Stilicho the Berserkamage Ep. 1 - Baldur's Gate EE SCS Insane Hardcore Run
This is our weekly series for Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition, playing with Insane Difficulty, using SCS, and playing it hardcore (meaning no save, no reload, no second chances). For our adventure, we will be traveling with Stilicho, who will start as a Berserker then dual-class to a Mage in Baldur's Gate 2.
The real life Stilicho was a general for the Western Roman Empire in the later part of the fourth century AD, born from both Roman and Vandal origins. He was ambitious and political but served to try to maintain civilization over a crumbling empire. Today, Stilicho was known for bringing both personal ambition and a drive to save civilization of the Sword Coast.

Baldur's Gate My Favorite Arcane Spells - Level 4
The damage you're doing is a result of auto criting sleeping foes I think.
Did you know that with 19+ strength, you can two hand a gnomish or halfling party member and whilst equipped as a weapon, they do not count towards your party limit? At 21+, you can dual wield party members in this manner. Every attack performed with a party member equipped in this manner allows them to perform a full round worth of actions.
Nothing is deadlier than a flying, screaming, armed and bloodthirsty gnome or halfling, flying right at the enemy.
How clean are elven arses?
Hey man , u can do whatever pleases u. 😂 But i would recommend watching "the northman" movie. Especially the raiding scene. The berserker there are a good guess considering how few we know about that time. But there would not been a reaaon to literally ban going berserk by the catholic church if there had not been a reason doing so. If u were half u should use spears or axes. Swords were pretty uncommon. As a teacher u know the importance of names. And as its called berserker i will tell u dualing to a mage is the stupidest thing ever. "Berserk" should prohibit spellcasting. I dont do the power lvling anymore. It bores me. The early bg1 maps are more fun if u dont plow through everything because your entire party starts at 32k xp. Good luck and have fun
Thank you! Absolutely right in Berserker and actually berserking in battle. Logically, you are correct that they shouldn’t be allowed to cast spells while enraged (I feel like Rome Total War nailed this with their berserker units). I like the idea of the exact same thing but naming it differently. For example, in Dragon Ball Z, there were techniques that would have very short term boosts to combat abilities then ended with exhaustion afterwards. That would make more sense than really being Enraged or Berserking.
@Redjoy123 in original AD&D Kits May habe been prohibited from dual classing. I dont think they cared enough for bg1 I personally prefer "being strong" to any "boosts" whatsoever. But i accept that These things work for cinematric purposes:)
I always wondered if Hull's sword is breakable. I never tried to keep it because I usually acquired a +1 rather quickly. And the great +2 after that, so I figured I didn't want to get Hull in trouble:)
@@fredblues7175 Alas, I tested this a while back, it is breakable.
@@Redjoy123 I think keeping the default quarterstaff around for emergencies is a brilliant interpretation of game mechanics. With the benefit of hindsight, I would make both wooden and metallic weapons breakable from the start. Hopefully, it would encourage players to loot and scavenge instead of just gluing a particular weapon type to their hands. Oh boy, another generic dagger dropped but I only use short swords. What's in this crate here? Oh boy, another generic club.
I really like your custom Paladin portrait in this vid. I didn't see it in any of the packs at the link in the description. Any chance you can link it here? Thank you!
I hate to say it, but I think this was just a Google or Pinterest search. I’m pretty sure if you search for “Human Paladin portrait”, you’ll probably see it in the results. Alas, I don’t really remember where specifically it was. I’m sorry for that.
Poor Magda 😭😭 Was a real powerful party
Oh yes, absolutely heartbreaking but also had user error!
Feedback regarding mellencamp: should there be more quests that reward you for taking a 50/50? If you get 2000xp, theres a good possibility you gain a level from it. If you fail, you lost maybe two minutes of your life. That sounds like a pretty good trade. Is there such a thing as too much rng? Would bg be a better game if more classes/ races had "wild magic" tables? Perhaps: every time a berserker makes an attack while wielding a weapon with which he is proficienct, he rolls a d20. If he gets a 20, he gets three rounds of berserking for free. But if he rolls a 1, something bad happens.
@@AndrewRussell-dz8zy Agreed 👍
Personally, I don't like rng with permanent results. Ironman changes things I suppose, but as a practical matter, the average player will just reload. If it cannot be undone with a rest, rng dependent outcomes suck. Stuff like failing a quest or permanently losing a lot of health due purely to dice rolls isn't fun.
01:12:48 perhaps an insomnia run might be interesting to theory craft. Probably not on scs, but just for the sake of mental exercise, see how far your party can get without clicking the rest button.
Do you mean “Redjoy keeps going on and on past the point of normal sleep to see how long he lasts on SCS”? I mean, I don’t need exhaustion to make dumb choices. OR do you mean play with a party with no resting? That would actually be kinda funny.
@Redjoy123 why not both?
Singular pilum, multiple pila. When the Romans took Latia they decided to adopt some of their language conventions, such as whether a word's ending indicated quantity. So, in Japanese, one could be talking about one katana or twenty katana. In latin, you could have one pilum or multiple pila, but if you had three pilums, you were a bad boy.
@@AndrewRussell-dz8zy Stilicho sometimes breaks the rules and throws multiple pila, hence: True Neutral
Scouting with divination spells, or with Hexxat who doesn't die from massive damage (full vampire) is a way to know what dungeons offer without metagaming. If you are looking for a deep immersion run that is survivable on higher difficulties.
good luck on the run! really enjoyed the Magda play through can't wait to watch this one.
Berserker Enrage is so stupid powerful. Just taking the minimum amount of levels in order to be able to dual class is worth it, since you'll be able to level up faster as ur second class, as opposed to going to 9 or 13 first to get more martial prowess. Since you know the game, you know where and when to use your single enrage
apr is pretty tough to match, idk if I would ever dual before 9, and I do typically go to 13 on zerker. the enrage isn't really needed more than once, but the apr and hp are beyond valuable in scs insane hardcore runs imo
If you are optimising for BG2 and beyond, you are significantly better off dualling at level 9. If you have the patience, 13 is a bit better, but far less convenient.
I do a runthrough of bg1/2 a couple times a year. I’m doing my first shadowdancer run as 13 shadowdancer dualed to mage, and it’s such a blast. HiPS, shadowstep, 4x backstabs buffed with spells like nondetection, imp invis, mislead, using Black Blade of Disaster, it’s such a fun time
Yeah, I think I poo-pooed this combo but I feel like Non-Detection and Mislead are really good in conjunction with Hide in Plain Sight. Shadowdancer to Mage looks great! Good to see that you rocked it and now, maybe, I should shut my filthy loudmouth! LOL!
Never could handle rangers, as I was too #LOTR imprinted AND the official focus on that BS Arcane Archer was simply too one-dimensional. Shaman-Rogue mix or Druid-Rogue mix would still be my choice to mix a less urban survivalist. Plus: Redjoy rulez!
Thank you so much! You are awesome Fridge!
I think archers should be more "civilized" than the other Ranger classes, just because they are amazing with bows doesn't mean that they need be ONLY wilderness experts, an archer is an asset to any army.
I think, that is so fighter archers & rogue archers are more clearly a separate topic to handle (by DEVS and their lackeys).
Monks gain no additional hitpoints from constitution beyond 16.
I think axes are ok for Beastmaster. The one thing I enjoy about Artisan's adjustment to it, your Beastmaster can where Ankheg plate. I think it was a fix, not a glitch, because they never changed it. If someone prefers to melee their Rangers, this can be a game changer. Of course, in 2 it doesn't matter as much because the Beastmaster will have better by the time he gets Ankheg. Enjoyed this video a lot because I have not played Rangers near as much as fighters, barbarians and paladins in the last 20+ years!
Barbarians and Paladins are great choices! Rangers are just... challenging (except for Stalkers and Archers, they are great!)
I would take quarter staff on Archers as my melee weapon. The extra reach allows you to fight from behind your tanks (usually requires micro, but it does make them less likely to attack you). Also, you definitely want crushing damage on your melee weapon. If you cannot do crushing damage somehow (and no bow or crossbow can), your archer will be useless in some fights. And pre-enhanced edition, its very inconvenient to switch from bow to dual wielding.
That's not bad, the reach is a good point but number of attacks is good too, so I would say for blunt damage that two flails or maces might be a good option too?
To be honest, the base ranger is pretty naff. Any warrior with decent stats is effective, but in terms of class features, ranger is the worst warrior (well, not if you count monk as a warrior). Stalker is decent, Archer is excellent (and the strongest class in the BG1 portion of the game).
Isn't Lindin the name of one of the bandits you encounter in BG1?
That sounds right... <looks it up> Yup! he's one of the Waterdavians who hangs out at Mutamin's Garden... thus he must perish.
Correct me if I am wrong, but as an Archer kit I always chose the longbow proficiency so i could use the composite longbow for the strength damage bonus on top of the other Ranger bonuses and kit bonuses to damage (especially if I rolled an exceptional strength of 18/85 or better), and there are at least 5 magical composite longbows in the game (not including +1 to +3 variety). I know the damage dealt is per the ammunition but on an uncompleted play-through of BG1 I was taking down most humanoid mobs with one shot around character level 6. This was on the Enhanced Edition of the game.
Composite bows do not add strength to damage in 2nd edition. They give a static +2 damage. In terms of base stats, with the extra attack per round, it is the best ranged weapon, except maybe slings or throwing weapons with an extremely high strength character. The problem is itemisation. They are fine in BG1 (gets +2 hit and +3 damage as early as a Beregost), but whilst archery in general is gutted in BG2, composite bows get absolutely shafter. Longbows never get +4 ammo and dont even get +3 ammo in Shadow of Amn. That means you simply cannot hit a significant number of enemies. Also, the damage bonuses of the bows suck. Shortbows get an unlimited +3 ammo (albeit very low damage) Bow in trademeet and the most damaging bow in the game with Gesen (averages +4.5 damage and counts as +4 weapon). You get a +1 hit damage and APR shortbow very early on also, which is stronger than any early game longbow. Crossbow is the best bet if you are fine with going to Watchers Keep at the start of SoA just to grab firetooth from the merchant.
There is a misunderstanding here. The only "good" ranger point originated in D&D.The D&D ranger was Aragorn. Damn.im old. They removed that in 3rd Edition. There were no kits in D&D. So view the kits with this in mind. Its just laziness by the programmers. The HiS is not only to scout ahead. It was designed so that ranger can acompany your rogues. Beastmasters use slings or bows(if they can). U dont do melee with a beastmaster. Sadly dragons are not really dangerous...even with 700 hps firkraag is not a real challenge. Just tank them and dispel them. Even four in a row (ascension) is not that hard. They just have not enough actions per round to hold up against an entire party
True about Dragons (though they're tough for a bum like me!) though I would say that Dragons are more dangerous than Ogres, Elementals, Golems, or Skeletons. You have a good point though, once you dispel them with the right spells, Dragons can be fought. I would say Demonic/Fell isn't a bad choice though, lots of Magic Resistance, Spells, and Immunities. That's good advice for Beastmasters, Slings aren't terrible but just about any other non-metal choices are pretty bad. If my edition knowledge is correct, kits were developed as part of BG2. Editions afterwards used 3.5, which kinda had kits but they were more associated with the different feats and skills taken (such as Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2). I still think that there are plenty of Archers in history who were mercenaries, such as the Italian Crossbowmen or the Free Company Longbowmen, who could be good or evil. I get why they connected D&D Rangers with Aragorn but I'm not fully convinced that they should always be goodie-two-shoes.
@Redjoy123 Oh sry u are right. I totally forgot that kits were already in vanilla BG2. Still, i think i was just laziness because kits are a subgroup of the class and if not all rangers have to be good they would have to split this subgroup up. Reorganize char creation sheet for example. Beginning with the D&D third edition rangers no longer need to be good. So they caught up with that. Evil rangers can choose their own race as favored enemy
@@grimdawn9843 Oh man, that would be great, or just the ability to choose Humans as a favored enemy? Absolutely devastating!
hope to see more of this video soon
Absolutely! Each Monday we'll have a new class guide!
If you plan on using hide, use the AI script so the ranger always attempts to hide when idle. You'll attack from stealth and have increased thac0 on that first strike or shot, which you could combine with a poison arrow/bolt or dagger.
That's actually really smart, I would strongly recommend taking a high Charisma character to be the face of the party with you (since you won't be chatting with folks if you aren't visible) but this would be great!
So I've noticed that when I leave candlekeep, there are a few bears I can charm. So my question is if I charm a bear and we get into a fight with a wolf and my bear gets the killing blow will my party get the xp?
Yep, you'll get the XP!
All rangers should come with a miniature giant space hamster that takes up a quick item slot and get a spell called "go for the eyes, boo" which inflicts blindness and 1d4 damage to the target
I mean... yes! Why isn't this a thing?
Replay Neverwinter Online, get the Throne of Boo, Minsc as companion, and whatever else that ugly rodent propagated about itself! 🤣 `Even a newbie can hear Minsc shout thru Protector's Enclave, when a character arrives after the tutorial (edge of level 1 to 2)! ´
I’ve always thought that rangers getting the Two-Weapon Fighting bonus was mainly for Drizzt’s sake.
I would say that this is probably true, but I'd say that just having the two-weapon fighting bonus just for one character seems... silly? You're probably correct though.
I'm enjoying these new guides. Looking forward to Paladin.
me2. I'm a Cavalier in bgee now and try to roleplay as best as I can. It's really fun
@tammo100 I'm going through as an Undead Hunter atm.
Guess what's next week?
Paladin has some spoiler-attitude, but the class is effing impressive!
I installed tweeks. Dual classing a ranger... Stalker\mage.
At what level did you dual?
@Antilluminati Lol I haven't yet but the plan was at 17. I also installed no xp cap.
I'm messing around with all the potential builds on black pits. Trying to do a barb\druid as well. Might not go as desired.
Nice! I feel like this does make sense, even though there's a bit of overlap with the arcane spells. That'd be a very interesting combo, you'll have to let me know how it turns out.
I play with almost the same mods and difficulty settings as you, not hardcore though. Much like accidents in real life, a combination of things went wrong here and spelled your demise ultimately : - You seem a bit underleveled for this quest on SCS Insane. I like to do it after I've completed all other major side quests before sailing for Spellhold (De'Arnise keep, Trademeet, Umar Hills etc...) - You had Group AI toggled off, you can only micromanage so much, you miss a ton of damage when your fighters are not always attacking something. - You don't prebuff enough if at all, some spells last long enough and help a lot especially in a difficult dungeon like this. Mainly : Protection from evil 10' radius and Chaotic Commands. And on some SCS Insane encounters you really have to make use of the others short durations divine and arcane spells to turn the tides in your favor. Divine to buff your guys up (prayer, recitation, draw upon holy might, defensive harmony) and arcane to debuff/control enemies (slow and chaos are very good, you can also attempt to mass blind with glitterdust) - As someone else pointed out, you need meta knowledge for SCS Insane hardcore runs or you will simply just die on encounters you are not prepared for, that's just how the game plays out on these settings. Hope I didn't sound too pedantic, good luck and have fun on your next run :)
You're absolutely right on the Group AI, I think that was from the golem fight, and I was pretty under leveled. However, gonna give you a bit of pushback when you say I didn't prebuff at all. My party has Prayer and Recitation on there, which was not quite enough (agreed there) but I'm not sure what more Protection from Evil 10' Radius or Chaotic Commands would have done extra there. They didn't charm or confuse at the end and an additional buff to AC or saves wouldn't have really done much. Should I have prebuffed more? Yes. Did I "not prebuff at all"? No. There was a good point made in another comment that (a) I should have done one room then gone back to do other things before tackling this one and (b) having more specific protections against the Undead would have been better.
@@Redjoy123 I just think protection from evil is too good to pass in general, I have it up all the time but maybe that's just me :) Especially when combined with other spells, those AC and saves add up.
You might've had a chance to turn them with Anomen. Not sure, think elder vamps are considered 10th lvl. Maybe you could've used that protection scroll on Minsc and if he had the undead killing axe he might've handled them all by himself.
Yeah, I’m looking at it, if I had Protection from the Undead, I’d be able to waltz through that and other big spots for the first part of BG2. Both that room and with the Graveyard and the Shadow Temple quest. I’d just have to figure out how and when to use that protection. Minsc with Azuredge would have been good.
Awesome series of vids! Eventhough Baldur's Gate isn't new to me, I sort of enjoy these class guides. Eventhough I'm currently playing a Cavalier from BG1 to BG2, I'm always thinking of my next possible choice of class.
Great vid! I really enjoy how these "older" games have uneven classes/races/leveling progression. I think some classes lend themselves better for min/max power gamers, and some classes, like the Ranger, feel more at home in a roleplaying mindset, where it isn't only about being the absolute strongest. Always had a soft spot for the Stalker.
@@GODSPEEDseven Thank you so much! (What good timing! We JUST restarted an updated version of this series that actually puts the kits in the class guides, as of January of 2025, every Monday… and guess who is second?)
I am throwing my bid in for a Barbarian! Magda was a blast, you did a great job!
Thank you! I will miss Magda. I can put Barbarian on the list for this year, I plan on doing another redemption run for my next hardcore run.
Oh no....
I am of the opinion that scs difficulty is designed to encourage "metroidvania" style backtracking: do the first room of a dungeon, grab a sweet item, get some easy xp, skedaddle and head to a new dungeon. Its slow and a lot of work but thats kind of the point of scs difficulty.
That actually makes a lot of sense... I guess I tried that with the Druid's Outcove that ended up leading me to handle things in the city that led us to face - ANOMEN ROMANCE SPEECH Damnit Anomen!
Not really. I play only on insane and what is really needed is meta-knowledge. Adamantite golems are immune to all dmg and take only one point of dmg per hit. +3 weapons needed. As with the rakshasa the right tool does the trick. For the golems it is anomen, divine prot, flail of the ages. Minsk second row ..oil of speed , lilarcor. Or korgan with potion of absorbtion ,haste ,stonefire and the +3 iceaxe. Or simple dwarven thrower. Or minsk with azure edge. I strongly encourage mivsans completionist playthrough on YT. He is THE bg tactician. Daev is the player but miv is the knowledge guy Firkraags dungeon is the highest lvl challenge before spellhold. You need to have the right tools to handle its challenges. And theres not really much to find there for ur party. Xp and gold. Maybe the dragon helmet and shield Carsomyr is useless for u U are a good player but u seriouly lack knowledge. U need to KNOW what monsters u face.Cheasing the vamps with buffed anomen with a prot undead scroll would have been ur solution. He goes at it alone. The other five wait behind close doors.
@ Okay, thx bro
@@Redjoy123 hi. Im sry if i sound condescending...thats part of my autistic disfunction. You are a good player but with no save/no reload u will fail if u only react to your enemies. A high lvl wizard with dragons breath or horrid wilthing will instantly kill unprotected companions. U need to know ahead what u are facing and where. And what spells will protect u and what spells ur enemies protect themselves with. Daevaorn did hundreds of runs and he does not accend the majority of times. I cannot do Hardcore runs because i lose focus to often but i can memorize every single fight in every single map. This is how i can still have a good time in this game. With no rest runs and consumables only challenges and things like that. I wish u sucess and u will suceed but u need to change how u approach your game.
@@grimdawn9843 Appreciate it, and you're not wrong. To be honest, the more I think about it and rewatch that fight, the more ticked off I get at it. You guys have really great suggestions and I do have A LOT to learn about how to handle those SCS situations. There are strategies that I just don't use that I need to use. Thank you, sorry for being a bit short with my response. You are awesome and I'll seriously look at these suggestions before really going deep into BG2!
Dunno if you know, but you can rightclick those party formations for more options. I recommend using a narrower formation.
Oh yes, I knew... I just had a case of the moron-pox and Magda suffered the consequences... 🤦♂
I've been having a lot of fun wielding Pixie Prick on my tank, Celestial Fury on another character and The Sleeper flail.. replaced by Flail of the Ages and Ardulia's Fall in the offhand. Still equipping The Sleeper when fighting humanoids tho. Ardulia's Fall is so underrated, by the way. The slow procs more often than Flail of Ages' 33% chance. Just sucks how the Flail is so much easier to get compared to the Mace. Ideally I'd have someone else wield Ardulia's Fall, but three frontliners is already crowded. The amount of stuns, sleeps and slows this build yields is ridiculous and it seems perfect for hardcore playthroughs.
I like bard as he can take burdens off other party members, allowing them to hit their full potential.
Clear... great content
That's great! I'm happy you enjoyed it and I hope that this is a help!
Hi guys.. first time playing this classic
Hi...i have ironskins he said. Like colussus he said and u only have a stick. Man she shuffed that stick deep😂 double damage and she would have popped aerie and minsk The catthing is a rakshasa. They are immune to all spells up to lvl6 or so. The radschas even up to lvl7. Straight up immune. Surprised that hold monster worked. There also immune to normal weapons and magical weapons +1. Some up to +2. Only way to beat these guys clean is dispelling them. Often twice. Surprised that u do not have some breach scrolls at least. Fun fact Ruhk is an title from india which is a knight equivalent. And because all rakshasa in bg are fig/wiz this one is a transmuter. Do u really want to enter? Are u able to beat the adamantite golems in there?
Yeah, Rakshasa are no joke! One of the toughest opponents in BG2 that no one talks about! I got super lucky that I was able to get the Hold Monster in on it (which I'm not sure how that worked...). A major limitation on this party is that I didn't pack my Breach or dispelling spells... oops... hopefully I can survive? But can we talk about that style? Holy crow, Rakshasa, as evil as they are, are undeniably stylish! Basically a large human with a tiger's head and amazing style!
@Redjoy123 yeah...they have style. And they eat humans. XD. They originate from the oriental adventures setting i believe. But im not old enough to ever lay my hands on one of the original sourcebooks of al-quadim or the other one (dont remember the name atm) .and today they are called inappropiate... They are spirits of evil nature who prey on humans. Strongly lawful and organized in a kaste like system similar to what people believe india was in earlier times. They are still a few rakshasa ahead of you. If u survive windspear. XD So pack your breach scrolls :)
Do you think the hobgoblin wizard got bullied growing up cuz he was the runt of the litter and wasnt very good at hob-ball?
Maybe, until he cast his first little magic missile... and killed one of the other hobgoblins outright. Then they held him as an exemplar of the ages, always to guide the tribe, using the powers of the arcane to - is that an adventuring party? Is that Gorion's Ward?!
@@Redjoy123 yer a wizard, Hobby. Make your way down to platform sixty-nine and four twentieths and board the locomotive to hobsnorts academy of hobbin' and wizardin'. Hobby couldn't stop his hands from shaking. After countless times reading the letter over and over again, burning every detail into his memory, he clutched the parchment to his chest and felt the warmth of a single tear streaming it's way down his cheek. Life was tough in the windspear hills. For the members of the hobknob tribe, prospects were bleak, with only the biggest and strongest hobs managing to scrape a meager existence out of their harsh and unforgiving surroundings. But now, hobby had a chance. A ticket out of this tiny village and into something much grander. A wizard. Yer a wizard, hobby. And in his heart of hearts, he promised to himself, ye'll be the grandest of wizards. Giddy with pure excitement, he started thinking of all the spells he would cast: magic missile, invisibility, fireball, stoneskin, and perhaps one day, even the most powerful spell a wizard could cast, the fabled goodberry. "Hobby, it's time to go hunting. " a rough voice broke him out of his reverie. Hastily stuffing the letter into a pocket, he scrambled to the door and yelled out "comin' ". One last hunt, and after it was over he'd be on his way to hobgoblin wizardin' school. Chomping at the bit with eager anticipation, he rushed out the door behind his brothers and cousins. Not quite an hour later, they could discern the stench of manflesh. The pungent, turnipy aroma of gnome. Even a delicate, savory hint of half-elf. With a vigorous roar, the hobgoblins charged forward at their prey. But suddenly, their roars changed to screams of terror, for a fireball had been launched in their direction. Hobby looked down, and saw the charred ashes of his corpse smouldering in the bitter, howling gusts of the windspear hills. He was a ghost now. Letting out a long and dejected sigh, he made his way back to Hobblekeep, to do it all over again. He knew the rules. Double damage, no reload. C'est le vie.
