I’m not gonna lie, everybody talks about the beta being dark and gritty, but if we’re being for real you could say that about the retail version too. I think what makes the beta so interesting is the fact that it’s got a similar feel to the dystopian novels that inspired HL2 in the first place.
I think the retail version was better because the dystopia was not as completely obvious and left it open for the players to discover just how horrifying the truth is instead of shoving it in their faces. But man the beta was art. I wish it was explored further but Valve does not like sharing anything about their development processes.
