I'm biased, but I'd personally argue he should be 3rd. There's a huge drop after the top 3 in points/game in this draft class, with Jake Guentzel being up there with the top 2. He has scored goals at nearly the same rate as _MacKinnon_ since he came into the league. There are 4 40 goal seasons from this draft class, and Guentzel has 2 of them. He also, like MacKinnon, elevates his game for the playoffs. He had a ridiculous 1.75 p/gp (best in his draft class) in 2018, 13 goals in 2017 (tying MacKinnon last year for best) and is at exactly 1 p/gp (2nd to only MacKinnon) for his career in the playoffs. I get that offense isn't everything, but Guentzel isn't a bad defender either. He's trusted enough to match top lines and never get sheltered. He's good enough that his defense shouldn't drag him down. He's also definitely not a product of Crosby, his production didn't slow down even when _Evan Rodriguez_ was his center early on last year.
Thank you all for this. Like the Jets, Shannon has a "blind spot," in his words, for Bo Horvat. He has ... a "sight patch," I guess, regarding Guentzel especially. He hinted at it here and has stated in the recent past that Guentzel is not a star apart from Crosby and Malkin--even with the aforementioned time carrying the load while they were out and the resulting boost to Rodrigues, who weirdly hasn't been signed, gee! By no means do I expect perfection or that anyone will agree on everything, but what will it take regarding Guentzel?

Despite being put in difficult situations against the top players from around the league more often than other “top” d men, Nurse’s underlying numbers remain very solid. I understand why Shannon would not want Dallas to take Nichushkin again. But, it appears that the Avs selected Nichushkin over Burakovsky in 2022 free agency. The Avs gave Nichushkin a huge contract while letting Burakovsky walk.
Different players and different needs. Burky is very streaky. He was healthy scratched during the playoffs at points. Lekhonen was also brought in as insurance against the loses of Burakovsky and Kadri (not entirely each, but he will take Kadri's PP spot and Burakovsky's 2nd line spot).

He literally took Nashville from being a "fringe chance of winning a game or 2" in every pool with him in to "not a fucking chance they even win a game" with him out. Easily a top 10 goalie. If he was 3-4 inches taller, he'd be top 5 on every list.
As a Sabres fan who has watched every game of Ristolainen's career I would bet my house he doesn't fall to #22 on a redraft if it were possible for it ever to occur. There's just no way. He's a very solid NHL defenseman. He was the #1 for the Sabres on historically bad teams. I don't know where he would go, but I find it very hard to believe NHL general managers would let him slip much from 8. He's huge, has some offensive side to his game and is not afraid to mix it up. I might be crazy but I would put guentzel et saros in the top 5. Buchnevich seems low especially seeing him under mantha. It’s hard because this draft is ridiculously deep, but yeah there’s a few guys that seems low for me.
No issues from me about this redraft for the most part. As a Flames fan and a Bo Horvat fan I’d definitely take him over Nurse, but that just my preference on that pick. Hope for all the best with Monahan though in Montreal and going forward with his career. Solid, really good player when healthy and hopefully he can get back to being healthy again and have a good comeback with the Canadiens this year.
I love Horvat, he’s my favourite Canuck. But I would not complain about Guentzel. The Schneider trade saved this draft from being another Mike Gillis masterclass in futility.
I think that's too low for Monahan. Until he got injured, he was 1st in goals for the draft class. As it stands now, he is 3rd in goals and 3rd in points. I would bet that there won't be 23 players who finish their careers with as many goals or points. Tough one to weigh out here considering that points aren't everything. However, being the 3rd best goal scorer and likely not dropping to 23rd even if he retires today, I think that's too big of a reaction to his injury. Nurse is too high on this list I think as well - not sure he moves up a spot, as I do think there have been players pushing from below that are probably more valuable. Ristolainen going to the Flames is interesting, as the Flames' analytics guys have Ristolainen has the label "Do not acquire" by them - means nothing with regards to this redraft, but it is funny that he ends up in Calgary. Interesting takeaways here though. This draft year may have just as much movement in a future redraft in another 5 or 10 years.
A lot of changes that I would personally make. I would have Guentzel, Saros, Weegar, Monahan & Lehkonen all drafted higher than they are and I would have Jones, Nurse, Mantha, Bertuzzi & Ristolainen all drafter lower
Not bad list but idk why Pesce is so high. He’s a good defenseman but he hasn’t been nearly as elite as players like Guentzel and Saros, and I would definitely take him probably past 20th. But I never looked at the advanced stats so I could be wrong.

I feel like the other players are these great forwards and defenseman that have had really amazing seasons whereas pesce is just a good defenseman. But I never looked at the advanced stats so I could be wrong.
Remember guys, it’s all for fun you can disagree but still be respectful
A very minor thing, but it's actually Aleksander Barkov, not Alexander.
Or just Sasha...
He should be first on the redraft
@@Jman-cx4bd that is a hot take!
@@hanslamontagne is it tho he just put up the same amount of points in the same amount of games as mackinnon whilst being third in selke votes. It’s not a hot take it’s just that he’s underrated.
@@Jman-cx4bd I like his overall game but find McKinnon to be someone who can put an entire team on his back, he’s explosive and the leadership qualities are what move the needle for me. I can’t see Barkov kicking the dressing room door in and rallying the troops like Nate does. Frankly, I would be ecstatic to have either but that’s just how I’d do it.
Habs legend Jonathan Drouin.
Jake’s gotta be 3 or 4
You can argue Barkov vs Mackinnon and you can definitely argue everyone after that.
If you really wanted, you could argue Colorado has 2 players more valuable than MacKinnon..
Makar and ?
@@aamocryp Rantanen probably
Barkov is so underrated, says literally everyone so we all just agree he is one of the best in the league
Based on all your redrafts it would be interesting to go through the new rosters
Lindholm #3, Guentzel #4, Horvat #5, Theodore #6, Nurse #7, Pesce #8, Jones #9. Guentzel might even be 3rd actually... but its close
WAIT what jarry, weegar, Saros and buchnevich are also wayyyy to low. Definitly your worst redraft
Jones is better than nurse better offensively better passer shooter play driver bigger stronger slightly less better in transition good 1PP option nurse is like a 1PP B option more of a 2PP guy defensively they are similar in impact I can’t see his value being lower to what he brings to the table than nurse
@@marcussilva4011 lol
@@marcussilva4011 its close for sure
Mine would be:
1. Mackinnon
2. Barkov
3. Saros
4. Guentzel
5. Theodore
6. Lindholm
7. Weegar
8. Pulock
9. Jones
10. Morrissey
13/30 players originally drafted outside the 1st round, a lot of underwhelming/busts in round 1 but good finds in later rounds
It’s hard to rank from 3-13 (top two are clear). They could go in any order for the most part
Nurse shouldn't be a 1st round .
Judging by the comments, Horvat is still very underrated. He’s everything you want a C to be. Ever since he said he models his game after Toews, I’ve always paid extra attention to him.
I don't think people realize that Guentzel is the first 40 goal scorer Crosby's ever had on his wing, and he's gotten that many twice now
Guentzel is at the very least Top 5 in this draft
avs sure love that 2013 draft
surprised you have Drouin in top 30.. I would not. never lived up to expectations, never goes into the corners, can not handle pressure cause he was babied from an early age
It's ok hockey guy, I would take Burakovsky anyway cause of the extra cup ring so it makes sense
saros at 13 is just disrespectful i can’t understand it
That Avalanche hat. I need one like that
Deep draft indeed!
Remember when many Florida fans were mortified (and basically everyone else were scratching their heads) when Florida took Barkov over Drouin and Seth Jones? Turns out those scouts really were on to something there.
So bad for Barkov. He could be in Tampa now (Tampa wanted a center).
This time next year I think Saros would be taken #3
Horvat at 7😭😭😭
Solid draft year. I'd have Lindholm ahead of Theodore.
Guentzel is too low, and also there is absolutely no way the Habs should choose anyone other than Lehky at 25 since he was still available, also Douin may be a headache but 29th is a bit of an insult considering several ppl who were put ahead....yeah this one is weird man
I love how if you factor in each if these redrafts, the jets would have hellebuyck, Gibson, and sarros 🤣🤣
Peace before Guentzel?
Shannon, it's been a couple years since your 2014 redraft and a lot has changed. Can we expect that soon hopefully?
Only one I think is too high is Ristolainen. Barring his bad year in Philly, yes he's tough, but weren't his advanced stats trash when he was in Buffalo too? I would at least take Monahan over him personally.
I would move Copp up, but maybe I'm one of those mentioned who overrates him. I did like his game when he was in Winnipeg too though.
He has recent injuries but I’d prob have monohan above burakovsky
Not a big fan of Nurse, PERSONALLY I would switch Guentzel (as a Flyers fan so no Pens-bias) and Nurse
Tyler bertizzi; heavily underrated
Good video as always, although I would put Saros top five
I would've put Guentzel above horvat an dumped Pesce/Horvat down 1. I see why you put him there though
oh naw we dissing guentzel like crazy he should easily be 3/4
Mantha and burakovsky above buchnevich is crazy
Yeah thats definitely a no thanks on darnel nurse, i might take literally anyone else
Almost certainly EDM fans would trade Nurse for Juuse Saros in a heartbeat! lol even if the Cap hit was the same.
Domi should definitely be up there bro
Hell, is Monahan can't play for Montreal, they'll still have a good first round pick out of the trade :D
Guentzel this low is a crime, 2 time 40 goal scorer and a ppg player. I would take him at 3
For those curious about why their team was missing from this list, here are all of the trades for first round picks in 2013 (via wikipedia):

The condition - Dallas will receive a first-round pick if Boston advances to the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals - was converted on May 25, 2013.
Will you do 14 aswell?
I think you've got Monahan too low as well. You've got him below a guy whose career points per game is 0.42, meanwhile Monahan had 6 seasons with a PPG between 0.68 and 1.05. You'd really pass on a guy at 21st overall who could be your 1st line C for 6 years before you have to replace him in order to draft a career 2nd/3rd line guy (who, we still don't know, could also be done in 3 more years)?
Seattle Kraken well represented with Burakovsky, Bjorkstrand, and Wennberg.
There’s no way in hell anyone has Nurse above Horvat
Why not?
@@russiants1668 because horvat has consistently gotten better since his rookie season. Has put up 31goals last season has a decent ppg, and more importantly has been a beast in the playoffs. 4 points in 6 games in his rookie season in the playoffs. And then taking the team on his back to stomp St. Louis and had a very solid playoffs. Not to mention both times the canucks made it, they really had no business being there…
It was fun!
Number 3 overall, Macks juniors bff, drouin
Not bad, I don’t think I could actually justify putting Drouin in the first round though…
Mack is the savior for the Avs
Horvat should go higher than Jones and Nurse. Pesce ahead of those two D, too. Swap Copp and Bertuzzi
