Her first hit song ‘Real Love’ had just come out. I got the impression she was very depressed. The second encounter was in the lobby of Puffy’s Daddy’s House studio on W. 44th street. I was an engineer at Streetlight studios which was in the same building. Once again, she was in a very dark place (we can easily speculate why). I spoke casually with her on both encounters. The third encounter was at the Beacon Theater when I was working for BET News and she was with her mother. It was a huge charity venue and she was very upbeat and happy. I’ve never spoken to ANYONE about this except my wife, and that was about a week ago after this whole Puffy thing broke. There it is… take it for what it is worth.

Also there are thousands of rap groups who get these deals and the larger companies just use them for tax write offs and have no intention of putting their material out or pushing it. It wasn’t that uncommon to be recording some dude and months later to see that same brother on the subway asking for change. So these companies make money on both ends whether a group wins or loses. One other point, the cream doesn’t always rise to the top. There are so many talented young artists out there who have dropped tracks that are absolutely the ‘bomb’, but never get heard by the masses. I engineered for about 15 years, couldn’t take it any more and now I’m a farmer down south.
