clearing the bench. Those are completely different obstacles. What on Earth are you smoking in order to equate those and say nothing is taken away between the two? Dude... 😂 I'm embarrassed for you that you would equate those. Do you even skate?
At 2:03 there's a frame where his back truck is the same height as the table top and it looks like half the board is already further out than the table. The angle probably makes it look like he's further out, but it's clear he's at the corner of the table, not the middle. The shadow of the truck is also right next to the shadow of the corner.
love the unhinged geometry lesson s/o Pythagoras. so the first argument relies on the red line *actually* being completely straight and fully parallel to the table right, a slight angle or bend throws off the optical evidence of where youre saying tyshawn ollie's from
Thank you, you went several notches beyond what I'd have to justify this - and that's what I love about this channel. Zeroing in on the right and wrong of it, whatever it is. This trick irked me from the instant I saw it. Far more than enough reason to be impressed by his ability on a board, but if the footage (in your soty season part at that) is claiming that you switch ollied a picnic table (probably the most consistent and replicable obstacle across all of professional skateboarding video parts in the U.S. - therefore arguably the best measuring stick of ability and general greatness across professional skateboarders)... and the footage doesn't convey that you did it with certainty, if it doesn't hold up to scrutiny, I mean, you might have done the biggest switch ollie ever, but what are you claiming, did you do what the footage is claiming you did? I think your take is right, no disrespect to Tyshawn, but I too feel it's got to be more definite than this clip.
It's true. I mean in this case it's also hard because you will get all the people hyping it up because it still looks epic (and is epic) but at the end of the day it's not proper enough to be a made NBD, this trick is still NBD for sure and I think most people who watched the part first time probably felt the same way they just didn't say it. People are also tripping saying "it doesn't matter", because this type of thing is basically the only thing that matters and is part of the job if you are a Pro skater. You could compare it to something like being a Pro football/soccer player and saying you scored a goal because the ball ended up in the back of the net, yet it failed to enter through the confines of the front of the goal.
For you not being a physics teacher this is absolutely incredible. I hope you win Louie SOTY. Pairing skateboarding with brain gymnastics... Who would have thought. I must say I love it a lot. Very gutsy, very convincing.
i work in film as a boom operator. the shadow thing is something i work around every single day of work. the shadow cast on the near side of picnic table indicates to me that tyshawn's skateboard is closer to camera than the near side of the picnic table. thus not 100% clearing the full deal. i still wear his shoes tho.
yeah he did the go off to the side thing...I realized that when I seen it but didn't go back and slow it down or anything like you've done here, I didn't really care...I'm not really big on doing straight flat ground tricks over things, I don't really understand the appeal, I think its cool to be able to pop a high and far flat ground trick over something, but its not my favorite kind of skating. Like a lot of people have done on trash cans etc in the past...idk why he took this one like this...but yeah, he didn't go completely over it...he went off to the side for the last couple feet and they used some angle trickery to make it look a little better. As I said, kindof like what numerous people were doing especially in the 90's and early 2k's going off to the side over things like trashcans and poles.
Cmon man you know this was the true ender, picnic tables are one of the most historical skate obstacles and I think most people watching wanted to see this the most
Dylans kicky was better in many ways, a gap is easier to clear with a bs rotation and dylan was pretty short so hucking up that would've been tougher imo.

Joa is a genius for this reaction to Zach Dowdy. Cant wait for the skatepark review next vid 🤣
Dowdy is a really nice dude so I hope it doesn’t end up in a big beef
What’s perfect is that Joa hadn’t really stopped making the videos that Zack was mentioning, he just posted them on Patreon
Who’s joa
My man out here basically doing the skate version of a soccer offside check
yeah he did the go off to the side thing...I realized that when I seen it but didn't go back and slow it down or anything like you've done here, I didn't really care...I'm not really big on doing straight flat ground tricks over things, I don't really understand the appeal, I think its cool to be able to pop a high and far flat ground trick over something, but its not my favorite kind of skating. Like a lot of people have done on trash cans etc in the past...idk why he took this one like this...but yeah, he didn't go completely over it...he went off to the side for the last couple feet and they used some angle trickery to make it look a little better. As I said, kindof like what numerous people were doing especially in the 90's and early 2k's going off to the side over things like trashcans and poles.
no one asked 💀
Your name doesn’t lie lmfao. You got that right for sure. This is a gifted level
It's beautiful to imagine your camera being totally dead and you still making this video by yourself
😂
When I saw the clip in his part for the first time I thought “damn he didn’t even really clear it” without any thought lol
The switch ollie wasn’t even his ender, it was a backside flip over the gap that was Dylan’s ender in cherry
your mom’s ending in cherry
Didn’t Dylan kickflip it?
Cmon man you know this was the true ender, picnic tables are one of the most historical skate obstacles and I think most people watching wanted to see this the most
Dylans kicky was better in many ways, a gap is easier to clear with a bs rotation and dylan was pretty short so hucking up that would've been tougher imo.
@@horrorskateboards i agree it was better but dylan seemed pretty tall to me
This is up there with analyzing the Zapruder JFK video. Well done.
Khan academy trick tutorial
So he fronted on the table & ollied the bench area that is lower on the landing side?
He just went live and dropped another attempt with a different angle, hating so gifted we got the actual trick.
You reminded me of my 3rd grade math teacher while drawing that table.
How much dill pay you to make this
i gained brain cells watching this
Maybe not a total make but I think it’s rad still also anything that gets mister Lopez soty he really deserves it
Mikey alfred really needs to snatch some of those diagrams, would make for a great graphic to put on those resanded decks.
TJ did this on purpose. He is holding out on the switch dolphin over the table
i agree. little ater give food for thought you saw with your own eyes from askew'd angle. when TJ switch flips it spot on in the to be continued he better give props to keenan in SOTY. i do hope he stays true to the game and don't go real estate tycoon. mark gonzales has forever been on brand never forget the greatest.
