I think the reasoning for it being kind of a more boring show is because 2017 was so good that they had to bring their shows back down so they can build it up again, it would have been even more dissapointing to have a show that tried be better than metamorph and failed. I have high hopes for this year
Victrap Animations yes ghost light is going to be amazing they did part of the opener and ballad and the soloist and the hotline in general sounded amazing
You're honestly right. I've always know bd kinda did something like that but honestly could never put my finger on it and it bugged me for a few years. I don't think they wanted a repeat of 2016 and have a show that basically nobody remembers except for the ones who actually really loved it(me being one of them). Thanks for pointing it out!! I feel alot better now that I actually know what they do
I disagree. In any year, I'm sure they produce the best product they can, given any constraints they may have in any year, including budget, staff and membership. Musically, this year was more interesting than the previous year and the musicianship was a little better, too. The biggest problem with this show was the ending. The ending was not exciting musically and it didn't wrap up this show well. I didn't like the bland B-flat root and fifth chord that they ended on in the previous year, either, and this was similar but on E-flat, and even less exciting. The ending should have been rewritten. But, the execution and musicianship of the show was excellent.
This brilliant show includes (0:13) a rip-roaring gangster assault on the audience, a (9:01) bra-burning, a (6:24) brawl in a love triangle, and a (11:23) live re-creation of a classic 1941 painting.
Is it just me or does the crowd seem completely unenthused about what they are watching? I Caught Vanguard a few nights before at the TOC before DCI East and I haven't felt that much excitement in a crowd in a long time. There is a reason why SCV damn near swept all the caption awards.
Harlem Nocturne had some crowd resonance, but the other set pieces lacked stand up and cheer moments. The opening was supposed to be a balls out fortissimo gangster style assault on the audience, like nothing the activity had ever seen-- a direct response to the accusation from last year's audience that BD was too "park and blow". It was supposed to be a tidal assault of rich, penetrating sound and rapid fire marching. It sounded like ass. The show design was a sophisticated take on a "behind the scenes of an historical event". We learn the backstory of each of the players in the painting, which is fun. But by the end of the show, what's the takeaway? Do we care more about the woman at the counter? We know her backstory now and...? The only interesting tidbit is that Carole King, the composer of Natural Woman was born the year this painting was completed. So other than a feminist message in a traditional male dominated painting, this show had no oomph, no underdog likability in the lead character. This is easy to fix. Just start the whole thing out with her getting a punch in the face by that other guy at the counter. Instantly we're on her side and we fight like hell for her. First place.
I disagree lol most of the time when you watch the Blue Devils, you are usually just fascinated with how unique their playing style is 😳 well at least I am ☠️
I was there that night and yeah, this section of the crowd was dead. The section I sat in, toward the far right, was much more enthusiastic (probably because there were more younger people in the section lol)
8:32 The right side 35 yard line "map" shows a female figure standing with arms raised. You can see her silhouette in the ocean shading space between the continents.
I thought the blue Devils show was OK but just that it seems as though the staff tried to put too much theme in the show The Vanguard was the best show I've seen all year
That has been an issue through most of their history going back to the 1970s. That hasn't been true in every year, though, but they were often top heavy back in the G bugle days because their sopranos usually had a fatter sound than most of the other corps. I blame that on the Claude Gordon / Benge mouthpieces on which the sopranos standardized which had a larger throat opening than standard trumpet mouthpieces.
12:26 The final pose is a museum, essentially. Museumgoers looking at the painting and trying to interpret it. Perhaps their perspective is changed, now that they know the background of the ingenue, and her strength.
I'm doing a series called DCI Show Reviews and this is my next review... I can kind of see why this show was SOO boring... I felt nothing when this show came out. Coming off of Metamorph, this show was a huge let down for this corps in 2018. Thankfully Ghostlight came in and saved the corps in 2019. Heres hoping that in 2020, we can see back to back champs
It's boring for you perhaps because the lead character in this show is female. It's a feminist POV. Don't bother reviewing it if you don't understand it.
Holly V did the 1973291 High C’s that this show had not make you cringe? That Vanguard screamer was one of the highest of all time, that’s what makes it impressive. Vanguards show was better in all ways this year, opener to closer. Just my opinion though
Dylan Le Lerre Um.... an amplified squeak is most certainly not the same as having a full sound. For you to pretend like that was something spectacular is completely asinine. With that being said, SCV definitely deserved 1st.
I actually really loved this show.
Thank you Ryland Cook, I am inclined to agree
the first 2 minutes reminds me of old school BD (pre 2014) and I miss it so much
Micah Lall-Trail your right but 2014 is they best Show Ever You can’t Deny that
Laura is also just such a gorgeous standard and I loved the way it was arranged
Damn this was a good show. Prefer this hornline writing than most of their past shows
The tenor feature is at 9:37
I used to hate this show and now it’s one of my favorite shows of last year. Still don’t get why it gets hate.
Your it the only one.
I love it as well. Blue devil shows tend to be like that. They age like fine wine and take time to appreciate.
5:06 Joey is an absolute beast
Not as good as Javier
Perhaps, he still amazing
@@thereddragon4508 they are different styles, Javier has more control, but Joey has more power, he's more like a screamer trumpet player
Plus Joey had like 6 solos packed into this thing
Thank you for posting

I really like dreams and nighthawks. Say what you will, but this show is really creative. The backstory is awesome

I like how bd vids always have scv elitists in the comments
Exactly
BD is living rent free in another organization’s fanbase 😬
I find it cool that the closer was the same for the 09 opener
woouuuww, that part with the indian konnakol!
wow great crowd lol

It was a small crowd in a big venue. Also, some East Coast crowds are really polite and don't like to interrupt.
luke snell the band/“cool kids” people are dying

That’s what I’m think

This hornline 👀 much better than 2019
9:37
Last years show was better for the blue devils
Honestly I agree
i think many people would agree with rhat
And 2019 too
12:10 impact is nuts
their closer is similar to metamorph’s closer. not bashing but i think it’s cool
Someone should make a video showing the vibe sheet music to metamorph
Johnny DaSuper exactlyyyy
R.I.P Aretha Franklin😢
I thought the blue Devils show was OK but just that it seems as though the staff tried to put too much theme in the show The Vanguard was the best show I've seen all year
How tf they got second I will never know
Derpturttle 42 I didn’t see vanguard but apparently they won
They came second cause vanguard put their heart and soul into it Kappa
All of you listen to vanguard and you will know how😂
Haha I meant I didn't like the show
See Vanguard.

I hate how bd has so little low brass sound

8:03 👌
1:12
Their snares from 2:30-2:35... I’m actually pretty disappointed in that dirt 😅 haven’t heard anything like that from BD in a long time
Don't worry this year there show is huge man there as loud and good as they were back then this year trust me
Christian Ramirez yes indeed did you see the horn line when they did the opener and ballad? That was amazing
i dont get the micheal jackson part
It was to introduce the "Smooth Criminal" character in the show. One of the four figures in the diner in Edward Hopper's painting "Nighthawks".
What's the song at 1:28
Laura by Stan Kenton
@@Fartknocker0990 thank you!!!! I've waited like a year to find out
The part 10:56 sounds a lot like something else I’ve heard before but I can’t remember what it is. Anyone know?
12:26 The final pose is a museum, essentially. Museumgoers looking at the painting and trying to interpret it. Perhaps their perspective is changed, now that they know the background of the ingenue, and her strength.
You always bring interesting insight into these shows and I always look forward to your interpretations.
Who are those guys running around in black shirts and khaki pants on the field?
the judges
HIT THEM
After recent news this comment makes me smile...a lot
I didn’t get any goosebumps as I did from 2017 and 2019 :(
Did the electronics cut out in the last minute of the show?
I'm not sure I thought it was a part of their new closer but there is a strange bit of silence at 11:23 in my opinion
French 4got to come in
It fixes itself in finals
This show should've gotten 4th. Honestly every judge this year in DCI was just being unfair
This show was demanding af lmao, and clean. Wym 4th
Hey look. Its metamorph 2
Eh I wouldn’t say that
Tyler Dunphy The writing and style is similar and I love it
This is nothing like Metamorph lmao what?
what’s with the excessive use of whole tone scales and diminished 7th chords😂

The closer is so lame lol
In the finals, the closer, when after the tenor closer, when all brass got together gave me the biggest chills, idk about you, but man was that yummy
Carlos Carlos H. Idk why in this video they cut out the end trumpet solo was it not in the show yet?
Women are lame.
@@ExoSuckssdidn’t cut it, mics just didn’t work, you can still hear Joey scream that double G when everyone stops playing
I’m surprised Santa Clara vanguard won this year. I cringed at their squealing trumpet 😳

Dylan Le Lerre Triple E
My nigga I'm sorry that double c takes pure skill and was amazing plus it's not squealing its screaming
