- Anscheinend gelingt mir bei jedem Besuch in den USA die Besichtigung eines alten U-Boots! Im Jahr 2017 habe ich mir das deutsche Typ IX U-Boot U 505 in Chicago angesehen, 2024 führte mich die Reise nach Manitowoc in Wisconsin, wo die USS Cobia, ein amerikanische U-Boot der Gato Klasse, den Besuchern offensteht. Das Boot ist eines der Glanzlichter des Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
Vor allem der Innenraum ist in einem sehr guten Zustand. Da man sich fast frei an Bord bewegen kann, bekommt man einen tollen Einblick in die Technik und das Leben der Besatzung während der Einsätze in den Weiten des Pazifik. Alles ist so arrangiert, als ob die Besatzung gerade erst ausgestiegen wäre. Die Präsentation war dermaßen Eindrucksvoll, dass ich nun mit dem Gedanken spiele, mich dem Thema auch mal modellbauerisch anzunehmen.
Wer also während eines Aufenthalts an der Westküste des Lake Michigan Zeit für ein paar Ausflüge hat, der sollte sich die USS Cobia und auch U 505 auf jeden Fall anschauen!
Ich hoffe euch gefallen die Impressionen, die ich bei meinem Besuch einfangen konnte. In dunklen und engen U-Booten gute Photos zu machen ist leider nicht ganz einfach, ich hoffe euch gefällt das Ergebnis trotzdem!

It appears like i get to visit an old submarine every time i go to the USA! In the year 2017 i saw the German Type IX submarine U 505 in Chicago, in 2024 my journey led me to Manitowoc in Wisconsin, where the USS Cobia, an American submarine of the Gato Class is accessible for visitors. The boat is one of the highlights of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
The interior in particular is in very good condition. Since you can move around on board more or less as you please you get an amazing view on the engineering and the life of the crew during the voyages in the Pacific. Everything is arranged in such a way, as if the crew has just disembarked. The presentation was very impressive, so now i entertain the thought of dealing with this subject as a scale modeller as well.
Those of you, who happen to have time during their stay on the western shore of Lake Michigan for a few tours, should visit the USS Cobia and U 505 for sure!
I hope you enjoy the few impressions i took there during my visit. Taking good photos in dark and narrow submarines is not easy, but i hope you like the result anyway!

USS Cobia (SS/AGSS-245) is a Gato-class submarine, formerly of the United States Navy. Cobia was designated a National Historic Landmark for her service in World War II, which included service in the Pacific, where she earned four battle stars. She is now a museum ship at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Awesome that you had the chance to visit this vessel. Many many years ago, I had the privilege of getting to sleep on board it as a boy scout. Been thinking about revisiting it again sometime.
I was very happy about the opportunity to go there, a very memorable experience! I heard that one can rent the sub, glad you got to do it and spent some extra time there :) So cool and unique!
I also heard that it is planned to move the boat into dry dock for a major restoration, which might take some years to complete. You better visit it again sooner than later!
Evans cackle at the end is my favorite part. I'll be uploading mynvideo shortly hopefully.

I liked the town a lot and the museum is amazing :) We had a great time there and had lunch at the Fat Seagull, if that rings a bell. Ate some Curt-Memorial-Cheese Curds :)

What a coincidence indeed haha! Gato class subs are certainly an interesting subject.

Well worth the trip, went to that over the summer, much better than U505 in Chicago
I like the fact that this one is still sitting in water :)
But then again that was 25 years ago I believe made lots of improvements, I dislike Chicago and won't go back.. shithole city.
Great video, nice exterior and interior photos, very interesting!! I believe Hobbyboss has a Gato class submarine, but it is very tiny. You would no doubt prefer something a bit larger and more detailed.. 😊 Great gun handling at the end, shame it wasn't a Bofors... 😂😂

sehr cool. sieht irgendwie alles geordneter und übersichtlicher aus als auf einem deutschen oder geschweige denn russischen u-boot.
Das ist auch klar, denn die U-Boote der Gatoklasse sind deutlich größer, daher ist im Innenraum nicht alles so gequetscht. Trotzdem wäre das nichts für mich :) Das Typ IX Boot ist innen schon sehr heftig, das Typ VII Boot muss noch viel ärger sein. Da war ich aber noch nicht drin.
Habe gerade auch das Video von Adam gesehen, war wohl insgesamt ein "bieriger" Ausflug 😁😁
Der Eindruck täuscht, das war nur für ein paar Tage in Madison der Fall und auch da nicht sehr exzessiv...die kleinen Bierfläschchen erlauben keinen großen "Durckaufbau" :D Lief alles ganz zivilisiert ab :)

I was never inside a submarine, but I admire a lot the courage of sailors who spend days/months/years of their lifes living inside a tube below the water... really not for me 😅
Agreed, i would prefer to not sail across oceans at all to be honest :)
