  • Hiking the Western Arthurs Traverse from Alpha Moraine to Kappa Moraine in South West Tasmania. The Western Arthur Range is well known for its challenging and arduous terrain, amazing views and spectacular mountain peaks. I spent a week hiking the Western Arthurs range, passing through Lake Oberon and climbing numerous abels and mountains in the area including Mount Hayes, Mount Sirius, Mount Orion, Mount Alderberan and Mount Scorpio.
    On one of the nights, we experienced a brocken spectre from a knoll just outside of Lake Sirona - an amazing but rare optical phenomenon.
    The Western Arthurs is the best wildness hike I have experienced yet!
    Shot with the Sony A7C (20mm F1.8 GM), and Deity (V-Mic D4 Mini) microphone.

    Great video Aaron.
    It brought back fond memories of when I did it in 1987. I rate it as my best hike ever (that includes all the Great Walks in NZ) because of the duration, remoteness, difficulty and spectacular scenery.
    There were no duckboards and tent platforms back then. I don't recall the tracks being anywhere near as distinctive when I did it.
    Like you, we had great weather. We carried 14 days of food to allow for bad weather, which we didn't get, so we had to make a decision: to walk out early or stay for the full 14 days. We chose the latter, camping at each site for 2 nights.
    There was no such thing as lightweight gear back then. I carried 34 kg and I only weighed 66 kg back then.

      Thanks David! It’d have to also be the best hike I’ve done to date. I can imagine it was much tougher back in 1987- not only due to the tracks but the gear loads. I think my load would have been in the 16kg area. I can’t even imagine carrying 34kg 🤣. Hoping to get onto the Eastern Arthurs next year!

    Hi Aaron, I've been really impressed with your videos of Girraween. And now you have done videos of some great hikes in Tassie. This video is so much better than the garbage photos I took when I last trekked Western Arthurs. I hope you get some more footage, the view from Mt Ann summit would be great to see, and Frenchman's Cap is amazing too. Keep up the excellent work.

      Hey Chris, appreciate that thanks! I have another video of the Tyndalls Range in Tasmania coming soon.
      Unfortunately I probably won’t get another chance for another Tassie trip until the end of the year. Mt Anne circuit is definitely high up on the list, as is the Southern Ranges (Precipitous Bluff).
      Cheers for the feedback 👍

    Hi Aaron, great video! I think you met a group of us who were doing Teviot to Spicer’s recently (2/9/23) when we were on Panorama Pt having lunch. Was that you? Some of us are planning to do the WAT in Jan. How does it compare to Teviot to Spicers (more technical I know and high chance of bad weather)? Apart from overnighters up Barney (maybe via Logan’s) are there other things we could do in SE Qld to prepare?

    • @AaronGrayOutdoors
      @AaronGrayOutdoors  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks! Yep, that was me. Awesome, I hope you get good weather! Whilst it has technical climbing there’s a well defined footpad / cairned route the entire way. There’s also plenty of water which certainly helps. Yeah, probably Barney. Have fun out there!

    What are the things you are wearing on your ankles for?

    • @AaronGrayOutdoors
      @AaronGrayOutdoors  Год назад +1

      They are gaiters. They protect your legs from scrub and mud and offer additional protection against snakes.

    • @LukesLens
      @LukesLens Год назад

      @@AaronGrayOutdoors Gotcha. Are snakes pretty prevalent in this area?

    • @AaronGrayOutdoors
      @AaronGrayOutdoors  Год назад

      They are around but we didn’t see any. As with most hikes in Tasmania, gaiters are generally recommended.

    • @LukesLens
      @LukesLens Год назад

      @@AaronGrayOutdoors Cool. Would you say more so because of the snakes they are recommended or just because of the shrubbery?

    • @AaronGrayOutdoors
      @AaronGrayOutdoors  Год назад +1

      Mud and shrubbery is there main purpose. I hope that helps!
