The paladin is more defensive than the fighter because: 1) They have better saves, 2) They get armor of faith, 3) They can cast death ward / negative plane protection, 4) They can cast draw upon holly might. The last one also offensive since they increase their strength as well as their dexterity and constitution. With mods paladins eventually can cast divine shield, and entropy shield which is huge.
True, plus you can’t deny that buying nice things is much easier as a Paladin with a high Charisma and tendency to get a good reputation. That leads to good armor and weapons picked up all along the way, helping their survivability.
The thing about Inquisitor is that with the caster level penalty of the paladin, the loss of spellcasting really only starts to hurt significantly in TOB levels. Before spell hold, your innate DUHM will be far stronger, and shield of faith only really has a big impact at high caster levels when stacked with other forms of damage reduction like hardiness. 10% damage resistance on its own is seldom decisive. Outside of these two personal buffs, the spellcasting is made completely obsolete by clerics who will have a huge number of level 1-4 spell slots by late game or even just a Planetar. And turn undead and lay on hands are frankly no meaningful loss. If you have a cleric, they level faster and get +2 to their effective level over a paladin on top of that and lay on hands is a once per day single target heal that heals for crappy amounts of health relative to your level anyway. The immunities are really good, particularly at low levels where saves are poor and these effects are very deadly and the ability to nullify illusions and use a supercharged dispel with a very fast cast time are both fantastic abilities. As for it being a double edged sword, you can learn to aim it where this will be a problem (and sometimes, you absolutely will want to dispel your own party). I know SCSC makes mages a (in my view not very fun) battle of attrition, but in the base game, Inquisitor dispel trivialises what are otherwise very deadly enemies at low to mid levels.
I know Anomen is only a fighter-cleric with the possibility of being only a knight, but man it is nice when I get those gloves of dex. Even with Gerthans plate (however you spell it) and juggling other defensive items among the group, that -9 ac gets him batted around like a rag doll. When I get the gloves on him, "I notice you are getting hit a lot less Annie..."
There’s a mod out there that turns Anomen into a Paladin when he earns his knighthood, but I feel like that’s a risky choice. I think he works well as a Fighter-Cleric, better than a Paladin. Those divine spells and with the plate and gloves you mentioned, he is a beast in combat!
@@CelestineMarvelous Right, just within that round, an enemy could go invisible again, so Inquisitors would need to be careful about that when using True Sight
The inquisitor is top 3 most powerful classes imo, being able to dispel EVERYTHING in the game on SoA at level 15 is insane Also undead hunters are amazing in IWD
@Redjoy123 No one will believe me... after 1 min I got 96... Have never ever had a roll over 94. I went Undead Hunter because RP-reason. Will be playing on my Switch so I can take it with me on the road :-)
@ I absolutely believe you, especially with the Paladin! Paladins are going to have inflated stats already, so rolling a 96 absolutely happens every once in a while.
I find undead hunter to be interesting in the sense that context dependent bonuses are kind of tricky to balance. In my mind, buffy the vampire slayer would make a great undead hunter, as long as shes only fighting undead. That plus three stacks with harrower, and makes an appreciable difference in the early game, but I feel like undead hunter could really fill its niche if they got an enhanced version of turn undead.
Buffy is the exact reason why alignment is both more and less limiting than folks think. Buffy is, undeniably, either an Undead Hunter or a Cavalier (big bonuses against demons and resistance against fear). However, being Lawful Good is interesting for her. This can be tough because Buffy breaks rules all time time (particularly in the early seasons) to the point of getting kicked out of her home and expelled from school. BUT she also represents following a code of conduct of training, research, patrolling, and fighting evil monsters. She refuses to kill people (something that causes Faith to “fall”) and she protects those people who really aren’t worth saving. She actually works really well as a Lawful Good Paladin (either as a Cavalier or Undead Hunter), not just in her fighting style but as a character.
But more importantly, where did you get that Portrait? When I play a cavalier again, I want her to be her! Better than any portrait I downloaded so far!
I did get used to nobody ever clicking likes on my channel, even when I gladly did so for people I sympathize with. Yet, low health & age make me falter on this outdated ideal, as I dislike being on that side of vindictive, uncaring, passive-aggressive results. My most recent: A Githyanki Paladin of Chauntea in Neverwinter Online, battlefield brute, not saintly healer nor undead-bane.
@@Redjoy123 Tricky, needs mental resistance due to the Mindflayers, and Gith came in to offer an alternate to the `religious touch´ D&D already had. Plus: The Githyanki Githzerai conflicts remained `insider knowledge´ to plenty of players. Still, paladins are a formidable class. Believe it, or not, a buddy of mine even ran original NWN with an elven paladin! 😉

Recently had a "solo play-through" with Blackguard kit, damn she was unstoppable 😌

See, now you tell me! If I had known that before going into my IWD run, I might have done quite a bit better!
Nooow I should really take my Paladin Knight forward and beyond BG1.
Really great guide (and video) Redjoy 👌
Thank you! Paladins are great! Just be patient with your rolls for ability scores.

Yup! I’ll be going in the casters next week!

Truth! So useful.
@Redjoy123 Dwarf blackguard, elf inquisitor.... fun stuff, still can't get the dual any class mod to work.... Druid is made op, crazy op.

I feel like every Githyanki warrior who works within their empire should be considered a Paladin.
