    Agree with it all but Harry's last statement on cost. My change to induction/ lithium originally cost me about $1000. DIY' lithium pack 280ah, bms and kings 1500w inverter. Granted I already had the dcdc and solar side set up but point me to a 4wder that doesn't have that anyway. Plus you get the benefit of the extra capacity for other items as part of the deal.

    Gas is king. So reliable and efficient. Induction seems to be a solution to a problem that does not exist, just a fancy new gadget to justify a fancy new (expensive) battery/charger/solar system.

    Gas is king. Had my gas cooker for 15 years, left out in the rain, turned upside down.... sounds like the only pro with induction is the wind factor..

    Butane stoves are awesome. Cans last a long time and burn hot and temperature control is awesome. The only problem is they dont work in winter when it's cold.
    I use gas. Easy, cheap, great temperature control, and doesn't require a $3000 12v system.
    Stick with gas. No point reinventing the wheel.
    If I have time I also like to cook on the fire.
    Induction makes no sense to me at all while camping.

      Excellent points, however;
      I've used gas ever since I was a young fella, initially propane but it's bulky, so switched to butane as compact and light.
      Cool temps were always an issue, breeze could be partially controlled by wind deflector BUT what pushed me over the edge into induction was a week's stay on east coast of K'gari, breeze wind was continuous, evenings and mornings cool enough to freeze canisters, it was just a pain in the arse.
      Purchased a induction cooktop, no issues quick cookups in any conditions, unplug, let it cool, wipe clean and place back in draw.
      Having said that I still carry butane for long slow cookups and to utilise our aluminium pressure cooker to achieve lovely tender meats.
      Expense doesn't have to be outrageous either.
      Our initial system was:
      Existing AGM batteries.
      They worked fine, used them for our coffee M/C, sandwich press, toaster but induction cooktop pounded them, they were too slow to recover for continuous use throughout the day into the night for lighting.
      Our system now contains:
      3 x Itech lithium drop in replacements, far quicker to recharge @ $1300 on sale.
      Our initial electrical:
      King's 1500w inverter, $199.
      Autobarn jumper leads $10.
      Add to that our Germanica induction cooktop $50 from Coles.
      So expense that works fine
      1300
      199
      10
      50
      $1559
      Today the Germanica units used at home and 2 X ALDI $50 units occupy the same space, more compact.
      They are not as efficient as the Germanica but utilise one on inverter only, and two when in van parks off of shore power.
      Still Cary the trusty butane unit.

      @@ianweal3081 $1500 expense to run 1 stove top?? No thanks. I understand theres a big push at the moment to go this way, but when a 2 burner stove and 2kg gas bottle can do the same (better) job for a fraction of the price. I'll be sticking with that for now.

    • @ianweal3081
      @ianweal3081 3 месяца назад

      Yes, that's okay but you have the bulk of it to transport, time to set up, time to pack away, yes been there done that. In comparison I pull out a 350 X 280 X 45 mm stove, plug in, cook eat, wipe down and re-stow in draw.
      Considering I'd already developed my electrical system to run coffee M/C, lighting etc the expenditure had already occured, but to run the induction cook top I preferred to update to lithium for restoration of power, could have possibly made do on AGM but I doubt it.
      My point was, you don't need to spend thousands as consistently pushed on RUclips channels.
      Who'd thought a Kings 1500w inverter would perform so well, I've attempted to update to supposedly better 2000w inverter and it struggles to run coffee M/C.
      Hence Kings 1500 reinstall.

      I personally think the induction crap is just a scam , when I first went camping as a kid we used the fire and I still use the fire today (I’m 62). To me coffee machines , induction cookers , air fryers , etc are robbing you of the camping experience ( same with starlink). It’s great for RUclipsrs starved for content to do shows about and electrical manufacturers to sell you a $6000 dollar lithium set up . I noticed Ian states the time it takes to use the induction is minimal , what’s the big rush for Ian ? I never rush while I’m camping ……isn’t that why you camp ? No stress no deadlines , relax……..P.S. I live in Victoria where you can cook over a fire year round (except total fire bans) .

    • @ianweal3081
      @ianweal3081 3 месяца назад +1

      It's butane that has the issue, not propane. Larger bottle usually indicates you're using propane.
      Butane gas units simply cease to work, remove canister, it's cold, replace with another canister, within 3 minutes you'll have zero flame heat again.
      Propane just continues to burn, usually a hotter flame also.
      Butane benefit is primarily they are compact & light and ideal above 10°C, useless in wind though.

Going camping, usually about 10 to 11k ft. The best solution I've found is an old coleman white liquid gas stove that you can pump to whatever preasure is needed. It burns like a hot as hell jet engin and, It's never let me down.

    Something I learned from working in engineering is to plan for redundancy by having backup for or duplicate anything you rely on. There are more than one way to cook and generate power while camping: fire (to fork?), gas burners or bbq, 240v hotplate, 240v induction hotplate, 240v air fryer, 240v electric frypan/rice cooker/pressure cooker. There are different energy supplies: gas, batteries, 240v/12v/solar charging, solar or petrol generator, firewood. I diversify my energy source and power generation so I switch to suit conditions. I have a caravan with 2 x 120ah old school AGM batteries for 12v power lighting, water pump and water heater, gas for internal and bbq cooking and off grid 3 way fridge, portable solar panels, Bluetti AC200p 2kva solar generator and 3.5 kva petrol generator for off grid 240v power. I've camped for months off grid and if you have solar, petrol, firewood and chainsaw, solar, batteries and generator nothing's a problem. Be prepared and be flexible. Don't adhere to one way of doing things. Electric Jesus is a fantasy. Cover all bases. Haven't needed an induction cooktop yet but I think it's useful if you have enough 240v power.

    • @WildTouring
      @WildTouring  3 месяца назад

      Absolutely, spot on! That’s why I personally think the idea of these all electric caravans you see coming out is crazy!

    • @ACTMCC3150
      @ACTMCC3150 3 месяца назад

      @@WildTouring Yes. There's a case for and a need for diversified energy sources and cooking methods. Two years ago I went to Carnarvon Gorge Qld for a week after wet weather and had to use a combination of solar panels, an Arkpac with 120ah AGM battery, Bluetti AC200P solar generator, 3.5kva petrol genie and fire cooking. Then I went to SA for 2 months and only need to run the genie for 1 day to recharge the caravan batteries and the Bluetti. So needs change depending on the weather, sunshine, cold and cooking. Be prepared. Prepare for everything, camp comfortably.

    I have the same Anko one and find it restrictive around 1600 W. Above that power level it almost always throws an error and stops working. My setting however, is purely domestic suburban. That cooker was bought to replace a better one that was destroyed by my brother-in-law who overfilled the kettle and when it boiled over, the electrics were drenched. I'm not sure why I still have the thing, two weeks after the drenching of the old unit my ceramic cooktop was replaced by a 4-element induction hob. I was using a single induction device because 2 of the 4 elements in the ceramic cooktop had failed.
    The previous single induction cooker (the drowned one) was able to work at its full power setting of 2000 W without the overheat error. It cost more than the $52 of the Anko unit.

  • @TheJanope13
    @TheJanope13 3 месяца назад

    Another thing that pisses me off with induction is how small the “burner” is. With a cast iron skillet the heat does not spread properly and only the middle heats up. Terrible. But yeah agree it works great for quick meals or cooking mediums with liquid like boiling pasta, stewing or deep frying. I have a gas range at home but use induction at home for those things and it works a treat.
    My setup 200ah lithium and 50A dcdc charger is more than capable for running it in touring style trips. But
    I’ve gone back to butane canisters as 2kg gas bottles are annoying to store in a wagon, really hard to find anyone that refills. It’s also almost the same price to refill as a 9kg bottle fil. Then if you’ve got a 1/4 left but need a bit for a trip they’ll still charge the full 2kg price.
    Swap and goes don’t even carry that style of gas bottle either.
    I’ve had to jerry rig up a hose to refill my own cylinders from the 9kg bottles though as you can’t beat lpg in the cold, especially camping up in the NSW/vic alpine regions

      No. You need a 1500W minimum inverter. And then you still can't use the cooker on its most powerful settings (1600,1800,2000w) and if you have a 100ah battery, it might not have a high enough continuous amp output rating for a 1500w inverter. Would recommend 200ah lithium battery minimum with at least 150 amp continuous output. I do most my cooking on 1000w and 1200w induction settings too btw.
