- This aluminum fire ant colony cast is the largest of the five cast session and the largest one (by weight) that I have done so far. I was able to get a great cast of the above ground portion of the colony too, which isn't always the case.
This colony, and the others in the five cast session, were built in dense clayey soil. It took much longer to wash off the thick clay than is shown in the video.

I know that this video is quite old but some people don’t get that fire ants are an invasive species and very harmful to our ecosystems down in the south and the fact that you have found a way to slightly help with the issue and make beautiful art with it truly amazes me.

Well in the surrounding area there will be dead ants not yet fried. When those steam/smoke bursts come up that will not burn them also if they are still alive, it will kill them, but if its glowing red hot, then it will fri

Yeah. Good question. I thought it would be cool to see the tunnels of the above ground part of the colony in place. Also, getting the above ground tunnels filled is fairly difficult and since they got almost completely filled on this one I thought I'd wash away the dirt to get a good idea of how much I actually captured of it.
+Anthill Art Ohh, that makes sense. I thought it might have been for added grip or something since I think this one's one of the larger ones I've seen on the channel. But seeing the above-ground tunnels in actual compatrison to the ground level is damn cool

I really love these! Have you ever considered any other metals? Like perhaps brass (spent bullet casings) or the like? Maybe some prep-videos or your smelting furnace? I'd love to see some behind the scenes stuff as well as some new casting of other things! I loved the mushroom vid!

I am considering all of those things! The problem with brass or just about any other metal other than aluminum is that they're much heavier and take a lot longer to melt. So, doing a large ant colony with brass is unlikely but I probably will do a mushroom or something else with brass soon.

However ants were before humans walked on the earth, they come from a single ant Queen (which is their mother) and a another ant sprite (who later dies) together they make a kingdom of ants together they take shelter underground harvesting from dead and/or alive animals. If they could talk they would be saying "the world would be a better place one human at a time." Now that we made house's streets and street lights its harder for them to live and search for food since we are killing and capturing their prey and turning them to pets! I know I hated ants, I only kill them if they are in my house which isn't much of a problem. Type in Antscanada on youtube, that will change your views on ants forever.

I feel your pain. I live in the Southeast US, and I swear I always have at least a handful of fire ant mounds in my yard. Some of the mounds get MASSIVE, especially if it's been a wet season.

How do you calculate the amount of aluminum you need for these castings? I can't imagine that you'd just cook up 50 lbs. and stop when it pools at the top.
I tried to find a way to approximate the aluminum volume based on the hill size, but the size of the hill can be deceiving as to what's actually underground. So, basically if it's a very large hill I melt as much as my setup allows (about 30 lbs right now), and really just kind of scale it down from there for smaller ones and always try to overshoot. I probably wouldn't melt less than 12 lb no matter how small it was.
Anthill Art Makes sense to try to overshoot the amount needed.so it doesn't end up like casting 2 from your last video. But from what you're saying, it's pretty much just pour down a hill and hope you use most of what you brought with you?
+grandadmiralthrawn92 exactly. I included that cast 2 in the video mainly so I could show what happens when you undershoot. Even if you don't completely fill the colony, as long as you don't undershoot too much, it turns out pretty good.
Aluminum is not so expensive that he can't overshoot a bit, considering you can remelt it, and it probably pays for itself from whatever he sells the casts for, plus RUclips revenue.
Joseph DiSalvo I wasn't really worrying about the cost of aluminum. I go through enough cans of soda in a week to know that it's not too hard to get a lot, lol.

@@cunningmanray9910 Im assuming he is in the south part of the usa because his channel is in English and they are an invasive species there, they are from south America and were brought to the south of north America in the 1930s, so they shouldn't even be here. And even if they dont invade homes they still hurt a lot if you get swarmed and stung, and can even kill native birds and I think puppies and kittens. Also fire ants dont feel pain and don't have emotions so they aren't suffering.
