Early Music Missouri kicked off its 2023-2024 season with a concert featuring string music from the French court. Performed by Samuel Breene (Baroque violin), Sarah Biber (viola da gamba) and Jeffrey Noonan (theorbo), Jacques Morel’s “Chaconne en trio” opened the concert.
Viola da gambist Jacques Morel (fl. c.1700 - 1749) studied with Marin Marais - the greatest of the early composer/players for the instrument - and dedicated his collection of viol solos to his teacher. Morel’s Chaconne en trio offers a wonderful example of the French version of the chaconne, an essential dance in French opera and ballet. Lully and his French contemporaries interpreted Italian music, including the popular ciaconna, for the French court by constraining its emotional excesses to match the more formal French tastes. And so, the very French chaconne remains rhythmically active, but more restrained than the Italian or Iberian versions. Morel’s Chaconne en trio is sprightly, clearly sectionalized, and quite formal, yet it also features a refined toe-tapping pulse.
